The community and church’s involvementin Kuils River is what is required to helpfight crime.

This is the comment of pastor MartinBurke, chairman of the sector 2 committeewhich include Sarepta and the crime riddenKalkfontein, following the recent release ofthe national crime statistics.

The statistics were released on Friday 19September.

According to the figures, murders in theKuils River police precinct have increasedthis past year.

In 2013 a total of 15murders were reportedin Kuils River. This number increased to 18in 2014.

Attempted murders also rose. This year atotal of 32were recorded in comparisonwithlast year’s 11 cases reported.

Sexual crimes, however, decreased. Thisyear 65 cases were reported compared to 79in 2013.

According to the statistics, assault withthe intent to inflict grievous bodily harm al-so decreased. In 2014 a total of 198 cases werereported. In 2013 this number was 236.

Burglary on the increaseBurglaries at residential premises, a com-

mon occurrence in the area, have increased.According to the statistics 1 051 cases werereported this year. In 2013 a total of 888 caseswere recorded.

Burke said the sector is concerned aboutthe increase in crime and they have been ac-tively taking steps to address some of theseissues.

“We are obviously very concerned aboutwhat is happening in our area but as sectorchairman I am trying to help by involvingall the church leaders in our attempt to tack-le crime.”

He said a prayerwalkwas held inKalkfon-tein a week ago and it was well attended bycommunitymembers.Anotherwalk is beingplanned for Saturday.

The aim of thewalk is to encourage people

to refrain from a life of crime, but also to en-courage residents and churches to help fightthe evil.

Burke also tries to intervene in the livesof young children by helping them under-stand the dangers of crime.

“We show them the consequences ofcrime. We take them to holding cells, we getlegal experts in and social workerswho thensharewith them the details and consequenc-es of crime.

“From my personal view, if I look at na-tional level, I think the early drop-outs fromschool is also contributing to the high crimelevels.

“I think the department of educationshould do something,” he said.

Gang conflictsReferring to the latest sets of results, Kuils

River station commander Colonel DysinJacobs said during the past year Kuils Rivi-er police have experienced an increase ingang related conflicts.

“Children as young as 15 years of age jointhe 26 or 28 gangster groups.

“Inmost instances,murder and attemptedmurder cases that were reported, the vic-tims and the perpetrators were linked tothese gangs,” Jacobs said.

He said sexual offences is not a policeablecrime as these crimes mostly occurred in-house where the perpetrators are known tothe victims.

“To reduce sexual offences in Kuils River,the police launched different programmesand projects to sensitise scholars,” he said.

They do this with the help of communitybased organisations and the broader com-munity.

The annual crime statistics were released this week. According to the results, murder andattempted murder have increased over the past year in Kuils River. Sexual crimes, however, havedecreased. Here two Kuils River police officers perform a roadblock operation earlier this year.

New gym benefits school pupilsA fully functional gym recently opened

its doors to help improve the lives ofthe pupils at JanKriel School in Kuils

River.The Brent’s Place Gym was officially

opened this month and boasts state-of-the-art equipment, including weights, rowingdevices and cycles.The gym was funded through various

sponsorships, including a donation by thefamily of Brent Pretorius, a student at JanKriel School which caters for learners withspecial educational needs.The Medihelp Medical Scheme’s annual

Bike and Tekkie Challenge held at theschool recently also contributed, spokesper-son Ryno Ellis said.School principal Marius Burger said the

gym means a great deal to every student atJan Kriel School.“The facility will not only help many of

the hyperactive learners to focus and con-centrate, but underactive learners who arewheelchair-bound will also have the oppor-tunity to get in shape,” Burger said proudly.He added that the gym will have physio-

therapists, a biokineticist and a trainer tohelp the learners achieve optimal results.Burger said the gymwill help the school’s

athletes to train and thus avoid injuries.He jokingly added that some of the teach-

ers at the school could also benefit from thegym.Heyn van Rooyen, principal officer ofMe-

The body of an unknown adultmalewasdiscovered in a bush near Blue Downson Monday morning, police said.

The man’s body was discovered by a pas-ser-by, said Captain NomathembaMuavha,spokesperson for the Mfuleni police.She said the police were informed of the

discovery at about 08.30.“Upon arrival, the police found the body

of a dead man. The ambulance confirmed itand certified that there were no physicalwounds visible on him,” Muavha said.Muavha said the man is approximately

30-years-old.

The man was wearing a blue pair of jeansand a red jersey underneath a black leatherjacket.“The police are investigating an inquest,”

Muavha said.The police asked people who might have

a missing family member who fits the de-scription to contact them.The police are also searching for themur-

derers of an adultmale inWesbankwhowasbrutally gunned down on Sunday night.The attack occurred in Fillmore Street

around 23:00, Ricardo le Roux, a communityleader, said.Le Roux said the victim is also a 30 year

old man, and a father.

He said theman,whose identity is still un-known, was gunned down near his house.A total of ten spent cartridges were discov-ered near the body.Le Roux said it is unclear whether the at-

tack was gang related. However, he said thevictim, a taxi-guard, did not belong to agang.Muahva confirmed the shooting.She said the man was found dead with a

bullet wound to his head. “The motive forthe shooting is not yet known,” she said.Police are investigating a murder case.

Unidentified body discovered in bush

A total of 304 suspects have been arrestedin the Kuils River police cluster over thepast week, police said.The cluster consists of the Kuils River,

Mfuleni and Kleinvlei police stations.Provincial spokesperson Colonel Tem-

binkosi Kinana said several houses weresearched for drugs and alcohol and severalarrestsmade as a result of these operations.Police said a total of 197 mandrax tablets

with an approximate street value of R5 000,tik with a street value of R5 000 and dagga

to the value of R5 000 were confiscated.Five illegal firearms and prohibited fire-

arms were also confiscated in Kuils River.A total of 239 suspects were arrested for

charges relating to murder, attemptedmur-der, assault common, assaultwith the inten-tion to cause grievous bodily harm, drunkdriving, reckless and negligent driving andthe possession of a dangerous weapon.Some suspectswere also arrested in connec-tion with malicious damage to property,house breaking and theft, possession of an

illegal firearm, dealing in liquor without alicence, theft of motor vehicle, intimidationand drugs, house robbery, child neglect,rape and sexual assault.He said 65 other were arrested for less se-

rious crimes such as being drunk in public,and riotous behaviour. These individualswere released and given a fine.Kuils River cluster commanderBrigadier

Roadworks along the StellenboschArterial and Van Riebeeck Roadnear Saxenburg Park are having a

detrimental effect on some businesses.Some business-owners TygerBurger

spoke to said they are forced to adjusttheir routes, business hours and staffshifts to keep head above water.

Construction on the Stellenbosch Arte-rial (M12) and Van Riebeeck (R102) havebeen ongoing for a year. Earlier this yearTygerBurger reported the deadline for thenearly R140 million project is January2015. But it was confirmed this week thatthe new date for completion is April 2015– three months later.

The construction includes the generalupgrade of the M12, the construction of anew dual carriageway and rehabilitationof the existing dual and single carriage-ways.

Business and taxi-owner Abdul Sieb-ritz, said since work began he had to re-route his taxis in order to ensure childrenarrive at school on time.

Traffic stand-stillHe said taxi-drivers now use alternative

routes from Silversands to get to three dif-ferent schools in Kuils River.

“The traffic stands still in the morningand the children arrive late at school,”Siebrits, owner of Siebritz Transport inSilversands, said.

He said as a result parents often com-plain.

“The roadworks have forced our driv-ers to use Nooiensfontein via Highbury.The drivers also have to leave much earli-er in the morning – 05:45,” Siebritz ex-plained.

He said children often get marked forbeing late. “The schools then inform theparents that they arrived late due to thetransport, and not the congestion,” Sieb-ritz said.

Cutting employee hoursAnother business-owner said he is con-

sidering cutting his em-ployees’ work-hours tosurvive; something hedoes not want to do.

Gareth Pool, owner ofthe Engen Service Sta-tion situated along VanRiebeeck Road near theZevenwacht Mall, saidhe employs 30 people.

He said he might haveto put some of them onshort-time. “It’s something I do not wantto do,” Pool said.

He said the roadworks have a severe ef-fect on his business. “For the last fourmonths the slipway to our main entrancehave been closed due to the construction.We are basically running at a loss.”

Only one entrance is open.“Also, when you turn into the garage it

takes a while to get back out. Buying fuelis already such a drudge, you do not wantto waste it standing still in traffic,” he add-ed.

Losing customersHe has been losing close to 5 000 custom-

ers monthly and said that his fuel salesare down by an estimated 120 000 litres amonth.

“I would like it if they can re-open themain entrance. I want them to finish be-cause this is a nightmare.”

Pool said he has spoken to some of theengineers on site.

“One of them said the construction atthe entrance would last two months, butthey are in month four already.”

He said the contractors and engineershave failed to keep them informed aboutthe construction progress. “They can atleast send us an email or newsletters,we’re left in the dark.”

The project is run bythe provincial depart-ment of transport andpublic works and thecontractor is Martin &East. The engineers areRoyal HaskoningDHV.

Transport departmentspokesperson Al-AmeenKafaar said the depart-ment is aware of the in-convenience and com-

plaints by some road users.

Complaints“The department did receive com-

plaints from the public,” Kafaar said.He said the anticipated completion date

for the project is April 2015 but there couldbe delays, particularly due to the weather.

Such delays will have an impact on thecompletion date, Kafaar said.

He said the department has instructedone of the engineering firms working onthe project to coordinate communicationwith the public to ensure relevant infor-mation is distributed.

Royal HaskoningDHV was approachedfor comment two weeks ago. By the timeof going to print they still had not respond-ed.

Ian Britten, a spokesperson of RoyalHaskoningDHV, toldTygerBurger earlierthis year that Martin & East started roadworks on 17 October 2013 and that the con-struction would last 15 months.

Strike actions and land invasions in theMfuleni policing precinct often ham-per the police’s operational capabili-

ty, station management said last week.Station commander Colonel LuyandaDa-

moyi says they are becoming more con-cerned about these occurrances.He said strike action, often coupled with

violence and invasion of private and mu-nicipal property, prevent police from doingoperational work and patrols elsewhere.“In the past few months we have noticed

there has been an increase in strikes andland invasions, accompanied by violenceand the vandalising of property.“We are concerned about this. We want

to say to the community that as much asthey have the right to express themselves,they need to do so in a civilisedmanner andnot use violence.

“They must respect the rights of otherpeople,” Damoyi said.Referring to a recent strike in Mfuleni

where two busses were damaged and twotrucks torched, Damoyi said he was con-cerned police resources were being takenaway from their main focus.“When you deal with a strike, you redi-

rect your resources who are suppose to bedoing the normal day-to-day policing. It(strikes) is a resource hungry activity. Youare forced to shift your responsibility to en-sure no one gets injured.”At a strike on Wednesday 3 September,

A month long city-wide campaign toraise awareness about blocked sewersis underway, the city’s department of

water and sanitation said last week.Some of the areas in subcouncil 21 ear-

marked for the campaign include Kleinvlei,Melton Rose and Forest Glade in Eerste Riv-er. The campaign will begin on 1 October inthe area, a city official said.“Appointed field-workers will be going

door-door in the area,” Ambrose Schoeman,water pollution control officer, told council-lors at a subcouncil meeting last week.He said campaign aimed to educate people

on what not to put down their drains, andproper grease disposal. The campaign willalso go to Hout Bay,Mitchells Plain,Milner-ton and Langa.During Schoeman’s presentation on the

causes of blocked sewers and the subsequentconsequences thereof, he indicated that sew-er blockages are a threat to public health andthe preservation of limited natural resourc-es.

Increase awarenessHe said an improved understanding of

sewerage infrastructure and how they affectpeoplemay improve sewerage use practices,and perhaps reduce maintenance costs.The water pollution control section, he

stated, has determined that increasingawareness may minimise sewer blockages.“We will target households,” Schoeman

said on Wednesday morning.Causes of sewer blockages include solid

materials and fats, oil or grease in the sys-tem; vandalism; unwanted objects throwninto the pipes; builders rubble; structuraldefects; as well as root and sand infiltration.Consequences of blockages include water-

borne or airborne diseases and sometimesdeath; the loss of aquatic life such as fish and

wasteful expenditure in unblocking the line.Schoeman said the city spent R311million

in 2012/2013 clearing blocked sewers.Wilma Brady, DA ward-councillor, wel-

comed the awareness campaign, but said theproblem inKleinvlei is the lackof sidewalks.“Whydowenot build sidewalks that could

prevent sand from entering the sewer sys-tem. I am not saying nothing is being done,but why do we not spend themoney wisely,”Brady said.In response, Schoeman said the amount of

R311 million was solely for unblocking sew-ages, and not the planned campaign.

Serial culpritsMajidie Abrahams, ANC PR-councillor,

wanted to know how prevention of blockag-es was being monitored.“Besides knocking on doors and the cam-

paigning? The biggest problem is your bigcompanies. Those are the oneswho get away– the way they take short-cuts to dispose oftheir waste.”He said the serial culprits are restaurants

in built-up areas.Abrahams wanted to know how big com-

panies are being “tackled”.“They are the culprits because of the way

they dispose of their fat. Residents and bigrestaurants are two different things,” headded.Schoeman agreed that some companies

took short-cuts when it came to disposing oftheir waste, saving transport costs by dis-posing of their waste illegally.“This campaign is targeted at residents,

but we also have inspectors who inspect andvisit restaurants to see if they have greasetraps.“We are tackling that aspect,” Schoeman

explained.A total of 1 106 incidents of blocked sewers

have been reported in the Eerste River andKuils River area since the beginning of theyear.

An organisation concerned with the he-alth of babies recently reminded mo-thers-to-be not to consume alcohol du-ring pregnancy.Refraining from alcohol prevents Foe-

tal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), was themessage conveyed by community orga-nisation, Early Years Services (EYS).Their awareness message was part of

International Foetal Alcohol SyndromeDay celebrated on Tuesday 9 September.EYS, a non profit organisation, con-

ducts Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disor-der (FASD) training across the Peninsu-la. The training includes communityawareness, prevention, and interventi-on.In celebration of Foetal Alcohol Syn-

drome Day the group took to the streetsof Athlone where they were joined byconcerned motorists at the corner ofKlipfontein Road and Vanguard Drive.Drivers hooted to spread the awarenessmessage, director Avril Cupido said.“Women who are sexually active and

not using effective contraception mightget pregnant and expose their baby to al-cohol before they realize they are preg-nant.“More than half of pregnancies in

South Africa are unplanned,” she said.Avril saidFAS is completely preventa-

ble.“Despite myths, there is no scientific

evidence available setting a “safe”amount of alcohol that will not affect thedeveloping foetus.“Alcohol in the mother’s blood passes

to the baby through the placenta and theumbilical cord. When a woman drinksalcohol, so does her baby.“There is also no safe time to drink du-

ring pregnancy, including before a wo-man knows she is pregnant,” Avril said.FAS can impact children’s physical,

mental, behavioural and cognitive deve-lopment, she said.“To prevent the disorder, a woman

should not drink alcohol while she ispregnant or if she suspects she is preg-nant. A woman often does not know thatshe is pregnant for up to four to sixweeks after conception.“If a woman is drinking alcohol du-

ring pregnancy, it is never too late tostop. This is because the brain growth ta-kes place throughout pregnancy. Thesooner a woman stops drinking, the sa-fer it will be for her and her baby,” Avrilconcluded.

Daar is seker nie ’n klavier in Brackenfellwat nog nie onder die kundige hande vandie klavierstemmer, Lukas van der Walt,deurgeloop het nie.

Lukas, ’n klavierstemmer van formaat,het sy onderneming in 1979 op die dorp ge-stig en is vandag nog net so gewild soostoentertyd. As veteraan-sakeman en eie-naar van een van die oudste ondernemingsin Brackenfell, is hy verlede week vereerby ’n ontbyt van die AHI Tygerberg se Oos-tenberg-sakekamer.

Die geleentheid het Woensdagoggend bydie Kuilsrivier-gholfklub plaasgevind.

In ’n toespraak het Marian Nieuwoudt,wykraadslid, vir Lukas beskryf as die tipesakeman wat deel is van die tradisionelesakekultuur wat eie aan dié dorp is.

Sy beskryf die kultuur as volg: “Diemen-se in Brackenfell is lojaal aan mekaar ensien om namekaar. Toe ek baie jare geledein Brackenfell ingetrek het, het ek die vol-gende dag ’n koekie seep ontvang van dieplaaslike apteek met ’n briefie aan om myspesiaal welkom te heet in die dorp – ietswat dié spesifieke apteek tot vandag toenog doen,” vertel sy.

“As sakeman kan Lukasmet trots sy sto-rie aan die vlagpaal hang. Sy sukses as sa-keman spreek van deursettingsvermoë,ongelooflike selfdissipline en ’n ysterwil,”het sy gesê en hom bedank vir die voor-beeld van integriteit wat hy oor die jareaan die sakegemeenskap gestel het.

Lukas vertel dat hy die dorp saam metsy onderneming sien groei het. Hy het eersvanuit sy huis gewerk en vandaar getrekna die enigste ou gewelgebou in die dorp,die een langs die NG Moedergemeente.

Vandag is sywinkel, Lukas vanderWalt-klavierstemmers, of Lukas Klaviere, soosalmal hom ken, in Jeanettestraat geleë.

Waar hy destyds slegs klaviere vir skolein dieKaap gestem, verhuur en herstel het,verkoop hy vandag klaviere.

“In die laat 70’s was Brackenfell-boule-vardnog ’n skoolpad enFransConradie-ry-laan het nog nie bestaan nie. Die hiper-mark was nog nie gebou nie en daar wasbitter min ondernemings op die dorp metnet eendestydseMobil-vulstasie, vertel hy.

“Ekhet destyds die kontrakbydie onder-wysdepartement gekry om skoolklavierete stem en al my sake was afkomstig vanKaapstad. Vandag kry ek sowat 15% vanmy sake uit Brackenfell,” sê hy.

As ’n blinde persoon het Lukas besluitom ’n klavierstemmer te word – ’n beroepwat op daardie tydstip baie gewild was on-der blinde persone. “As ek kon sien, sou ekseker ’n ingenieur geword het,” skerts hy.

Hy skryf sy sukses toe aan gehaltewerken betroubaarheid en dat hy nog nooit sytelefoonnommer verander het nie.

“Brackenfell is ’n spoggerige dorp en ekis baie trots op ons gemeenskap. Dis ’n loja-le gemeenskap wat die ondernemings inhul eie dorp ondersteun, wat ons plaaslikeekonomie in staat stel om te groei,” sê hy.

V Wrappaint rollers and brushes in a plasticbag between coats to keep them full of paintand prevent them from drying out.

V Don’t try to work with electrical or plum-bing projects you are not confident about. It

V Whendrilling though ceramic tile or natu-ral stone, place masking tape on the surface.This makes marking the tile easier and helpsthe drill bit stay in one place.

Domestic workers’efforts recognised

Domestic workers are the unsung hero-ines in most South African homes.They are the housekeepers, take care

of basic maintenance, cook, take care of chil-dren, some do the gardening – they generallyplay an integral part in ensuring everythingin the home runs smoothly.

Hirsch’s, who hold regular training ses-sions on appliance maintenance in each oftheir branches for domestic workers, wouldlike to acknowledge these stalwarts in thehome by holding a “Domestic Worker of themonth” competition.TygerBurger came on board as the compe-

tition’s media sponsor.The monthly winners will receive a Hir-

Ithemba Foundation was established byauthor and journalist Prof Lizette Rabe in2012 after the tragic death of one of her sonsas a result of depression.

Rabe, who is a mental health advocate,said the staggering economic cost of depres-sion can be calculated, but not the indescri-bable suffering caused by depression and re-lated mental illnesses.

She says because society still stigmatisesmental disease, instead of acknowledging itas biological, suffering not only continues,but escalates.

“It is important to understand being de-

pressed is not about just ‘feeling down’ andit will not disappear by ‘just pulling yourselftogether’. It is a medical condition with bio-logical causes, and as with other illnesses,it requires medical treatment,” Rabe says.
