EASY BATTERY TEST

Apparently, all those expensive battery testers are made by the same company that makes batteries or this instruction would be on the back of each package. This works with triple a, double a, c and d batteries. Pickupthebatteryverticallywiththenegative(flat)sidedownanddropitfromabout2incheshighontoahardflatsurface.Ifitstandsupright, it’s a good battery and if it falls over, it’s dead. The reason this test works is that, as battery dies, the chemistry slowly changes and produces Hydrogen gas. This creates pressure and causesthebatterytobounceandfall. It’sthesamereasonthecasingcan crack open and leak. That’s it! Told you it was easy.

Where Did Parachutes Get Started?By Ginger Lane

Parachutes didn’t just magically appear one day. They were designed with baby steps to the technology we have today. Here’s a little history and the how and why gets very interesting. Louis-Sebastien Lenormand (1957 -1837)coined the phrase parachute and got the idea from watch-ing a tightrope walker using 2 parasols for balance. He originally designed it to help occupants of burning build-ings to be able to escape unharmed. And, as much as we have distaste for animal testing, it has apparently been done for generations before us. He originally tested his parachute with animals. Hemadeajumpfromatreewithtwomodifiedumbrellas and then in 1783, he is credited for making the firstwitnessedparachutejumpfromtheMontpellierob-servatory.Itwasa14ftparachutewithawoodenframe. In1911,astheskiesbegantofillwithflyingma-chines, a prize of 10,000 francs was offered to anyone that developed a safety parachute for aviators. FranzReichelt (1879–1912)wasalsoapara-chute pioneer. He had been granted permission to do an experiment using dummies wearing parachutes thrown from the Eiffel tower but then showed up that day wear-ingtheparachutehimself.Hewasknownasthe‘flyingtailor’ and jumped to his death while testing the wearable parachute that he designed. Although there were no viable parachuting solu-tions for use in airplanes when Reichelt began developing his suit, by the time of his death a successful parachute jump from a plane using a non-fixed canopy had already taken place in the United States at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis Missouri. As a parachuting pioneer, Reichelt is largely forgotten; his legacy has taken the form of a cau-tionary tale: while he may appear as a footnote in para-chuting histories, he is a mainstay of books and websites that cite pointless or stupid deaths. A mild-mannered man was tired of being bossed around by his wife so he went to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist said he needed to build his self-esteem, and so gave him a book on assertiveness, which he read on the way home. Hehadfinishedthebookbythetimehereachedhishouse. Love Is In The Air!By Ginger Lane

And, apparently, it was in the air 73 years ago when my aunt Helen met Travis Cook. They dated(onandoff)foraboutayearandthenmar-ried. She tells that she married him because he had a great car!

They’ll be celebrating 72 years of marriage on February7th!Iaskedherwhatthesecrettoalong and happymarriagewas. Iwaswaitingwith to hear thewisdomof time. Maybe shewould talk to me about soul mates and never dyingeternallove.Iwaitedtohearabouthow

their romance moved Heaven and Earth.

Then, she told me she felt that the secret of their long marriage was kind of like what Billy Gra-ham’s wife, Ruth, said when asked had she ever considered divorce she replied, “Divorce No!MurderYes!”And, Helen added that she justdidn’t think murdering anyone would be the right thing to do, either, so they stayed together.

She laughingly told me that during the time they were courting that my Uncle Travis would bring her candy and flowers, but when Valentine’sDaycameaweekafter theymarried…..noth-ing. Again, she laughed and said she couldn’t really remember if he did or not!

Then, she got serious and said they trusted each other. Early on Travis was in the service and theyspentovertwoyearsapartand24monthstotally separated while he was overseas. They had3children,4grandchildren,4greatgrand-children and lived a close knit family life. They have celebrated successes together and weath-eredsomeprettystormytimes….together.

She did say that 68 years ago, they bought the bed they still have today. She told me if that bed

had ever fallen apart, she felt sure her marriage would have too. The bed is holding together and so are they!

So, here is the summation of a long and hap-py marriage. Get married, send him away for about 3 years, don’t get a divorce or kill each other and buy a really sturdy bed that will last an eternity!

HAPPY 72ND ANNIVERSARYTO BOTH OF YOU!

The Council House in San Antonio, TexasCouncil House Fight

Warning: This article is true Texas history and unfortunately contains violence

TheCouncilHouseFightwasaconflictbetweenRepublicofTexasofficialsandaComanchepeacedele-gationwhichtookplaceinSanAntonio,Texas,onMarch19,1840.Themeetingtookplaceunderatrucewiththepurpose of negotiating peace after two years of war. The Comanches sought to obtain recognition of the bound-aries of the Comancheria, their homeland. The Texians wantedthereleaseofTexianandMexicancaptivesheldby the Comanches. The event ended with 12 Comanche leaders shot to death in the Council House, 23 shot in the streets of San Antonio, and 30 taken captive. The incident ended the chance for peace and led to years of hostility and war.Battle TheComanchearrivedinSanAntonioonMarch19. Expecting a council of peace, the 12 chiefs brought women and children as well as warriors. They were dressedinfinerywiththeirfacespainted.TheComanchechiefs at the meeting had brought along one white cap-tive,andseveralMexicanchildrenwhohadbeencapturedseparately. The white captive was Matilda Lockhart, a16-year-old girl who had been held prisoner for over a yearandahalf.Accordingtowitnesses,includingMaryMaverick,whohelpedcareforthegirl,shehadbeenbeat-en, raped and suffered burns to her body. Her face was severelydisfigured,withhernoseentirelyburnedaway.MatildainformedtheTexiansthatmorethanadozenab-ducted whites were available for release and that the Co-manche chiefs had decided to ransom them. The Texians believed this was against the conditions for the negotia-tions which they believed stated that all abducted whites had to be released before the council. The Comanche of course had a different view, since the Chiefs and Bands not in attendance were under no obligation to release any-one, as they had never agreed to anything. The talks were held at the council house, a one-story stone building adjoining the jail on the corner of Main Plaza and Calabosa (Market) Street. During thecouncil, theComanchewarriorssatonthefloor, aswastheir custom, while the Texians sat on chairs on a platform facing them Lockhart had informed them that she had

seen 15 other prisoners at the Comanche’s principal camp severaldaysbefore.ShemaintainedthattheIndianshadwanted to see how high a price they could get for her, and that they then planned to bring in the remaining captives one at a time. The Texians demanded to know where the other captives were. The Penateka spokesman, Chief Muguara, responded that the other prisonerswere heldby differing bands of Comanche. He assured the Texians that he felt the other captives would be able to be ran-somed, but it would be in exchange for a great deal of supplies,includingammunitionandblankets.Hethenfin-ishedhisspeechwiththecomment“howdoyoulikethatanswer?”TheTexianmilitia entered thecourtroomandpositionedthemselvesatintervalsonthewalls.WhentheComanches would not, or could not, promise to return all captivesimmediately, theTexasofficialssaidthatchiefswould be held hostage until the white captives were re-leased. Gary Anderson declares inhisbookTheConquestOfTexas:EthnicCleansingInThePromisedLand,1820-1875thatsuch“confusion”be-tweenNativeAmericanmenandwomenwasconvenientto the Texians, who used it as an excuse to kill women and children. As combatants it was fair that the Texians fought back.TheTexianswerenot“confused”.AccordingtothereportbyCol.HughMcLeod,writtenMarch20,1840,ofthe 65 members of the Comanches’ party, 35 were killed (30adultmales,3women,and2children),29weretakenprisoner(27womenandchildren,and2oldmen),and1departedunobserved(describedasarenegadeMexican).Seven Texians died, including a judge, sheriff, and an army lieutenant, with ten more wounded. Thedayafterthefight,asingleComanchewom-an was released to return to her camp and report that the Comanche prisoners would be released if the Comanche released the 15Americans and several Mexicans whowere known to be captives. They were given 12 days to returnthecaptives.OnMarch26,awhitewoman,Mrs.JohnWebster, came into town with her three-year-old.She had been a Comanche captive for 19 months and had justescaped,leavingher12-year-oldsonwiththeIndians.Twodayslater,abandofIndiansreturnedtoSanAntonio.Leaving the bulk of the warriors outside the city, Chief Isanaica(HowlingWolf)andoneothermanrodeintoSanAntonio and yelled insults. Ofthe16hostagestheTexiansweredeterminedto recover, 13 were tortured to death as soon as the news of the Council House Fight reached the outraged Coman-ches.Thecaptives, includingMatildaLockhart’s6yearold sister, suffered slow roasting among other tortures. Onlythe3captiveswhohadbeenadoptedintothetribe,and by Comanche custom were truly part of the tribe, were spared. This was part of the Comanche answer to the breaking of a truce. OnApril3,whenthetrucedeadlinehadended,another band of Comanches appeared again to bargain for a captive exchange. They had only three captives with them, including Webster’s son Booker, a five-year-oldgirl,andaMexicanboy.Bookertoldthemthattheothercaptives had been tortured and killed when the Comanche woman had returned to camp with news of the Council House Fight. These three captives were returned after their adoptive families agreed to give them up. The Comanche captives were moved from the cityjailtotheSanJoseMission, thentoCampCookeatthe head of the San Antonio River. Several were taken into people’s homes to live and work, but ran away as soon as they could. Eventually, all of the Texians’ Coman-che captives escaped.
