A second floor being built onto an Oak-dale home gives the owners a clearview of Robert Ferencak’s swimming

pool.Ferencak argues his privacy has been in-

vaded thanks to his neighbours, the Peter-sens, upgrading their home in RanelaghStreet by building the extra storey.“We cannot evenwalk or swim in our own

yard without our neighbours staring at us,”Ferencak told TygerBurger.He saidhe contacted the “Bellvillemunici-

pality” andwas told the construction shouldnot have been approved without his own ap-proval.“I decided to phone the people who deal

with the building plans and they toldme (thePetersens) have building plans,” Ferencaksaid.According to Ferencak, the Petersens had

told the planning department at Kraaifon-tein – where Oakdale building plans get ap-proved – that Ferencak and his family hadagreed to the building plans.“We did not,” Ferencak said.Rameez Petersen told TygerBurger he did

not need Ferencak’s permission.“The only permission I needed was to the

left ofmyhouse, to theback, and to thediago-nal back of my house. The entire structurefaces that way, so these three are the onlyneighbours directly affected by the con-struction.“What (Ferencak) doesn’t understand, is

that if I up the value of my property, so the

value of his property goes up.”Petersen admitted they could see into Fer-

encak’s yard, but only because of the con-struction work taking place.“It is purely temporary. As soon as the

construction is done, we fully intend install-ing massive blinds on that side, because wereally do not wish to see these neighbours.“I’ve even lifted the vibracretewall higher

so as not to bother them. Ever since wemoved in here about four years ago, they’vehad problems with us,” he said.“As the only brown family in the street,

there are constant incidents. They go out oftheir way to make us miserable,” he said.Local ward councillor Brendan van der

Merwe said this was the first he had heardof any complaint.“There is no Bellville Municipality and

hasn’t been for years,” he said.“Certainly, there is generally no law

against double storey units within residen-tial areas, however, it is normal practicethat when building plans are registered, theabutting neighbours will be informed viaregistered mail,” van der Merwe said.“If the application falls within the build-

ing law’s requirements and is in line withthe character of the area, then there wouldbe no reason to refuse the application. Ifthere are no objections, the item would nodoubt be approved.”

Aman was critically injured on Satur-day night after refusing to hand overhis keys to security personnel.

The man was driving with his lights on-

and-off, saidMarkHorstmanofBasset secu-rity.Two of their officers saw him as he was

driving down Durban Road and caught upwithhimat a garage further along the road.Horstman said the shift commander on

duty asked the driver to wait for the police“as he was endangering the lives of otherson the roadbydrivingunder the influence”.The security officer then attempted to

take the driver’s car keys, but “the driverhit his hand away and sped off down Dur-ban Road towards Bellville”. The securityofficers notified the Bellville police, Horst-man said.Bellville police spokersperson Captain

Die politiek in wyk 2 – tussen Bellville enParow – het ’n nuwe voorsitter opgelewermet ’n onblusbare lus om dinge ’n bietjieaan te wakker.

En hy kán sekerlik, want Angus McKen-zie is net 32 jaar oud, maar reeds amper 20jaar in die politiek.

Hy is een van 78 voorsitters van die DAoor die stad heen.

“My betrokkenheid in my wyk is om ‘nu-we lewe’ in ’n wyk te bring wat meerendeelsgesien word as ‘oud’ en een wat gebuk gaanonder sosiale probleme.

“Ek wil opwinding bring en mense se le-we verander,” sê hy.

Sy grootste taak gaan wees om die naamvan sy party, wat 90% van die stem in diéwyk verower het, onder kiesers hoog te houen enige moontlike probleme van grond-vlak aan die raadslid, Leonore van derWalt, deur te gee.

Leonore sê: “Ek is buitengewoon opge-wonde oor McKenzie se verkiesing. Hy is’n ‘woelwater’– hoe lank hy so goed gaanvolhou, weet ek nie, want hy wil vreeslikbaie goed doen!”

Soos sy eweknieë s’n, sal McKenzie se an-der take insluit om lede te werf, geld in tesamel en te help met die verkiesing vankandidate vir munisipale verkiesings, enom die party se gedragskode in die wyk tehandhaaf.

Van der Walt sê die takbesture het geenverantwoordelikheid ten opsigte van diens-lewering nie, behalwe om probleme aan diewyksraadslid uit te wys.

The driver of a black BMW without numberplates or lights was arrested by Bellville po-lice during the early hours of Friday mor-ning.

The police were alerted by Basset securi-ty response officer Ben Wiese, who had fol-lowed the “suspicious looking” car withtwo occupants, and noticed the driver swer-ving between the lanes, said Mark Horst-man, a Basset spokesperson.

Two Bellville police officers arrived ataround 04:25. The black BMW had stoppedat the Engen garage on Carl Cronje and the

officers investigated.“They found that the driver was definite-

ly intoxicated, the vehicle was not registe-red and the licence disk had expired in2013,” Horstman said.

Wiese noticed holes in the car “that loo-ked like bullet holes covered with body put-ty”. It appeared to him as if that part of thecar had been re-sprayed.

“The vehicle could have been used in eit-her a cash-in-transit heist or armed robbe-ry,” Horstman said.

Bellville police spokespeerson Capt Fie-nie Nimb, said the driver was arrested fordrunken driving, but could not say whetherthe car was linked to other offences.

Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville now bo-asts a new emergency centre.The state-of-the-art centre was officially

openedonFridaybyWesternCapeministerof health, Theuns Botha.“The new emergency centre was built at

a cost of R61 million,” said Sithembiso Ma-gubane, a spokesperson for Botha’s depart-ment.

Magubane said the new building boasts“R20 million (worth of) state-of-the-artequipment”.This includes four resuscitation beds and

ten trolleys for acute patients.“It also has 14 overnight beds that include

two isolation rooms. The building also hasa new medical records section,” Magubanesaid.

“innovering en inisiatief”, en sy is toe weerop 15 Oktober as die Wes-Kaapse wenner ge-kies in die kategorie “stille ster”. Nadia wagnou vir die uitslag van die nasionale beenvan dié kompetisie.Sy vertel aan TygerBurger van haar dra-

matiese, maar piepklein begin.“Ek was ’n premature baba – het net

500 gram by geboorte geweeg. Om my aandie lewe te hou, moes die dokters my ’n oor-maat suurstof gee – wat tot my blindheid ge-lei het,” sê sy.“My ouers hetmy nie as iemandmet ’n ge-

stremdheid grootgemaak nie, maar eerdervan die begin af vir my geleer dat ek net sonormaal is soos my broer, wat vier jaar jon-ger as ek is.”

opleiding en het ’n sekretariële kursus aandie Boland-kollege op Worcester voltooi.“Ek het ook later ’n Xhosa-kursus gedoen,

omdat ek geglohet dat ’nmens ’n groter kanshet om tot mense deur te dring as jy ’n basie-

se idee het van die taal wat hulle praat.”Sy sê die pad was moeilik.“Dit was aan die begin bitter moeilik om

Consider the traffic circle atthe Old Oak entrance toTygervalley Shopping Centre:there are three lanes from thecircle to Old Oak Avenue.

The left lane is dedicated totraffic from the north side ofthe parking, the middle lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’souter lane towards Old OakAvenue, and the right lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’sinner lane towards Old OakAvenue. Traffic on the innerlane may also proceed furtheraround the circle if required.

It is idiotically dangerous tocut from the inner lane circle

to the other two. Despite this,just about every time I drivethere is some idiot who tries toshove me across this barrierline.

Consider any of the roadswhich intersect with DurbanRoad. These roads have onelane in each direction. DurbanRoad has two lanes in eachdirection.

If you wish to turn left ontoDurban Road, you are requiredto turn into the left lane; thesame for the right lane

There are solid barrier linesbetween the two lanes and it isillegal to enter the right lanefrom the left – and vice-versa –as it would entail crossing thesolid barrier line.

It is dangerous to cut into theright lane from the left side.Despite this, just about everytime I drive there some left-turning idiot tries to shove meinto the centre island when Iturn right onto Durban Road.

Please wake up. Be aware ofthe road environment in whichyou drive.

“Superbikes, keep both wheels on the road,adventures bikes, keep to the road, HarleyDavidsons, keep up!” Those were the rulesfor the bike run that growled around the Ty-gerberg area for cancer on 1 November.

This cancer awareness campaign, Snorsfor a Cause, was organised and hosted byHarley Davidson dealerships across SouthAfrica on the launch ofMovember, andwithit R50 000 was donated to the national “Moreballs than most” men’s cancer and healthinitiative.

Hundreds of bikers in full regalia showedup at the Willowbridge centre on Saturdaymorning for the Cape Town run and whenthe clock struck 10:00, a collective roar co-vered the crowdwho then filed quite orderlyout on toTygerbergValley drive towards theN7.

Although it was more about the ride thanthe destination, the circular route took themback to theN1, DurbanRoad and theWillow-bridge centre again, where bands and braaiswere ready to cater for the leather clad parti-cipants with something soothing being pro-vided for the for the wind-blown ears andparched throats.

Front Against Gangsterism and Drugs),sported members including Numsa, EFF,PAC, Azapo, Eagle Park NeighbourhoodWatch, ParowConcerned Community, Busi-ness Against Gangsterism and Drugs, Ma-nenberg Action Community, Sbuyele’kha-ya, Macassar Rugby and a number of life-sa-ving clubs.After the announcement in August of the

formation of Ufagad, the coalition on Wed-nesday announced their executive council,tasked with “taking back the streets, com-munity by community”.Abdus Salaam Ebrahim, Ufagad presi-

dent, said his organisationwould tolerate nogangsterism and drugs, and nomore “impri-sonment of communities by gangs”. He vo-wed to eradicate corrupt police officialswor-king for drug kingpins.Ebrahim said their roll-out plan included

the education of the youth and offering Ufa-gad as a positive alternative to gangsterism.The group plans amarch inLanga on 5No-

vember and are rallying all community fo-rums and organisations to join forces withthem.“While we can, we need to take back our

communities,” he said.The Ufagad executive consists of an elec-

ted guardian council, a national governingbody, certain national directorates and a na-tional security council with a number of ge-nerals – “representing all the organisationswhich form part of the front,” Ebrahim said.He said they would be tackling the social

ills around the country, and in Cape Town,especially Bellville, Parow, Goodwood andPlattekloof, “where known drug lords live.”Although the group did not disclose their

The guitarist behind Afrikaans rockband, Zinkplaat, has been quietlyworking on a side project that’s been

picking up steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson Laub-

scher & The Violent Free Peace in about2004, while still playing with Zinkplaat, asa way for him to play some of the music heloved outside of the band.“This project started very organically,”

he says. Being a fan of blues himself, TheViolent Free Peace started out as a coverband and a way to have fun.“It kind of grew into something else.”Today the band,madeupofBassonongui-

tar and vocals, Beitel Van Der Merwe onbass and Jan Fyfer on drums, plays whatBasson describes as a good mix betweenblues, rock, folk and country.

Raw and loudAlthough the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.When they band first started, the line up

was constantly changing. Die Heuwels Fan-tasties’ Fred den Hartog even did a stintwith The Violent Free Peace and it was hewho came up with the band’s name.The band was enjoying a “beer drinking/

rehearsal session”when Fred suggested thename “DieWrede Vrede”, but being an Eng-lish band, they decided to gowith a translat-ed version.

“It worked out well because it’s an abso-lute pun and it works in the context of theband,” Basson says of his three-piece. “Plusyour name gets used big on posters becausethey have to write it all out”.Basson will make his second turn on the

Table Mountain Blues Summit stage whenhe performs with The Violent Free Peace inDecember.“It’s an amazing event and there should

be a lot more every year.” But Basson saysit’s interesting that he’s on the line up as hesometimes tries to steer clear of the “blues”label.He says blues, especially in South Africa,

has a bit of a cliched stigma attached to it.“People usually think of old grey guys sit-

ting in a corner playing the same 12 bar stuff

over and over.”His music is definitely influenced by

blues though. As a child, Basson listened topunk and metal, preferring not to listen towhat his dad was listening to, until he dis-covered his father’s vinyl collection at theage of 14.“He had this vinyl of this crazy dude with

this big hat and pink cowboy boots and a re-ally beaten up guitar. I remember I put iton and from the first track, the virus set in.”The crazy dude was Stevie Ray Vaughn

and Basson was hooked on the raw honestyof the blues.

Undeniable“It’s undeniable, if it’s in you, it’s in you.”Basson says his songs are like his chil-

dren, and he’s not ready to choose the oneshe’ll take on stage for the summit, but hemight just throw in a Led Zeppelin numberduring his set.The Table Mountain Blues Summit runs

No fear for title fight

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points

and we know where to attack. The im-portant thing for us is to focus on ourown game. Training has been excep-tionally good and Gideon recoverednicely from a niggling back injury. Heis fit and raring to go,” said Hattingh.

“It feels good to have that first win asa professional in the bag. I will also faceRegis Muyambo at EFC 35. I am lookingforward to getting in a solid perform-ance in front of our local fans and keep-ing a clean record,” said Michael.

Michael lives and breathes MMA. “Heis one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals in the sport. He isstill a rookie, but give him a chance, heis going places in the industry. He istough as nails, and his technique isright up there. I am very excited abouthis future,” said Hattingh.

The Table View Football Club women’steams had a splendid year, receivingthree top awards at the recent Tygerbergsenior league awards dinner.

Table View was the 2014 league winner,and won the Team of the Year trophy.

Ashley Kondowe was also announcedas the Player of the Year.

Table View held their own awards din-ner two weeks ago and Kondowe was thestar of the evening. She was awarded thePlayer of the Year in the Women’s TeamAward and the Club Senior Awards cate-

gory.She also walked away with the club’s

Golden Boot award for her 18 goals du-ring the season.

Robyn Windsor was the Players’ Playerof the Year, and Estelle Martin was crow-ned the Most Improved Player of the Ye-ar. Gary Heyburgh, who did a phenome-nal job as coach of the women’s first team,was awarded Coach of the Year.

Shenneca Cassidy, who captained thewomen’s side to victory, received theSports Woman of the Year award.

Following an exciting 2014 season, fiercecompetition marked the national finals ofthe Spur High School Mountain Bike Leaguethat was hosted at Bekker School in Maga-liesburg.

A record number of 355 riders represen-ting the cream of high school mountain bikeriders from more than 69 schools acrossSouth Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe whocompeted in the two-day event.

DF Malan, who formed part of the WesternCape team, came third in the interprovincialtournament. The 4.5km track at BekkerSchool proved more challenging than previ-ous seasons, boasting a lot of single trackstretches as well as tricky falls and climbsthat required both stamina and technicalskills from the riders. The lap-race formatof the event saw the various age categoriescomplete a specific number of laps ranging

from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a tes-ting five laps for the junior men.

The team from Menlopark High Schoolwas on top form and secured four podium po-sitions as well as logging a number of top tenpositions to secure both the girls and mixedteam national championship trophies, whileGrey College in Bloemfontein won the boysteam category.

The league was launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Spur and Amarider tocreate a fun racing environment for child-ren, and has also facilitated the building ofmountain bike tracks on school propertyand community grounds.

Earlier this year the league cemented itsposition as one of the leading sport develop-ment programmes in the country when itwas shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Dis-covery Sport Industry Awards.

Die byeenkoms is ook goed ondersteundeur atlete van so ver as Sasolburg en diespanne van Namibië – Edugate en Agri, uitonderskeidelik Otjiwarongo en Grootfon-tein se omgewing, wat dit ’n internasionalekleur gegee het.

Die dag het heelwat skitter-prestasies op-gelewer waar die atlete meer as 1 200 punteop die ASA-tabel verdien het. Onder die laer-skoolatlete was daar ook puik prestasies.

aan ’n besoekende atleet van HTS Sasolburgbehoort. JC Schultz het die hamer in die o.16-ouderdomsgroep met ’n skitterende gooi van61,64 gewen en is as die TygerBurger-atleetvan die byeenkoms aangewys.

Die Bellville-atletiekklub verdien ook lofvir die skitterende organisasie van die by-eenkoms. Alles het seepglad geloop en dierustige atmosfeer wat geheers het, het beslis’n groot rol gespeel dat die atlete so vroeg indie seisoen puik prestasies behaal.
