FROM THE ESTEEMED LEADING KNIGHT
The lodge had an eventful January. We look forward to the meetings and Super Bowl Party in February. I would like to remind everyone that the Thursday Elks meetings, the first and third Thursday of each month, are open to all Elks members. Please attend and get involved in the lodge.
We are looking for officers for next year. PLEASE step up and help. We have SEVERAL positions that need to be filled. I will work to minimize the time that must be devoted to each position. The first nomination of officers for the next Elk year is the first meeting in February.
Please contact me with any comments, questions or concerns. I look forward to serving the Lodge over the next year.
Fraternally Submitted, Brad Guske, Leading Knight
FROM THE ESTEEMED LECTURING KNIGHT
Are you ready for some Football. Come to the Lodge for our Superbowl Party on Sunday – Feb.5th. Lodge opens at 1 pm. As in the past few years we will be hosting veterans from the Sepulveda VA. The Lodge will be providing sandwiches (pulled pork, sliders, tuna, etc). but are asking for pot luck dishes to go along with them – appetizers, salads & deserts.
Our New Year’s Eve Party was a blast. Thanks again Earl and Donnie for the wonderful Prime Rib and Salmon dinner. A special thanks to our lovely Bouchard girls for serving.
Fraternally, Jan Dappen Lecturing Knight
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Valentines Day: This holiday’s roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration. So which St. Valentine this early pope intended to honor remains a mystery. According to the catholic encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints named Valentine.
One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Terni, and a third St.Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb, 14.
Scholars believe that St.Valentine of the holiday was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman Claudius. At this stage, the actual ends and the mythic begins. According to legends Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies but was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death.
Have a beautiful Valentines. Have a wonderful dinner with candlelight and flowers
Fraternally, Karen Perriseau, Chaplain
