Police believe they have exposed coremembers of an armed robbery syndi-cate after at least 32 suspects were ar-

rested recently.While the majority of suspects were ar-

rested in Gauteng, as reported by City Press,a numberwere linked to reconnaissanceandattacks at local malls.The larger groupwas accosted after police

recovered and analysed cellphone data and

the operating network of members of thesuspected syndicate.The group is currently linked to at least

34 robberies, including those on cellphoneand jewellery stores, and a number of ATMbombings, City Press reported.Some of the armed robberies to have hit

the Cape since last year include incidents atCanalWalk, TygerValley, CapeGate, Somer-set Mall and Zevenwacht Mall in the north-ern suburbs, and southwards at LongbeachMall, Bayside Mall and High Constantia.In Kraaifontein, police had reportedly

been hunting two suspects involved in thebombing of an ATM inside the Seven Elevenin Northpine on 18 February this year.CanalWalk and Bayside shopping centres

were targeted by robbers in the same week(of 17 October last year). The Vodacom storein the Tyger Valley Centrewas hit on 3 Octo-ber. Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River as wellas the iPic Centre in Soneike were both tar-gets as far back as April last year.Of these, themost recent was the bombing

of an ATM in Bellville, which proved one ofthe biggestmistakes for at least sixmembers

of the syndicate.These suspectswere involved in a standoff

with a police general at the ATM bombingat the Old Oak Centre on 4 March, and werebeing tracked by a special police task force.This task force was aware of the six mak-

ing their way to the Western Cape by bus,City Press reported.Police soon used the cellphone data and

surmised the group had been scouting outcentres in Brackenfell and Tyger Valley –both of which were hit late last year.V To page 2.

ting his money where his feet are, in a longwalk for charity.The young leader aims to raise funds forthe Chaeli Foundation by walking fromStruisbaai to Bloubergstrand on a quest hecalls the Coast to CoastWalk, which startedyesterday.As a deputy head boy at Stel-lenberg High, Lohann’s jour-ney began long before his plansfor this big walk, which hehopes to finish at his school on13 April.It started with a dream. Anda wheelchair.His father, Pierre, tells thestory.“Lohann was born with anextra big toe on each foot andall his toes joined. He also hada tiny extra small finger onboth hands and his middle fin-ger and ring finger on bothhands were joined.”At birth the extra fingerswere removed and by age two,Lohann had had a number ofoperations to separate his fin-gers. By age three his extra bigtoes were amputated.“When he was 10 years old, operationswere done on both feet after it was discov-ered the bones in the feet were not grow-ing,” Pierre says.“By cutting the bone in half and insertingsteel pins into each piece of bone, the bonewas ‘stretched manually’ – we had to turnthe screws on the pins four times a day to‘pull the pieces of bone apart’,” Pierre says.“It was a long and painful process and hewas in a wheelchair for almost six months.During that time he discovered what it feltlike not being able to do everything as easi-ly as he used to.”Lohann heard adventurer and philan-thropist David Grier talk about his own ad-ventures and decided he wanted to do a trip

around the Western Cape – on his wheel-chair.This remained a dream, however, due topracticalities like passes and rocky beach-fronts, among others. But a seed had beenplanted.“When he was appointed deputy headleader at Stellenberg High last year heagain started talking about this dream,”Pierre says.“He then decided to walk and use hiswheelchair where possible, and to go fromone place along the coast and end at another

city or town along the coast. “Dis ’n vreeslike hartseerstorie,” vertelElise Denton van dié groep aan TygerBur-ger. Sy en die ander het saamgekom en ’nlys met praktiese doendinge saamgestel.

“Ons as hul vriende wou graag net helpwaar ons kan. Dit was ’n absolute skok,”vertel Elise.

Een van dié doendinge was die stigtingvan ’n Facebook-blad getiteld Francois &Ronell van Wyngaardt Ondersteuning.

“Ons Facebook-bladsy is iets om te beleef.Ons het dit vir hulle geskep en dit trek noual by sowat 20 000 mense wat in een weekal die posts gelees het.” Die groep het reeds’n ledetal van 1 561.

“Daar plak ons alles op wat elke dag ge-beur en hoe hy vorder,” sê Elise.

A well-known Italian cook-ing master was killed in acollision with a truck on

the M5 at about 13:00 last Mon-day.

Ester Ranzani (73) from Rose-dale Estate in Goedemoed, Dur-banville was well-known in thenorthern suburbs for her andher husband’s Italian deli, Ital-ian Cuisine, in Duminy Streetin Boston.

Many people will rememberher for the cooking classes shepresented in the deli kitchenafter hours.

The deli was well-known forits lasagne, filled ravioli andfresh pasta. Ester started givingItalian language lessons andtaught students in the deli.

Ester and her husband Enioimmigrated from Italy about 45years ago and stayed in Tyger-berg Hills for many years. Allthree of their children wereborn in South Africa and wentto schools in Tygerberg.

When Ester’s husband diedabout seven years ago, she soldthe shop and started giving pri-vate cooking and Italian lan-guage lessons from her home inGoedemoed.

She also presented Italiancooking classes to members ofthe University of the Third Age(U3A), of which she was a mem-ber.

“Ester had a great interest inlife and an enquiring mind. Sheloved to travel and was due totake a trip to Vietnam andCam-bodia this past Saturday,whichshe was really looking forwardto, said Penny MacKenzie, aclose friend and student fromDurbanville.

“She was also an avid readerand a devout Christian,” shesaid.

Another friend, Liz Fouriefrom Boston, said Ester waswidely known and loved. “I stillpicture going into the shop to

buy pasta, Italian tomatoes,dried porcini mushrooms orParmesan cheese,” said Fourie.

“One left the shop with yourpurchases, good conversationand loads of positivity andcheerfulness. She also readwidely and when the shop wasquiet she would sit at the littleround table in the afternoonsun reading. Her legendarycooking classes were great fun,very sociable and dramaticallychanged many people’s ap-proach to food, ingredients andwhat Italian food was all about.

“We pay tribute to a specialfriend, cooking mentor andmother. She left a legacy ofwon-derful food and positivity to allher friends. Our condolences goto her children.”

Ester leaves behind a daugh-ter, Julienne, and two sons,Christian and Allan Ranzani,and three grandchildren.

Members of the Bellville police were hon-oured for their longstanding service in theforce during a ceremony at the station lastWednesday.

Officers who received medals for 20 yearsin the service included Captain Iris Law-rence, Warrant Officer Kobus van der Mer-we and Captain Elvin Jansen.

Brigadier Sharon Govender, station com-mander, congratulated the recipients.

“It is a huge achievement for these recipi-ents as they are seasoned and experiencedpolice officers who perform duties withinthe visible policing and detective policingcomponents,” Govender said.

“They have articulated in their worktheir diligence and commitment to thetask.”

The drive to get early learning centres reg-isteredwith theCity and provincial govern-ment is in full swing.

The Early Childhood Development (ECD)drive – a joint project between City andprovince – will equip unregistered crèches,day-care centres and playschools with thenecessary information to ensure they be-come fully compliant ECD centres.

The drive began in February and will rununtil 11 June

City social development and ECD portfo-lio committee chairperson Raelene Arend-se said they will supply information on the

legal requirements and procedures for reg-istration to all relevant centres.

She said the City would meet ECD role-players, offer guidance and support withthe registration process.

by offering substitute substances.The Opiod Substitution Therapy (OST)

Clinic treats outpatients and offers a briefadmission for heroin detoxification.Prof Liezl Koen, head of clinical services

at Stikland Hospital, said the “highly un-pleasant withdrawal syndrome” makes itvery hard for addicts to stop using heroin.Ailments suchas abdominal cramps, anxi-

ety, irritability, muscle aches, diarrhoeaand a raised pulse and blood pressure oftenmakes detoxing unbearable.“The Heroin Detoxification Unit offers

heroin users a one-week admission to helpthem through this withdrawal period,”Koen said.

Substitution drugsWhen more conventional detox methods

failed, substitution drugs were employed.“Opioid substitution involves the use of a

medication such asMethadone or Suboxoneas a substitute to heroin use,” said Koen.

She said these medicationsprevented withdrawal symp-toms, reduced cravings andgave patients the chance to“stabilise their social function-ing and reduce drug related ac-tivities”.

Safe and effective“It is considered a safe and

effective treatment for aheroinuse disorder,” she said.The OST Clinic is an outpa-

tient clinic that takes place atthe hospital on a Mondaymorning from 08:00.So how to get admitted to the

clinic?Koen said this depended on

various factors.“Prior to being admitted to this unit all cli-

ents are expected to have had an adequateassessment, provided with psycho-educa-tion around the detoxification process andon discharge are expected to join a rehabili-tation centre that will assist clients inmain-taining a drug free lifestyle.”The clinic is open to all and before starting

the process, clients are informed of the side

effects associated with substitution thera-pies, that these treatments are currently on-ly available at certain private pharmacies,and of the costs of these medications.Koen said only clients who have been re-

ferred by a social worker or doctor are al-lowed to use the clinic’s services and areseen weekly. The clinic has two in-housepsychiatrists and a psychiatric registrar.

“Appointment of a fullmulti-disciplinary team is availableand is done when appropri-ate.”

Highest success rateEdna Lambrechts, a social

worker inprivatepracticewhospecialises in psychiatric ser-vices and addiction care, oftenassists local social develop-ment organisation MetroEvangelical Services.She spoke to Bellville role-

players at a recent meetingduring which the serious va-grancy challenges in the areawere highlighted.“The Stikland OST Clinic is

very successful. It has thehighest success rate in South Africa forthese kind of services,” Lambrechts said.The cost per patient permedicationdiffers

and Lambrechts called on churches and oth-er community organisations and NGOs tosupport the clinic, or sponsor patients re-quiring treatment.“We need to get clients into this service

and help sponsor them,” she said.

A young resident in Stellenbergwas approached by one of thebicycle patrollers while walkinghome recently. Both he and I,and probably most residents inthe area, welcome the investiga-tion. However, the aggressiveand demeaning manner inwhich the patroller addressedthe resident is utterly unaccep-table. He was verbally abusiveto an innocent person.When challenged on his

attitude and his rationale, thepatroller said that he wastipped off by another resident.As it happens, this accostedresident is black and anotherpedestrian who is white wasnot suspected at all.This young man has walked

Health advances will assist the economicand social growth and development of theTygerberg region.

This is according to the Greater Tyger-berg Partnership (GTP), which held its firsthealth innovation workshop on 26 March.

The workshop formed part of the GTP’sregeneration strategy and was preceded byvarious one-on-one sessions with privateand public sector stakeholders, as well asNGOs.

“The workshop focussed on the Tyger-berg Integrated Medical Portal (TIMP) anda Health Innovation Forum (HIF),” saidGTP CEO Chris O’Connor.

The medical portal will offer virtual ser-vices to health practitioners, patients, gov-ernment and academic institutions, hesaid. It will serve as a resource-sharing cen-tre where healthcare services will becomeeasily accessible to users through apps, onebeing an online appointment booking ser-vice.

The HIF will serve as the forum wherestakeholders can identify challenges andpossible solutions.

The workshop was opened by new Citymayco member for health, SiyabulelaMamkeli, who indicatedhis support for theGTP’s projects and requested he be includ-ed in the processes.

Die wedloop bestaan nouuit ’n marathon (42,2 km), halfmarathon(21,2 km), ’n 10 km- en 5 km-pretloop.Hierdie marathon is die enigste in sy

soort in Suid-Afrika,met 20 bussewat 1 200atlete douvoordag vanaf Langebaan Coun-try Estate (LCE) vervoer óm die Lange-baan-strandmeer na die beginpunt by

Tsaarsbank teen die Atlantiese Oseaan.Die atlete hardloop deur die Weskus-Na-

sionale Park (WKNP), wat vir die duur vandie wedloop vir verkeer gesluit is, terug naLCE, maar nie voordat hulle die uitmerge-lende Swartmamba-bult baasgeraak hetnie.Die ander wedlope begin en eindig almal

byLCEse gholfdryfbaan,waar daar ’n fees-telike atmosfeer sal heers met musiek, ’nmarkiestent vir die prysuitdeling, speel-area vir die kinders en talle kos- en anderstalletjies. “Deelnemers aan die halfmara-thon behoort die wegspring om 07:15 van-jaar makliker te vind, met dié dat hulle nieweer in die die dorp begin nie, maar langsdie eindpunt en registrasiepunte op die

sluit, is vir die marathon toelaatbaar.Deelnemers moet ’n Racetec-skyfie vir

die 42 km- en21 km-wedlopedraom ’namp-telike tyd te verkry. Registrasie vind opVrydag 24 April vanaf 12:00 tot 18:00 bySportsman’s Warehouse in Tygervalleiplaas, asook van 16:00 tot 20:00 by die LCE-

klubhuis. Saterdag kan marathonatletenog van 04:40 tot 05:30 by LCE registreer,met die laaste buswat teen 05:45 na Tsaars-bank vertrek.Deelnemers aan die ander drie wedlope

kan nog tot 30 minute voor hul onderskeiewegspringtye registreer.Die prysuitdeling is om 10:00 vir die

10 km, 11:00 vir die halfmarathon en 12:30vir die marathon.Buiten prysgeld ter waarde van meer as

Dit was ’n lang en harde pad tot in die eind-ronde,” het Jan Loubser, die afrigter vanDurbanville-Bellville se rugbyspan Maan-dagaand gesê nadat sy span in Rustenburgas die nasionale kampioen in die Cell C-Ge-meenskapsbekerkompetisie vir nie-univer-sitêre klubspanne gekroon is.DieDurbies se oorwinning van 31-30 in die

eindstryd oor die verdedigende kampioen,Rustenburg, was inderdaad ’n merkwaardi-ge een, in ag genome dat daar soveel faktorewas wat nié in die Tygerbergers se guns wasnie. BehalwedatRustenburg op ImpalaParkvoor ’n partydige tuisskare gespeel het, wasDurbell erg ontwrig as gevolg van beserings,wat op hul beurt weer tot gevolg gehad hetdat die tuisspan met sy geweldige gewigs-voorsprong voorlangs verreweg die meestebalbesit bekom het.Dit het meegebring dat Durbell behoorlik
