BULLDOG BASEBALL2014 GAME NOTES

SERIES HISTORYThe Bulldogs will meet up with the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana for the 38th time in the history of both teams Friday night to open the 2014 season. This will mark the first meeting between the two schools in 15 years, as Southeastern La. holds a 21-16 advantage over LA Tech and has won two straight dating back to the 1999 season. Most recently, the Lions got the best of the Bulldogs with a 5-4 victory in 1999 in Hammond.

SCOUTING REPORTAt the plate The Bulldogs return nine position players with starting experience in 2014, but it’s the 15 newcomers that will need to step up in order for Tech to succeed. Led by senior Tyler Ervine, who hit .275 last season, LA Tech hitters are looking to bounce back after post-ing a .246 team batting average a season ago.

Southeastern La. returns the majority of its infield, led by the team’s leading hitter, sophomore Jameson Fisher, who will see time behind the plate for the Lions. Fisher hit .315 in 2013 with three home runs, 27 RBI, 11 doubles and eight stolen bases. Last season, the Lions hit .263 as a team in 60 games.

On the moundJunior right hander Phil Maton returns as the stalwart of the Bulldog pitching staff and the lone starting pitcher returning for LA Tech in 2014. Maton was a first-team all-WAC selection last season after leading the WAC in strikeouts (89) and posting a 2.70 ERA, which was second-best among all league pitcher. Look for seniors Luke Giddens (LHP) and Richie Navari (RHP) to get the start Saturday and Sunday for the Bulldogs.

Southeastern will counter with the return of three right handers in Andro Cutura, Tate Scioneaux and Kyle Keller. Those three started a combined 23 games for the Lions last season and posted ERA’s of 5.67, 3.72 and 1.38, respectively. The pitching staff as a whole posted an impressive 4.11 ERA in 60 games in 2013.

TEAM NOTESTHE LOVE SHACK IS A LITTLE OLD PLACE WHERE WE CAN

GET TOGETHER

TECH TO BATTLE NCAA REGIONAL CONTENDERSOverall, the Bulldogs will face off against a total of four teams that participated in postseason play in 2013, with Texas A&M, Florida Atlantic and UTSA making appearances in NCAA Regionals last season, while Rice advanced to the Super Re-gionals before falling short against NC State on the road. To make things tougher, the Bulldogs will have to face off against all four of those teams in three-game series on the road.

2014 C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO HATTIESBURGThe 2014 Conference USA Championship will return to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the fourth time in the league’s his-tory. Southern Miss also hosted the 2009, 2005 and 1996 C-USA Championships at Pete Taylor Park. The Champi-onship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play and the format returns to two double-elimi-nation brackets, with a single-elimination championship game. Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field has been the home of Southern Miss baseball since 1984, when the facility was opened. “The Pete” as it is nicknamed, has seated more than a million fans who have entered its gates. During that time, the Golden Eagles have been regularly among the top teams in the nation in atten-dance.

CLOSE CALLS COST BULLDOGS IN THE WIN COLUMN IN 2013

Throughout it’s history, the Bulldogs have held a significant advantage at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, also known as The Love Shack. Since it’s opening in 1971, Tech has posted a 752-410-1 home record, good for a .647 win percentage. The 23 home wins in 2011 were the most under head coach Wade Simoneaux. The Bulldogs 2014 schedule features 29 home games at The Love Shack this season, including a total of eight three-game series against top tier opponents.

11 one-run losses3 one-run wins

Over the course of the 2013 season, it was almost guaranteed the Bulldogs would come within inches of victory late in games, but that wasn’t always a good thing for Simoneaux and his team. In 14 one-run games played last season, the Dia-mond ’Dogs won just three of those contests and racked up 11 losses along the way. And once the game reached the sixth inning, the Bulldogs continued to struggle, posting an 0-30 record when trailing teams after six innings of play.

PAUL HARRIS: JACK OF ALL TRADESWhile the majority of Louisiana Tech Bulldog fans are used to seeing quarterback Paul Harris take snaps on the grid iron, the redshirt senior, who just finished up his final season on the football team, is trying his hand at something slightly different this offseason. Following the 2013 football season, the Baton Rouge native decided to give baseball a shot and met with Coach Simoneaux regard-ing a spot on the team. Harris earned a tryout as a left-handed pitcher and Simoneaux immedi-ately found a place for him on the roster. Although Harris has not played competitive baseball since his high school days at Tara High School , he will more than likely see time out of the bullpen for the Diamond ’Dogs in 2014.

TEAM NOTES

BULLDOGS SOLID DEFENSIVELYIn 2013, the Louisiana Tech Diamond ’Dogs posted the fourth best fielding percent-age for the sixth time in school history. With a .962 team fielding percentage, LA Tech’s solid defense committed 78 errors, just four more than last year’s team, who is third all-time for best fielding percentage by a Bulldog team. Junior first base-man Tyler Ervine led the way with just three errors committed over the course of the season and a .993 fielding mark in his first season at LA Tech.

FRESH BLOOD: 14 NEWCOMERS HIGHLIGHT 2014 ROSTERWhile the Bulldogs do return nine seniors and six juniors who were here a year ago, head coach Wade Simoneaux added 14 newcomers to this year’s roster. Five juniors transferred to Louisiana Tech from junior colleges, and the addition of 9 freshman help make up the 2014 team. LA Tech also welcomes the return of two players that received redshirts last season in junior outfielder Conner Tobias and freshman outfielder Pierce Spangler.

TEAM NOTES2013 PITCHING STAFF BEST SINCE ’93 SEASONOver the course of the 2013 season, Simoneaux and the Bulldogs relied on a qual-ity pitching staff that was put in place over the last few years through thorough development. With that, LA Tech pitchers recorded a 4.48 team earned run aver-age in 56 games, making the 2013 season the most successful for any Bulldog staff since the 1993 season when Mike Kane’s staff posted a 4.44 ERA. The staff was led by junior Phil Maton and seniors James Ferguson, Trevor Petersen, Caleb Dudley and Jamie Gilley. All five pitchers accounted for 13 of the Bulldogs’ victories last season.

MATON RETURNS, CONTINUES TO BUILD IMPRESSIVE CAREER

Louisiana Tech baseball had three players drafted on the third and final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft with Sam Alvis, Ryan Gebhardt and Taylor Terrasas being selected by professional clubs Saturday.

Three Bulldog players are the most Simoneaux has had selected in the draft since the 2011 season when Tech sent three players to play professionally from that season’s roster.

With Alvis, Gebhardt and Terrasas being picked in last season’s draft, head coach Wade Simoneaux has now coached a total of 21 student-athletes that have been selected in the

Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft over the course of his 12-year tenure at Louisi-ana Tech.

Junior infielder Ryan Gebhardt was drafted as the 14th pick in the 17th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while junior left handed pitcher and outfielder Sam Alvis was selected as the sixth pick in the 21st round by the Miami Marlins. Senior infielder Taylor Terrasas wrapped things up for the Bulldogs after being picked

29th in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds. All three Bulldogs who were drafted signed

profressional contracts to wrap up their careers at Louisiana Tech.

TRIO OF BULLDOGS SELECTED IN 2013 MLB DRAFT

Right hander Phil Maton came into 2013 with plenty to prove after shining in his first season with the Bulldogs and earning Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors. As a sophomore, Maton picked right up where he left off and was named a first team all-Western Athletic Conference honoree after a year where he led the league in strikeouts (89) and was second best among WAC pitchers with a 2.70 ERA. Maton was 6-6 on the year and held opposing hitters to a .216 average throughout the campaign. Over the course of the season, the sophomore right hander posted a career-high in strikeouts in a single game (11) and also pitched two complete games for the Bull-dogs. His career ERA is now 2.81 in 33 total appearances on the mound.

Maton’s Career Stats

Entering his 12th season at the helm of the Louisiana Tech baseball program, Wade Simoneaux has turned the Bulldogs into perhaps one of the more

prolific offensive teams in the south. In 12 seasons with the Bulldogs,

Simoneaux has compiled over 275 wins and has turned J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park into a true home field advantage as LA Tech has built a .686 winning percentage since 2006.

Over the course of the 2013 season, Simo-neaux and the Bulldogs relied on a quality pitching staff that was put in place over the last few years. With that, LA Tech pitchers recorded a 4.48 team earned run average in 56 games, making the 2013 season the most successful for any Bulldog staff since the 1993 season.

Sophomore Phil Maton picked right up where he left off in his freshman campaign a year ago and led the Western Athletic Conference in strikeouts with 89, while post-ing a 2.70 ERA in 2013, which was second best among all WAC pitchers. Senior pitcher Trevor Petersen also made his mark on the season after moving up to seventh place all-time in the Louisiana Tech record books with 68 career appearances on the mound.

Simoneaux has also orchestrated the renovation of J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park. The coaches and players have done almost all of the work as the facility has seen many changes and improvements.

A new fence was installed and recently the team renovated its locker room, along with adding a new coat of paint on the stadium. The field is in its best shape in years due to the many hours Simoneaux, his staff and players have put in working on it.

More than 400 new chairback seats were installed prior to the 2008 season, along with a new scoreboard and a new press box.
