’n Dramatiese inhegtenisneming vansenior bendelede in ’n stil straat vanBostonwas ’n groot ontnugtering vir

bure.

Sexy Boys-bende, Jerome “Donkie” Booy-sen, is verlede Dinsdag saammet drie andermense by die huis in Kronkelstraat, Boston,Bellville in hegtenis geneem.

my straat,” het ’n buurman kwaad gesê.

Geskok“Ons is baie geskok.

Iris House Children’s Hospice had a verysuccessful 2013, showing phenomenalgrowth in their registered families – in De-cember 2012 they had 28 registered fami-lies and inDecember 2013 they finished theyear with 93 registered families.“Wehavealso grownourarea of commu-

nity-based care to include the northernsuburbs, Mfuleni, Vredenburg, Cross-roads and Khayelitsha,” said Sue van derLinde, founder and chairperson of IrisHouse.Iris House is committed to enriching the

quality of life for special needs childrenand young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, also providingsupport for their families.“The exciting news for 2014 is that we

have acquired a property for our hospicebuilding and look forward tomoving in bymid 2014. The house is, however, in verybad repair andwewill need to do extensiverepairs before we can take occupation,”Sue elaborates.

Appeal for containerShe said in the past six to eight months

the public has been amazing, and IrisHouse has received some wonderful dona-tions of goods, equipment, furniture, toys, etc. all of which will be needed once theymove into their house on the grounds ofStikland.“However, we have literally run out of

space for the items atmy house andwe arestill some time off getting the actual keysto the house and moving in.“The storage we have here is by no

means ideal and we don’t want the dona-tions becoming damaged.Wehave been of-fered free space on the grounds of one ofour volunteer’s factories to place a ship-ping container for storage.“However we have checked prices and

even second-hand they are R19 000. So weare appealing for a donated container asR19 000 is far out of our budget. We wouldbemore than happy to pay to transport thecontainer to its temporary and final homeat the grounds of our ownhouse.Wewouldobviously also allow the donor to place anyadvertising they deem fit on the contain-er,” Sue said.V Call 021 559 0800, visit www.irishouse.org. With the new school year starting soon, thecity’s Social Development and Early Child-hood Development Directorate urges par-ents to check that the ECD Centre they en-rol their children in, is registered with theWestern Cape Government’s Departmentof Social Development. The primary objective of the city’s Early

Childhood Development (ECD) Depart-ment is to create awareness about statutoryECD registration compliance so that par-ents, Early Childhood Development practi-tioners, caregivers and communities arewell-informed.The city’s mayoral committee member

for social development and early childhood

development, Suzette Little, said parentsshould make sure that the facility theirchildren are enrolled at, is not just a day-care centre where their children eat, sleepand play. A wise man recently sent out aheart-filled message, that gotme thinking. In his message heconveyed a very powerfulthought; the science of momen-tum is brought about by thestate of mind you are in at anygiven time. That state will affect the

kind of decisions you willmake and whether or not you

May 2014 be yourvery best year ever

will follow through. As we move into the year

2014, my prayer for all is that,as individuals, you will choosea positive state of mind, be-cause then life becomes beauti-ful and don’t forget to seeyourself as part of the commu-nity. Allow yourself to embraceeach and every God-given dayand always be open to thepower of a giving spirit, for inthat you will experience truefulfilment. The wise man said: “May we

all embrace change and to beable to change anything in life, begin with the simple first stepof changing yourself.”As you choose a positive state

of mind, and in choosing to bepositive, may you experiencethe success, health and fulfil-ment you desire and deserve in2014.One last thought: Life is short

and time truly waits for noman, so make your life countfor something, a good start willbe to invest in the life ofanother whether it be in the lifeof love ones or in the life of aperfect stranger.Happy new year to all!

Regarding the query by AlisonSamuels of Goodwood (Tyger-Burger, 4 December), maleroosters are definitely notallowed in Cape Town suburbsaccording to the city’s bylawand policy on this matter. Up tofive free-range poultry hens areallowed, but no poultry that arelikely to cause a nuisance arepermitted (e.g. roosters, geese, turkeys and peacocks).A permit to keep poultry is

required from the municipalitywhere more than five femalehens are kept, and variousother conditions must be met

Re: Disabled bays (SMS,18/12/2013):Yes, come on, the people who

do not possess the legal disa-bled “Blue and white card orsticker” for the disabled bays, should be considerate of thosewho have to use those designat-ed bays. Are the healthy and “abled”

people too lazy to walk a bitfrom the parking bays to theentrance and vice versa? Shameon you, although I suppose youwon’t even be bothered shouldyou be reading this. What goes around comes

around some day, so thinktwice before you park in thedisabled bays.Re: Keeping clean of the area

around your house (“Don’tmake your problems mine”,TygerBurger, 11 December): Yesif you have any pride inyourself and your surroundingsit’s not such a big deal to justevery day take a quick walkoutside the property to see ifit’s clean. The council sends out a

group of “ladies” once in a bluemoon to supposedly clean upthe gutter, pick up litter, butmore than once I have seenthem-so laid back, resting ontheir brooms, talking on theircellphones and plonkingthemselves down on thepavement/sidewalks.Is that what they call work-

SLICE OF LIFE

Vanjaar se verkiesing kan so ’n skielike

Maar of hierdie nou ’n perdjaar is of

nie: klim stewig in die saal, kap jouhakke in, and have one helluva ride!

HOOFARTIKEL

- Anoniem

V Ag nee, manne! As julle so “smart” is, open jul eie perfekte taximaatskappy en opponeer hulle.Sterkte! - Phil, Plattekloof (Skuldbult)

Daar is sobaie werkloosheid. Plaas by elke brandpunt ’n opgeleide verkeerskonstabel. Kykmaar net in Bellvillemiddestad se hoofweg.

- Elise

Richard Holman (3/15)was dieGoodwood-span se suksesvolste bou-ler.

V In die vorige reeks wedstryde einde ver-

lede jaar het Edgemead (227/7) die span vanRondebosch (111) ’n groot loesing toegediendanksy die bydraes van veral Stefan Joubert(81), Christo Jooste (60*) en Morné Heyneke(6/21).Milnerton (108/2)was te sterk vir Sea-crest (107) náknaphupstote deurChris Free-man (56*) enRobin vanHarte (3/19). Noorde-likes-Goodwood het egter op sy baadjie ge-kry van Helderberg, terwyl Tygerberg-klub(168) naelskraap deur WP-klub (169/9) ge-klop is.
