From Our Pastor

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Third Commandment: “Remember to Keep Holy the Lord’s Day.”

Go to Mass on Sunday! This is what we often think of when we hear the Third Commandment. And

indeed, worshipping God on Saturday evening or Sunday is a large part of this commandment

for us as Catholics. However, it goes much deeper and it speaks about the very ordering of our

lives.

As we read in the Book of Genesis, God created the world in six days. On the seventh

day He rested. God rested! So why can’t we? In our busy world today with its many

commitments, diversions, and distractions, many of us are not finding time to rest. Built into

the very law of God is that we are to dedicate one day of the week to Him. It is to be a day of

rest but also a day of prayer – a day quite simply to be a human being and not a machine.

Sadly, we often forget this today.

For the Jews, the Sabbath was the last day of the week – Saturday. The Sabbath was to

be a day of memorial for Israel’s liberation from bondage in Egypt. The Jewish people today

take their day of rest on Saturday and it remains a day of prayer and worship. Because Jesus Christ rose from the

dead on Sunday and because the Holy Spirit came upon the Church on the Sunday of Pentecost, the early

Church began to celebrate the Lord’s day on the first day of the week - Sunday. This has remained the practice

for most Christians from the very beginning of the Church.

For Catholics, we begin to fulfill the Third Commandment by going to Mass on the weekend. Unlike

other Christian communities, we as Catholics are morally obliged to go to Mass every weekend. Why is this so?

Simply because we believe that Jesus Christ becomes really and truly present on the altar at every Mass. If we

are able to receive Communion, we are nourished with His Body and Blood. Why would we ever want to miss

such a miracle of God’s love? The reason it is a sin to miss Mass on the weekend can be found by asking

ourselves what is more important? What are we putting in its place? Sometimes illness, weather, ignorance, or

necessary work excuses us from this Sunday obligation. Laziness, a hangover, or sports does not. As Catholics

we begin the Sabbath day in the most beautiful way possible - by worshipping God.

Sunday also is to be a day of rest. If possible, make it a day for family and friends. Avoid shopping

because our shopping often causes other people to have to work. Some individuals who provide necessary

community services such as police, hospital, and fire protection must work on Sundays. Those who provide for

the necessary rest and entertainment of others often have to work on Sundays. So do priests! Whatever our

duties in life, we ought to endeavor to make Sunday look different from the other days of the week. In this way

Sunday can become a day of prayer and relaxation that enlivens our entire week.

As Christians we should mark out our day of rest and dedicate it to the things of God. Although

increasingly challenging today, let us give glory to God on this the day that He rested. Let us worship Him at

Mass and serve Him in those we love and care for. And let us keep holy the Sabbath Day.

May God Bless You.

New Credo Faith Formation Kindergarten Class…

Are you interested?

There has been a request to possibly add a Credo

kindergarten class to the existing Credo Faith Formation

Program. At present, children in grades 1-12 are assisted

through the program. The desire is for the class to possibly

begin yet this year. However, it is important for the staff to

determine if there would be enough interest from families

in establishing a kindergarten class. The students would

most likely meet on Wednesdays in the Gehl Center from

4:30 pm-5:45 pm (along with the students in grades 1-6).

If you are a family that would enroll your child in the class

either this year or in the future, we need to know as soon

as possible. Please contact Connie DeMeuse at

[email protected] or 227-8546 to respond.

Please feel free to share your thoughts, comments, or

suggestions. Thank you.
