CANBERRA CAPITAL CITY TOUR 2018 – Grade 5/6

Monday 18th June to Friday 22nd June 2018

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

(PACER)

Students from our school will soon be undertaking an

education tour of the national capital. Students will be given

the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational

programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the

national capital as part of the Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of

the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the

school upon completion of the excursion.

CHESTERFIELD FARM EXCURSION

On Thursday, May 10th, Foundation children bundled up in their warm weather gear, raincoats

and gum boots and boarded the bus to Chesterfield Farm! The children were very excited to

experience life on a working farm and become real farmers themselves! With our trusty guides

we explored the farm. The children loved spending time in the quiet animal nursery and patting

the soft, fluffy baby animals. The tractor ride is always a highlight and the children excitedly

pointed out the animals they could see during the bumpy ride! Feeding the big animals was a

particular thrill and the children enjoyed seeing some unexpected animals, like a camel and a

deer!

When it came time to have a go at milking the cow it was lovely to see the children take such

care to ensure they were following the farmers instructions and being very gentle, and they

were so excited to see the milk filling up the bucket! Special mention must go to Cow Milking

Champion, Miss Luu, who defeated Mrs McDonald in the cow milking competition, well done

Miss Luu!

It was wonderful to see all the children really embracing farm life and ‘having a go’ at all the

activities. Our visit to Chesterfield Farm provides opportunities for such wonderful ‘real world’

learning for our children and they have been very keen to write about their experiences and

explore new knowledge gained from our visit to the farm.

Many thanks to our fabulous helpers who came to the farm with us, Mrs Peta McDonald and

Connie – thank you!

Parent Information

Bounce Back!

If you are resilient you are able to cope reasonably well with difficult situations and things that go wrong and then

‘bounce back’. Throughout life children will need skills and attitudes to help them to bounce back. They will encounter

everyday challenges such as making mistakes, falling out with a friend, moving house or school and losing in a sports

competition.

The Bounce Back! Wellbeing and Resilience program teaches children the skills and attitudes to help them become

more resilient. It uses literature as a starting point for discussions and follow up activities.

Bounce Back! stands for:

Bad time don’t last. Things always get better. Stay optimistic.

Other people can help if you talk to them. Get a reality check.

Unhelpful thinking makes you more upset. Think again.

Nobody is perfect – not you and not others.

Concentrate on the positives and use laughter.

Everybody experiences sadness, changes, hurt and setbacks sometimes.

Blame fairly – how much was because of you, others or just bad luck?

Accept things you can’t change.

Catastrophising exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst picture.

Keep things in perspective. It’s one part of your life.

You can help your child by helping us to reinforce the key messages they are learning with Bounce Back!
