TYF Adventure are on a mission to fuel pupils’ dreams and fire their imaginations. We use real adventure to teach young people how to solve problems, respect nature and each other, understand risk, build confidence and have fun.
INTRODUCTION
5
TYF believe in real adventure. For 26 years
we’ve taken groups out to play in the
breathtaking Pembrokeshire Coast National
Park to inspire, learn and have fun, giving pupils
real hands-on experiences in a unique and
adventurous way.
Our adventure guides are some of the best in
the UK. They are professionally qualified, story
tellers and exceptional at what they do.
We will work closely with you and your
colleagues before, during and after the
programme to ensure the best possible
outcomes for you and your group.
We provide courses that boost personal/social
development and improve self-confidence. Our
guides inspire creativity, encourage decision
making and help provide children with effective
strategies to manage challenges and changes
within their environment. Our outdoor
adventure activities are directly linked to
National Curriculum subjects including
geography, science and PSHCEE, which helps
reinforce classroom based learning.
We are the world’s first Carbon Neutral
adventure company which means once we’ve
reduced as much carbon as possible, we offset
the remaining carbon we produce through
renewable energy projects worldwide.
TYF was also one of the first 50 businesses
globally to sign up to 1% for the Planet where
companies donate 1% of their income every
year to an environmental charity of their
choice. In the last three years we have donated
over £40,000 to environmental charities.
In 2013 we are donating our 1% to TYF
Connect, a social enterprise with a mission to
rethink models of education and ways of
problem solving to arm people with the
knowledge to face present day problems
around sustainability.

TYF ADVENTURE
Who we are
What we do
6
Since we opened our doors in 1986, we’ve had an adventurous
journey.
From pioneering a sport called coasteering to starting a
freestyle kayaking championship and opening the first organic
hotel in Wales, we have gone on to deliver exciting adventure
and sustainability programmes to some of the UK’s leading
schools.
We are proud to be one of the most respected outdoor
adventure centres in the UK, and in 2012 we picked up the
Coast Award for ‘Best Watersports Provider in the UK’.
TYF specialise in school trips and in-school learning
programmes to give young people a solid grounding in play,
outdoor skills, safety, risk and sustainability. We provide
anything from high impact school assemblies to self-supported
expeditions or ocean camps, and offer education and adventure
options to suit a range of budgets.
This brochure describes our St Davids based education
adventure programmes. For more information about our family,
individual, or corporate packages just get in touch.

education
TYF was born and bred in St Davids, Pembrokeshire, one of the
most beautiful, inspirational and creative corners of the British
Isles. St Davids is the wellspring of the energy, passion and play
that we share on our programmes. We’re surrounded by some of
the UK’s best beaches, clean water and incredible flora and
fauna.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Coasteering
10
TYF pioneered coasteering in 1986. Since then we’ve taken
thousands of people to have fun experiencing the wild and
wonderful cliffs of the St David’s peninsula. We provide a
unique opportunity to play with experienced guides in one
of the most spectacular playgrounds on the planet where
the ocean meets the land.
What’s involved
Climb, swim and jump your way around the bottom of cliffs. The Pembrokeshire Coast is dotted with
cave arches, stack rocks and channels to explore and has swell pools and pour overs to play in.
The location for TYF’s coasteering is at St Non’s. An incredible place 1.5 miles from our centre and
the birthplace of St David.
Pupils can explore their personal limits and overcome fears, bond with classmates, increase personal
confidence and of course enjoy a few hours of pure adrenaline-soaked fun.
Session length:3½ hours +

Learn coasteering with the people who invented it. Pop on a wetsuit, helmet and trainers and leap off ledges and low cliffs, scramble over rocks, slip in and out of caves and make your way around the fabulous Pembrokeshire coast just as nature intended.”

Kayaking
13
A low-impact, floating cruise from bay to bay on sit-on-top
kayaks, uncovering the hidden gems that remain unseen from
other boats or the shore. Explore caves and deep inlets on
calm days and when there’s the right swell we can take the
group to enjoy the roller coaster ride between islets and reefs.
What’s involved
You will spend plenty of time on the water with the backdrop of the stunning North Pembrokeshire coastline.
The session starts at a sheltered spot to learn some fundamental kayaking skills and play some games. Then,
providing it’s not too rough, we’ll head out of the harbour to explore the caves and channels around the
peninsula. TYF have a huge range of kayaks. For the beginner course your pupils will have a choice of general
purpose kayaks - either sit on tops or closed cockpit kayaks.
One of the great things about the St Davids peninsula is that it faces north, west and south, so there’s often
somewhere to shelter from the strong Atlantic swells and winds that often bounce around our coastline. If the
weather and swell are too rough to kayak then we will be flexible and rearrange the order of activities to find
something better suited to the conditions on the day.
Session length: 3½ hours +
Surfing
14
TYF have been teaching surfing since 1986 and have taught
thousands of people to surf safely. We use warm wetsuits, specially
designed beginner boards and skilled instructors with the aim of
getting you and your pupils stand up surfing in a few hours.
What’s involved
We surf at Whitesands beach, 1.5 miles from St Davids. It is a clean, safe Blue Flag beach with toilet
and cafe facilities. When the swell isn’t right we have Newgale beach just 10 minutes
drive away which picks up most swell.
Our half day surf lessons include a comprehensive look into the surf world, from the roots of surfing
to surfboard and wetsuit design, surf prediction and surf safety. We’ll teach you how to paddle, how
to negotiate the surf when making your way out back, how to prone ride in control of your board and
finally the art of standing up and catching your first wave.
Wales is a perfect place to learn to surf, with white sandy beaches and great waves all year. Our aim is
to make sure you leave St Davids with the skills and knowledge to surf safely anywhere in the UK.

Climbing

Abseiling gently downwards with the sea swirling beneath you.
Then a tremendous sense of achievement as you climb back to the
top of the cliff. Pembrokeshire’s sandstone cliffs are beautiful to
climb and at least 500 million years old.
What’s involved
Your climbing experience with TYF Adventure will allow the group to get to grips, quite literally, with the
beautiful sea cliffs of north Pembrokeshire. Your Single Pitch Award qualified TYF guides will teach all the skills
necessary to get you climbing on sites such as Porthclais, Porth-y-Ffynnon and St Davids head.
The group will cover:
• Moving efficiently over the rock through bouldering practice and coaching
• Securing your own safety kit
• The principles of anchoring the climbing rope
• Belaying practice
• A variety of rock climbs
• How to abseil safely

DESIGN YOUR PROGRAMME

We specialise in creating one to five-day bespoke courses to ensure you can achieve the right result to suit your schools needs and requirements.
100% Pure Adventure

Environmental Adventure
Life Skills
Using our core activities and further learning sessions, we deliver quality outdoor education that incorporates key learning outcomes without impacting on the natural adventure elements that make our programmes so unique.
Our team are always on hand to offer support ensuring that the quality of your visit is at its best.
There are explicit links to National Curriculum subjects including geography, science and PSHCEE, to help reinforce classroom based learning. Topics like balancing, forces, propulsion and vectors can be explained in terms of propelling a kayak or setting up a climb.
100% Pure AdventureOur 100% pure adventure programme gives every individual an opportunity to achieve at what ever their limit is. Surf, swells, cliffs, wild life and fresh air all combine to produce an emotional experience that really enhances the personal challenges, team building and outdoor education that occurs.
The programme provides the foundation for new friendships, provides real challenge, promotes resilience, teamwork and communication skills, and promotes a love of adventure which continues long after the course has ended. One to five day programmes staying at a choice of locations in the UK’s only Coastal National Park are available.
Leadership TransitionIt’s really important to us that pupils connect with each other, with teachers and the natural environment. Our leadership transition programme is a fantastic way for pupils to bond, build relationships, develop trust and confidence in each other at the beginning of a term.
We can deliver our Leadership Transition programme at the best time that suits you. 12 months of the year.
Environmental AdventureThe TYF Group was built on a deep care for the environment. Through everything we do we aim to have as minimal impact on the environment as possible.
This programme is designed to pass on 26 years of experience, passion and knowledge enabling pupils to gain the tools and skills needed to have positive impacts in school, local communities and businesses.
Life SkillsThe challenges confronted in adventure can encourage a way of thinking about risk, attitude and choice that is often different from those found in day-to-day life. Success, in challenging situations, helps to increase self-confidence, creates lasting memories, and helps build a more positive attitude towards ourselves and others.
Where our adventure playground doesn’t provide what’s needed, we design engaging, experiential & fun exercises that help young people make the links between their time with us and what they can do back home.

International Eats provide three wholesome meals a day using local and organic vegetables, dairy and meat wherever possible.
Groups can get involved by learning about where their food comes from, how it grows, how it gets to their plates and how it is cooked. We believe that by educating and involving young people in this process we can start to see changes in our societies behaviour towards food, diet and waste.
