     Its called a “tweet”

    Max. 140 characters

     Following and being followed

     Think about it as micro blogging

  • Elements of a tweet

     A tweet can simply be text under the 140 character limit, directly originating from you

     Can tag someone in a tweet with the ‘@’ and their twitter account name

     Can retweet someone else which includes ‘RT’ or ‘MT’ and a link to their twitter account

  • Elements of a tweet

     Can include a link, common practice is to

    use link shortening tools to fit within the

    140 character limit

     Can include a picture which is then

    saved with your account and can be

    browsed through in a twitter gallery

     Can use hashtags which then become

    linked/clickable

  • Hashtags

     Use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces)

     Categorize your Tweets and help them show

    more easily in Twitter Search

     Clicking on a hashtagged word in any

    message shows you all other Tweets marked

    with that keyword

     Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet

    – at the beginning, middle, or end

     Hashtagged words that become very

    popular are often Trending Topics

     Examples:

     Follow Friday or #FF is a weekly tradition where

    users recommend people that others should

    follow on Twitter

     University of Waterloo accounts use

    #uwaterloo to mark their tweet as something

    of interest for the uWaterloo community

     Tips:

     Don’t use more than 2-3 hashtags per tweet

     Check out the Trending Topics on the left side

    of the screen and join in to have your tweet

    show up on the hashtag search results page

  • Tips for staying within 140 characters

     Shortforms

     However, when working on behalf of the University, use full words and proper grammar and syntax unless there is no other option

     Ampersands!

     URL shortener

     Several options available and easily found online, comes with social media management tools such as HootSuite and TweetDeck

     Waterloo is coming out with a URL shortener as well

    Guidelines:

    Be transparent

    Be respectful

    Be thoughtful

    Think before you post

     Tone:

    Friendly, conversational,

    open

     Check often

     Update often

    Depending on the purpose of your account, at least once but as much as 4-6 times a day

     Respond to questions quickly

    Aim for within 24 hours

    Respond publicly or indicate that you will be responding privately

    Respond to the good and the bad
