Lot: 1Herbert 'Joseph' Cribb (1892-1967). A stone carving for theEric Gill Studio Workshopdepicting Christ on the cross, andwith figures at his feet, inscribed'AMOR MEUS CRUCI-FIXUSEST' in red text and with lead'nails', the reverse inscribed'H.J.Cribb 1927', 30cm x 30cm.'Joseph' Cribb was recruited byEric Gill as his apprentice in 1906whereupon he was taught lettercutting and masonry skills by hismaster. Following the First WorldWar on his return from France hejoined Eric Gill amongst others insetting up the Guild of St Josephand St Dominic on DitchlingCommon. He became a prolificworker of stone carvings anddecorative stone work and thereare many examples of his workstill in existence. Some examplesof his work can be seen inDitchling Museum and his lifeand works are well documented.Provenance: The vendor is thegranddaughter of Lawrence Cribbwho was Joseph Cribb's brotherand who also worked for Eric GillEstimate: £10,000.00 -£12,000.00

dated, 123cm x 57cm. The panelwas inherited by the currentowner and through the line ofdescent can be traced back to1945 when it was salvaged from'The old Rectory' at Elton inNorthamptonshire. It was rebuiltat that time by Messrs Kelley &Co, Finsbury, London.
