Following a recent article (“Quarry aworry for residents”, TygerBurger, 19March) regarding the level of air and

noise pollution in Penhill Estate and resul-tant residents’ unhappiness, Lafarge SouthAfrica, who operates a nearby quarry, res-ponded by saying it adheres to strict stan-dards.

Residents in the quiet and picturesquearea recently complained about dustsweeping over the area on windy days. Theyalso complained about the noise caused bytrucks and crushers, operating until late atnight sometimes.

Some residents say they cannot open theirwindows as a result of the dust.

The on-going issue has led to severalmeetings. Residents, however, claim theproblem has not been addressed.

Resident Minette de Villiers said in an in-terview recently her children are often sickdue to the amount of dust.

Ongoing issue“I have to give them antibiotics because

of the dust.”Minette stays relatively close to the area

where blasting at the quarry takes place.“I do not open my windows at all. I can’t

do my washing. When we walk, the floor isfull of dust. It’s like walking outside,” shesaid.

She said she has resorted to taking sleep-ing pills in order to sleep at night.

Bert van Dalen, ward councillor, said inan interview recently the issue has been on-

going for some years now despite severalmeetings.

In their response to questions posed byTygerBurger, Bridget von Holdt, spokesper-son for Lafarge SA said: “Residents of Pen-hill Estate in the vicinity of Lafarge SouthAfrica’s Peak Quarry in Cape Town have ex-pressed concerns regarding noise and dustfrom the quarry.

“The company has assured the communi-ty that the quarry is operated to standardsthat are higher than local regulatory requi-rements. Peak Quarry has been in existencefor over fifty years and provides much nee-ded employment in the area.”

Von Holdt continued by saying PeakQuarry holds regular forums to enable resi-dents in nearby residential areas to voiceany concerns.

Complaints common“Feedback is given on the quarry’s moni-

toring of its activities and the measures ta-ken to suppress dust and minimise noise.Lafarge South Africa is well-known for itsresponsible attitude towards communitiesaround its operating sites,” von Holdt said.

Ayanda Shezi, spokesperson for the de-partment of mineral resources, said thesekinds of complaints were very commonwhere developers of residential areasencroach on mines established many yearsbefore the development started.

“The problem here is that the developeror sales agent who should be blamed is longgone with the money of the complainant.

“The residents of Penhill also establisheda community forum through which com-plaints should be directed to the manage-ment of the quarry,” Shezi said.

Quarry continuesto be a worry

30 year acting career. Louk-maan received his break at ni-ne-years-old when he landed apart in District Six The Musi-cal, Christine Skinner, spokes-person for play, said.It is a role youngCaleb, a gra-

de 4 learner at the Kuils RiverPrimary School, says he isequipped to do.Caleb was chosen out of 30

other young boys. For his parents, however,

the idea of a young actor in thehousehold is something fairlynew.“He has no background in

drama. He started singing athis pre-school function withhis graduation. They had a Michael Jack-son show and that is where everything star-ted,” his mother, Jeandre Rodgers, said re-cently.Since his graduation, she said, he has just

been singing in and around the house.“We saw the advert in anewspaper for the

Loukmaan audition. We took him for thefirst one and they called him back for thesecond audition.“They called back aweek after the second

rehearsal to say that he got the part.“Even now it has not sunk in yet, maybe

when he is on stage or perhaps at the ope-ning night it will,” Jeandre said. She said should Caleb decide to follow a

path in the actingworld, that the familywillsupport him 100%.Caleb explained that he too is still getting

used to the idea, but that he is ready andlooking forward to the production.“I am enjoying it. At the first rehearsal

I was very nervous, but for the second rehe-arsal I was ready. Now that I am through

and did the photo shoot I amvery happy,” he said.Caleb, one of 19 other cast

acting.”Before the rehearsals Caleb

did not knowLoukmaan. “I on-ly know his brother EmoAdams,” he said.Despite this, he is looking

forward to playing the role ofthe acclaimed performer.“He is a very nice and funny

guy,” Caleb said.Loukmaan said: “It feels like

I am coming a full circle, as Iwas given the opportunity to

perform at the Baxter when I was nine-years-old having auditioned forDistrict SixThe Musical, and now I’m delighted to begiving Caleb and Ryan (Jones) a similar op-portunity.”My Wonderyears runs from April 5 till

Apartheid legacy undone by educationMICHELLE LINNERT

@linnertmb

The legacy of apartheid is being turnedon its head through quality education.

This is according to a Kuils River fa-ther of two gifted daughters who are rea-ching great heights thanks to the scholar-ship programme run by the Kay MasonFoundation (KMF) across the Western Cape.

“The KMF creates opportunities for child-ren who under normal circumstances will

never be able to attend the better schools inthe Western Cape,” said Tyrone Africa, proud father of Jessi and Lisa.

“The resources made available by donorswill contribute to levelling the playing fieldsfor the disadvantaged youth of our country. This is a process of overturning the legacyof apartheid,” he said.

Tyrone’s girls, both of whose high schoolcareers at Rhenish High in Stellenbosch are, andwere, funded through theKMF’s donors-hip programme, are showing the results of

the investment made in their young lives.Noëline de Goede, CEO of the KMF, said it

was important that someone like Jessi, cur-rently inGrade 11, received thebest academicsupport available.

“The foundation funds scholars who can-not afford aquality education themselves andwho have the potential to become great lea-ders of the future and who have academic po-tential,” said Noëline.

“Jessi is an exceptional scholar who is tru-ly a well rounded individual. She works ex-

tremely hard and excels academically, cul-turally and in sport.

“She always achieves top marks and sheportrays excellent leadership qualities,”she said.

Among Jessi’s 2013 achievements are:highest achievement in dramatic arts, ma-thematics, accounting, life orientation,Afrikaans first additional language, hig-hest achievement in grade 10 overall. Jessialso holds a number of prestigious culturalawards.

Top schoolsNoëline said KMF scholars are placed in

a top schools such as South PeninsulaHigh, Sea Point High, Norman Henshil-wood, Plumstead High, Spine Road High,Mondale High, Camps Bay High, Rhenish,Westerford High, the Cape Academy forMaths, Science & Technology and Livings-tone High.

“We pride ourselves on our individualapproach to our scholars and their fami-lies and believe that this is part of why weachieve such success,” Noëline said, ad-ding that the KMF offers additional tuto-ring for all their scholars on all school sub-jects.

“Weknow that a quality education is tru-ly the one equaliser in life,” she said.

When asked if their scholars ever feltsingled out, Noëline replied with a very de-finite “No.”

“They are awarded their scholarshipsbecause they have potential to become agreat leader in society and this is some-thing they are proud of. Our scholars arespecial young persons.”

The “strenuous” selection programmestarts when the learners apply in Grade 6.Thirty learners are then chosen to join theKMF’s Junior programmewhen they enterGrade 7.

This entails classes every Saturday from09:00 to 13:00 for the whole year, she said.

“At the end of the year we select 15 of the30 scholars to become funded Senior scho-lars.”

SupportedJessi told TygerBurger she started the

programme in 2011 when she was in Grade8.

“Seeing my sister develop into the confi-dent person she is, I was immediatelydrawn to Rhenish,” Jenni said.

Jessi said Rhenish’s outstanding recordof a 100% matric pass rate and its longevityon the list of the Western Cape’s top 20schools also attracted her.

“I amextremely grateful for this scholar-ship. I am able to focus primarily on mystudies without the worry of the financialburden which I would have placed on myparents,” she said.

Jessi said the school fees at Rhenishamount to about R20 000 per year.

“I feel proud of my achievements and amnever singled out or treated differently, in-stead I am supported by my friends and fa-mily and I am treated as any other studentis at Rhenish. No pressure is placed onme.”

Tyrone said the programme afforded heropportunities and experiences “that sur-passed our greatest expectations”.

“With my wife not being able to work Iwould never have been able to afford theschool fees. . . and the girlswouldneverha-ve been exposed to such amazing experien-ces as the school encourages.”

Tyrone said Lisa, now a medical studentat the University of Stellenbosch, had toldthem she would also give back and becomea KMF donor.

Vandalism at the local sports field has beco-me a concern for members of the Wesbankrugby club.A new palisade fence was erected at the

sport ground andhuge parts of the fencewe-re recently stolen, apparently by youngs-ters in the area.It is unclear why the fence was stolen and

what it was used for. One woman to whomTygerBurger spoke said she suspects the yo-ungsters steal it and sell it afterwards in or-der to purchase drugs.Belinda Walker, mayoral committee

member for community services and spe-cial projects, said the palisade fence waserected in sections as funding became avai-lable. “The first section was erected in 2011,and the other was done in 2012.”Asked why the fence was erected, she re-

plied: “Sections of the old vibracrete fencewere broken and had been vandalised, andthus needed to be repaired.”Walker said the total cost for 2011 and 2012

was R750 000.

“This investment served to provide addi-tional security for the sports facility.”She said it is assumed that pieces of the

fence are being stolen for use or resale.“The City does its best to provide quality

infrastructure and facilities to all commu-nities across Cape Town as part of our com-mitment to creating a caring and well-runcity. But to be truly successful, we needcommunities to work with us by respectingthe infrastructure provided,” Walker said.V Residents can report suspicious activity to the police or to the City on 021 596 1999.

BELEID

sukkel, ontstaan dikwels ander probleme.

Sorg vir ’n rustige atmosfeer by die

huis en positiewe aanmoediging.Een van die groot redes is verkeerde

vriende.

skolastiese probleme. Ander siektetoestande of versteurings

kan studie nadelig raak, byvoorbeeld hoëangsvlakke of depressie. Waar so iets by ’n kind vermoed word,

Don’t be alarmed by the sounds of Miles Da-vis and Winston Mankunku echoingthrough the streets of Bonteheuwel, it’s partof a new initiative to give youth some direc-tion through jazz.Gino Oliver in Leadwood Street is well-

known for his passion for the music and hisneighbours are used to him hosting liveevents in his yard featuring some of the topacts in the Cape. Now he is taking it a step further with the

JazzYard Academy for youngsters in theneighbourhood.“My love for the music comes from

backyard sessions in Bellville South whereI grew up,” he says.“There were elders of jazz who were our

mentors, who opened their doors to the uni-que sounds of jazz, not just the international

side but also the legends from our owncountry.“The important thing is that they used the

music to give us direction, give us pride inthe legacy of achievement during thoseapartheid years, and it inspired us to makesomething of our lives.“That has been missing in our communi-

ties, and I want to bring it back.”Gino is taking it a step further as hewants

the project to be a musical lighthouse forthose who find themselves lost through cir-cumstances of poverty and economic mar-ginalisation.He is doing this by offering weeklymusic

classes for aspiring young musicians.“In this regard, God sent me a guardian

angel to help me,” he says as he points outChris Petersen who is showing an eagergroup of youngsters theirway around somecomplicated chords on the keyboard.“This is only the start but I am hoping

that more musicians in the area will offertheir services from time to time.“We’ve just started and you can already

hear the improvement in their playing, butthe important part is that they are also ha-ving fun, and it’s keeping them off thestreets.V Further information call Gino on 073 441 6863 orChris on 071 886 1791. Also check out www.facebook.com/TheJazzYard.

Die tekort aan straatligte in HappyValley inBlackheath mag dalk eers oor drie maandeopgelos wees.Die kwessie is verledeweek by ’n subraad-

vergadering bespreek.

Daar is altesame 14 060 huise, waarvan

200 PHP-huise is.

’n Sangmiddag ten bate van liefdadigheid isdie afgelope naweek by Blue Downs se Ver-enigde Gemeente-kerk in Eersterivier ge-hou.

Work Centre by the Disabled inBlackheath, geskenk.

A delay in funding approval by provincialauthoritieswas the cause of a hold-up in theconstruction of much-needed houses. The contractor at the development site,

Erf 901 in Kleinvlei, said in an interview re-cently that he is still waiting on fundingfrom the City in order to continue with thehousing project.Felix Dlamini, the contractor and owner

of Siba&SibaEngeering, said he is sick andtired of waiting.Wilma Brady, councillor for ward 17, rai-

sed the issue at a recent subcouncilmeetingwhere she demanded answers from an offi-cial representing the department of humansettlements.“My question is, sevenmonths later, how

far have we come with the department re-garding funding? Up until last year I questi-oned the vacant houses that are being van-dalised by gangs and youngsters using it (tosmoke tik) in the area,” Brady said.In an interview with TygerBurger Brady

said: “The contractor discovered as he wasbusy laying the foundation that the soil con-ditions were not up to scratch. He then hadto apply to province to increase the fun-ding.”“He had to go look for additional funding

to ensure that the soil these houses are builton is better stabilised.”She said as far as she knows the contrac-

tor made use of his personal funds to conti-nue with the project.Brady was informed at the subcouncil

meeting that the funding had been appro-ved by province, and will be paid over tothe City of Cape Town.Brady was also assured that the project

will be completed by June 2014. A total of45 houses still need to be built.Dlamini started building in February

2013.“The delay in payment has had a huge fi-

nancial impact on my business,” he said.Dlamini said he could not pay some of

his workers as a result of the funding delay.“Apart from the financial impact, this

has also had a negative effect onmy reputa-tion,” he said.Councillor Tandeka Gqada, mayoral

committeemember for human settlements, confirmed the contractor spent some of hisownmoney before being advised to wait foradditional funding approval fromprovince.“We received that approval towards the

end of 2013, and then had to get SupplyChain approval to increase the contractsum which was approved on 19 February2014.“The contractor has started work again,

and the City has met with him to discusscash flow, as the City’s pay run dates haveto be met, if he is going to be paid withina month.”The total contract value at present is clo-

se to R5,5 million.

My concern is that manypeople who apply for vacantpositions advertised are put offby the requirements forexperience.

What happens to freshmatriculants or FET graduateswho further their studies atprivate colleges or universities, and now are looking for decentwork?

One response is that intern-ships were created for exactlythe purpose of job experience. But in most cases internshipslast a year, some only a fewmonths or weeks, depending onthe institute requirements.

Even so, these young adultsapplying for positions are stillconsidered not experiencedenough, so what happens tothem? They return home, unemployed again because theyare not experienced and, evenworse, not given the chance tobecome experienced.

There are not enough juniorpositions available and notenough employers willing totrain fresh and young employ-ees.

In reply to ‘What to do withnuisance cats’ (TygerBurger, 19March).

The only way to solve thisproblem is to have the malecats neutered and the femalesspayed – I would have thoughtthat the SPCA would havementioned this.

Neutered tom cats do notsmell if they spray and do notfight other cats for a female inseason.

The price of petrol is gettingout of control – many havecommented on that.

The man in the street isasked to tighten his belt andbuy smaller cars – not a goodidea for mothers driving theirkids all over.

The only people not con-cerned here are governmentofficials and the president.

Who is settling these petrolbills?

Does the presidentpay for petrol?

An idea to save petrol, ifpossible, do not use your carover weekends. Get bicycles forall members of the family – lesscars on the road means lessdanger for the cyclists.

A lot of shopping can be donewith a bicycle.

What about some rickshawsor horse carts along beachfronts?

I have been very saddened bythe news that the violence inWesbank is escalating andinnocent lives were lost in thecrossfire (“‘Oorlogsone’ eis tallelewens”, TygerBurger, 19March).

I have been teaching origamito pupils at Wesbank No. 1Primary School and have manyfriends in the community.

I wrote this poem If a piece ofpaper can, in memory of10-year-old Jaimee-Lee Witbooiwho was killed in the crossfire:

If a piece of paper canbecome a crane, elegantlyplaced on your window pane, catching the eyes of passers-by,tickling the feet of their curiousminds, reminding the story ofSadako and 1000 cranes, sooth-ing the hearts troubled byon-going wars and crime, singing the melodies of lightsand shadows, and with a tip ofher wing, hinting them a will tocare and love their lives again,so can I.

So will I keep folding a pieceof paper, as your soul startsflapping, again and again on thebanks of Kuils River, where thetears of our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and childrenflow.

I am praying for peace for all.KYOKO KIMURA

Ag nee, man!

LEWENSKIEKIE

So verloor ook húlle geloof-waardigheid.

Redes waarom kindnie skolasties vorderElke jaar worstel duisende ouers,

sukkel, ontstaan dikwels ander probleme.

skolastiese probleme. Ander siektetoestande of versteurings

kan studie nadelig raak, byvoorbeeld hoëangsvlakke of depressie.

trede ’n drywer in hegtenis geneemwat 07:00 dronk was. Kan ons onskinders in so iemand se hande los?

The Western Province Softball women’steam coach has heaped praise on her play-ers after the team’s National ProvincialChampionship (NPC) win over the week-end.Province suffered just one loss in the

tournament and beat Tshwane in the finalat Turfhall on Sunday to claim the title.Margi Hill, team coach, says credit

should go to each player in the team.“I’m a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

I feel extremely proud of the players’ per-formances,” says Hill.“You can have a game plan but if the

players don’t execute it then you won’twin. I can’t describe how proud I am of thegirls. They wanted this and they were de-termined.”Hill adds that she never for a moment

doubted her team’s ability to win the tour-nament.WP would have gone into the tourna-

ment as favourites and didn’t disappoint.Hill’s side kicked off with an 11-1 drub-

bing against Kwa Zulu-Natal on Wednes-day, and pulled off several other heavy vic-tories during the tournament.Limpopo were brushed aside 18-0, Cen-

tralGautengwere despatched 14-2, EasternCape were thrashed 15-0 and North WestProvince were pummelled 29-1.

Tshwane were the only side to beat WP,edging the hosts 7-5 on Saturday morning. However, Province made up for the loss

with a comfortable 9-2 win in the play-offson Saturday night and an 8-5 win in the fi-nal on Sunday.Province player Nicole Fortune says the

win was meaningful for all of her teammates.“It was nice to bring the title back to

Cape Town considering thatWestern Prov-ince didn’t take part at last year’sNPC, andwe hadn’t won for two years before that af-ter having held it for so long before then,”she says.“It was awesome to win and even better

to win at home. We had so much support,

with all the spectators coming out allthrough the tournament.”Fortune says the games were still tough

despite the massive scores posted by herteam mates. The Western Province men’s team nar-

rowly missed out on making the tourna-ment final after a loss in the play-offs.Province had suffered just two defeats

heading into the knockout stages - againstTshwane and Limpopo. However, the men’s side came undone

against Erkuruleni in the knock-outrounds, losing 3-2. Province had defeatedthe same Erkuruleni side 4-0 in the groupstages, and the loss meant WP finished thetournament in fourth.

Province thrash opponents at softball champs

All the thrills and excitement of the first Ca-pe round of the SouthAfrican championshipSuper Series is going be concentrated at Kil-larney on Saturday. As far as the categories are concerned, lo-

cal support is certain for Bellville based for-mer Bridgestone Production Car championJohan Fourie, whose motorsport career be-gan with his first race as a five year old“kortbroek” on the Killarney kart circuit. Now at the wheel of a BMW, he faces the

likes of former V8 kingpin Hennie Groene-wald and the young Gennaro Bonafede intheir potent Sasol RacingAudi S4 fourwheeldrive quattros. It won’t be easy. Then, while V8 enthusiasts are going to be

entertained by the likes of reigning champi-on Big Ben Morgenrood, Terry Wiford, ac-complished women’s driver Clare Vale anda host of other FordMustang drivers, the SASports andGT events are certainly not goingto be one horse races.Veterans like the abrasive Roelf du Ples-

sis, Willie Hepburn and Larry Wilford haveopted for Chev Corvettes, while the experi-

enced Mackie Adlam and Franco di Matteowill drive their JaguarXKR’s.Morganrood’svictory is by no means assured. If that’s not enough, there are the sleek

Shelby Can-Am sports cars. Powered by V6Nissan engines, they are much lighter andhave a better power to weight ratio than thebig V8’s. With drivers like Rui Campos andAlan Eve, they could also pose a threat. Then, the boy to watch in the national En-

gen Volkswagen Cup events is the 14 year-young Sheldon van der Lindewho is still notold enough to drive on public roads. Sheldonfinished second to 19-year-old Daniel Roweduring the first round at the Zwartkops Ra-ceway near Pretoria last month. Not overawed by the occasion, he remai-

ned close to the leader in both races and re-ceived the “Rookie of the meeting” award.Watch him.The comprehensive 14 race program in-

cludes races for national SAMidas FormulaFord andMidas Formula VW single seaters,as well as the Midas Clubman category andthe Mike Hopkins Superbikes.
