John Ramsay High School’s buildingproject is about to afffect major and last-ing changes in the level of environmen-
tal awareness among learners as well as thecommunity.Last week Phase 1 of the R3 million build-
ing project at the school in Bishop Lavis wasinaugurated and attended by dignitariesthat included the MEC for Education, Pro-vincial Minister Donald Grant and UWCRector Professor Brian O’Connel, amongothers.Grant congratulated the principal, the
teachers and the school governing body fortheir enthusiasm and dedication to bettertheir circumstances.
The infrastructure was revamped by theVMA project team and led by CEO AngeloManson, who pointed out that the right envi-ronment was important for learners. “Ourchildren must be educated in an environ-ment that is conducive to learning.
Security upgrade“The project included the upgrade of the
learners’ ablution area, electrical improve-ments, the principal’s office as well as stafffacilities.“It also included the much-needed up-
grade to the security of the premises whichwill enable the incorporation of futuresports and recreation facilities.”Through the Partner for Possibility pro-
gramme by the principal Quentin Newman,
and IT portfolio head Sanlam Personal Fi-nance RenèWright, the history of the schoolis now clearly depicted in the entrance hallthrough the newlymountedHonours boardsas well as photographs of the previous prin-cipals, staff members as well as current per-sonnel.Newmanpointed out that itwas important
that the learners know the rich legacy of theschool in the community.“The current generation does not realise
that this school played a big part in securingtheir freedom in the fight against apart-heid,” he said.“Some great leaders of the student strug-
gle came from here, and many learners rosefrom their disadvantaged communities toget to the top of their professions from this
school, and those stories must inspire a newgeneration.”
Creative spiritPast and present learners expressed their
joy and satisfaction with the developmentsand all other attendees were surprised bythe advancements and creative spirit of allinvolved.Messages from previous learners also in-
cluded messages of goodwill from FrancoisGroepe, deputy director of the Reserve Bankof SA; and SA Ambassador to Damascus,ShaunByneveldt.Another stalwart support-er of the initiatives at the school is ProfessorBrianO’Connell, whoapplauded thenew de-velopments.

Mandela Day played its part in treating agroup of children like royalty last week.Royal Kidz-Living the Dream is an organi-
sation started by Danolene Johanessen, andtheywere in action at theAdriaanseLibrarylast week. She explained that the organisation as-
sists childrenwho are extremely vulnerablein society byproviding themwith the properschool attire and stationery resources forschool.“From the information we have collated,
the facts indicate that children who grow upin financially challenging environmentswhere guardians cannot even afford a pairof school shoes, are susceptible to droppingout of school,” she said.“These same children normally bear the
brunt of bullying and ridicule from moreprivileged students.”She added that their organisation has em-
barked on a project in collaborationwith theAdriaanse and Elsies River Libraries to in-volve the women of this community and theold age home to knit scarves for the childrenof Elsies River.“Since the start of June this year, 300
scarves have been knitted.“Our aim was to finish the project of knit-
ting the scarves prior to Mandela Day to bein a position to hand over the scarves to thechildren on 18 July.“The ladies were extremely excited to
meet this challenge and therewas great com-petition between the elderly ladies to knit asmany scarves as humanly possible for thisproject.“There was no shortage of enthusiasm
amongst the volunteers, but, there was ashortage of wool which hampered the quan-
tity of scarves which were finally complet-ed,” she said. The completed scarves were handed over
to representatives of Clarke, Range, Uitsigand Elnor Primary Schools at theAdriaanseLibrary last week.“We’re still going on with our project,”
added Johanneson.“But, we still need more wool and volun-
teers to keep knitting.”The childrenwere delighted to receive the
scarves and thanked the seniors.V Further information about the project from Danolene on 083 854 2705.

Ouma is back!Therewas ahappy ending to the alarming
case of the kidnapped Ouma from a gardenin Elsies River as reported in the Tyger-Burger of 17 July. Last week we reportedthat three scoundrels had run off with theold lady leaving her husband alone and dis-traught in the garden of Derick and EsmeArendse. “Thanks to TygerBurger, therewas such a lot of interest and a good Samari-tan paid her “ransom”, returning her to uson Wednesday,” said Derick.“I did not want to ask too many questions
because we are just happy to have her back
with her Oupa, and gave him a reward forgetting her back with us.”Derick’s wife, Esme, was also overjoyed
to have them back, and they are part of hercollection of ornamental figurines in theirgarden. “They’re really my pride and joy. They have always been a talking point inthe area, and they brighten up the lives ofso many children and people who pass by.“During the time that she was missing
everybody asked about her. This morningwhen she was back next to Oupa, peoplestopped to say that they were glad that shewas back.”

“A principal with a vision and dedicatedteaching staff with a passion to strive for abetter future in an extremely difficult envi-ronment means John Ramsay High Schoolwill only thrive,” O’Connell said.A grave necessity at present is the crea-
tion of the sporting facilities to enable learn-ers to develop this untapped talent. This phase will include repainting of all
classrooms as well as replacing all door-frames and doors.Apart fromsports fields, the current needs
at the school include a multi-functional hall
that can double as an indoor sports facility,a server for the computer class, a school li-brary as well as data projectors. Its evident that the vision for this school
and the community is one where both aredestined for greater heights.“The most important factor in these new
developments is the learner at the school.”“Theymust realise that these changes are
for them, to motivate them to achieve theirpotential, to stay on course and make thatpositive difference in their communities,”concluded Newman.

If music be the food of love ... sing on!Last Wednesday local and international
choirs lifted the roof of the Church of theResurrectionAnglicanChurch inBonteheu-wel when the Ihlombe South African ChoralFestival hosted one of its series of concertsthere. While the theXhosaword, ihlombe, has no
equivalent in English, the meaning of thewordwas evident as two local, and two inter-national choirs joined forces for an eveningof magical harmony of voices that took thevenue’s spellbound audience to anothertranscendental level. That is the essence of the word, it is used
to describe that feeling when music takesyou to another level. It transports people to a state of over-
whelming joy in which they become soacutely moved that they are compelled tostand up and participate. The tradition of choral music brought the
audience to life onWednesday, from the firstsacred songs of the “resident” choir from thechurch under the direction of Roger Horne,to the joyous Spirituals of the NorthwesternHigh School choir, and a finale that featuredall the participating choirs.I’ve alwayshad abit of a passion for choral
music and this performance grabbed methroughout, and its a tradition that must be
promoted and encouraged in our communi-ties.The Fezeka Alumni Youth Choir stepped
on stage and the power of their voicesprompted standing ovations after almostevery song that they sang.A surprise for the audience at this per-
formance was a guest appearance by ourSA’s Got Talent winner, James Bhemgee, who made some new musical friends as heimpressed the visitors. At this concert the visitors were the amaz-
ing young girls from Trinidad and Tobagowith their Steel Drum ensemble. They proved that while they could handle
the serious side of choral singing, they couldalso take their Calypso traditions and twistit into choral musical magic. They even showed that they could take a
John Legend tune, “Are You Out There”,and turn it into a beautiful ballad with theirharmony of voices. The Northwestern High School Choir also
impressed the audience with their reper-toire that concentrated on work from theAmerican songbook. Some of their songs got everybody up and
dancing – who said choral singing is sad andslow?Hats off to the organisers of this festival,
it’s about more than just the music, it’s thefriendships that are formed through thismusic.
Choral music you just have to groove to

to stand up and make a difference, thenext generation will suffer because of ourlack of integrity.”
“There will be no moral values andrestoration amongst families, friends andneighbours, gang wars will be the orderof the day, so we trust God to use us tomake a difference in Bonteheuwel.”

The letter by Marthie Wilson“There but for the grace ofGod go I”, TygerBurger, 17July, refers. Vagrants do nothave to live on the streets, they choose to. Why don’t theymake use of the many institu-tions like night shelters andchurches that offer help?Because they do not like beingtold what to do. Could it bethat they lack self-control andself-respect? Most times alcoholis to blame.Children of alcoholics are
born with the gene. Let’s getrid of the manufacturers andsellers of alcohol which causesso much suffering, includingbroken homes (mine was one). The aftermath includes
emotionally abused children(they witness the arguments, violence, etc.) and grow uplacking self-esteem and so thecycle continues.God gave us free will so
they have no one else to blamebut themselves. He gave usgifts to share with otherpeople, what do they give? They are sick yes, but willthey accept or seek help? No.They have no regard for youor anybody else. Begging iseasier than doing a day’s work. They don’t even pick up theirown mess and put it in thebin. I say put them in akibbutz and make them workfor their living by tilling thesoil, growing vegetables andselling them to make somemoney to feed themselves andnot wait for others to take careof them.Sick of the mess.

Emergency Medical Servicescrews are being attacked bycriminals. “Why?”We are often told shocking
Horrible trauma ourEMS crews endure
stories by the crews we serverefreshments to on a Fridaynight, of what they have toendure on a daily basis whileon duty. People seem to haveabsolutely no respect for theEMS, who are actually there tohelp you, the man in the street.Staff are told that if they feel
unsafe, they may leave an area. However, if they attempt to dothis they are attacked ormoaned about as they thendon’t assist the patient. So,actually, they cannot win.A recent Facebook post from
a Metro EMS medic says; “Inthe last incident, night crewwas left so badly traumatised, because they were robbed atgunpoint of their personalpossessions. We go out to serveour community and we wouldlike the respect of our commu-nity. We don’t even know if wewill return safely to our lovedones.”One day, the EMS staff will
refuse to go into your area andwho will end up suffering? This is why we do what we
do – we go out on a Fridayevening to government hospi-tals and serve free refreshmentsto all emergency services onduty. Just to give the guys andgals a break from all theinsanity they have to deal with.

I was recently the victim of aburglary after being safe for 26years. I live a street away fromthe police station and wasappalled and disgusted at theway things work in our justicesystem. We were burgled and called
the police Z as would be thefirst thing to do in a situationlike this. We had to call twiceand waited for the police for along time before they came. Weare not ignorant to the fact thatthey have to attend to manyreports and service manypeople but what is “yanking mychain” is the fact that they canstill admit that the area is a bigtarget at the moment and alsoadd that there is at least oneburglary per day in our area. Ifthis very specific statistic canbe conveyed with such confi-dence, my question would bewhat is being done to ensurethat it actually becomes a paststatistic and why is it wornwith such pride in the present?I found that a neighbour’s car
was stolen not too long ago. They gained access to my housevia a neighbour’s wall, whoalso suffered loss of items. When asking if we couldapprehend or protect ourselvesif we caught the perpetrators inour property, we were told notto do that but to contact thepolice. The burning question on my
lips at this stage, is this… If wehave to wait that long for thepolice to arrive, would weactually not be in more danger,as a criminal becomes like ananimal when trapped and allkinds of things unfold?Processing a claim is one
thing but some items can neverbe replaced and the thought ofone’s privacy being invadedand violated is sickening. This is not even a catch 22
but a catch of a different kind, still waiting to be listed.

LEWENSKIEKIE
behandel, vertel jy dit oor asof ditvoorbladnuus is.

Ajax face tough start to seasonTHOMAS CAROLUS
Ajax Cape Town face a tough start tothe new season as they are set to playGolden Arrows, away, followed by
Orlando Pirates in their first home gameof the new season.
The game is scheduled for August 3(Golden Arrows) and the Orlando Piratesgame is scheduled for Tuesday 20 Augustwith kick-off at 19:30.
The Urban Warriors are then set to playAmaZulu at home at the Cape Town Stadi-um on Sunday 1 September at 15:00, Bid-vestWits away on September 13 at 20:00 fol-lowed by another humdinger againstMamelodi Sundowns at theCapeTownSta-dium onWednesday 25 September at 19:30.
The season’s opening fixtures will alter-
nate with the MTN8 Cup competition thatstarts on theweekendofAugust 10/11,withthe final scheduled for Saturday 21 Sep-tember.
TheTelkomKnock-Out starts on the firstweekend of October, giving the PSL fix-tures a break until October 23 when AjaxCape Town play Free State Stars at theCape Town Stadium at 19:30.
First DivisionWith regards to the promoted National
First Division teams, the PSL stated thatthe arbitration which will decide whichclubs will be the National First Divisionwinners and play-offs winners has not yetbeen completed, meaning that the namesof those clubs are not yet reflected in thefixtures.
In this competition stalwart David Noto-ane is the man upon whom Santos are pin-ning their hopes of earning promotionback to the Absa Premier League.
The club have announced Notoane ashead coach for the 2013/2014 season.
Notoane first made his name as a lethalmarksman at the People’s Team, regularlyturning out for nearly a decade in their col-ours.
He began his coaching career in Santos’development ranks, making his way up tothe senior side.
He has also enjoyed spells as assistant atGolden Arrows, and National under-23team.
Last season Notoane was assistant tohead coach Ian Palmer, who departed theclubhavingnarrowly failed to earn promo-
tion from theNational First Division to theAbsa Premier league.
Work hardNotoane is under no illusion as to the na-
ture of the expectations that await him asSantos look to bounce back to the top flightafter having being relegated two seasonsback.
“The most important thing for the sea-son ahead is that we work hard, and wework smart to achieve our objective ofwin-ning the league and thereby winning pro-motion to the PSL,” he said.
“What I will emphasise to the players isthat from here on, the foundation has beenlaid in terms of the work we put in last sea-son and we are going to work even harderto build on to that this season.’’

NEW UWC RUGBY DIRECTOR: WANTS TO PLAY BIG LEAGUE
De Villiers confident
UWC Rugby Director Peter De Villiers addresses his team during a warmup game against theBaby Boks earlier this year.
Peter de Villiers, Director of Rugby atthe University of the Western Cape(UWC), remains confident that UWC
has what it takes to play in the big leagues.UWC is playing in the toughest league in
Western Province club rugby, the WesternProvince Rugby Union (WPRU) SuperLeague B, and the team is firing on all cylin-ders to earn promotion to Super League A.“The players are responding well to the
structures we have put in place since theVarsity Shield competition and by makingfull use of them the squad would be well ontheir way to Super League A glory,” says DeVilliers.
ExpertiseUWC is in third place with 39 points, tied
with False Bay RFC (2nd place), behind logleaders Primrose RFC on 53 points.Hementioned that UWC head coach, Oliv-
er Jansen, attended a training camp forcoaches in Durban lastmonth. “We are look-ing forward to benefiting from the expertisethat he has gained while in Durban and wewant to see how the team will make use ofthis, when they face False Bay RFC on 24 Ju-ly away from home,” he said.
In June, De Villiers spent some time inKenya, helping the Kenyan National sidewith training and other areas of their game.Shortly after this the Kenyan national sidecame to train against UWC. “It is importantto build relationships with rugby teamsacross Africa and this also served as goodmotivation for our team for the remainderof the season,” De Villiers says.Phillip October, UWCRugby chairperson,
said the UWC success story actually startedin 2010, when theymade the decision to playamongst the best clubs in the province.“Every year since 2010, we have earned
promotion; so it is clear that the structureswe implemented are working and will con-tinue to work as we move towards our jour-ney to success,” he said.October believes the key to a successful
side is to have the proper systems – such ascoaching, administration and quality play-ers – in place.“Having a goodunder-20 squad that serves
as a feeder to the first to third teams is anoth-er important part ofmakingUWCrugby bul-let-proof. This ensures that there is a con-stant flow of good players coming throughthe ranks,” he said.

Bellville het Tygerberg-klub ore aangesitmet sy sege van 33-21, terwyl Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege met 41-29 te sterk was virBrackenfell. Goodwood het met 31-30 metVillager afgereken.
