Bedford Municipal Court Receives Technology Grant

Presiding Judge Brian J. Melling proudly announces that the Bedford Municipal Court has been awarded a $36,000.00 technology grant which was offered by the Supreme Court of Ohio under the Ohio Courts Technology Initiative.

The grant will be used to purchase document imaging software which will be integrated with their current court software. Implementing the software will enhance the administration of the Court, and provide constituents with improved levels of service. Additionally the Court will see financial savings as the off-site storage needs will be reduced significantly over time.

Judge Brian J. Melling is pleased to have received the technology grant.

“I commend Clerk of Courts Tom Day for initiating and overseeing the imaging project and further thank Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor for awarding us the grant”.

The Bedford Municipal Court serves the cities/villages of: Bedford, Bedford Heights, Bentleyville, Chagrin Falls, Chagrin Falls Township, Cleveland Metropolitan Parks, Glenwillow, Highland Hills, Moreland Hills, North Randall, Oakwood, Orange, Solon, Warrensville Heights and Woodmere.

State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley) today announced the passage of legislation aimed at expanding voter access and convenience by allowing Ohioans to register to vote online.

Senate Bill 63, sponsored by LaRose, would authorize the Ohio Secretary of State to implement a secure online voter registration system. The new system would give Ohio voters the option of submitting a simple form online while maintaining the option of registering to vote by paper.

Ohio voters can update their voting address online, but new registrations must still be completed by paper under current law. From 2010 to 2012, estimates show, Ohio

could have saved as much as $3 million dollars from processing registrations online.

“Online voter registration is a significant step forward for Ohio,” said LaRose. “State and local governments will achieve major cost savings while maintaining the accuracy of voter records, improving convenience and reducing the chance of fraud.”

The online voter registration system would instantly cross-check with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ internal database, preventing fraud by verifying citizenship and other necessary information.

County Executive Announces $500,000 USEPA Grant Award to Cuyahoga County and the Northcoast Brownfield Coalition

Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish announced that the Cuyahoga County Department of Development, on behalf of its Northcoast Brownfield Coalition partnership, will receive a $500,000 USEPA Community-Wide Brownfields Assessment coalition grant to continue its work on environmental assessments leading to urban brownfield clean-up and revitalization throughout the County for 2015 and beyond. The County’s Department of Development leads a regional coalition of the City of Cleveland, the First Suburbs Consortium, and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, known as the Northcoast Brownfield Coalition (NcBC), and manages the coalition’s Community Assessments Initiative (CAI) program for brownfields redevelopment.

“We are extremely pleased to be the recipient of this major $500,000 USEPA award to be utilized for our Community Assessments Initiative program,” said Interim Director of Development Nate Kelly. “Revitalization of our underutilized assets in land and property is a top priority of County Executive Budish’s administration. Not only are these sites eventually remediated and redeveloped for the creation of jobs, but environmental justice is served by eliminating deleterious health effects for our communities and their residents.”

The coalition was formed in 2003, and the County has been facilitating the assessment program work since 1994. The nationally recognized CAI program serves to “jumpstart” the redevelopment of contaminated brownfields through professional certified assessments of environmental conditions (such as Phase I and Phase II reports), which enable end users to determine highest and best use for the subject properties and eventually redevelop them. To date the CAI program’s brownfield assessment activity has invested over $4 million to assess 165 sites and a total of 4,200 acres, leading

to numerous sites being remediated and cleaned for redevelopment and an estimated 9,300 jobs retained or created in Cuyahoga County.

CAI assessment projects leading to major clean-ups, redevelopments, and job creation have included: The Flats East Bank, the Miceli Dairy expansion, the Fairmont Creamery mixed-use redevelopment, the Great Lakes Towing Shipyard expansion, the

Baker Electric Building, and MidTown Tech Park. Strategically-based target areas to receive attention through this $500,000 Coalition Assessments grant will include the Opportunity Corridor, the East 185th Street Corridor and various sites within the inner-ring First Suburbs.

In its press release announcing the competitive 2015 national awards recipients, the United States

Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) explained its selection of grants to 147 communities across the U.S. It stated that “this investment will provide communities with funding necessary to assess clean up and redevelop contaminated properties, boost local economies and leverage jobs while protecting public health and the environment”.

July 4th ParadeThe Cities of Bedford and Bedford Heights

are hosting our 32nd annual Independence Day Parade on Saturday, July 4th beginning at 10:00 a.m. The parade starts at Columbus and Washington Street, proceeds east on Columbus Road to Perkins Road, disbanding at Bedford Heights City Hall.

If your group or organization is interested in being a part of the parade, please call Bedford City Hall at 440-232-1600 or obtain an application from www.bedfordoh.gov.

Nothing is better than a good night’s sleep.

Think about how good you feel on those mornings when you wake up alert, jumping out of bed ready to go! That sets you up for a really great day.

Research has shown that people who chronically don’t get enough sleep are gen-erally less healthy, less effective at work or at school, and less happy in their lives. Be-ing sleep deprived also makes you less alert, so you’re more prone to accidents of various types, including automobile accidents.

But many of us don’t sleep well. Many people wake up sluggish in the morn-ing, having to drag themselves out of bed, already thinking about when they can get the next nap. There are many possible causes of this, but two of the most common are snor-

ing and sleep apnea. We all know

what snoring is. It’s that annoying noise

caused by your tongue or uvula (that piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat) partially blocking your windpipe. As air goes past it, it vibrates, making that rat-tling sound.

Sleep apnea is the more severe, dan-gerous cousin of snoring. It occurs when the tongue or other structures in your throat ac-tually block the windpipe completely while you sleep, causing you to suffocate. Usually

you partially wake up after a few seconds, but just enough for

you to reposition yourself to get air. Then you fall back to sleep and it happens all over again … and again … and again, sometimes hundreds of times each night! All this can happen without you waking up enough to know it. Then you wake up thinking “I just slept for 7 hours, why am I still tired?”.

The most common remedy offered by medical doctors is something call CPAP (continuous positive air pressure), which in-volves a machine pumping air into your nose through a mask. It works for a lot of people, and in the most severe cases, it is only op-tion (besides surgery). But some people find that the mask, the tubes which restrict move-ment, and noise from the machine make it uncomfortable and hard to sleep with.

About now, you’re probably saying “what does this have to do with my teeth?”. Well, dental researchers have developed a number of small, comfortable, inexpensive devices that you can wear in your mouth at night to deal with this problem. These de-vices work by slightly repositioning you lower jaw so that your tongue can’t block your breathing airway. At Dodson & Asso-ciates, we can help determine which of these devices is best to help you.

So if you’re not sleeping as well as you’d like to, either because of your spouse snoring or your sleep apnea; if you wake up not feeling refreshed, if you feel tired all day long, if you’re not performing as well as you’d like on your job (or your teenager at school); if you want to wake up feeling great, energized, and ready to conquer the world ... Talk to your dentist!

Dr. Regina Vincent Clark believes many people are lost and do not hear God when he speaks to them and gives them a wake-up call. Upon realizing this scenario, she woke up from her own slumber in 2010 and started writing “Answering God’s Wake-Up Call: A 100 Day Journey With the Holy Spirit” (published by Xlibris).

This inspirational book shares the day to day experiences of Clark’s personal interactions with the Holy Spirit. Complete

with scriptures that have helped her get through life’s challenges, “Answering God’s Wake-Up Call” can also be used by readers as their meditational guide.

“This book will appeal to readers because of the honesty, the truthfulness and the easy style of writing,” says Dr. Clark. “Others have many of the same experiences I have had. By sharing just 100 days of my life’s ups and downs, it should be an inspiration for others to keep moving forward, build a relationship

with God, trust God, know God, praise God and get to know the Holy Spirit and his role in your life.”

Dr. Clark considers herself as someone who serves as a voice of vision and peace, a voice of hope, an instrument of encouragement and a trumpet of truth. The 100 day journey she shares with readers in “Answering God’s Wake-Up Call” represents her new journey with the Holy Spirit. She hopes that through this book, readers will also discover a

wonderful, l i v e l y , interactive, hope-filled

relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Cleveland Janitors Join Nationwide Rally Commemorating 25th Anniversary of “Justice for Janitors” Strike

On June 19, members of Service Employees International Union Local 1 joined a rally to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Justice for Janitors movement.

This year, janitors from Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Akron and Toledo, rallied in Cleveland, with the support of community groups, including Jobs with Justice and the Ohio Student Association

and other labor organizations, including the North Shore AFL-CIO, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Justice for Janitors. The event was at the Free Stamp downtown and featured the stories of janitors, both past and present, whose lives were impacted by the work of the union since 1990.

Justice for Janitors began in 1990 when janitors in Los Angeles, having

seen decreased wages and poor working conditions, began a series of actions culminating in a strike on June 15, in Century City, where the 400 janitors faced off with police. The marchers were beaten back by dozens of police officers, and thirty-eight of the wounded marchers were arrested. The aftermath of this protest spurred nationwide organizing of janitors, and helped make lasting gains.

This year’s event offered perspective on the gains of the last 25 years and look to the future of the organization’s work to further those gains.

Watch Local 1’s twitter (twitter.com/SEIULocal1) and Facebook (facebook.com/SEIULocal1) feeds for live photos of the rally.

Red Cross urges blood donations to maintain summer blood supply

The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood in the weeks surrounding Independence Day to help ensure a sufficient blood supply now and throughout the summer.

Many summer activities, such as vacations and travel, cause frequent blood donors to be less available to give during the summer. However, hospital patients still depend on volunteer donors to receive lifesaving transfusions – the need for blood does not get a vacation.

To encourage more people to donate around Independence Day, all those who come out to donate blood July 2-6, 2015, will receive a Red Cross embroidered hat, while supplies last.

Eligible donors are encouraged to choose their day to make a difference. Donors of all blood types – especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative – are needed. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
