Aprobe was recently launched intosmall but irregular deductions madefrom pensioners who drew their old

age grants at Pick n Pay pay points in De-cember.This paypoint service was made available

to all social grant beneficiaries in April lastyear, by means of their Sassa cards, whichmeans they avoid standing in long queuesfor hours at Sassa paypoints each month.During December several pensioners in

the Brackenfell/Kraaifontein area werecharged additional fees ranging in amountbetween R2 and R10, when withdrawingtheir pensions at Pick n Pay in Cape Gate.According to statistical reports for 2013,

2.8 million people receive social grants inthe Western Cape alone. Of this, 258 759 areold age grants.

Investigation“This is the first time a fee was charged,

before it was free.“And why was the fee not the same across

the board? Pick n Pay had a notice up thatall Sassa transactions were free and nowthey are charging!” said one of the pension-ers* TygerBurger spoke to.When this particular pensioner contacted

the Sassa call centre, she was advised by aconsultant that the matter was under inves-tigation.On enquiry, Jonathan Ackerman, direc-

tor of customer services at Pick n Pay, con-firmed that the store does not charge any feefor the withdrawal of Sassa grant payments.“We have consulted with Sassa and it ap-

pears that some Sassa transactions mayhave incurred transaction fees... Pick n Payconsiders the payment of social grants as a

service to our communities and does notprofit from it at all,” he told TygerBurger.He referred customers who found they

have been charged a transaction fee to theSassa call centre.ShivaniWahab, spokesperson forSassaal-

so confirmed that there should be no trans-action fees charged when beneficiaries ac-cess their social grants via approved mer-chants such as Pick n Pay.“Transaction fees apply only in the case

of ATM withdrawals, where standard ATMrates apply,” she said.“We will have to take the matter up with

CPS (Cash Paymaster Services) who is con-tracted to Sassa for the payment of socialgrants, for further investigation.”

RefundsIt is not certain yet what the outcome of

this investigation is, but TygerBurger couldestablish that no additional deductionsweremade from the pensioners in question dur-ing January.The deductionsmade inDecember howev-

er, were not refunded, according to one ofthe pensioners.“According to a Sassa consultant themon-

ey is still on my account but the Pick n Paysystem shows nothing,” she complained onMonday.CPS is a business unit of global company

NET1, who provides payment solutions andtransaction processing services across sev-eral industries.It is further stated that the company de-

visiting a friend’s house and while waitingoutside the gate, their dog bit her hand fromthe inside of the palisade fence.

Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waitingin his car, jumped out while he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately,where she received 27 stitches.This happened almost three months ago,

TraumaOn17December, someoneposted this com-

ment: “This 16-year-old girl must be pun-ished for causing poor Milo all the trauma& suffering! If it wasn’t for her irresponsibleactions this would never have happened!”The Janse vanRensburg family did not re-

spond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on social me-dia and made copies of everything. In theprocess they came across two other peoplewho have been bitten byMilo in the past andcommentsmade by Jordaan on several occa-sions prior to this incident, asking adviceabout her dog’s aggressive behaviour.Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’ moth-

Nearly two years ago she was diagnosedwith Guillain-Barré syndrome – a diseasethat affects one’s peripheral nervous sys-tem. Since her diagnosis she has beenwheelchair bound. Her dream for 2014 is towalk, “at least on crutches”.

Brooke Kleinsmith (14), from Highburyin Kuils River said despite the lack of prop-er physiotherapy her body has shown somesigns of improvement.

“These days the pain comes and go. At thebeginning she experienced excruciatingpain,” her mother, Roslyn, said.

Brooke said: “I was paralysed. I could notmove. It was very painful. I also experi-enced a lot of sleepless nights.”

Since then she has recovered significant-ly.

“She can move her leg, but it’s still toopainful to stand and walk.

“She can transfer herself into and out ofa vehicle, as well as into her bed...some-thing she could not do a year ago,” hermother explained.

Brooke, a Gr 9 pupil, is currently complet-ing her final year at the Paarl SpecialSchool in Brackenfell and hopes to get a spotat Jan Kriel High in 2015 where she will beable to finish her schooling.

“When she got sick, she was still in prima-ry school. She needed to be placed in a spe-cial school.

“Our options were between Jan Kriel andPaarl School, but Jan Kriel High was al-ready full,” the mother, a contracts admin-istrator, said.

She said they are hoping that Brooke will

be able to attend Jan Kriel, a school forlearners with special educational needs,next year.

Roslyn explained that her daughter hadbeen getting fewer physiotherapy traininghours than before due to the number oflearners who require this treatment at herschool.

A lady from Johannesburg, according toher, has offered to sponsor Brooke withmore physiotherapy classes.

“We believe that if she had been receivingher treatment at the rehab she would havebeen better by now.

“If she had been receiving the one-on-onetreatment she could have been walking oncrutches, maybe even walking by now,” the

mother said.The single mother had to cancel the train-

ing at the Western Cape Rehabilitation Cen-tre in Mitchells Plain due to travelling con-straints.

Despite the training she said her daugh-ter is doing well academically.

“She got the highest marks in class forEnglish higher grade last year.”

Brooke has also been appointed as one ofthe school’s prefects.

The teenager said she is hopeful about afurther positive improvement. “My goal isto start walking by the end of this year,” shesaid.

Her mom replied: “At least on crutch-es...baby steps.”

The police service has a number of va-cancies and are urging the public toapply for their two-year sieving pro-

gramme.Their advertisement is calling for ap-

plicants who are “young, energetic, intel-ligent, physically and mentally fit”. If youfit the bill, you will be enlisted in the ba-sic police development learning pro-gramme and deployed across the WesternCape where there are vacancies.

To enlist, you need to be a South Afri-can citizen of at least 18, but younger than30 years old, and in possession of a Grade12 school certificate or a National Certifi-cate (vocational): Safety in Society.

Applicants will also be tested for physi-cal, mental and medical fitness. In addi-tion applicants will undergo a psycholog-ical assessment and have to be found tocomply with the profile of a police offi-cial.

Applicants should also be proficient inat least two of the official languages – ofwhich one must be English. They shouldnot have any tattoos that are visible, andthey should have no previous criminalconvictions and/or pending criminal,civil, disciplinary cases.

FirearmApplicants should also not have been

declared unfit to possess a firearm, andbe within the mass and height restrictionrequired. This is: for men, not shorterthan 1,6 m, and for women, not shorterthan 1,55 m. The applicants’ Body MassIndex must be less than 30, and theirwaist circumference 102 cm (males) and88 cm (females).

Approved applicants will participate inthe basic police development learningprogramme – a 10-month training courseat a designated police academy. Duringthis time the police service will providefree training gear, meals and accommo-dation.

Also included are 12 months of trainingat a designated field police developmentpolice station during which the traineeshall be responsible for his/her ownmeals and accommodation. There will al-so be two months of integrated assess-ment at a designated police academy withfree meals and accommodation.

As soon as trainees complete the pro-gramme, they will be considered for per-manent positions within the police serv-ice.

BenefitsThe police will pay a stipend during the

academy and field police development pe-riod respectively, as well as medical aidbenefits for the duration of the 24 monthsof the programme.

Remuneration on completion of theprogramme will be about R123 687 per an-num, and permanent appointees will re-ceive the applicable service benefits.

Schools in the northern district of the north-ern suburbs (Brackenfell, Kraaifontein,Durbanville and Bellville North) escapedthe bulk of vandalism during the past De-cemberholidays,withonly threeminor inci-dents reported.The remainder of the city and province

suffered 38 reported cases of burglary andvandalism, of which four were major.Damages at this stage amounts to half a

million rand, with the final costs still to bedetermined.“I find it very disturbing that people are

prepared to damage a school classroom orsteal resources that are meant to teachyoung learners. The R500 000 spent on re-

pairs and replacement of equipment couldhave been spent on textbooks and readers,or on new technology,” Minister of Educa-tion in the Western Cape, Donald Grant re-sponded on Friday.The Cape Winelands District had 11 re-

ported cases, followed by Metro East (KuilsRiver, Bellville South and Elsies River area)with eight and Metro South (southern sub-urbs)with five cases. TheWestCoast districtreported only one case.The worst case reported, according to

Grant was at Joe Slovo Secondary in Khay-elitsha,where thedamage to two science lab-oratories and several classrooms was exten-sive.Grant says that ofmost of the cases report-

ed over the holiday period, copper pipingand electrical cabling seem to be the main

target.In five of the cases, computer equipment

was stolen.Inmost cases, these schools had alarmsys-

tems. And in others, 24-hour security.“Whilewe can try to safeguardour schools

with additional security measures, we can-not win the fight against school burglaryand vandalism without community supportas schools, given their extensive physical in-frastructure, are difficult areas to secure.”On enquiry the department declined to

identify the names of the three schools van-dalised in the northern district due to rea-sons of security.“Inmanycases, thedamages causedby the

perpetrators can result in a security threator breach,” said Grant’s spokesperson,Bronagh Casey.

TheCity of Cape Town’s Electrici-ty Services Department has com-menced an end-of-life replace-ment project for electricity me-ters.This project will initially focus

on end-of-life prepayment metersbut will be expanded later to re-place some of the older credit me-ters in the Greater Cape Town ar-ea. Eskom supply areas are not in-cluded in this project.The design life of prepayment

meters is approximately 20 yearsand the field failures of these old-er meters have reached the stagewhere planned replacement is re-

quired.Approximately 10 % of prepay-

mentmeters currently qualify forreplacement and the areas initial-ly targetedwill be thosewhere thedensity of older meters is thehighest.The city has appointed Elex Kh-

anyisa to do these replacementsover the next three years.If a meter needs to be replaced,

a notice will be delivered to thepremises to request an appoint-ment for meter replacement.Details of the notice will be

available to the City Call Centrestaff, should the customer wish to

confirm the authenticity of thecorrespondence. All staff will car-ry identity cards and use clearlymarked vehicles. The meter re-placement is compulsory andfree.The new meter comes with

The rough and tumble of life is all part of adays work for Muhidinsalum “Muhidin”Adla.During the week and weekends he per-

forms as an acrobat. His dream however isto someday start his very own circus school.Despite not having a fixed income Adla

(27), a professional acrobat who is originallyfromDarEs Salaam inTanzania says hewillcontinue to perform as a street artist andteach children in the impoverishedWesbank to realise this life-long dream.Apart from owning a school he also

dreams about one day performing for theworld famous Cirque du Soleil. “Inmy heartI dream about Cirque du Soleil,” he said.Adla is currently part of the group called

Mambo Jambo. He often trains with his fourfriends at the Multi Purpose Centre inWesbank and performs during the week andover the weekends in Sea Point, Camps Bayand theV&AWaterfront.Muhidin trained asan acrobat since the age of seven.He immigrated to South Africa five years

ago.“I came to South Africa to work. I only

work as an acrobat and have been doing sofor many years now,” he said.Muhidin has over the years also worked

for an international German circus produc-tion called Africa! Africa! and receivedtraining in China where he stayed for an en-tire year.“I started working for Africa! Africa! at

age 16 years. They saw me perform in thestreets,” he said.Muhidin started performing in the streets

of Tanzania to earn money for his parents.“My mother was unemployed and my fa-

ther used to sell clothes.”Muhidin started Mambo Jambo in 2013

with four friends. The group practises onMondays andTuesdays at theMulti PurposeCentre inWesbank. Muhudin also trains lit-tle children in the area without receivingpayment.“The training is a lot of hard work. We

practise a lot.“We look on the internet for new ideas, but

often also come up with our own,” he said.The most difficult trick to perform, he

says, is standing on someone’s head balanc-ing his body with only one hand.“It took me two years before I was able to

do that. Often when I train I always say ‘nopain no gain’,” he said.Muhidin and his group earn between

R1 000 andR5 000 a day. “Sometimeswe onlyearn R300, sometimes nothing,” he said.

Everywhere one drives inBrackenfell you see hugegardens on the sidewalks.

People walking their dogs orjust going for a family walkhave to walk in the roadbecause there is no space onthe sidewalk to walk. In somecases the sidewalk gardens areso overgrown that one cannoteven see traffic around acorner.

I can’t see oncoming trafficwhen I reverse out of mydriveway because my next doorneighbour has a sidewalkgarden, and when he has hissprinklers on to water hissidewalk garden my car getsabsolutely filthy from the finespray. Speaking to him hasamount to nothing.

Apparently, although thesidewalk belongs to the munici-pality it is the responsibility ofthe owner of the propertybehind the sidewalk to main-tain it. Surely the municipalityhas rules about what is allowedto be planted? Sidewalk garde-ners should be fined.

Almost all pirated copies of the film,Mande-la: Long Walk To Freedom which have beencirculating in South Africa do not have thecomplete film.

This is according to the South African Fed-eration against Copyright Theft (SAFACT)who discovered when watching a piratedcopy that theDVDstartswith the first 15min-utes of the film, but thereafter continueswiththe film, Invictus which was released fouryears ago.

The pirates have used the same cinemaposter artwork of the film Mandela: LongWalk To Freedom as the inlay/cover for theirpirated discs to make it appear legitimate.

The film was released on 28 November 2013at cinemas in South Africa and has subse-quently been released in the United King-dom, the United States, Canada, France, Hol-land, Portugal, Israel, Iceland, Switzerland,Belgium and the Middle East.

Germany, Finland, Norway, Spain, Den-mark, New Zealand and India will release thefilm later this month.

The film is not legally available in a DVDformat anywhere in theworld and thepiratesare defrauding the public misleading andmisrepresenting (them).

Producer, Anant Singh, says: “It is ex-tremely disappointing that the film is beingtargeted by pirates.”

In a press release, SAFACT stated that pi-racy kills jobs, opportunities and sustainableincome for workers in the creative industry.

The CEO of SAFACT, Corne Guldenpfen-nig has warned pirates that SAFACT is vigi-lant in the enforcement in cinema theatresand on the streets throughout the country.She also warned criminals that criminal ac-tions will be taken against all perpetratorswhether for fraud and/or under the copy-right legislation.

Long walk for half a movie

Bracken Nature Reserve staff along withmembers of the Friends of Bracken, recent-ly donated blood at the reserve’s Environ-mental Education Centre.

The group also made use of this opportu-nity to promote indigenous and water wisegardening.

Overall, 75 donors were received and in-digenous plants were donated to the first 20donors.

Western Province Blood TransfusionService promotions officer, ClaudetteArends, was pleased with the turnout andsaid it was encouraging to have two newblood donors come from the nature reserve.Assistant environmental education officer,Ben Molele, and reserve foreman, MarkFisher, who both joined the reserve teamrecently, have committed to becomingdedi-cated donors.

“As the manager of Bracken Nature Re-serve, a community member of the Brack-enfell suburb, and a blood donor, I wasproud to witness such commitment. It wasencouraging to realise that there are peoplewho still have the spirit of Ubuntu,” saidthe areamanager of theBrackenNatureRe-serve, Tshepo Mamabolo.

Bracken Nature Reserve is situated inReservoir Road in Ruwari. It is open dailybetween 07:30 and 16:00 and entry is free.

married in Lisbon, Portugal on 26 December1943. Today, they are still holding hands onthe couch of their daughter Maria Wilson’shouse in Welgelegen, where they stay.On 26 December 2013, they had been mar-

ried for 70 years. They celebrated it at aBlou-bergstrand restaurant with a sea view with15 familymembers: children, grandchildrenand great-grandchildren.“I come from a small village north of Lis-

bon. When I was 17, my father fell ill and wehad to move to the city. The next thing Iknow, we were living next to ’Tina. She was13 then, andwe started lookingat eachother.Two years later, I asked her father permis-sion to talk to her. He said no. EventuallyI did talk to her, and my future father in lawbecame one ofmy best friends,” says Emilio.Emilio and Justina were married when

she was 19 and he 22.“We had about 40 guests at our wedding,”

Inthose times we did not have big weddings,the money was not so much.” On the day ofthe wedding, Emilio and Justina’s parentstook them to see a show in Lisbon, afterwhich they escorted them to the apartmentwhere they were going to live. There, Justi-na’s parents handed her over to Emilio.Eight days after the wedding, Emilio had

to go to sea to further his training as an ap-prentice officer on passenger liners.Justina spent her time working on her

trousseau and making dresses. “I sewed alot. I had a beautiful trousseau. I did all theembroidery myself.” She carried on doingneedlework for many years, until in recentyears shewas unable to continue, due to fail-ing health.

They had two children, a daughter and ason, born inPortugal and in 1966 theymovedto Cape Town. They moved around a lotthrough theyears, due toEmilio’sworkcom-mitments. They stayed for anumber of yearsin Monte Vista and Mossel Bay and now re-side inWelgelegenwith their daughter,Mar-ia.Their son, Jacinto, went back to Lisbon as

an adult to follow a marine career, and

daughter Maria studied at UCT and becamea music teacher in Pinelands for manyyears.The De Sousa family has a long history

with SouthernAfrica.On 11August 1916, thefamous Cutty Sark, one of the last sailingships to be built before steam ships were in-troduced to the world, suffered a storm inAgulhas, lost a mast and had to be towed toCape Town for repairs. The ship was undercommand of Emilio’s uncle, FredericoVierade Sousa.Emilio’s father, Jacinto Viera de Sousa,

whowas a chief engineer in shipping,movedto Maputo to settle in the shipping repairbusiness in 1915.AfterWorldWar II, the fam-ily went back to Portugal.Throughout her life, Justina had to man-

age without her husband for long periodswhile he was at sea, but her children, grand-children and later great-grandchildren kepther busy. Emilio only retired when he was80.She visited Portugal a few times, and once

her mother, Clotilde da Silva, came to CapeTown for a four month visit, after Justina’sfather, Arturda Purificazzo died. “After thefourmonths,mymotherwent back to Portu-gal and died too, within amonth. Shemissedmy father too much.“They were very close. My father was a

lieutenant in the navy, a fantastic man. Andmy mother was a fantastic mother as well,”says Justina.They shy away from talking about them-

selves, but Emilio is keen to boast about his

grandfather who once received a letter fromthe Duke of Braganza in Portugal. “Mygrandfather, captain Antonio José de Sousa,once took the prince and princess of Portu-gal on a boat trip out of Lisbon. The princess’hat blewoff andmygrandfather gave her hiscaptain’s cap.“The ship was under his command. The

prince wrote him a letter of thanks after-wards,” he says, and shows me the letter,written in black ink on yellowed paper in aneat, Portuguese hand.The couple’s 10-year-old great-grandson,

Justin Botes, who is a learner at PanoramaPrimary is in turn, equally proud of Emilio.“Here is an interesting fact,” he says. “My

great-grandfather was the captain of the Di-as-memorial caravel.”As amember of the society ofMasterMari-

ners in 1986, Emilio initiated the building ofa replica of the sailing ship BartholomeusDias used to sail around the southern tip ofAfrica in 1488. The replica ship was built inVila do Conde, north of Lisbon. For the 500year memorial of this historic event in 1988,he sailed the shipwith 17 crew fromPortugalto Mossel Bay. Today, this caravel is in theMaritime Museum, Mossel Bay.Emilio andJustina de Sousa have two children, sixgrandchildren and eight great-grandchild-ren, with a ninth on the way in Februa-ry.“Whenever people have askedEmilio andTina how they have managed to stay mar-ried for so long, they always reply that everynight they kiss each other good night, nomatter what,” says their granddaughter.

profit organisation that works among theanimals of Fisantekraal,Morningstar andfarms surrounding Durbanville.The organisation is entirely self-funded,

and relies on donations.The FAW now also helps and advises

residents about animal care, provides sub-sidised food and feeds animals, bathes anddips dogs for ticks, fleas, andmange, helpssick animals, provides kennels, assistswith collars and runners, vaccinatesagainst rabies and other diseases, and or-ganises sterilisations.The volunteers of the FAWrun an infor-

mal shop, selling donated items to the peo-ple ofFisantekraal to raise funds.Unwant-ed, neglected, or abused animals are takeninto foster care to try and find homes.An average of 30 to 40 dogs are washed

on a Saturday morning by two or threevolunteers, up to 75 animals are vaccinat-ed on a day by only one person, and be-tween 10 to 15 animals are sterilised everyweek. The FAWaims to sterilise over 1 000animals this year.“All of this is done by 15 to 20 unpaid

volunteers based in three donated ship-ping containers with no electricity,” saidJane Payne of the FAW.Withhelp from theAnimalAnti-Cruelty

From testing the waters to jumping in,singer/songwriter, Daniel Crossing iscelebrating his first new year as a full-

time artist.With a string of interviews and songs be-

ing playlisted on local radio stations, DanielCrossing is hard at work promoting his mu-sic.“The last album that I wrote is a rock al-

bum,” Daniel explains, referring to his sev-en trackalbum,BetweenBorders andAngels.He prefers to describe his music as soul

rock though. “More soulful than anythingelse,” he adds.“Lyrics are very important to me and it’s

about expressing themeaning of those lyricsto the person listening,” Daniel says of hismusic.“I think the most significant event in my

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began.He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor,which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music.It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada.It all startedwayback in 1978,whereChar-

laine, then a mere five years old, startedswinging clubs at theDurbanville Golf Club.

Durbanville“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along toDurbanvilleGolf Clubwheneverhe would play. I used to take him on at chip-ping and putting contests all the time.“I have such incrediblememories of grow-

ing up playing golf at Durbanville and play-ing with the ladies’ section there. I won theLadies Club Championship twice.“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as a jun-ior and I also captained the Fairmont HighSchool golf team,”Charlaine reflected on thegood old days. She alsowon thePrenticeCupfor u-21 females in WP.After her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dreamof playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship to

Longwood College in Virginia and that iswhere my “career” began. I had a great col-lege playing career – I won the NationalChampionship for Division II schools 3times while at college and in my senior year1995 I won three major awards – VirginiaWomen Athlete of the Year, Honda Awardfor Division II Athlete of the year and To-day’s Top Eight Award (highest honour thatthe NCAA awards to college athletes),” saidCharlaine.

sprint distance of a 400 m swim, 14 kmcycleand 4 km run with the afternoon race con-sisting of an 800 m swim, 27 km cycle and8 km run.
