CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES: CITY TO REMOVE NEW SHACKS

Some 218 families have illegally jumpedthe queue for housing in Joe SlovoPark.

This “unfortunate” state of affairs has in-furiated the community and the City of CapeTown.Ward councillor Joy McCarthy exclaimed

yesterday that it is “absolute nonsense”.A piece of city-owned land that has been

earmarked for residential and commercialuse, which will undoubtedly benefit the JoeSlovo community in the long run, has beensubjected to an“orchestrated land invasion”according to McCarthy.

ShacksMore than 40 shacks housing 218 families

have been erected on the land since late last

year.The city has since been forced to apply for

an interdict to prevent the transgressorsfrom building any further structures.Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral

committee member for human settlements,says: “As a Caring City, we are sympatheticto their plight, and are investing in provid-ing adequate and dignified human settle-ments across Cape Town; however in thiscase we cannot allow individuals to settle onland that has been earmarked by variouscity departments for broader developmentin the area. The city’s prioritymust be to en-sure that any future development is notblocked by illegal land invasion – to the ben-efit of all residents in the area.”He echoesMcCarthywhenhe says that the

illegal invasion is unfair to those residentswho are on the city’s housing database and

legitimately awaiting housing opportuni-ties.

New homesMcCarthy, however, says that the city

now has to provide alternative accommoda-tion to the occupants, and she emphasisesthat they must be happy with their newhomes.She admits that the situation concerns her

and reveals that executivemayorPatricia deLille will personally address the communitysome time in February.Dialogue alone might not be enough to ap-

pease everyone, as Sonnenbergmuses: “Thecity has explained the situation to the groupin the past and has engaged with them onnumerous occasions to try and find alterna-tive solutions, but they have remained onthe land and have steadily increased the size

of the settlement.“This is despite agreements that no fur-

ther units would be built following the ini-tial 40 units that were constructed late lastyear.“There are now 218 families living on the

site, who have used leftover material fromother projects to construct their units.”He concludes by saying that this has led

to the city applying for an interdict againstthe construction of any further structures“as all other paths have proved unsuccess-ful”.The city has apparently not applied for an

eviction order at this stage and will only doso if the interdict to cease expansion on thesite is not adhered to.In the interim, the city’s anti-land inva-

sion unit will continue to take down any ille-gal structures that are erected.

Developers of the new Centre PointShopping Centre in Milnerton assurethe public that, despite delays,everything is on track for construction to start imminently. The existingstructure, which now resembles aforgotten ghost ship, was supposedto be demolished in the middle oflast year. A dog that had been living on her own forabout four months at the Cobble Walk shop-ping centre in Durbanville, has been cap-tured recently and is now looking for a lova-ble forever home.The dog, which has a keen preference for

KFC, has either run away from home or hasbeen abandoned by her family.“Whichever it was, no family has come

forward to claim her so far,” said Joan Mas-terson of the Petfinders organisation.“She evaded capture for months until we

managed to secure a humane dog trap fromthe SPCA.“We put some KFC in it and finally man-

aged to rescue this little dog on Sunday 13January,” Masterson explained the rescueoperation.“She has turned out to be a real little dar-

ling – very playful, loves people and otherdogs and loves kids,” she added.They now need to find a home for her as

themanwho rescued her, has three largeAl-sations who are not taking too kindly to her.“However, we found that she has become

very attached to her ‘rescue daddy’ as ahome was found for her with a family witha labrador.“The two dogs got on like a house on fire

– until the ‘rescue daddy’ left!” she said.“So, she has ‘separation issues’.“We are looking for someone that will

adopt her who is at home most of the day,has a very secure yard and that will give herspecial love and attention so that she can be-come an integrated part of a family again.She would have to be an inside doggy. So

far we have not found that special person orfamily.“She is black and white, three years old

A 30-year-old Tanzanian international wasarrested this week Monday when heroinwith a street value of R67 000 was found inhis house by Maitland police members.This follows the arrest of another suspect

when the Maitland crime prevention unitconfiscated dagga estimated at R25 000 at ahouse in Brooklyn.Local police spokesperson, W/O Siyabule-

la Vukubi elaborates on the latest incident:“At approximately 10:30 on Monday ourmembers confiscated the heroin at a house

inMaitland. The arrest is the result of the in-formation received by police members thatdrugs were being sold at that particular ad-dress. We immediately searched the houseand recovered three units of unga (heroin),three packets of unknownpowder foundwiththe unga, a mixer machine allegedly used tomix drugs, and cash.”Meanwhile on 8 January members re-

ceived information about drugs at a house inAvondrus Street. They discovered 5,1 kg ofcompressed and loose dagga.

can woman to swim an Ice Mile‚ hasraised the bar yet again. On Saturday 22December this plucky young womanachieved two world records by complet-ing a harrowing swim of more than 33kilometres around Robben Island in just12 hours and 23 minutes.Cecilia initiallymade headlines by be-

coming the first South African womanto swim an icemile‚ and the first womanto be accepted into the International IceSwimming Association, after competingin the Speedo Ice Swim Africa event inJuly 2011, a record she still holds.She is also known for her record-

breaking swim done last year, from BigBay around Robben Island and back, amarathon swim of about 23 kilometres.She was the first person to brave thisdaunting challenge.Her more recent attempt, the record-

breaking swimencirclingRobben Islandthrice (almost the distance of the Eng-lish Channel), has never been undertak-en before.“I had to get through quite a bit to get

ready for this swim due to a bike acci-dent earlier this year in which I injuredmy arm. But thanks to Dr Bruce Harrisfrom Westlake Chiropractic and DNAn-alysis which helped me get insight intothe strengths and weaknesses in my

body, I could get ready in time for theswim,” Cecilia said.Wearing only her Speedo bather, cap

and goggles she started her swim, alsoknown as the Robben Island Circle ofLife Swim, at the Oceana Boat Club nearthe V&A Waterfront at 07:00.Rough ocean conditions and heavy

swell slowed down her progress consid-erably.“This forced me to swim further out

to sea to evade being dumped onto thereef.”The swim was done strictly in accord-

ancewith the rules of the Cape LongDis-tance Swimming Association, the onlyofficial body to officiate over solo swimsin Cape Town waters in South Africa,and elsewhere in the country on request.Accompanied by her support team she

swam her way into the record books.“Nelson Mandela was already in jail

An informal music quiz to help pass thetime during a long road trip sparked theidea for a fundraising event to help a localhome for disabled residents.“For some light entertainment, on a re-turn car journey from Windhoek, where anumber of Scottish free masons had beento conduct a masonic installation ceremo-ny, we used an iPod to have a music quiz,”said Chris Turner.“Therewere only five of us in the car andthe range of musical knowledge was quiterevealing, from hardly any to almost (wellnot quite) expert.“Wewere having somuch fun that beforewe knew it five to six hours had past andwe were almost home.“Every time we met after that trip themusicquizwasmentionedandsobegan theidea of having it on amuch larger scale andto try and raise some funds for a deservingcause,” Chris explained.

Having a long association with the EricMilesCheshireHome in Sandrift and beingwell aware of their needs and the goodwork that the staff do in caring for the resi-dents, Chris suggested them as the benefi-ciary.A total of 140 ticketswere sold for amusictrivia quiz evening to individuals rangingfrom teenagers to pensioners.The patronswere treated to ameal of fishand chips and were quizzed onmusic ques-tions that spanned from the 1950s up towhat is being played presently. “Everyonewho attended had a thoroughly enjoyableevening and some even managed to leavewith prizes,” Chris said.The event raised R7 960 and the DistrictGrand Lodge for Scottish FreeMasonry de-cided to add R2 040 to round the donationup to R10 000.“We intend to make this an annualevent,” Chris said.

A vegetation fire in Maitland on Saturdayhas resulted in the City of Cape Town’sbuilding inspectorate declaring abrick andmortar building “unsafe” after it was rav-aged in the blaze. The cause of the fire re-mains under investigation.Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, the head ofSystems Integration, Special Projects andDisaster Operations of the Disaster RiskManagement Centre, elaborates: “The fireand rescue services were dispatched to abush and grass fire incident at the BlackRiver Parkway in Maitland. Upon arrivalan extensive area of vegetation was alight.

The fire spread to the reeds and neighbour-ing properties and caused structural dam-age. About an hour after the call was re-ceived the firefighters successfully con-tained the threat.”A granny flat and a backyard dwellingwere damaged by the fire, but just the gran-ny flat was declared unsafe.The city’s disaster response teams assist-ed two adults and three minors with socialrelief aid that includes food parcels, cloth-ing, andblankets.Abuilding starterkit hasbeen issued to the fire victims that lived inthe backyard dwelling.

A fire in Du Noon on Friday night at 23:08destroyed five shacks and left 20 people dis-placed.Fortunately no injuries were reportedaccording to Wilfred Solomons-Johannes,the head of Systems Integration, SpecialProjects and Disaster Operations of theDisaster Risk Management Centre.He adds that thisweekendalone sporadicfires in informal settlements in Cape Townresulted in the death of a three-year-old boyand left 32 people homeless.

The city’s disaster response teams assist-ed the fire victims with the supply of foodparcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing andbuilding material; including emergencytrauma counselling.The Disaster Risk Management Centreencourages residents to be fire safe whenworking with open flames. When going tobed, residents should isolate electrical de-vices and extinguish gas burners, candles,lamps and paraffin stoves in order to pre-vent fires.

Shack fires kill 1, displace 32

The getaway vehicle of two housebreakingsuspects was spotted in the Maitland pre-cinct an hour after they allegedly stoleitems from a house in Parow.Const Lorenzo Johnson of Maitland po-lice single-handedly arrested the suspectslast Wednesday when he saw their BMWmatched thedescriptionof the getawaycar.W/O Siyabulela Vukubi, spokespersonforMaitland police elaborates: “At approx-imately 11:20 last Wednesday the suspectsallegedly robbed a house in Parow. One ofthe suspects is believed to have held the do-

mestic worker at gunpoint while the otherransacked the house. They managed to getawaywith a digital camera and some jewel-lery.”Johnson then spotted the suspects’ vehi-cle in Voortrekker Road.Two suspects (aged 27 and 32) were ar-rested for house robbery.The stolen items were recovered in thevehicle and the suspects were detained atParow police station.V Anyone with more information is requested tocontact Parow police on 021 929 7000.

When Beakie had an unfortunate run-inwith a car in Simon’s Town in October, itwas clear that dining on fish would in futu-re present a problem for this cute penguin.Knocked down by a speeding vehicle his lo-wermandible was severely damaged by theimpact of the car and his lower beak splitin half.The bird was brought to the rehabilitati-

on centre of theSouthernAfricanFoundati-on for the Conservation of Coastal Birds(Sanccob) in Table View where the veteri-nary team tried several procedures, but tono avail.Not ready to give up, Sanccob’s rehabili-

tation manager, Nicky Stander, consulteda former Sanccob vet, Dr TertiusGous, whoin turn got in touch with Dr Gerard Steen-kamp, an experienced veterinary dentistbased at the University of Pretoria.After examining photos of the penguin’s

beak, Dr Steenkamp was confident that hecould mend the mandible and offered to dothe reconstructive surgery free of charge.Tracy Shaw, from the National Zoologi-

cal Gardens (NZG) in Pretoria agreed to ta-ke care of the penguin at the zoo.With a flight-sponsorship by Bid Air Car-

go (CapeTown), Beakiewas flown to Johan-nesburg in his own personal “enclosure”and was taken to the faculty of veterinaryscience of the University of Pretoria in On-derstepoort in preparation for the big day.On 18 December, he had a CT scan and DrSteenkamp performed the surgery.When the brave little patient came to, he

had a beautiful new beak, with the help ofsome delicately placed stitches, pins, wire,and dental acrylic.The operation was very successful and

Beakie was taken to the NZG to get back onhis feet.Since the operation, Beakie has been un-

der the post-operative care of Dr Adrian

Tordiffe, who administered a 14-day courseof antibiotics to fight off anypotential infec-tions to the wound. The first few days hewas very sleepy and claimed a permanentspot in the colonywhere he dozed alongsidehis 32 new penguin friends.At first, he wriggled a lot during feeding

times, but became more comfortable as thedays went by. After three weeks, he surpri-sed everyone at the NZG by coming rightup to the bucket and taking his first fish allon his own.“Nowhepusheshisway to thebucket and

is really starting to show his own specialpersonality.“We need to do everything in our power

to help save these incredible little birds,”said Francois Louw, of Sanccob.Beakie will be flown back to Sanccob and

released at Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town.

The policy identifies the followingmain categories for awards:

V The Mayor’s Medal which acknowl-edges outstanding contributions that aremade voluntarily by individuals or asso-ciations in various fields, such as com-munity affairs; social affairs and servic-

es; cultural affairs; youth affairs; recrea-tion and sport; conservation; economicaffairs; and extraordinary bravery.

V Freedom of the City is an award givento individuals, military units or organi-sations which have distinguished them-selves through heroic service.

The odds of finding someone who hasdedicated 20 years of his/her life tovoluntary service is slim, so it is in-

deeda long shot to findahusbandandawifewho have done this together.

Gary (54) and Shirley Müller (51) of Both-asig have been serving as volunteers for theCity of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Manage-ment Centre since the nineties.

They have seen riots, blazing fires, fatalaccidents, gunshot and stab wounds, andpeople in desperate need.

Alternatively, they have also witnessedtears of joy, rejuvenation, reconciliationand hugs that seem to last forever.

Making a difference for no compensationis probably the most noble thing one can doin a society that has been consumed by iso-lation and self-interest.

ServiceThey received a pat on the back by the

City in December last year at the first annu-al Disaster Risk Management VolunteerAwards – along with 104 other volunteers.

The volunteers’ “outstanding dedicationto duty”, equates to 985 years of voluntaryservice to safeguard Cape Town.

About 45 of those years were contributedby the Müller-family, who are currentlybased in the Milnerton unit.

Says Gary: “I started in May 1990 andShirley started one year after me. Thosedays it was Civil Defence and then changedto Civil Protection.

“It started when we took our son to anopen day at Milnerton fire station. Therewas a stall that elaborated a bit on this vol-unteer programme and I thought it was fas-cinating!”

Gary’s love for first-aid was the catalystfor his enlistment and since then he hasused this knowledge to save hundreds oflives.

Just this Saturday he started at 18:30 andonly signed off at 03:30. In this time they at-tended to a motor accident, a stabbing inci-dent of a youngster, a house robbery in Ta-bleViewanda suspectedheart attackatKil-larney racetrack.

Giving backIt often happens that injured or sick peo-

ple are taken to the fire station before theygo to the hospital, so one moment the volun-teers could be keeping themselves busy inthe operations room and then they aretasked with emergency CPR.

Gary says he spent more than 400 hourslast year doing voluntary work at the Mil-nerton unit. He also works for ER24, sothere is precious little “Gary-time”.

Shirley used to be more active in the careand comfort section of the unit, but thesedays she has become less involved due tothe demands of her day-time job at Trafal-gar Property Management.

When asked why people should considerbecoming volunteers she responds: “Themedical staff we have at the moment are soover-worked.

“People sit on their backsides and donothing! Why don’t they give somethingback to the community?”

Gary is also the chairperson of the localneighbourhood watch, part of the commu-nity policing forum and has previouslyhelped out at the victim support unit.

Stepping stone“Youngsters from as young as 16 can be-

come volunteers at the Milnerton unit,which keeps them off the streets. Over theyears there have also been many who usedthis as a stepping stone to become firefight-ers and paramedics,” he adds.

Gary and Shirley’s stories captivate oneand all, so in many ways they are compen-sated in experiences and a feeling of mak-ing a difference.

Sometimes they will just walk around insome mall then someone will come up tothem and thank them for saving someone’slife or delivering a baby.

die album self ge-skryf,” vertel Vaug-han. Die album isook self vervaardig.

set up for an exciting second round in the after-noon. Hanging to be kingRuben Lenten in action at Big Bay, Bloubergstrand where the Red Bull King of the Air extreme kiteboarding event will take place from 1 to 15 February.

Next month Bloubergstrand will playhost to one of the most extreme kite-boarding events in the world.

The Red Bull King of the Air competitionis all about height and hang time and in aweek fromnowkiters fromacross theworldwill be counting on our Cape Doctor to pro-vide just that.The event started in 1999 and was held in

Hawaii in 2005 for the last timewhereDutchkiteboarder Ruben Lenten took the hon-ours.“Since the inception of this event in 1999,

the jumps became bigger and bigger,” saysLenten who competed against sports legendRobby Naish in the final in Hawaii.It was a dream come true for the young

daredevil who is continuously trackingstorms around the world, in search of the

next biggest ride.

Push limitsSince 2005 the King of the Air event has

taken a break but this year it is back in fullforce. Lenton along with 23 other top riderswill push themselves to the limits in searchof maximum fly time.The event will take place at Big Bay be-

tween 1 and 15 February depending onweather conditions.During this event 16 of the world’s best

kiteboarders who were invited by the KingOf The Air committee and eight wildcardcompetitors (who were chosen based onfootage they sent in of their most extremetricks), will battle it out for honours.There is only one South African among

the invited kiters, Luke McGillewie.

Also included in the lineup are World no1 in 2012 Youri Zoon and local wildcard Os-wald Smith who goes into the competitionhaving just won SA Champships.The judging panel consists of female kite-

boarder SusiMai; editor of KiteworldMaga-zine and presenter of ‘The Kite Show’ JimGaunt; and South African original King ofthe Air alumnus Greg Tijsse. They will bewatching the water to gauge the height, sty-le and creativity of each contestant’smoves.Lenten has also been involved in organis-
