In this first issue of the new year, I'd like totake the opportunity to give my personalreflection of the year 1985 on the basis of myfavourite top 10 singles. It is a subjective top10, only based on my own preferences andtherefore subject to discussions.

1985 didn't bring us many new musicaltrends, most of them came up in '84 andflourished the year after. The trend of coolja77;commercialized in '84 and has now becomefully common property. Apart from Sade,Matt Bianco was its most viable exponent.Preceded by 3 other hitsingles, More Than ICan Bear has proven to be the definite 'sleep-er' of the year; a song that refused to leavethe charts and that had a life span of at leasthalf a year. One cannot fail to notice its acces-sible melody interwoven in a smooth anddanceable production.

Another polished production, yet operat-ing in the disco/dance style, was Loose Ends'Hangin' On A String. Perhaps not a very origi-

nal melody, but enwrapped in such a magni-fied production (by Nick Martenelli), undoubt-edly one of the best trendsetting songs of thisstyle. The song gave way to a new trend, thatof the pop -polished disco production, infavour of the more funky and rough disco ap-proach of a few years back. A man like MickJagger, always very keen in adjusting himselfto the latest fashions, clearly profited from thedisco field and his solo single Just AnotherNight was straight forward, danceable andwith just the right production (Mick Jagger/BillLaswell- of Material fame).

And although the productions in 1985 be-gan to employ more and more advancedtechniques, an opposite tendency was per -

ceptible, a return to acoustic values. Groupslike R.E.M., Lloyd Cole and Icicle Works, toname but a few, rehabilitated the roots of thesixties and brought the acoustic guitar back topop music. The Big Dish is such a band anddespite the fact that their debut single BigNew Beginning failed to evoke any reaction,it was nevertheless one of the best singlesreleased this year; a glorious pop song in aclear production by Paul Hardiman.

Techno-pop seemed to lose grounds in'85, although Depeche Mode knew how toprevent the decreasing popularity of the syn-thesizer in its own right. Shake The Diseasehad an almost God-given melody that lin-gered long after hearing it. In my opinion thebest and most inspired song of the year.

The acoustic guitar was not the only wayto get away from the doomy atmosphere oftechno-pop. A group like The Cult found itsinspiration in a combination of sixties heroslike Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Withbrooding singles like She Sells Sanctuary andRain the group escaped their cult status andbecame one of the major revelations in theEnglish music scene in '85. Another new-comer were the dynamic and Fine YoungCannibals with their debut Johnny CameHome, full of immediate sparkling energy.Energy was also the keyword of the debut sin-gle of the English band Fruits Of Passion. Al/I Ever Wanted carried a charming innocencebut with such a persuasive power. that onecan hardly understand why no one in Europeever played this wonderful single.

Most of my favourite records this yearsomehow seem to come from England, stillthe country in the world that dominates musi-cal trends and fashions. However, nobodycan run away from the Boss. Although hisBorn In The U.S.A. album was released in'84, CBS issued Dancing In The Dark in '85and I think it was one of the best American sin-gles of this year.

Americans, as it appears, never forget thesunny sixties. A band that revitalized the L.A.pop sensibilities was Katrina & The Waves. This Capitol signing took everybody by sur-prise with the unassuming and cheerful popof Walking On Sunshine.

See you all next week with the usualchart -chatting.

Instead of the usual albums guide, this weekan overview of the best albums of 1985 on thebasis of my favourite Top 10 Album List. Forme personally, the best album of '85 camefrom a man with the looks of Presley and thevocal diction of Roy Orbison: Chris lsaakfrom Stockton, California. His debut album Sil-vertone combined the best elements of therich tradition of the American musicalheritage: blues, rockabilly, c&w and teenage -drama. His single Dancin' picked up some ra-dio reactions but for the rest he was somehowcompletely unnoticed by European radio.

However Suzanne Vega, another new ar-tist who released her debut LP in '85,received far more attention. Her self -titled al-bum marked a return to the singer/songwriterera and her folky pop songs evoked compari-

sons with Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones andLaurie Anderson. Her European tour trig-gered off good media reaction, establishingher as a definite talent to watch.

Another very remarkable solo album wasthe one by Sting. As pointed out in the lastyear-end issue, the likeable ex -Police singercame up with an album full of different musi-cal styles, one that crossed the rigid bordersbetween pop and jazz. An album that was afavourite for most of our European dj's aswell. An even wider versatility of musicalstyles was displayed on the Prefab Sprout al-bum Steve McQueen, the album that finallymeant the breakthrough of this talented andunique band. Although the album needs acouple of plays to appreciate its full value, it isclear that the band's vocalist Paddy McAloonis one of the best songwriters to emerge for along time.

Simply. Red have a very gifted vocalist inthe person of Mick Hucknall. Jazz, soul andpolished funk were mixed into a commercialframework and the LP already yielded thethree singles that broke all over Europe,Money's Too Tight, Come To My Aid andHolding Back The Years. Fusion at its best.

Madonna was a phenomenon in her ownright. She was able to attract a vast amount ofmedia coverage and it is no exaggeration toname '85 as the year of the Madonna Mania. Not everybody was so keen on the dominantrole she exerted this year, but it can't be de-nied that the Like A Virgin album is still a veryattractive Best Of album, containing one hit af-ter another.

The debut album of Katrina & The Waves

EURORADIO ALBUM SMAS

1

Sting -Dream Of The Blue Turtles- A&M

was also a 'hits' -album, albeit not reachingthe same levels of success as the former. Theband recaptured some of the lost innocenceof the 60's, sunny LA sounds and cheerfulMersey and r&b. Walking On Sunshine was agood single, but the LP had more; Que TeOuiero, a Mexican Trini Lopez -tinged tune; orthe raunchy Machine Gun. All done equallyconvincing.

From Katrina & The Waves it is not a bigstep to the all -female band The Bangles. They also recorded the track Going Down toLiverpool and the album, All Over The Place, was full of 60's influences as well. From TheMonkeys to The Mamma's And The Pappa's,from The Byrds to The Seeds.

Some may wonder if an album of BillieHoliday really belongs in a Top 10 album list. But if we come to think of the cool jazz trendthat came up in '84 and the fact that many ar-tists these days list as one their favouritesingers Billie Holiday (just think about the Ali-son Moyet cover That Ole Devil Called Love),it is abundantly clear that the MCA compila-tion The Legend Of certainly belongs in sucha list. Sixteen classic tracks of the best jazzvocalist ever. From the sad Don't Explain tothe optimistic Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do.

Aretha Franklin is one of those otherlegendary vocalists whose influence on otherpeople's styles is immense. Before she wassigned to Atlantic and made her break-through, she recorded for CBS and the SingsThe Blues album is an excellent and intimateset of jazzy and gospel influenced material.

deDMUSIC BOX STOPS V&DLegal action by the Music Box satellite music channel has forced Dutchretail chain V&D to withdraw from sale a bogus compilation album mar-keted and packaged under the "Music Box" name. The station saysit has no involvement in the LP, which was released without authorisa-tion from parent company The Music Channel. -Music Box's media head Maria Morgan says imitation is the sincerestform of flattery and that the use of the channel's name shows the extentof its influence in Europe, but adds: "It would be nice for our 3.5 millionEuropean viewers to know that if it says Music Box on the cover it'sMusic Box all the way through!"Ironically Music Box viewers will soon be able to do just that, becausethe station is currently negotiating with major record companies in theU.K. with a view to putting out its own compilation album early nextyear.

.><Secret Service - When The Night Closes In (Sonet) Sweden.publ. Cloudberry Songs. Master owner: Sonet, tel. 8-7670150.5 -Piece Swedish pop act with their follow-up to 'Let Us Dance Just A Little Bit More', one of oureuro-crossover picks this summer and currently getting good radio reactions in France at the mo-ment (licensed on Vogue). 'When The Night' is a winsome pop tune backed up with some finemelodic arrangements.

Moskwa TV - Generator 7/8 (Zyx) Germany.publ. Melodie Der Welt, tel. 69-287847. Master owner: Zyx, tel. 6436-4052.The follow-up to 'Tekno Talk', which sold over 30,000 maxis in Germany and even entered theUS Billboard Dance charts. Moskwa TV is a disco -cult project, set up by Frankfurter Talla. Post -doom industrial electro beats and a remarkable voice (reminiscent of Cy Cumin, of Fixx fame) sup-porting it.

The Monroes - Cheerio (EMI) U.K.publ. Sweden Music, tel. (Sweden) 8-143020. Master owner: EMI UK, tel. 1-4864488.This Bob Sergeant produced single has topped the Norwegian charts for one and a half monthand was 11 in Sweden. Watch out for it.

Gianni Togni - Segui II Tuo Cuore (CGD) Italypubl. Sugarmusic/Acquarello. Gene Loves Jezebel - Desire (Situation Two) UKpubl. Copyright Control. Master owner: Beggars Banquet, tel. 1-8709912.Indie sellers whose album The Immigrant was one of our faves on the Indie Route. The band, cen-tered around the Welsh twins Jay and Michael Aston, just returned from a lenghthy US tour andcame up with a sound, cast in the same mold as The Cult; arresting vocals against a powerfuldance beat. UK press describes them as 'dark and gothic'.

Master owner: Contact Fred Bestall at Big Time Australia,Telex, AA 71181 Bestall.Chrysalis UK picked up the rights to this former A&M act from Australia. Watch out for this talented4 -piece band with a brooding mix of 6T's guitar sounds, good hooks and the general psychedelic'underground' overtones. Single has undeniable pop appeal. UK already likes them and a bigcampaign on the Continent beginning of '86 follows.

The Adult Net - Edie (Beggars Banquet) UKpubl. Minder Music, tel. 1-2897281. Master owner: Beggars Banquet, tel. 1-8709912Captivating 6T's sounds in a production by John Leckie, about Edie Sedgewick, a protege ofAndy Warhol. Master owner: contact Mrs. Polly Schlodtmann at DGG, tel.40-3087441.German pop star who reached high levels of success during the days of the New German Wave(on the WEA label). Matta Bazar - Angelina (Ariston) Italy.publ. Ariston Music. Master owner: Ariston, tel. 2-9846974.High classy pop from a band that established their name a few years back with the beautiful track'Vacanze Romane'. TUNING IN

Dave Eastwood - Radio EssexDave Eastwood is the Senior Presenter atthe Southend-on-Sea based ILR station,Essex Radio. He hosts the breakfast showbetween 6-9 am.

"I only moved to Radio Essex a couple ofweeks ago and I find the breakfast showobviosly quite a change after my nighttime spot with Radio Luxembourg. I enjoythe fact that I'm now working for a localstation. I can go to the local discos, openfairs and know that I'm meeting the peoplewho actually listen to my music.I generally play two oldies (say one fromthe 60's and one from the 70's) to one cur-rent chart song. The format is in manyways not dissimilar to the old Laser. Weuse the Network charts, as do all ILR sta-tions. We club together to pay for It and thecomplete chart is broadcast by Kid Jen-son on Sundays.Radio Essex is a big soul station in theevenings. This could be because we areso close to London where the BBC has abig name for soul and we therefore tend tofollow similar trends.I like to play bright entertaining music toget the people up in the mornings but un-fortunately the amount of music I can playis limited because of the nature of a break-fast show. We have to include all the usualextras like traffic news".

ALEXANDRA'SNEWS

CORNERHi and Hello, for the first time this year. Dueto space shortage in the year-end issue therewas no room for this column. But here are mybelated 1985 reminiscences. Thinking aboutlast year leaves me with a lot of thoughts.Great things have been achieved. First of all,it was the year of the Youth, for the first timein history communist countries, like Russiaopened the iron curtain to let Western artistsperform. And of course WHAM! played Chi-na! * Musicians and artists have finally real-ized their influence and immense power onthe public, and have taken the responsibilityto do something about the injustice, consider-ing the large amounts of records released forcharity as well as benefit concerts. Musicianshave gathered together for the cause of help-ing US farmers, assisting the research onAIDS, concerts were organized to supportanti- heroin campaigns, and not to forget all

the other Ethiopian band aid projects! 1985also saw a good amount of record releaseswith a very strong political message likeSTING's Russians, Sun City against the mis-ery in South Africa and PAUL HARDCASTLEwith his excellent single 19 *

1985 also saw light to many popirock TVprogrammes aired throughout the wholeworld by satellite (think about the Prince con-cert in Syracuse). This was something in mus-ic's history which will be very hard, if not tosay impossible, to top! * Also many totallynew and never-heard-oThefore bands, havereached top chart positions with their debuts, like A -HA, being a real smasher, MR. MIS-TER, FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS, SIMPLYRED, etc. This year has also been a big onein terms of succesful reunions, and come-backs with a good example set by DEEPPURPLE and others like STARSHIP, UFO,BEACH BOYS, STEELY DAN, MAGNUM,HEART, AEROSMITH and many more, of theolder guard *

Solo projects have done well fromPOWERSTAT1ON, ARCADIA, ALDO NOVA,ROBIN GEORGE, PHIL COLLINS, TOMMYSHAW, DON HENLEY, PHILIP BAILY,MAURICE WHITE, STING, DAVID LEEROTH, FREDDIE MERCURY (who dedicatedhis album to his cat, which is an absolute plusfor me personally), MICK JAGGER, MIDGEURE a.o. BILLY IDOL has finally brokenthrough, as well as HUEY LEWIS & THENEWS, BRYAN ADAMS, MARILLION, RATT,MOTLEY CRUE etc. (who will be touring Eu-rope in the next couple of weeks, so here'syour chance!) *

But besides that, it definitely has been theyear of Ballads reaching no. 1. RememberFOREIGNER, PHIL COLLINS, COLLINS &MARTIN, REO SPEEDWAGON, SURVIVORetc. *

As for tours, everyone, from fairly new, toalready big names have. played the completeglobe for tours lasting for months and months. Some longer than a year, like the IRONMAIDEN Powerslave tour and TINA TURN-ER, BOWIE, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. Rio hasbecome important tourwise with their hugelyset up festivals *

Also this past year was definitely the oneof new talents. I have already mentioned A -HA but they aren't the only ones. Too many tomention: GO WEST, KATRINA & THEWAVES, DRUM THEATRE (who undoubtedlywill be huge soon, as I mentioned a fewmonths ago and mark my word here!), KING,PREFAB SPROUT, DEL FUEGOS, CHARLIESEXTON, PRINCESS, THE CULT and many, many more exciting newcomers. All this givesa very clear picture of the fact that the musicbusiness is getting really healthy and strongagain. And let's admit, isn't music the interna-tional language of understanding?* Leaving you with all my best wishes for1986, let's keep rocking.luv' Alexandra

LAUNCH OF PAN -EUROPEANDIGITAL VIDEO SYSTEM

by Willem

A tape -based digital video systemfor the 1990s to be developed on aPan -European basis by the conti-nent's leading electronics manu-facturers is already in the planningstages, according to Dutch multi-national Philips.

The project currently involvesPhilips itself, Telefunken, Grundig,Bosch/BEaupunkt, French hard-ware firm Thomson, and tapemanufacturers Agfa-Gevaert andBASE. Talks aimed at agreeing astandard for the new system havebeen under way for a year, andcould take another three years toresolve.

Initial development costs couldamount to 80 million Dutchguilders, but both the West Ger-man and French governments

HOOS

have reportedly agreed to providesubsidies, and Philips has submit-ted a request to the Dutch Eco-nomics Ministry for a similarsubsidy.

No technical details about thenew system have been revealed asyet, but Philips says it hopes to es-tablish it as a new global standard, and it does not rule out coopera-tion with Japanese hi4i makersduring the development phase."There is no doubt that Japanesemanufacturers are also working onnew video systems," says aspokesperson, "and it would obvi-ously be fantastic if we could worktogether with them on a systemwhich we feel sure will outdate allexisting formats."

TOTP - TWICE A WEEK?Top Of The Pops producers arenow eager to broadcast their showtwice a week. They have told theBBC's programme controllers thatno more studio time would benecessary as the programme is atpresent recorded well within the al-loted time. The decision thereforerests entirely with the schedulers.Speculation is rife that this bid togo out twice a week is related toThe Tube's own attempts to havetheir show repeated on Channel

Four, though this is itself still in thecards.

Top Of The Pops has until nowmade use of the Gallup charts tocompile their programme. How-ever it looks likely that a new or-ganisation will take over as Gal-lup's contract expires in April1987. Market Research organiza-tions are being asked by the BPI tosubmit ideas tor compiling the offi-cial record industry charts.

JAPANESE RESTRICTIONSLESS VIDEO RECORDERS TO EEC

by Peter Jones & Nick Robertsinne

Japan is to continue to restrict itsexports of video recorders to EECcountries in 1986, the country'sMinistry of International Trade andIndustry has announced, addingthat 1.5 million to 1.7 million units isseen as the "appropriate exportvolume for next year".

The decision to maintain curbson a voluntary basis is not expect-ed to affect an EEC Council deci-sion to lift the import tariff onJapanese VCRs from 8% to 14%,which at press time was regardedas imminent. The higher tariff is

designed to replace the EEC/MITIimport restraint agreements which

have been renewed annually forthe last three years.

In practice the slowdown in theEuropean market combined withthe dramatic increase in Japaneseinvestment in European -basedVCR manufacturing plants hasmeant that import numbers havebeen well below the agreed limits. The total for 1985, when the ceilingwas 2.25 million units, is estimatedat only about 1.8 million machines.

Japan says it will continue tomonitor export levels, and will con-fer with the EEC if they show signsof increasing beyond acceptablelevels.

RTL IN CANTONESERadio Luxembourg is learningChinese. The station reports it is toproduce two two-hour pop showsa week for the next 12 months inCantonese, following a deal withthe Chinese authorities.

The Chinese agreement followsLuxembourg's successful series ofprogrammes on British pop hitsand standards, which went out to apotential 50 million listeners in andaround the Chinese city of Canton.

As stated elsewhere on this page, the creation of a Pan -Europeanmarket really began to take shapein 1985. It was no longer an excep-tion for Continental artists to breakdown barriers. The list of Continen-tal European crossover produc-

6

tons printed on this page is an am-ple illustration of this.

Obviously not all of the men-tioned titles reached the same lev-els of success, some productionsonly hit one market outside theirhome country (e.g. T.X.T.'s Girl's

Got A Brand New Toy, charting inGermany and Italy), others only hitthe major countries of ContinentalEurope (Bad Boys Blue withYou're A Woman) and yet othersmade a complete European cross-over (Baltimore, A -Ha, ModernTalking etc.).

We intentionally left out Englishproductions because includingthem would make the list far toolong: England maintained itstrendsetting role in 1985 all overthe world.

The list is based on the recordsactually charting in the Hot 100 soit does not give an indication of allthose other European productionsthat, despite not making the Euro-pean charts, crossed borders andpicked up considerable mediainterest.

Starting with the Southern Eu-ropean countries, artists like Alice,Claudio Baglioni, Righeira, MafiaBazar, Loredane Berte and San-dy Marton (all from Italy) were ar-tists who not actually crossed overin terms of European chart posi-tions, but established their names

with the subsequent potential ofgrowing as major European acts.Spain had its share with Miko Mis-sion, Miguel Bose and Mecano, truly international stars whose pathEurotipsheet followed in 1985.

Apart from Mai Tai, Fox TheFox, The Limit and Video Kids, theTime Bandits were another solidmusical export product comingfrom Holland. They were howevermore successful outside Europeand had number one positionsDown Under and good reactionsin the US. The Dutch trio The StarSisters are still waiting for the finalbreakthrough abroad as well asDutch popular singer Gerard Jol-ing. Belgium had its talents in Lucvan Acker and TC Matic, definitelocal talents to watch.

Other European artists towhom Eurotipsheet expect thingsto happen include The Monroes(Norway), Stephan Eicher (Switzer-land), Mathilde Santing (Holland),Heinz Rudolf Kunze (Germany)and Jean -Jacques Goldman andJeanne Mas (both from France).

BREAKING DOWN(continued from page 1)

annual International Music AndMedia Conference in Montreux(see separate article in year-end is-sue) and become more involved inradio and television programming,to name but a few. A number ofEuropean countries have in themeantime planned a broadcast ofthe Pan -European award presen-tations for the end of February '86.Those of you who would like to joinshould contact EMR.

With the opening up of nationalmedia and the gradual build-up ofthe Pan -European market, Con-tinental European artists foundgreater acceptance outside theirown home markets. Cable andsatellite programmes started to de-vote more of their airing time to lo-cal artists; artists who were luckyenough to have their own video -clips got coverage on Europeancables and satellites, thereby en-larging their scope. Many of thesecrossover artists are spotlightedon the following pages in separatearticles. Germany especially wasthe supplier of a flow of crossoverartists and the examples ofModern Talking, Jennifer Rushand Sandra speak for themselves.Smaller countries like Austria con-tributed with Opus and Falco andeven the Norwegians had their na-tional pride in A -Ha, the most suc-cessful European production of1985. Italy and Spain continuedtheir role as suppliers of summerhits with Baltimore and Ivan as themost successful ones. And whowould have thought that threelovely ladies from Holland couldhave two successive top 10 sin-gles in the UK? All in all, it provesthat European produced records

are gaining in impact and theirshare on the European charts willonly increase in '86.

Despite this boost of Continen-tal European talent, the role of theUK as the continuous cradle oftalent cannot be put aside. TheEnglish language is still thelanguage for musicians to conquerthe world and the amount ofEnglish productions scoringworldwide has not diminished over'85. It is therefore more thanlogical that we have decided topresent a trendsetting award to anew English band, that crossedborders this year. The Londonsigning Fine Young Cannibalswere chosen due to their trendset-ting role. They add another dimen-sion to soul music, mixing theelements of The Clash with thoseof Sam Cooke; they are new, innovative and are likely to expandtheir influence in 1986.

When it comes to France, things are a bit more complicated.A major amount of French artistsstill sing in their own language, which makes crossing over amajor problem. However, a grouplike Rita -Mitsouko, despite notactually breaking outside France, deserves to receive the Pan -European trendsetting award dueto their original and fresh ideasabout music. They were majorsellers in France in '85 with thesingle Marcia Baila, but we expectthem to make inroads on theEuropean market in '86.

Eurotipsheet has always fol-lowed the paths of the Europeancrossover artists and we will in-crease our activities in that direc-tion in 1986.

TRENDSETTING AWARDS FOR EUROPEAN ARTISTS 1985

JENNIFER RUSHTHE POWER AND DESTINYShe is Germany's most successful singer thisyear with the melo-dramatic The Power 01Love reaching a number one position in theUK, the first Continental European artist tohave achieved such a feat. After hitting 1G rman charts, success spread over t Englen although initially very slowly. After

vering for 17 weeks in the U.K. it eventuallysieged. She was the first artist in England toreceive a platinum single (one million copies)and sales are now approaching the one anda half million mark.

After the phenomenal success in England.other European countries rediscovered its im-pact and the single experienced a re -birth inthe European Hot 100, as it hit the charts inFrance, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway

DOUBLE

and re-entered in Germany, Austria and Swit-zerland. The single even reached a highestposition of a number 3, which is the highestposition a German artist reached this year inthe Hot 100 (sharing the honours with ModernTalking's You're My Heart).

Success in Germany began in '84 whereshe had three consecutive top 20 hits with 25Lovers, Ring Of Ice and of course The PowerOf LOve. Her debut album Jennifer Rush solda staggering amount of copies and her follow-up Destiny was just as successful. In the Ger-man charts of December 17th, she even oc-cupied the first two positions of the Albumcharts!

Jennifer Rush was born in the U.S.A.where she enjoyed a thorough musical edu-cation, playing piano and violin. She startedher career in the U.S., but after moving toGermany her potentials where fully realised.

Sandra embrassing friend and producer Michael Cretu (Virgin)

THE CAPTAINS OF BLUEThe Captain Of Her Heart- one of our longtime favourites for Euro-Crossover, as ourregular readers are now certainly aware of. Afine melodic pop -easy listening song cen-tered around one repetitive theme. The songwas a hit in Germany and Switzerland andnearly made it in the Benelux. Even thoughseveral countries have still not released thesingle, it looks like they will eventually break in'86 The band is centered around Kurt Maloo(guitar and vocals) and Felix Haug (drums),both based in Zurich. Maloo and Haugformed a trio (together with a bass player)called Ping Pong and recorded four pieceswith Roxy Music member Phil Mazanera, songs that however were never released. Thetrio released their debut album in '82 andplayed at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

In September 1985 Double became a fourpiece band and released their debut albumBlue, an album with a friendly mix of moodyand jazzy pop songs.

Jennifer Rush (CBS), the destiny is hers

SANDRAPOP -DISCO IMPACTThe Greeks were the first to notice the charm-ing impact of the pop song Maria Magdalenaby the slender 22 year old German singerSandra. The song had a good Euro-feel, wasexcellently produced and a long time discofavourite during the summer months all overEurope.

The song turned out to be Germany's se-cond successful production of '85 in terms ofEuropean Crossover, as it climbed up to num-ber 13 in the Hot 100, only topped by ModernTalking's You're My Heart (which reached ahighest position of number 3). The follow-upIn The Heat Of The Night seems to be des-tined to follow the same course; in its fourthweek already up to number 18.

Those songs were arranged, producedand co -written by her friend, the Rumanianborn Michael Cretu who has also released analbum on his own for Virgin. Sandra was onethird of the all female disco band Arabesque.before she teamed up with Cretu.

FINE YOUNGCANNIBALSDYNAMIC AND YOUNGJohnny Come Home was one of the most sur-prising debut singles of '85; a nervous andjerky rhythm that supported a very soulful andblue voice. A song that immediately grabbedthe attention and established the band as aforce to watch for the future.

The band was formed from the ashes ofThe Beat, guitar player Andy Cox and bassplayer David Steele. After the break-up of TheBeat, Andy and Dave decided to form theirown band; all they needed however was asinger who could write lyrics to Andy andDave's tune. Their search took them to Ameri-ca where they listened to some 300 tapes, butThe States could not provide them with a newlead singer. On their return to the UK they fi-nally came across Roland Gift, singer in anamic band they are; crafted pop songs in thebest soul tradition. They have recentlyreleased their debut album containing newclassic songs like Funny How Love is, Like A

RITA MITSOUKOAVANT-GARDE DUORita Mitsouko - not as many believe a femaleartist, but the successful pairing of CatherineRinger's distinctive vocals with Fred Chinchinon guitar and keyboards. A definition of theirstyle leads to a myriad of musical vogues, acompelling mix of rock, classical, blues, newwave, latin rhythms and electric sounds. Theyare a totally autonomous duo both in arrange-ments and compositions and the diversity oftheir inspirations is as surprising as their stagepresence. Rita Mitsouko frequently emit animpression of oriental exoticism but the origi-nality of dress has also included plastic bags, masks and pyjamas.

Several months last year were spent tour-ing throughout France, Europe and as far asJapan, where they are very popular. On stagethey are talented and funny. Their music iscommercial, without being repetitive andmany see in the group the future of FrenchRock. Their quick rise to fame came aboutwith their avant-garde disco hit Marcia Balla,a hommage to the Argentinian dancer MarciaMoreno. A video produced by Philippe Gauti-er together with a lot of publicity all helped thesales rocket up and in no time the record wentgold,

BALTIMORAJUNGLE SOUNDThe European summer hit of 1985 was deli-vered by the Irish yet Italian based singer Jim-my McShane. Tarzan Boy had all the ingre-dients for an across-the-board smash; thetypical Italian 'Eurodisco' sound with the 'OhWoah Oh' jungle vocals and the innocent dis-co pop backing. Innocent or not, it was one ofthose records everybody could immediatelysing -a -long with. The Maurizio Bassiproduced single stayed for 8 consecutiveweeks at the top spot of the European Hot100, making it the longest number one runnerfor a continental European production. Apartfrom that, it was also the second longestcharting number one of '85, only topped by

IVANKEEP ON DANCINGAlthough the blond Spanish singer Ivan start-ed his musical carreer at the age of 17, realEuropean success took off in '84 whenFotonovela was no. 1 in Italy, Spain, France,Holland and Top 20 in Germany. MAI TAIDUTCH PRIDEThe conquering of the English charts byDutch female trio Mai Tai came right in themiddle of the recent upsurge of discoidancematerial. Acts like Princess and Amii Stewartwere all top 10 chart makers and Mai Tai wasamong them. It doesn't happen too often thatContinental European productions do well inEngland, not in the least Dutch productions. However, Mai Tai succeeded in bringing bothHistory and Body And SOLd in the Top 10 ofEngland.

A -HAA PLEASANT SURPRISEIt doesn't happen too often that a Scandinavi-an act, and in particular a Norwegian one, crosses the Atlantic and hits the top of theAmerican Billboard charts. It took A -Ha threemonths to accomplish this feat and soon afterEurope followed. The UK was trendsetting incharting the Norwegian trio but countries likeGermany and Benelux came next. After ex-actly two months the whole of Europe wascontaminated with this sparkling danceablepop tune and the single went to number onein the European Hot 100. It became a heavy discofavourite and upon the release of the follow-ups What Goes On and Body And Soul thevocals of the three ladies came to full power, making them the best soul outfit Holland cur-rently hag, And with tracks like Am f LosingYou Forever (a delightful ballad) and History,Mai Tai started to cross borders and becamea European sensation.

Early January sees the release of theirnew single Female Intuition (for U.K. therelease date will be February 3rd) and theywill also play at the Midem gala this month. Mai Tei - Dutch success story of '85 (CNA)
