Bosman adds, however, that no one wouldbe unwelcome at Eric Miles as long as theycan cover their individual shortfalls and ifthere is space available.

If the six residents pay the shortfall on amonthly basis, or if the home fills their spots

with residents who are able to, then thehome will finally balance its books.

Their plea for funding has never dissipat-ed, but it can be argued that they are now, more than ever, in need of financial assist-ance.

Bosman concluded: “We have been told bythe government that we are a sterling exam-ple of how a home can cut costs and makedo with little money, yet when we told themof our plight they just said that we wouldhave to close our doors.”

Promoting safe circumcisionA campaign to promote medical male

circumcision (MMC) has beenstepped up in the Western Cape with

the launch of two mobile surgeries.Circumcision, which can be performed in

only 30 minutes, reduces HIV as well as sex-ually transmitted infections.

The mobile surgeries, about the size of anaverage bread truck, will travel through theWinelands, Overberg and Eden areas in theWestern Cape, stopping off at towns, villag-es and communities along the way.

The SACTWU Worker Health Pro-gramme (SWHP) officially presented themobile units at a community soccer eventat Stellenbosch this weekend.

WHP has partnered with the WesternCape Health Department, as well as the Des-mond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) at Stellen-bosch University’s Parow campus to help tospread awareness of MMC at nine clinics inthe Winelands and in and around CapeTown.

Research trials in South Africa, Kenyaand Uganda have shown that MMC reducesthe risk of contracting HIV by 60%. The gov-ernment has set a target of medically cir-cumcising 4.3 million men in South Africaby 2016.

Dayanund Loykissoonlal, programmemanager for MMC in the National Depart-ment of Health says: “It’s an ambitious goal, but we want to ensure we achieve it. By get-ting circumcised, as well as using condomsand taking care of your health, HIV could

be reduced remarkably.”Over 1.3 million men have been circum-

cised in South Africa since the governmentlaunched its MMC campaign in 2010.

MMC is potentially a life-saving proce-dure for thousands of South Africans by re-ducing the risk of HIV transmission be-tween heterosexuals.

“We’re finding very few men are askingfor MMC at clinics. We need to think out ofthe box – so we’ll be launching radio adverts

and putting branding on taxis and spazashops to encourage men to get medicallycircumcised through our ‘get wise, circum-cise’ campaign,” said Nikki Soboil, CEO ofSWHP.

A cartoon character called Clever Dick isthe campaign’s ambassador. At the launch, men and women gathered at the sportsground in Stellenbosch to play five-a-sidesoccer. Men also popped in to the mobilesurgical theatres to be circumcised.

A financial workshop for domestic workersand gardeners was held Parow golf club lastweek, outlining the basics of saving and fi-nancial planning for low-income earners.

Craig Torr, a financial advisor from Pine-lands presented the workshop as part of Fi-nancial Planning Week from 25 to 29 Au-gust. Despite being poorly attended, thehandful of attendees peppered Torr withquestions about how to get out of the debtcycle and start saving and investing.

The hour-long session focused on plan-ning your budget and making changes inorder to reduce debt.

“The moment you borrow money to buysomething, is when your problems be-gin,”he warned. “The Xhosa word for loanshark, matshonisa, literally means ‘the per-son who sinks you’. And still we borrowmoney from him. Why do we do that?”

Torr blames misleading advertising thatlures consumers into borrowing and spend-ing instead of saving. He advises to ratherwrite down all expenses to see where thebudget can be cut down.

“Maybe a little less on cigarettes, beer orairtime. Maybe you say for six months youare not going to buy any clothes. So you

bring your total expenses down to less thanwhat you are earning. So now you have ex-tra. Pay that money back to your debtors, pay them back more than they are asking. When you’ve paid off your debt, you neverborrow again,” he advises.

One of the tips he gave was to pay a littlemore every month to the debtor you oweleast, thus finishing that debt first.

According to Torr, the biggest evil is theso-called hire-purchase shopping, whereyou make a monthly payment- on just oneitem. “After 24 months you will pay be-tween R12 000 and R14 000 for somethingthat would have cost R10 000 cash. For 24months you pay more than you shouldhave, this is where you could have boughtfood, airtime and paid school fees. At theend of the day you are giving away the mon-ey because you were not prepared to waituntil you had enough money.”

He added that if you are saving you canhave so much, but if you are borrowing, you have so little. Torr advised that thebank is the best place to borrow money, where interest is the lowest. He urged peo-ple to open savings accounts for savingssuch as for school fees, holidays and even-tualities like funerals.V For more information contact Tamsin at pa@veritaswealth.co.za or 021 671 0799.

Advice on reducing debt

A domestic dispute escalated to atense hostage situation and an at-tempted suicide last week.

It is suspected that a Parklands couplehad an argument on Thursday morning, whichbuilt in intensity in themind of theman throughout the day.Later that night, fumingwith anger, he

showed up at the woman’s place of workand held her hostage. Two hours later hestabbed her in the head and then tried tocut his own wrists.Table View police spokesperson, W/O

Daphne O’Reilly, says the woman worksat a video store inAshwood Centre, Park-lands.“An unresolved argument resulted in

all of this. Theman turned up at the videostore just after 19:30, probablywith the in-tention of carrying on this dispute,” saysO’Reilly. The man then apparently took out a

knife and forced it against the woman’sthroat.Peoplewhowitnessed the incidentimmediately notified the police andwith-in minutes they arrived on the scene.A hostage negotiator and the task force

were also called in once the situationwasassessed.“The hostage negotiator tried his best

to diffuse the tension, but despite beingin there for a long time hewas unable to,”she continues.“The man then stabbed the woman in

her head and then he cut his ownwrists.”It was around about this time when on-

lookers claimed they saw flashes andheard bangs. It was believed that shots had been

fired, but the police did not confirm this. However, two stun grenades were appar-ently used to disorientate the suspect.Just after the suspect had slit his

wrists, the task force swept down on thepremises and both the man and the wom-an were rushed to Somerset Hospital af-

ter receiving immediate medical atten-tion. “Everything was over just after22:00,” says O’Reilly, confirming that thecouple are on the road to recovery. The man is facing charges of assault

with the intent to commit grievous bodilyharm.O’Reilly adds that even though hostage

situations are rare in Cape Town, thereare always trained negotiators on handto respond. Most of them are police officers, so hos-

tage negotiation isn’t their only responsi-bility.Domestic disputes and abuse within

families are rife, however.O’Reilly emphasises that there are

many avenues a person who feels threat-ened by his/her partner can take.“We have organisations such as the

Community Intervention Centre andFamilies South Africa (Famsa) who canhelp people to resolve domestic disputes. One can also get a protection order, sothere are structures inplace tohelp some-one.“People don’t need to suffer through

abuse alone,” she emphasised. The identity of the couple is beingwith-

held until themanhas appeared in court.

One of the bystanders took this unclearphoto of the negotiator talking to thesuspect and his hostage.

the future sustainability of our reserves, but we need members of the public to sup-port our reserves,” says the City’s maycomember for economic, environmental andspatial planning, Johan van der Merwe.Pre-registration is vital.

Smatterings of the invasive wild sunflo-wer have been spotted in Melkbosstrand,Parklands and various places in the nort-hern suburbs. The largest groupwas found inAtlantis,

where a recentwildfire left the site distur-bed, allowing the wild sunflower to esta-blish itself. If left unmanaged, the wild sunflower

has the potential to take over this site andsuppress the fynbos from recovering afterthe fire.“The flower heads and seeds have been

Some people go to the mall to shop.Others prefer going there to bear shield,

laser flip and perform ludicrous ollies.CanalWalkwas the place to be on Sunday

when the best skaters in South Africa com-peted for a spot at the KDC world champs. And not a single bone was broken. They fell, of course, but these artists

know how to look cool while doing so.Falling is just a by-product of outrageous-

ness. But that rule might ormight not be appli-

cable in this situation.Anyway, the KDC Grand Slam event was

powered by 5FM and offered three days ofnon-stop skateboarding action this wee-kend.Prizes worth R50 000, as well as an all-ex-

penses paid trip to compete in the Kimber-ley Diamond Cup world skateboardingchampionships, were up for grabs.Shoppers were left in awe at the tricks

these acrobatic lunatics were performing-and all of it right in the middle of the mall. This was the fourth and last grand slam

event of the year and rumours have it thatCape Town kickflips Kimberley, pop-sho-ves Johannesburg and nose grinds Durban.

urges other communities to follow Rade-man’s example and do the groundwork toraise the funds needed to make the dreamsa reality. In Highcliff Crescent, a group of

residents contributed towards the cost ofthe jungle-gym and the City covered thecosts of the bench, dustbin and trees, aswellas helping residents feel drawn to visit thepark again.Rademan says he approachedthe crescent’s Facebook group and asked lo-cals for donations.

Bettering the community“We raised just over a thousand rand, and

with the help of Melanie Apostoli-Parkingwe found a second-hand jungle-gym that wecould afford,” says Rademan. He thankedthe City, resident Rory Keane for helpingout, and every single person who contribut-ed towards this project.“Now Leané will not only be able to play

on the equipment, but also make friendswith the neighbourhood kids. That is howI grew up and I want the same for her! I alsothought it might be a good place for parentsto meet each another and get to know theirneighbours a little better.”Brenner concludes: “In most situations

the City will contribute towards the upkeepof these parks. There are, of course, certainconditions of what the community may ormay not do.”

Explore untouched trails in the Table Baynature reserve this spring. TheCity of CapeTown invites all Capetonians and touriststo undertake guided nature walks throughthe nature reserve to celebrate the arrivalof Spring. The walks are to take place from14 to 21 September at 10:30 each day.

During these guided walks, participantswill be able to explore normally inaccessi-ble parts of the City of Cape Town’s TableBay reserve, which has been nominated asthe reserve of the year for two consecutiveyears. Outdoor enthusiasts can look for-ward to being guided by a top nature con-servation specialist, while being accompa-nied through the southern area of the re-serve. “This is yet another innovation inourquest to ensure the sustainability of ourreserves. We can, however, only achievethiswith the support ofmembersof thepub-lic,” says the City’s mayco member for eco-nomic, environmental and spatial plan-ning, Johan van der Merwe.

One of the reserve’s hidden gems is thetreasure chest of Cape Flats sand fynbos in-side the old Milnerton racecourse, withover 200 species in less than 20 ha of land.

Many of these species are in flower in Sep-tember. This vegetation type is criticallyendangered and not normally accessible tothe public. The rapid urbanisation of CapeTown has transformed approximately 84%of the original extent of this uniquely CapeTown vegetation type. Of the 16% that isleft, the City of Cape Town owns and active-ly manages and conserves about 1.5%, withthe majority of the remainder being underprivate ownership.

Visitors might also be lucky enough tospot one of the resident Cape grysbokkiesor even the Cape clawless otter, watermon-goose, angulate tortoises, marsh terrapinsas well as numerous species of butterfliesand just over 100 species of birds.

Participants are asked to meet at the pu-blic open space right next to the road at thethird traffic circle on Grand National boul-evard in Royal Ascot, Milnerton, on themornings of thewalks. All children arewel-come, but no pets will be permitted.

Booking is essential as there is limitedspace available. There is no cost involved.V For enquiries or bookings, contact Landi Louw [email protected] or on 021 444 7218.

Residents andbusinesseswhich gener-ate their own electricity via renewa-ble energy sources will soon have the

option of feeding a limited amount of theirsurplus energy back into the grid. Thiswillbe used as an incentive to be off-set againsttheir electricity accounts.

The implementation of the small-scaleembedded generation (SSEG) tariffs willmake it legally possible to feed electricalpower back into the municipal grid. MostSSEGprojects generate electricity from re-newable sources such as the sun andwind.

According to Clive Justus, chairpersonof sub council 4, the City is embracingSSEG technology to assist with the coun-

try’s acute power shortage.“Bydoing so,weare assisting businesses

and households to minimise their ownelectricity consumption,” he says.

Consumers who wish to feed SSEG-gen-erated electricity into the municipal elec-tricity grid will be required to have a bi-di-rectional advanced meter infrastructure(AMI) installed by the City at their owncost

Reaching the targetThe City’s Electricity Services Depart-

ment is finalising the outstanding costswhich will enable the City to provide resi-dents and businesses with an off-set for

feeding power back into the municipalgrid.Anannouncement about the first con-sumer to be signing the SSEG agreementwith the City is imminent.

It is a legal requirement that consumerswishing to connect SSEG to the grid mustobtain consent in writing from the Direc-tor of Electricity Services.

According to Justus, the City has set it-self a target of sourcing 10% of its electrici-ty from renewable energy resources by2020 and the roll-out of the small-scale em-beddedgeneration tariff supports this goal.

In a pilot project, a small number of resi-dential, industrial and commercial con-sumers have already connected rooftop

photovoltaic (PV) generation to the City’selectricity grid.

Everyone benefitsHowever, conventional metering instal-

lations does not allow for a two-way flowof electricity and the City has been hostinga project that is searching for a solutionthat will allow consumers to feed powerback into the grid and to receive an off-setby doing so.

“The implementation of the small-scaleembedded generation (SSEG) tariffs willmake it legally possible to feed electricalpower back into the municipal grid,” saysJustus.

National Book Week ends on 7 Septemberand in this time library patrons have the op-portunity to return overdue material toCity libraries without having to pay fines.

A joint initiative between the Departmentof Arts and Culture and the South AfricanBook Development Council, the week aimsto promote and embrace the value of read-ing. This year’s theme is “Going Places” fo-cusing on the power of books and how theycan take you places – both in terms ofprogress and imagination.

Reading statistics show that only 14% ofthe South African population are activebook readers, and only 5% of parents readto their children.

“National Book Week is an important ini-tiative in encouraging the nation to valuereading as a fun and pleasurable activityand to showcase how reading can easily beincorporated into one’s daily lifestyle,” saysthe City’s mayco member for CommunityServices and Special Projects, BelindaWalker.

“Returning long overdue books is some-thing everyone loathes doing. It leaves usfeeling like naughty school children, sheep-ishly approaching the library counter mut-tering excuses. But any library materialsreturned late during National Book Weekare exempt from a fine for this week only,”Walker says.

Return those books – no fines

Five tourists were killed and 20 others in-jured when two buses collided in CenturyCity on 29 August.

Or at least, that is what it seemed like tocasual bystanders.

But the horrific bus crash was in fact a re-alistically simulated enactment, aimed attesting the emergency preparedness of re-sponse teams.

The bodies of the ‘dead’ and ‘injured’ werelying around as if they had been thrownfrom the vehicles upon impact.

Up to 50 emergency personnel workedfrantically to ‘save the lives’ of those mostseriously ‘injured’.

The simulated accident was captured onCCTV by Century City staff in their controlroom, who immediately called the CenturyCity’s emergency response vehicles to thescene. They also called ER24 and dialled theCity of Cape Town’s 107 emergency line.

First to arrive were five Century Cityemergency response vehicles manned by Se-

curitas personnel. The trained paramedicsascertained who were the most seriously in-jured and tended to them. The air waspierced with sirens when they were joinedby a stream of no less than 13 emergency

vehicles from ER24, City Disaster Manage-ment and Cape Metro with ambulances fer-rying the ‘injured’ to hospital in droves.Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century CityProperty Owners’ Association, which is the

NPO responsible for the day-to-day runningof the Century City precinct, said the simu-lated exercise included the City’s DisasterManagement for the first time.

So did they pass the practice exercise? Yes,say the top brass who were monitoring theresponse readiness of all the teams involved.A full debriefing will be held with all partiesto see which improvements can be made.

Blackshaw said this is the fourth consecu-tive year that Century City has staged a ma-jor emergency simulation exercise to testhow prepared the medical emergency teamsare. Last year a stolen car crashed after ex-changing fire with police, in 2012 there wasa simulated cash-in-transit heist on CenturyCity boulevard and the year before that amajor road accident involving ER helicop-ters airlifted the ‘injured’ to hospital.

“These training exercises play an impor-tant role in checking response readiness andidentifying any areas for improvement,” hesaid.

Being infatuatedwith fitness has its ad-vantages.For one, you can go to Zofingen and

cycle and run up and down the Swiss Alps. For most of us, it’s exhausting just look-

ing at the elevation graph of the DuathlonWorld Championships in Switzerland, nev-er mind actually doing it. Yet, Milnerton’sRohan Kennedy and Table View’s Annieand Mark Lemmon are expected to be con-quering this route in double quick time onSunday 7 September.Last year in October, TygerBurger came

as close to the actual physical exertion asit could when it ran an article about the

Lemmons’ latest exploits in Switzerland. The article read: “Annie (whose real age

is 26 and ID age is 52) and Mark (whose IDtells him he’s 48, despite feeling 22) camethird and 13th in their age groups respec-tively.”This year Annie claims her parents must

have falsified her ID, because it indicatesthat she is 53 years old.The spring chicken Rohan is 34.Last year theMellons took an hour off the

time clocked in 2012, and this year they’reaiming to cut it down even more.“Can you believe we need to go and climb

the same mountains again?” she says witha hint of exasperation. The duathlon is reserved for a special

kind of person who can run 10 km, cycle150 km, and then run again for 30 km.“It’s extremely tough, but the three of us

like tough. We thrive on those Swiss moun-tains and love to see how far we can pushthe limits of our bodies and ourminds,” sheelaborates.“During someof our training sessions the

wind can be very horrible and cold, and youoften think, ‘Why am I doing this?’ Yourmind starts playing tricks on you. But thenyou come to the realisation that you’re un-doubtedly preparing in more difficult con-ditions than some of the other competitors. It is hardly surprising to see us training inthe rain. Some rainy mornings when westart, Rohan and Kelly van der Toorn fromTable Viewwill just be returning from a sixhour ride.”While listening to Annie, one would be

forgiven for thinking Table View and Mil-nerton is the fitness capital of SouthAfrica. This week Monday Annie, Mark and Ro-

han departed for Europe, but before theygot on the plane Annie gave a parting shotto all the couch potatoes out there.“Get off your asses and start doing a

sport!“The thrills you get when achieving and

how your body reacts to the limits you setfor it is just amazing. The feel-good factoris awesome!”

I would like to commend andthank you on the wonderfularticle about the way Dianehandled the criticism (“Beautyqueen overcomes criticism”-TygerBurger, 27 August). As the director of the Mrs

Cape Town pageant I can onlysay we are proud of Diane. Shehas grown immensely in thetwo years we know her.The first thing we noticed

when we met her, is herpassion for life and people. Lastyear was a growing process forher and this year she steppedinto the shoes of Mrs CapeTown perfectly.Hosting pageants for women

across the country, we natural-ly deal with women from allwalks of life. They often don’tunderstand what the RoleMod-

els SA pageants is about –when not winning, they canbecome nasty and try to justifyit as a fault of the organisers orjudges. What we appreciate about

Diane is that she took ourconstructive criticism and cameback to try again – and shedefinitely played to win. Shesurpassed expectations in tasksset for her and proved to be thebest candidate for the job. This title is a platform from

which to make a difference inthe lives of others and to be avoice for those who are notbeing heard.I have been criticised for

allowing women of all sizes toparticipate in the pageants, butunlike other beauty pageants, this pageant is about servingthe community.I believe curvaceous women

are also beautiful and happierpeople as they are not asfocused on their looks. We appreciate the support.

The Ballistics get a little silly during their visit on the Orange Couch.

The Ballistics blast offwith new tour and EPLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

With a new album and a new name,The Ballistics have had a very busyyear.

When TygerBurger last spoke to theNorthern suburbs band, they had just re-leased their debut EP and were playing un-der the name Ballistic Blues.Last year the band were joint winners of

the Rolling Stone Rockstarter competition(sharing the title with Cortina Whiplash)which kicked open the doors to the SouthAf-rican music industry. Thanks to their involvement in the compe-

tition, they got to perform at Oppikoppi, toured Gauteng, were featured in the SouthAfrican edition of Rolling Stone magazineand, most importantly, got the opportunityto record their full-length album at VH Mu-sic and Publishing in Joostenbergvlakte.

Not just the bluesBallistic decided to change their name

slightly in order to steer clear of alienatingpotential new fans who might put them ina box before hearing them.“We started out as a solid blues band and

only played blues-orientated gigs,” explainslead guitarist, Tyan Odendal. But theirsoundhas evolved and the bandhave startedplaying music with other influences to newcrowds who weren’t necessarily into blues.“We’re not just blues anymore,” Tyan says.“We thought we’d broaden our horizons,”

adds bassist JP le Roux.Frontman, Nick Forbes, says the new al-

bum is a collection of their best work overthe past few years.

When it all comes togetherWhile their roots are still in blues, Nick

says Calling for the Crazy has elements ofpop and jazz, before hastily adding: “I thinkit’s full-on rock actually.”The band did some pre-production for the

albumwith Basson Laubscher before spend-ing 10 days in the VH studio recording thealbum.JP points out that you’d have to go to a

show or experience their music for yourselfto pinpoint their sound.“We are four different people and we have

different music influences and when it allcomes together it kind of makes somethingnew,” he says. The band are planning a newmusic video,

launching their music on on-line platformsand releasing of a new single over the nextfewmonths, all between touring throughoutSeptember. A coastal tour may be in thepipeline in December.“We want to get our album out to as many

people as possible, in as many places as pos-sible,” Tyan says.In the meantime, Capetonians can go to

their gig at Dizzy’s in Camps Bay on Fridayfrom 21:00. Tickets for the show cost R40 andwill be available at the door where you’ll al-so be able to pick up a copy of Calling forthe Crazy.V The Ballistics visited the Orange Couch to givereaders a taste of their new album. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their performance and interview.

Milnerton Players will be hosting their nextsocial evening on Friday 5 September from20:00.This month’s entertainment will include

a guest performance by Vocal Unity, a choirmade up of mostly professional performersunder the direction of localmusician and en-tertainer, Jeremy Quickfall. Although stillin its infancy, this groupwill tackle any rep-ertoire that crosses its path, from FreddieMercury and Stephen Sondheim to KarlJenkins, Pentatonix and even LaurikaRauch.Quickfall is also the musical director for

the Players forthcoming musical produc-tion, The World Goes ‘Round, the songs ofKander & Ebb.The five talented singers whomake up the

cast of this fast moving revue will then per-form a few of the musical numbers as a fore-taste of the show.”The evening takes place at thePlayhouse’s

cosy redecorated foyer/café theatre with afully licenses bar and coffee bar. Chips andchocolates will also be available.

V Entrance costs R5 for members and R10 for nonmembers. No booking is required.

Powerful drivers at Power seriesADRIAN PHEIFFER

With former top European F3 driverSam Dejonghe on a fleeting visit tothe Cape for just one race, Satur-

day’s Mutlu Batteries Classic Car event atKillarney should be action-packed.The youngBelgian driver alreadyhad one

F3 championship victory to his name in thecurrent season, when he decided to switchto sports car racing.Hewill be at thewheel of hisDutchmanag-

er, Jan-Willem de la Porte’s powerful ChevCanAmV8 thisweekendat thePowerSeries, which is sponsored by Wingfield Motors.

However he is only due to arrive on Thurs-day which places him at a huge disadvan-tage against Bellville’s Trevor Momberg, who will be competing on his home circuitin his super quick Ford Capri. The Germanic dominance of the Midas

Clubman category sees a trio of Beemers inthe hands of the spectacular Danie vanNiekerk, Ebrahim Levy and Truspe Schoe-man up against reigning champion AndreJohnson (Audi A4).However some surprises may be in store

from the likes of Golfer, Clint Rennard whois currently hot property, or possibly Bren-nan Green in a class X Audi A4.

Behind them, the class B, BMW’s GaryMainwaring andMansoor Parkerwill be do-ing well if they can stay ahead of GavinCerff’s flying Golf. We are also well advisedto keep an eye onBrett Roach in the JiveGTiChallenge events. While he has always been quick, this fire-

brand also acquired a human wrecking ballstatus early in his career. However that seems to have been shelved

of late and his battle with Andrew Goslettand Bessie Bester, as well as Nian du Toit(who starts as the overall favourite) could bea close one.The V8Masters and theMakita Supercars

are going to be back in action after their Na-mibian desert adventure last month. Thehead of the Supercar field is likely to be dis-puted between Nick Adcock and Table Viewstar Brad Wadeley, while Parow-based Ga-rethEasomandStuart Spooner are probablygoing to be the drivers to beat in the silverand bronze classes. An excellent performance by veteran Pao-

lo Cavalieri inWindhoek, where he finishedsecond to Marcel Angel, has seen himemerge as the dark horse in theMasters cat-egory. It is now going to be interesting to seewhether he can match up to guys like CraigJarvis and Charles Arton.

In diehalfeindronde was J.G.
