Two Decades of Sports Excellence Since 1998, the Richmond Sports Awards have been presented annually to

recognize and celebrate the achievements of outstanding Richmond community

athletes and the leaders who make sports possible. The 2018 Awards, presented

in April 2019, were the 21st year in which the Awards have been presented. To

date, 460 awards have been presented to 353 different Richmond sportspeople,

organizations and teams.

The inaugural Richmond Sports Awards were dedicated to the memory of

Robert A. McMath, a pivotal civic figure in the development of Richmond, and

especially its sporting community. The Awards have been presented each year

by the Richmond Sports Council, the City of Richmond, and the Richmond

Review/Richmond News.

SIMPLY THE BEST Richmond Sports Awards honours top performances of ‘98

It only seems fitting the inaugural Richmond Sports Awards, recognizing the best performances by local amateur athletes in 1998, be held at the new Robert A. McMath secondary school.

‘Bob’ McMath passed away in July 1996 at the age of 81 after spending 42 years in public office (first as a school board trustee and later city councillor) where he shared a keen sense of community. He also had a passion for athletics, most notably soccer, and was made an honorary lifetime member of the Richmond Youth Soccer Association.

His enthusiasm for sports led to the joint use of facilities we enjoy in Richmond today. His simple desire to ensure children had plenty of space on which to play resulted in the school board and city sharing maintenance costs and facilities.

Today, we pay homage to his efforts by dedicating these awards in his memory.

The following athletes, coaches and teams have been nominated in various categories and will be honoured at the first annual Richmond Sports Awards celebration Thursday at 7:30pm at

McMath. Each of the 20 nominees will also be eligible for the Sportsperson of the Year Award.

The Richmond Sports Awards are being presented by The Richmond Review, City of Richmond and Richmond Sports Council with additional support and sponsorship by Fox Insurance Brokers Ltd., Canton Wun-Tun Seafood House, Riverport Business Park Inc. realtor Jody Copple, McMath secondary, and Richmond Trophies.

Richmond Sports Awards Recipients 1998 - 2018

The Richmond Sports Awards are presented based on achievements in each calendar year following nominations from the community. The awards are presented at a dinner and awards ceremony held in April/May of the following year. For example, the awards for 2018 were presented in April 2019.

The Richmond Sports Awards are presented in different categories to recognize athletes at different stages of their sports careers and the different types of contribution of sport leaders. The athletes, teams and leaders receiving awards all come from Richmond and its sport organizations.

The proceeds from the Awards dinner, now held at RA McMath Secondary School, are donated to Richmond KidSport, to fulfill its mission of eliminating the financial barriers to sport participation, ‘So ALL Kids Can Play’ and participate in the sport of their choice.
