Dr. Michael Ungar, PhD, is a family therapist and professor of Social Work, and also the Canada Research Chair in Child, Family and Community Resilience at Dalhousie University. He is among the best known writers and researchers on the topic of resilience in the world. His work has changed the way resilience is understood, shifting the focus from individual traits to the interactions between people and their families, schools, workplaces, and communities.

In 2012 Dr. Ungar was the recipient of the Canadian Association of Social Workers National Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contribution to clinical work with families and communities.

“Resilience is more than an individual’s capacity to overcome adversity. It is also the result of how well individuals, their families, and communities work together to help vulnerable individuals navigate their way to the resources they need for wellbeing and whether those resources are made available to them in ways that are meaningful to them.” - Dr. Michael Ungar

Simple Solutions Won’t Solve Children’s Complex Problems

People are better able to cope with adversity when they get what they need from others. To experience resilience, a child’s complex problems need complex solutions.

When working with children, youth, and families who experience the multiple challenges of trauma, addictions, mental health problems, and social marginalization (e.g. poverty, family violence, racism, and other factors), mental health services can have a greater influence when they focus less on problems and more on the factors that promote resilience.

If we want to look after children with complex needs and get our interventions right, we’re going to have to think not just about the child’s individual needs but also about the many different aspects of their environments that make children more resilient. In this conference, Dr. Ungar will show that resilience is a process that is nurtured by service providers who match their interventions to their client’s needs and who can make those services available and accessible in ways that people experience as culturally and contextually relevant.

This conference will present a social ecological approach to service delivery and design that makes mental health and addictions services strengths-focused and resistance-proof, drawing on the capacity of a client’s friends, family, teachers, and community as potential sources of support. Participants will learn how to identify and encourage seven factors associated with resilience:

1. Supportive relationships2. A powerful identity3. A Sense of personal control4. Agency and power5. Social justice and fair treatment6. Belonging, purpose, and spirituality7. Cultural rootedness

The goal of this two-day conference is to uncover pathways to resilience in very challenging contexts using a multi- systems approach. Participants will have an opportunity to talk about examples of effective services from their own workplace, as well as find solutions for clients who may be difficult to engage. Several themes will be discussed with regard to service design, including coordination of services across “silos”, continuity of services over time, the need for cultural sensitivity, and how services can show they are effective.

Resilience isn’t something inside us. It is something made possible by the opportunities given to us to do well.
