Are You Interested in Peace & Justice? On Sunday, September 20, you are invited to join likeminded peacemak-ers for an interest meeting in forming a Peace Fellowship Ministry Action Team at FBC. This group will explore and promote ways to seek peace and justice in our relationships, our community, and throughout the world. The meeting will take place in room 214 at 4:30 p.m. If you have ques-tions, contact Dave McNeely at [email protected].

Women’s Ministry Group

The Women’s Ministry Group will meet on Monday, September 14, at 12 noon in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring items for the benevolence bags. Also bring a sandwich for lunch to enjoy with the other members. Mary Darby is the hostess for this month.

New in the Media Center

Thanks to a generous gift made by Tom O'Neal in memory of Amelia, we now have the complete HEARTLAND series by Bill Landry. This is a set of DVDs which will be displayed in the library so that anyone may check out several.

Because of the interest in the health of former President Jimmy Carter, we also have a large number of his books on display. They are in the large glass case. They may be checked out also.

Children’s Ministry Matters Becky Stout, Minister to Children and Families

During the month of September, we invite members of our congre-gation to nominate those who will serve as deacons for the next three years. Few things you do are more significant. To some extent, a church is no stronger than the deacons who spiritually lead the congregation; so selecting good deacons is extremely important. In some churches, deacons serve as an administrative board, over-seeing the work of the staff and the church’s lay leaders. That is NOT the role of deacons in our church. We entrust the administrative work of our church to capable committees and capable staff members. Instead of being administrators, we ask our deacons to be servants. Indeed, “servant” is the literal translation of the biblical Greek word translated “deacon.”

These deacon servants meet the needs of those in our church and our community. Each elected deacon is assigned to care for eight to ten families. The deacons minister to their assigned families in times of ill-ness, death, or at any time when their family members are struggling. Dea-cons also share times of celebration with their assigned families.

To put it simply, a deacon becomes the liaison between the church and their deacon families, helping to inform them and encourage them as they take part in the life of our church. If their family members begin to be less involved, good deacons check to see if there is a problem and they work to correct that problem if possible. To some extent, deacons serve along with the pastor, insuring that everyone in the church receives person-al, caring ministry.

What kind of persons should be nominated to serve as deacons? Most importantly, those nominated should be exemplary followers of Christ. That doesn’t mean deacons must be perfect, but it does mean they are active, dedicated members of the church. Deacons should be people who are compassionate and who are willing to become intimately involved with their families when needed.

Both men and women serve as deacons in our church. We feel that one’s gender is not nearly as important as one’s heart. Yes, deacons must be men and women with heart. Since deacons need to be familiar with our church and its members, we require nominees to have been members of our church for at least one year.

As your pastor, let me urge you to take seriously the task of nomi-nating deacons. In the last few years, many of you have assumed someone else would do the nominating causing us to get to the end of September with far too few nominees. Please take the time to pray and seek God’s will concerning those you will nominate to serve. Once God has led you to someone, ask that person if you may nominate them and then submit your nomination on a form provided in our church office.

Suppose you feel led to this kind of ministry but no one has nomi-nated you? Then, nominate yourself, or contact me and I will be happy to nominate you. In the end, how you get nominated is not important. It’s important that those who are willing are given the opportunity to serve.

Thank you, in advance, for taking this task seriously because, in the end, our deacons are a reflection to this community of the heart and soul of our church. Selecting them should be no small matter.

Our Extended Teaching Care interest survey card. Cards were distributed on Wednesday night and Sunday morning during Bible study and worship by our Children’s Ministry Committee seeking support for this ministry. Our ETC ministry is an extension of the Bible study hour for our pre-schoolers staffed by volunteers during our 10:45 worship service. As an extension of Sunday School, we seek to share the Bible truth and thought from their earlier lesson (provided for you) or review their take home ac-tivity sheet, enjoy a snack and free choice play or even a trip to the play-ground, depending on the age of the class. There is no planning or prepar-ing. In exchange you’ll receive smiles, hugs, the privilege of laying foun-dations of faith and gratitude from parents. Last year we began asking par-ents of preschoolers to serve at least 6 times a year. Many of them serve more. We need your help to complete our staffing needs so that our pre-schoolers are adequately cared for and our parents may worship more fre-quently. Would you consider serving in this ministry? If so, please sign up on our ETC bulletin board located in the church entrance just outside the media center. Questions? Please contact Becky.

Wednesday Night Supper Volunteers Needed

Please consider signing up to help on a Wednesday Night Supper team. Several volunteers are needed to fill the vacancies. You only serve three times a year and you will receive a free meal. Please call the church of-fice or Betty to volunteer. Thank you.

Community Bible Study

The Community Bible Study will begin on Wednesday, September 9, at 9:30 a.m. in room 301. The books need to be ordered, so please let me know as soon as possible if you will be attending (475-4122). The book costs $12.99, but again I will ask you to pay $15 if you do not mind. The extra money will help with childcare. If this cost is a problem for you, please let me know and something will be worked out. Paula Lowe has agreed to be responsi-ble for childcare again so let her know as soon as possible how many children you will be bringing (548-4849). Please plan to join us and bring a friend!

Old Time Saturday, October 3

Mark your calendars for Jefferson City’s Old Time Saturday, October 3. The event marks the tradition of Saturday market days that took place in the early 1900s. This year marks the 30th year! Our children’s ministry would like FBC to have a presence downtown during the festival and is planning to offer children’s activities and more! This is an excellent out-reach opportunity. If you or your committee would like to participate in this event, please contact Becky. In addition we are asking for members to volunteer for a two hour block of time. More details to come. Meanwhile, come to the office to sign up and indicate your interest.
