Wi-Fi, wills, then jobs. This is what is hoped will be the
spin-off of a new initiative in Delft– that gives newmeaning to “calling the sub-urb home”.Historically the call centre industry in
Cape Town has its feet firmly planted in thecity centre and surrounding major businessdistricts. But recent economic developments have
brought the call centre clique into Delft too– the suburb now boasts its first fully opera-tional call centre, right in the heart of thearea. All because of a huge Wi-Fi project.Pastor Charles George, chairman of non-
profit organisation Home of Compassion(HoC) in Delft, explains his excitement afterHoC partnered with a big name in business.“This community has been instrumental
in launching aWi-Fi pilot project in Octoberlast year.“Currently the entire community has free
internet access via this platform, arguablymaking Delft the largest Wi-Fi hot spot inSouth Africa.”What happened next was a natural step up
for the community, when locally based com-mercial business, Ecom Investment Hold-ings (a registered financial services provid-er), partneredwithHoC to bring the call cen-tre to Delft.
Training“Thus far, this initiative has enabled
training opportunities, offering local resi-dents permanent full-time work placementswithin the call centre market in CapeTown,” George said.“Essentially, this initiative has created
the opportunity to reverse the historicnorms in communities such as Delft, as wellas those of surrounding communities.“We are therefore hopeful that this initia-
tive will form the basis of further opportuni-ties for job creation, training, call centresourcing and technological infrastructuredevelopment,” he says.According to recent reports from the
World Bank internet access is essential topromote economic growthanddevelopment, particularly in developing economies suchas SA.“This exciting collaboration withMyWill
Online is evidence of the fact that businessand community organisations can indeedpartner together in a meaningful and sus-tainablemanner to serve our communities.”
WillMy Will Online offers clients an opportu-
nity to create, print and maintain their willand testament online.According to the owner and managing di-
rector of My Will Online, Wayne-Allen Jo-seph, there are many reasons why peoplewould want to draft a will.“The main purpose of having a will is es-
sentially to ensure that your... wishes anddesires are executed at the time of yourdeath. In essence, it becomes your voice, when you can no longer speak,” he says.“I am tremendously excited about our
partnership with HoC in this initiative andour objective is very clear.“We aim to ensure that as many clients as
is possible obtain a will and testament in asimple, affordable and reliable manner in-cluding the ability to store yourwill online,”said Joseph.V For more information on My Will Online contact 021100 3532 or email [email protected], alsocheck website www.mywillonline.co.za.

Criminals have found a new way to robpeople. In Ravensmead, police have expe-rienced an increase in cases of theft usingthis method and believe it may spread toother areas. They are investigating cases where a
white Lewis furniture truck and a whiteBMWstops in front of ahouse and informsthe resident they must deliver furniture. When told no furniture was bought,
they leave only to return minutes later tosay that they are experiencing problemswith their vehicle and need assistance. When the resident goes out to assist
them, they later return to the home youfind there are items missing, particularlyTVs, radios and other electrical applian-ces.Policewant the public to bewarned that
if anyone comes to your door and tells you
they are from a certain company, pleaseverify the information first.Don’t open your door until you are sure
the delivery is for you and don’t leave yo-ur premises when someone asks for yourassistance unless you know the person, and always keep your doors locked. If you feel uncomfortable about a situa-

Want to play a part in curbing unemploy-ment? Then get working with an innovativeskills and employment project.
The YoungPeople@Work organisationsupports jobless youngsters through com-puter and life skills training, job shado-wing, referrals and networking.
They run various projects at a computertraining and life skills academy, offer freeonline job search training from communitylibraries, empowerment workshops andcommunity information sessions.
YoungPeople@Work also offer a “CVbank” and an SMS alert service notifyingclients of potential job opportunities.
“We also assist youth with their CVs freeof charge and continuously provide oppor-tunities to gain work experience,” saysFrank Julie, founder of the project.
But they need some help from willing or-ganisations.
“One of our main challenges is to find sui-table partners who are prepared to host ourstudents – who require work experiencethrough job shadowing.
“Job shadowing is voluntary and no pay-ment is required from the host organisati-on,” he says.
“Participants are responsible for theirown travelling expenses.
“We call upon your organisation to part-ner with us in hosting unemployed youth. The period is at the discretion of your orga-nisation and can be negotiated with us.”V For more information call Frank Julie on 021 9115444 or 078 812 4603, email frankju[email protected] or visit their webiste www.nonprofitconsultant.org.za.

If you’ve ever wanted to party with thestars then make a date to be at the JackMuller/Danie Uys Park in Boston, Bell-
ville, on Saturday night and be prepared tomeet some real stars.
With April being Global AstronomyMonth, an informal but planet-wide cele-bration is being put together by Astrono-mers Without Borders, also close to home.
Ricardo Adams is the founder of King-dom Skies, an astro adventure and educa-tional service provider that runs a mobileplanetarium and stargazing programmes.
He will be joining in the world’s largestannual Global Star Party that brings to-gether astronomy enthusiasts and organi-sations worldwide, to share the passion forthe night sky with everyone. The motto?“One people, one sky.”
Ricardo says this event is the chance forpeople to get up close and personal with thecosmos while having a picnic underneaththe starry skies.
“We operate throughout the WesternCape, focusing on science resources toschools, science fairs and youth groups.
“This is the world’s largest event dedicat-ed to sharing the wonders of the universefor space geeks throughout April,” he says.
“April brings a new round of interestingobjects into view in the heavens. Come andexperience our spectacular night sky, where we will entertain you with interac-tive presentations.”
Ricardo points out that his interest in as-tronomy started when he was growing upon the streets of Ravensmead.
“Hanging out on street corners at nightwe were always wondering about the starsand their patterns, wondering why wecould only see the Three Sisters ( a star for-mation) in summer and not in winter.
“And the interest just grew from there.”Ricardo eventually worked for the South
African Museum as a marine technician, but when the museums amalgamated intoIziko Museum, he was promoted to theplanetarium as presenter and technician.
“My career and passion as a planetarianeducator has inspired me to fulfill mydreams to take the planetarium to un-reached (and reached) communities andschools,” he continued.
“Our educational presentations areCAPS friendly and give the learners an op-portunity to ‘travel’ to the planets and be-come an astronaut for a day.
“As most of us are familiar with the ‘sixkingdoms of life’, we explore the ‘kingdomof (the) skies’. A world unknown to most ofus – we want to invite you to come and expe-rience its wonders!”
Ricardo was also instrumental in thelaunching of their mobile digital planetari-um, the KingDOME, during October 2013.It has been successfully in orbit for morethan a year now.
“Promoting this event ties in with ourmission to create a space that will stimulatean interest in science and Technology,” headds. “Astronomy is the most approacha-ble of all sciences. Everybody can be a back-yard stargazer. Astronomers Without Bor-ders is the perfect platform for such out-reaches.”
Kingdom Skies and Elf Astronomy willtake you on a voyage through our belovedsouthern sky. Telescope viewing includesan overview of constellations and planetsvisible in our current night sky led by pro-fessional sky guides.
Activities start at the park on the cornerof Frans Conradie Drive and Carl CronjeDrive from 17:00. Bring along sundownerpicnic baskets, blankets, gazebos, chairs, telescopes, binoculars (optional), lanterns, head lamps and warm clothes.

“He had a group in those days where allthe children got their start in themusic busi-ness.” Sandra, now Miller, was excitedabout the initiative and said her son hadbeen nagging her to get something started.“He understood the legacy of the familyand always said we must start something topreserve that legacy because some of thefamily have already passed on. With thisproject we want to show the children thathard work will get you success in life andmusic.”Michael-John also pointed out they havesome challenges and are looking for busi-nesses to partnerwith them in this new initi-ative..“We’re working very hard to raisesome money but we need people to come onboard and help us.”V For more information about the project MichaelJohn can be contacted on 083 669 7623.

Thousands of runners will gather at upto forty destinations on six continentsto take part in the second Wings for Life
World Run on 3 May, with Cape Town oneof the destinations.
The run starts at exactly the same timeacross the world, with a catcher car settingoff thirty minutes after the start at each loca-tion, with the aim being to outrun the cat-cher car.
As long as you stay in front of the catchercar, you’re still in the race. The minute thecatcher car passes you, however, your raceis over. This continues until a single manand woman are left running. Whoever orwherever they are, they will be crownedchampions of the Wings for Life World Run.
The Wings for Life World Run is not allfun and games though. It’s a fund-raising
event hosted by international not-for-profit,Wings for Life, which funds scientific rese-arch and clinical trials around the globe inthe hope of finding a cure for spinal cord in-juries.
The run is for men and women, young andold, first-time runners, running fanatics andprofessional athletes. There is nothing stop-ping anyone, no matter their fitness level orability, to stand at the starting line on 3 May.
The entry fee for the South African leg ofthe run is R250, with every cent finding itsway to research funding. The Wings for LifeFoundation also allocates 100% of all otherproceeds to finding a cure for spinal cord in-juries.
The last person standing will not only winbragging rights and a trophy, but also a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world.
Run goes around the worldEntries for the fifth annual Jive Slave RouteChallenge (JSRC) on Sunday 10 May are nowopen.
This unique road running event is full ofhistory and heritage as the route takes youon a journey back into time, catering for theseasoned athlete, novices and walkers.
There are four events: 21.1km half mara-thon, 10km run, 10km big walk and 5km funrun/walk.
The “starter gun” will be the miniaturecannon at the Castle of Good Hope and therace goes from the City Hal through DistrictSix, Gardens, Company Gardens, WaleStreet, Bo-Kaap, Sea Point, Green Point Ur-ban Park, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town CBDand back to the finish on the Grand Parade.
Jive Slave Route Challenge spokesperson,Fatima Allie said more than 8 500 partici-
pants from across the country are expectedat this year’s event.
She says the race beneficiary this year isthe District Six Museum.
Mohamed Kajee, president of the Lion ofAfrica Insurance Itheko Sport AC who orga-nise the event, says it is a run down memorylane as the route takes you through CapeTown heritage sites.
“We honour, pay tribute and celebrate theaccomplishments and rich heritage of slavesand exiles, despite the challenges theyfaced,” says Kajee.
“We strive to make this the best race thereis.”
Those interested can enter online until 2May at www.topevents. co.za until, or in-store at all Sportsmans Warehouse stores inand around Cape Town until 26 April.

Belharwas in ’nverwoestendebui teendie
