The look on the faces of learners experienc-ing new sports was pure joy. For 50 hourslearners had to keep the ball rolling duringthe Sporting ChanceHealth of theNation 50-Hour Sports Challenge now in it’s seventhyear. This took place at the Western CapeSport School in Kuils River. The 50-hour sports challenge originated

following the groundbreaking health of thenation study, which revealed the huge prev-alence of obesity in South African children. It is aimed at encouraging children to takean interest in physical activity by keepinga ball moving for 50 hours. The challenge which ran Friday 15 Febru-

ary to Sunday 17 February exposed learnersto 15 different sports such as cricket, tennis, hockey, rounders, badminton, soccer, ropeskipping, athletics, touch rugby and manymore. This challenge provided learners the op-

portunity to try many sporting disciplinesthey have never been exposed to due to thelack of facilitieswithin their school environ-ment. Learners from Elsie’s River wereamong the 5 000 learners who participatednationwide.Monray Solomons, a learner from

Elswood High School in Elsies River, saysthathe learnt about anewsportheneverhadan interest in. “Sport keeps you fit and thisexperience helped me to get out of my com-fort zone,” he says.Brad Bing, MD of Sporting Chance, de-

scribes the importance of exposing learnersto new sports.“Everyone has potential. Howwill you ev-

er know what you can do if you are not ex-posed to it?”Sporting Chance, in association with Kel-

logg’s also hosted pre-challenge road showsin Elsies River that addressed specific socialconcerns within the community, includinghow to lead an active life, prevent obesity, principles of personal hygiene and nutri-tional guidance facilitatedbyKellogg’s dieti-tians.

Bing says the fitness of an entire genera-tion of SouthAfrican childrenhas been com-promised since physical education was sig-nificantly downscaled in the national schoolcurriculum in 1999.It will take another seven years before the

reintroduced physical education pro-grammes become fully functional.“Research has shown that children devel-

op healthy habits by the age of 12.“If you’re not playing sport or leading an

active and healthy lifestyle by then, thechances are that sport and physical activitywill not really feature in your adult life,” hesays.

Thequality of teachingand learning for vis-ually impaired learners at a Bellville Southschool last week improved significantly, through a donation of three hi-tech devices.Ten portable Braille computers (the

BrailleNote Apex), a device for scanningand reading printed text and a portableMP3 player designed for blind users, weredonated to theAthlone School for theBlind.More thanR1millionwas invested by the

Western Cape Education Department

(WCED), in this new technology, that wasalso donated to the Pioneer School inWorcester.Learners from the Athlone School hail

from all over the peninsula. This donation follows a recent study by

theDirectorate: SpecialisedEducationSup-port in the WCED that looked at ways inwhich the department could best supportblind learners by different technologies. The device allows learners to type text in

braille and to listen to the text via compu-ter-generated speech.Learners can read and listen to electronic

text in various formats, including PDF andWord files. Two devices that can scan and read text

to learners via built-in speakers, the Eye-Pal Solo, were also provided. The devices also allow learners to browse

the internet via wi-fi and connect to otherdevices through bluetooth.Gerhard Erasmus of Edit Microsystems,

who too is visually impaired, said one of thebenefits is the conversion of electronic andhard copies to Braille.Donald Grant, Minister of Education in

the Western Cape, said this project is thefirst of its kind in Africa. “We are the sec-ond country in the world after the UK tohave this technology for our children,” hesaid.“This is going to change theway teachers

and learners interact and will change theway learners act with the outside world,”he said.He said these devices will make it possi-

ble for learners to listen to a document andsubsequently save a lot of time in the class-room.

Singh sê: “Ons is baie opgewonde oordie nuwe radiostasie in Kaapstad.

Volgens skry-wer, Rian Malan, is Klipwerfsteeds net so gewild as voor-heen. As rede voer hy aan datdie orkes se vastrap-boeremu-siek so uniek Afrikaans is.

Boys say they got right 4Mula

The 4Mula will be launching at Jamrock soon.

LOUISA STEYL

Hard-working and determined, The 4Mula arepreparing to launch their fresh new sound.

“The 4Mula is an original group and we startedfive months ago,” explains Esrick Nelson, thegroup’s vocalist.

Esrick is joined in the band by bassplayer, Craig Potgieter, keyboardistRuchen Christians and Vinny Ortell, the DJ on synthensizers.

“We are artists with different mu-sic backgrounds who have combinedto form an afro-pop group,” Esrickcontinues.

Vinny explains that the group members allcome from different music genres, and decidedto combine the genres to create their own sound.

Ruchen explains that they’ve all known eachother for some time. He and Esrick were togetherin a band before and had been thinking of start-ing something new.

Esrick explains that the wheels were set in mo-tion when their previous band recorded a singlewith Vinny.

“We didn’t want a normal band sound,” hesays. That’s also why the group chose their name.

Ruchen explains that the name is open; allow-ing them to experiment with sounds instead ofpigeon-holing themselves.

Having worked in other bands before, thegroup want to cover the business sideof the group first.

As a result, they have already re-corded an album, with their musicsent out to local radio stations andother marketing strategies in play. They also have two music videos onthe way.

The 4Mula will officially launch at JamrockTheatre on Thursday 28 February. Tickets costR80. To book, email [email protected], thesame address can be used to book the band forperformances.

For more information about The 4Mula, visittheir Facebook or follow them on twitter [email protected] The 4Mula visited the Orange Couch with a taste of whatto expect at their launch. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za towatch the video.

The final round of the Metropolitan u-19Premier Cup play-offs culminated inthe round robin stage held at Rock-

lands High School this past weekend. The fi-nal round consisted of 28 teams fighting fora spot in the coveted top 14, and a place inthe prestigious tournament to be held overthe Easter weekend. In the final play-off round, there wereteamswhohadprogressed through the earli-er play-off rounds, facing teams that had pre-viously participated in the tournament. The groups were certainly not easy andthis resulted in a few surprises and somedrama as the weekend unfolded.

ActionFirst time qualifiers included RC Athleti-co, Evertonians, Bothasig,Masidlale andAt-lantis Leeds. Both Cape Town All Stars andAtlantisLeedshad to rely onapenalty shoot-out in order to progress.CTAll Stars overcameTwoOceansAcade-my, while Atlantis Leeds held their nerveagainstGlendene.MilanoUnited andBelharSpurs played to a rather lacklustre 0-0 draw

in their round robin match.Milano got off to a good start as theymoved the ball around the parkwith author-ity, but were unable to capitalise on an easychance off a corner kick in the first half.Belhar Spurs firmed up their defence andstarted dominating in the midfield. Milanocame close from a free-kick just outside thebox, forcing the Belhar keeper to punch theball over the crossbar.

QualifiersMost of the actionwas confined to themid-field however, as the sides battled for posses-sion. Milano missed an easy chance in thelast minute, hitting the upright. The pace slowed considerably in the sec-ondhalf as both sides struggled to retainpos-session for any length of timeAlthough there were flashes of good play, both teams will have to improve drasticallyif they are to stand any chance of progress-ing further in the competition. The 14 qualifying teams are: RCAthletico,Hanover Park, Old Mutual Academy, Ever-tonians, Milano, Belhar Spurs, Bothasig FC,Vasco Da Gama, Morgenster, ASD, BlueDown Spurs, and Masidlale.
