Level A represents the greatest danger of res-piratory, eye or skin damage from hazardousvapors, gases, particulates, sudden splash,immersion or contact with hazardous materi-als. It calls for total encapsulation in a vapor-proof chemical suit with self containedbreathing apparatus (SCBA) and appropriateaccessories.

Level A Conditions:

1. Unknown Hazards

An effective and comprehensive safety andhealth program is essential in reducingwork-related injuries and illnesses and inmaintaining a safe and healthful work envi-ronment. The standard, therefore, requireseach employer to develop and implement awritten safety and health program that iden-tifies, evaluates, and controls safety andhealth hazards and provides emergencyresponse procedures for each hazardouswaste site or treatment, storage, and disposalfacility. The program must be periodicallyupdated and made available to all affectedemployees, contractors and subcontractors.The employer also must inform contractorsand subcontractors and employees of anyidentifiable health hazards or potential fireor explosion hazards before they enter theworksite. This written program must includespecific and detailed information on the fol-lowing topics:

1. An organizational workplan.

2. Site evaluation and control.

3. A site-specific program.

4. Information and training program.

5. Personal protective equipment program.

6. Monitoring.

7. Medical surveillance program.

8. Decontamination procedures.

9. Emergency response program.

Cleaning procedures are not anacceptable procedure for decont-amination. The user should devel-op and implement a decontami-nation procedure for each of thechemicals to which the suit hasbeen exposed.

After decontamination, wash down the suitwith a solution of low sudsing powereddetergent and water. A product like Tide®would be acceptable. Use warm to moderate-ly hot water to cleanse suit inside and out.Wash off solution according to federal, state,and local pollution regulations. This maymean using a catch basin, such as a wadingpool. Hang dry at room temperature.

Warning! Do not use garmentsthat are not thouroghly cleanedand dried.

Marking Recommendations andRestrictions

Marking can be made on either your alu-minized overcover or Tychem 10000 suit byusing a black laundry marker. Reflective let-tering may be ordered for either yourTychem 10000 suit or overcover throughLakeland Industries, Inc. This lettering willbe permenantly attached without comprim-ising the integrity of the suit.

The Tychem® 10,000 suit should be testedafter every use and at last annually, whetherit is used or not. If the Tychem® 10,000 suitfails the test, see “Testing” for more informa-tion. In addition to testing, the Tychem®10,000 suit must be inspected after every useand at least annually. A Tychem® 10,000Inspection Checklist has been provided atthe back of this manual to assist in theinspection.

Check the zipper for overall condition, wornor damaged teeth, and ease of operationLubricate zipper lightly with paraffin, whichis readily available in most grocery stores.Paraffin should be applies lightly to the innerand outer elements. After cycling the zipperseveral times, the excess flakes should beremoved. Do not use a sticky lubricant whichcould gather and hold particles of dirt,grease, or contaminant.

Repairs

The gloves on the Level A Tychem® 10,000suit can be replaced by the end user while inthe field. See “Glove Replacements” forinstructions. Any other modifications orrepairs must be done only by Lakelandpersonnel.

Warning: All NFPA modificationsor repairs must be done byLakeland personnel.

Do not send a contaminated suitto Lakeland! Suits must be decon-taminated and cleaned beforereturn or they will be sent backwithout inspection of suit.

When returning a suit to Lakeland,follow the procedures listed below.

1. Attach the following to the side of thereturn shipping container:

If the suit has not been used, a letterwhich states that the suit is in a newand unused condition.

If the suit has been used, a copy of thedecontamination document, listing theprocedures used, and a statement indi-cating that the suit contains nodetectable residualcontamination.

2. A Return Goods Audit number must be oneach container returned. This number willbe given out to you by Lakeland’sCustomer Service Department.

3. The Tychem® 10,000 Suit should beshipped folded in a case or box.

4. The suit should not be pressurized duringshipment.

Inspection Record

Before using the suit, look at the inspectionrecord and check:

1. The date that the suit was last decontami-nated.

2. The level of decontamination obtained.

3. The date when the suit was cleaned andsanitized.

4. The date that the suit was tested for leak-age resistance with the Lakeland Test Kit(part number 0010).

5. The suit must be checked with Lakeland'sTest Kit at least annually.

6. The date that the person making theinspection signed-off, indicating that thesuit is ready for reuse. See “AnnualInspection and Air Pressure Test Chart”.

Suit Physical Inspection

1. Look at the suit closely, checking for miss-ing or damaged parts.

2. Look for holes and tears in the fabric.

3. Look for wear or abrasion that could let achemical penetrate the suit. Inspect allseams thoroughly.

4. Check the gloves and boots for tears orabrasions. Pull on the boots and gloves tomake sure that they are firmly attached.

5. Check the lens for cracks or deep scratches.

6. Check that the zipper has been lubricated;see section entitled “Maintenance andRepairs”.

Inspect the breathing apparatus according tothe manufacturer’s instructions. Check thepressure gauge to be sure that the cylinder isfully charged.

If you find any signs of wear,damaged, or missing parts, donot use the suit!

Retirement and Disposal Criteria

Use department procedures for disposal ofsuit. Lakeland Tychem 10,000 suits can beincinerated.

Tests should be conducted on your LakelandLevel A Suit after every use and annually,whether the suit is used or not. These testinstructions are standard based on ASTMF1052 “Practice for Pressure Testing of TotallyEncapsulated Chemical Protective Suits”. Notethat air expands or contracts depending ontemperature. Always let a chemical suit reachroom temperature before testing. The supplyair that is used should be the same tempera-ture as the environment in which the suit isto be tested. Do not test the suit near an airconditioner or a heater. Also, before openingthe suit storage container, make sure the suitis either new and unused or, if the suit hasbeen used that it has been decontaminated.After decontamination has been confirmed,proceed as follows:

1. Lay suit to be tested face down on a tablefree of obstacles; straighten to remove anyfolds/wrinkles.

2. Remove snap-on cover and diaphragm(flappers) from all exhaust valves.

3. Insert twist lock adapter from air sourceinto exhaust valve located on the head ofthe suit; turn clockwise.

4. Insert twist lock adapter connected toguage into exhaust valve located on theback of right body; turn clockwise.

5. Insert twist lock plug adapter into thethird exhaust valve located on the backleft body (If your garment is a NFPA com-plete ensemble) to serve as a plug to pre-vent air from escaping.

6. Close all openings. Make sure the zipper iscompletely closed! Check any pass-throughs.

7. Place test kit gauge on level surface. Checkdial calibration – needle should be at zero;adjust if necessary. (Refer to manufacturersbulletin enclosed).

8. Remove tubing loop from storage bracketsin lid, by depressing flat tab on end ofbrackets to release top of bracket. Separatetubing sections by depressing release tabon quick connect couplings.

9. Connect short tubing with male nipple tofemale quick connect on brass cross (withID and serial number) and connect other endto adapter in the head of suit.

10. Connect long tubing with female body tomale nipple quick connect on brass tee atguage and connect other end of tubing totwist lock fitting located on the back rightside of suit.

11. Turn the air flow control valve crosswise,to the off position. Connect outside com-pressed air source to the male quick con-nect fitting on brass manifold tee of testkit. (The most popular male fitting is sup-plied; if your air supply is not compatiblewith this fitting, remove and replace with acomparable fitting that is compatible.

12. Inflate suit by opening air control valveslowly! Pressurize the suit to 5 inches ofwater column indicated on gauge, hold forone (1) minute. This should fill out wrin-kles in the suit.

Note: Check gauge dial frequent-ly by closing air supply controlvalve to make certain suit pres-sure does not exceed 5 inches ofwater column pressure. Overinflation can damage suit materi-al and seams beyond repair!

13. Remove countdown alarm timer fromstorage bracket in lid by depressing clip onback of timer, remove battery compart-ment lid on back of timer, invert batteryand replace (refer to manufacturers bul-letin enclosed).

To extend service life of timer battery,remove battery, invert and replaceduring storage.

14. Set countdown timer to exactly four (4)minutes. Reduce water column pressure toexactly four (4) inches of water columnpressure by depressing the relief valve but-ton located on the brass tee at air inletmanifold.

15. Begin test.

Do not move or touch the suitduring timed test, as this willaffect the water column pressureresulting in inaccurate reading.

Record suit pressure at the end of the four (4)minutes. Suit pressure of 3.2 inches or moreindicates that the suit has passed as leak free.The suit is ready for service after test kithoses and adapters have been removed andexhaust valves have been reassembled. Suithas failed test if pressure is less than 3.2 inch-es after the four (4) minute period.

Instructions for Ring and ClampAssembly Removal

1. Turn sleeve inside out.

2. Remove tape and rubber band over clampat top of glove.

3. Using a hex socket or ratchet, loosen screwon glove clamp, remove clamp. Do not usea screwdriver to loosen clamp, as screw-driver may slip and damage suit.

4. Remove rubber band.

5. Pull glove assembly out of sleeve.

Installation

1. Sleeve should be inside out.

2. Insert PVC ring in glove so that 2 inches ofthe glove is above top of ring.

3. Place glove in sleeve, fingers toward youand middle finger in line with shoulderseam. Pull until tight.

4. Place elastic band centered on line withPVC ring.

5. Center glove clamp on rubber band, usinga hex socket driver or ratchet to tightenscrew. Tighten clamp. Do not use a screw-driver to tighten screw, as screwdrivermay slip and damage suit.

6. Turn the 2” glove overlap over clamp.Place wide rubber band over clamp.

7. Securely wrap area over PVC ring andclamp with flexible tape.

8. Turn suit sleeve right side out.

Instructions for Quick DisconnectAssembly. (Installation).

1. Sleeve should be inside out.

2. Insert Silvershield® glove through maleglove ring, turn at least 3 inches of theglove edge back over the edge of the glovering.

3. Insert the male glove ring through the suitopening down to the sleeve opening.

4. Place the clamp 3/8” from the edge of theglove ring, and tighten firmly in placeusing a hex driver.

The locking pin must be centered withthe middle finger of the glove and thesleeve seam to insure proper alignment.

5. Place a 7/8” rubber band over the clamp toprevent it from puncturing the suit, coverthe rubber band with at least 3 rounds ofblack electrical tape.

6. Pull sleeve back through suit andstraighten.

7. Insert female glove ring (grooved sidefirst) into outer glove so that the gloveextends 3” past the grove in the ring. Place5/8" rubber band over cuff clamp into thegrove in the ring and tighten using a hexdriver. Do not use a screwdriver, as screw-driver may slip and damage suit.

8. Cover the clamp with at least three roundsof black electrical tape to prevent clampfrom damaging the suit.

Employers are required to develop andimplement a program to inform workers(including contractors and subcontractors)performing hazardous waste operations ofthe level and degree of exposure they arelikely to encounter.

Employers are also required to develop andimplement procedures for introducing effec-tive new technologies that provide improvedworker protection in hazardous waste opera-tions. Examples include foams, absorbents,neutralizers, etc.

Training makes workers aware of the poten-tial hazards they may encounter and pro-vides the necessary knowledge and skills toperform their work with minimal risk totheir safety and health. The employer mustdevelop a training program for all employeesexposed to safety and health hazards whenworking with hazardous chemicals or work-ing in hazardous waste operations. Bothsupervisors and workers must be trained torecognize and prevent hazards; to select, carefor; and use respirators properly as well as.other types of personal protective equip-ment ; to understand engineering controlsand their use; to proper decontaminationprocedures; to understand the emergencyresponse plan, medical surveillance require-ments, confined space entry procedures, spillcontainment program, and any appropriatework practices. Workers must also know thenames of personnel and their alternatesresponsible for site safety and health.

Employees at all sites must not perform anywork in or around hazardous waste opera-tions or sites unless they have been trained tothe level required by their job function and

responsibility and have been certified bytheir instructor as having the necessary train-ing. All emergency responders must receiverefresher training sufficient to maintain ordemonstrate competency annually.Employee training requirements are furtherdefined by the nature of the work (e.g., tem-porary emergency response personnel, fire-fighters, safety officers, Hazmat personnel,incident commanders, etc.) These require-ments may include recognizing and knowingthe hazardous materials and their risks,knowing how to select and use appropriatepersonal protective equipment, and knowingthe appropriate control, containment, or con-finement procedures and how to implementthem. The specific training and competencyrequirements for each personal category areexplained fully in the final rule(54 FR 42:9294, March 6, 1989).

It is your responsibility, as a userof this Tychem® 10,000 TotalEncapsulated Suit, to be aware ofand comply with all phases ofyour employer’s safety andhealth program, including train-ing. Failure to do so could lead toan accident which may result insevere personal injury or death.

Wear cotton underwear and socks to helpabsorb perspiration. Coveralls made fromflame resistant synthetic materials, such asNomex®, offered by Lakeland Industries, arerecommended, especially if exposure toflash-fire is a concern. Coveralls should havesleeves that can be closed tightly and legsthat can be tucked into the socks. If theTychem® 10,000 suit is to be worn in a coldenvironment, wear thermal underwear tohelp stay warm. Under extreme conditions,the lens may fog up. Carry a clean cloth withyou to wipe the lens from the inside. Anti-fog agents can be purchased from most localstores. Lakeland Industries does not sell orapply any agents to the suit lens.

Good safety practices require an assis-tant to help you don and doff the suit.This is easier and quicker, and you willavoid stumbling or tripping which mayresult in personal injury or damage tothe suit.

Follow these steps in putting on the suit:

1. Make sure the suit has been visuallyinspected, air pressure tested and is freefrom defects. Also make sure the correctsuit has been selected for the intended use.

2. Underclothing should be worn under thechemical suit. As a minimum, a long sleeveshirt and long pants or “long underwear”are recommended.

3. Remove all personal affects which mightresult in damage to the suit (e.g. pens,badges, jewelry, etc.).

4. Remove shoes. Most boots don’t allowstreet shoes. Lakeland’s NFPA approvedboots do not.

5. Tuck pant cuff into socks to make donningof suit legs and sock boot easier.

6. If using a SCBA (Self Contained BreathingApparatus), check the level of air, com-plete all connections, make all adjustmentsin accordance with the manufacturer’sprocedures. Do not put the face piece on,yet, unless required by the design of theSCBA.

7. While seated. place both legs into the suit.Stand up and attach the internal waist belt.Belt is intended to help adjust the fit of thesuit.

8. Turn on the air supply, put on facepiece,and make sure air supply system is work-ing properly.

9. Place arms and head inside the suit, closethe zipper, then velcro shut the fly over thetop of the zipper.

10. The person assisting should check tomake certain the zipper covers are com-pletely closed, all airline connections aretight, and suit appears to be workingproperly.

Like any piece of complex equip-ment, the Tychem® 10,000 suitwill perform as designed only ifused and serviced according toLakeland’s instructions. All indi-viduals who have or will have theresponsibility for using theTychem® 10,000 suit must readthese precautions carefully andunderstand them. Failure to do somay result in severe personalinjury or death.

1. Avoid direct flame contact. Do not use theTychem® 10,000 near a fire or open flame.The Tychem® 10,000 material will melt.

2. Do not wear a suit without breathable air.An air supply is mandatory to prevent suf-focation. An air-line alone is prohibited byOSHA regulations in IDLH atmospheres.

3. Do not use oxygen cylinder or oxygen gen-erating breathing apparatus while wearinga Tychem® 10,000 Suit. A severe fire haz-ard could result.

4. Never work alone in hazardous areas.Always work with another person andhave at least one person on standby withequal protective equipment.

5. Do not pull on air supply hose as aretrieval device. To do so may cause theair-supply hose to tear out of the suit andexpose the wearer.

6. Avoid continuous exposure. Do not exposethe suit to a constant liquid splash or del-uge, or wade through liquid pools onpurpose.

7. Prevent heat stress. Workers who weartotal-encapsulating suits must be in goodphysical condition. Consult a medical doc-tor before donning Tychem® 10,000 suit tobe sure you are capable of wearing itunder expected use conditions. The wearercan take several steps which may preventheat stress, such as wearing an ice-vest,feeding the suit with body-cooling air, andtaking frequent rest periods during thework session.

8. Leave the “Hot Zone” immediately if youexperience these symptoms; fever, nausea,dizziness, eye irritation, difficulty inbreathing, becoming fatigued or anyunusual order or taste.

The person assisting in the doffing pro-cedure should be wearing the appropri-ate attire selected by Qualified SafetyPersonnel.

1.The person assisting should open the zip-per flaps by separating the velcro attachedto the fly and open the zipper by pullingthe zipper tab at the opening of the zipper.

2.The user should pull their arms back intothe body of the suit, remove their hard hat,and hand hat to the assistant (this will pre-vent the assistant from touching the innersuit with their gloves that may be wet orcontaminated .

3.Carefully remove the head and arms fromthe suit.

4.Loosen the air supply mask (allow themask to hang around the neck until the airsupply has been cut off. Remove the airsystem per the instructions provided withthat particular system.

5.Loosen the suit belt and allow suit to fall.Assume a sitting position for stability. Theassistant should remove the outer bootsand hold the bottom of each leg to allowthe user to remove legs from the suit moreeasily.

Recommended Storage Practices1. Store the Level A or NFPA Complete

Ensemble in a clean, dry location, awayfrom direct sunlight.

2. Suit should be stored laying flat, ifpossible.

3. Store the suit with zipper open.

4. At least annually perform inspection withchecklist at the back of this manual, andperform the suit pressure test using theinstructions under “How To Use TestEquipment And Air Pressure Testing.”

5. NFPA complete ensembles are to be storedthe same as a Level A suit.

6. Suits can be stored in their original carry-bags, or on a hanger.

Shelf LifeChemical suits contain components madefrom various polymer or rubber materials forwhich there is no specific life data currentlyavailable. Based on the physical condition ofthe suit, it is recommended that downgrad-ing the suit to “Training Use Only” be consid-ered after five years. If this is done; each suitwill need to be visually marked on the outerside “For Training Use Only”, so that all per-sonnel will notice it has been down graded.

Decontamination – ChemicalStandard 1910.120 states that “a decontamina-tion procedure shall be developed, communicatedto employees and implemented before any employ-ees or equipment may enter areas on site wherepotential for exposure to hazardous substancesexists”.

The Environmental Protection Agency con-siders decontamination to be a complexoperation that requires a detailed plan ofprocedures. Actual decontamination proce-dures must be developed by those with fullinformation on the type and level of the cont-aminant. Consult the Materials Safety DataSheet for the hazardous substance you areworking with.

After decontamination, suits may be handwashed using warm water and a mild deter-gent (see “Cleaning Instructions” in this man-ual). Appropriate equipment should be wornduring these activities to prevent contactwith any residual contamination. Afterwashing, suits should be rinsed well withwarm water and hung away from intenseheat or sunlight to dry. Before reuse, a quali-fied health professional must determine thatan adequate level of decontamination hasbeen achieved.

Tychem® 10,000 suits are economicallypriced limited-use garments, and notdesigned for multiple wash and decontami-nation. Chemical suits which become conta-minated with toxic chemicals or show signsof physical wear, (see “Maintenance AndRepairs”), should be retired or disposed of ina safe manner.

Decontamination – BiologicalAt the scene, place contaminated garmentsinside a leak-proof container and marked as“Biological Contaminated.” These garmentsmust be destroyed by a Certified WasteDisposal Company. DO NOT attempt todecontaminate any garments that have comein contact with any Biological Threat.

A protective garment must resist hazardouschemical attack from three different routes ofentry: Permeation, Penetration andDegradation.

Permeation describes a process by whichchemicals migrate through a material.. Itinvolves chemical solubility in a material andthe ability for chemicals to “diffuse” throughthe material as a liquid, gas, or vapor.Measuring permeation is important becausechemicals may penetrate protective materialswithout visible effects. Many of today’schemicals are toxic in vapor form, throughskin absorption or inhalation. The Tychem®10,000 material resists permeation of thesechemical vapors, depending on the type ofchallenge chemical. Method F739 providesflexibility for choosing different test hard-ware and conditions while specifying proce-dures.

Penetration occurs when a chemical entersthe suit through a physical imperfection,such as a damaged seam or zipper, a tear, apinhole, a loose glove, boot, or lens.

Suits must be leak-tested in the field toensure their penetration resistance. Simplebubble-indicating leak tests, without measur-ing pressure-drop over time, are notpractical.

The Lakeland Test Kit (part number 0010)measures penetration resistance by indicat-ing pressure-drop over time. It permits theuser to inflate the suit with an SCBA, mea-sure the pressure put into the suit, and therate at which the pressure may drop.

Degradation takes place when a chemicaldegrades one or more of the suit’s physicalproperties, such as material thickness, color,tear resistance, abrasion resistance, and soforth. Such a physical change may not neces-sarily affect the material’s permeation resis-tance. However just the opposite is also pos-sible. A challenge chemical could permeatethe garment material almost immediatelywithout changing its physical appearance atall. Tests were performed under laboratoryconditions-not actual workplace conditions.They address breakthrough characteristicsand do not account for other performancecharacteristics. They are not, in and of them-selves, recommendations.

Lakeland chemical suits are designed to beworn over regular work clothing, and are notdesigned to protect from all hazards in thework place. Additional equipment such asprotective eyewear, protective boots, addi-tional gloves, hard hats, cooling systems,communications systems, etc. may berequired and should be selected by a safetyprofessional.

1. Garment Materials-are of Aluminized PBIKevlar® and Aluminized Glass. (Flash fireprotective only)

2. Suit design is to be worn only in conjunc-tion with a approved Tychem® 10,000Level A Chemical suit that accommodatesa self contained breathing apparatus insidethe suit.

3. All seams are stitched with Nomex®thread on the inside and top stitched onthe outside.

4. Closure is a 4” wide flap made out of thesuit material; held in place with 1” blackfull-length velcro. Front Entry: starts at leftside of hood front and across body. RearEntry: center back.

6. The head area is designed to accommodatea SCBA face piece and allow user to wear ahard cap or fireman’s helmet.

1. Suit fabric to be laminated film- Tychem®10,000.

2. Suit Design- Expanded back to accommo-date wearing of self contained breathingapparatus inside suit.

3. All seams stitched with 50/2 Permaspun®thread and sealed with specialized seamtape inside and out.

4. Zipper closure is a 48” PVC OEB designzipper with a vapor-proof closure by a 4”wide flap of suit material, and held inplace by 1/2” full length velcro. FrontEntry: left side of hood and across back.Rear entry: center back.

5. Visor/Lens materials- is a 40 mil PVC lensand a 10 mil FEP Teflon® lens sandwichedtogether using a specialized seam tape andprocess. This Visor/Lens is designed toensure maximum visibility.

6. Head area-is designed large enough toaccommodate a SCBA face piece and to beable to allow user to wear a hard cap orfiremen’s helmet.

7. The optional pass-thrus, if purchased, willbe located on the right hip area to allow forhook-up to outside air for breathing andcooling.

8. Three Pirelli® valves designed to release at1/2 lb. of pressure are located as follows:1- on the right side of the back of the hood,1- on the right side of the expanded back

and 1- on the left side of the expandedback.

10. The suit has attached sock boots with asplash guard to fit over industrial NFPAapproved boots. Both sock boots andsplash guards are constructed of Tychem®10,000 materials.

12. Spacious sleeve design allows wearer tohave access to SCBA controls by pullingarm from sleeve while still in suit. The suitis designed to allow room for 2-way radiocommunication systems.

Tychem® 10,000 Inspection Checklist

Material Check for any abrasions, holes, or tears.

Zipper Check for overall condition, worn or damaged teeth, ease of opera-tion. Lubricate zipper lightly with paraffin, which is readily availablein most grocery stores. Parrafin should be applied lightly to the innerand outer elements. After cycling the fastener several times, the excessflakes should be removed. Do not use s sticky lubricant, which couldgather and hold particles of dirt, grease, or contaminant. Garmentshould be stored with the fastener open.

Facepiece Check that there are no splits, cracks. or deep scratches.

Gloves Check glove integrity, PVC ring, quality of rubber bands, tightness ofmetal ring.

Exhalation valve Check for freedom from obstructions and dirt; if replacement ofvalves are needed, send back to Lakeland for replacement.

Seams Visually check for any split seams, tears, or separations of material.

Leak Test Follow procedures out-lined under “Testing”

Log Please mark log according to your findings. Date and sign, so that thestatus of the suit will be known at all times.
