22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Nothing that enters one from outside

can defile that person; but the things

that come out from within are what

defile." In the days of Jesus, this issue

was about performing empty external

rituals of cleanliness instead of purify-

ing the heart. For most of us, the issue

is probably a bit different. Our fixation

on externals is not so much with reli-

gious prescriptions and practices; in-

stead, our daily obsession tends to be

with appearances in general. In our me-

dia-saturated culture, we are extremely

tuned in to how things look. We are

trained to respond to current fashion

trends in clothing, hair, makeup, and

accessories. Even bodies, cars, houses,

and landscaping all fall into the realm

of highly marketed images. The risk for

us is to be so concerned with having the

right "look" on the outside that we fail

to consider what's happening on the

inside. Life is about more than what we

have or what we parade around for oth-

ers to see. As human beings we are a

unity of body and soul, and if we ne-

glect our souls, then we are neglecting

the fulfillment of our human nature. We

need to make sure we are not like the

Pharisees in today's reading who were

too concerned with outside appearanc-

es. Jesus tells us in response to them

that "from within people, from their

hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity,

theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice,

deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy,

arrogance, folly. All these evils come

from within and they defile." This list

makes a good starting point for some

personal meditation on our interior life.

Let's ask ourselves, "Which of the be-

haviors on this list threaten to defile my

soul?" Then, let's ask the Holy Spirit to

help purify us of that spiritual ugliness

so we can appear beautiful in the sight

of God. © LPI

All are invited to attend as we at Saint Anthony Parish gather in the Rosary Garden for the Memorial. We will congregate after the 8:30 am Mass on Saturday, September 12, 2015.

The vigils held throughout the U.S. commemorates the more than 55 million children who have lost their lives to legal abortion since 1973 to remind our society of the humanity of the unborn child. Please bring your rosary and if desired, a plant or flower.

Rachel's Vineyard Post-Abortion Retreat

Questions of the week: Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Your heart must be full of faith.

Reread today’s second reading from James. As you hear or read this reading, what strikes you in it? What single word or phrase jumps off the page for you?

Question for Adults:

Based on this reading from James, what is the sign in one’s life that faith is present?

Question for Youth:

Jesus warns about the things that will lead us away from God. What tempts you away from being the preson that God created you to be?

Question for Children:

What steps can you take to more humbly welcome Christ into your heart?

Additional Actions:

Take a look at the Ten Commandments –given so that we can live in love and peace with God, with one another, and will all of creation. Choose a commandment as your special focus for action this week. Review at the end of the week how your choices affected your actions in faith this week.

World Day of Prayer For the Care of Creation

Pope Francis has designated September 1st to be World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This day of prayer will take place on September 1st, annually. The Pope asks us, in unity with our Orthodox brothers and sisters, to pray and ask God’s forgiveness “for sins committed against the world in which we live.” In his recent encyclical, Pope Francis said ‘living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue it is not an optional or secondary aspect of our Christian experience.” As the insert in last week’s bulletin invites us to do, we must all examine

our personal and family impact on the environment and assess what we can do to help protect and care for all of God’s creation. The Parish as a whole, including the School are stepping up recycling measures and examining our consumption. We all have a part to play in the careful stewardship of natural resources and we take that responsibility seriously. On Tuesday September 1st, let us all pray for guidance and prudence in our daily living. That we may be more cognizant of our impact on the beauty of God’s creation, and that we may all grow in wisdom about how to safeguard the earth’s present population and for future generations.

Your parish needs more people to serve during the Mass you attend. We need more Altar Servers, Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Communion, Choir members, Cantors, Greeters and Ushers. Everyone has a gift—would you offer yours in service to your church? Contact: Roy Roberts, [email protected]; 863.858.8047

An Invitation to Serve at Mass

Have you joined us at The Table?

The Saint Anthony Table is an online community reserved especially for registered parishioners of Saint Anthony Parish.

This online community offers another way for you to connect with the parish by connecting with other parishioners. The Table also has a “Prayer Wall” feature—which you hear mentioned at the Prayers of the Faithful at every Mass in our parish—this is a place where parishioners can seek prayer, and can offer prayer for others.

We recently canvassed opinions from people who use the Table and we

thank those who took the time to offer their thoughts.

Some of the feedback on the Table is as follows:

“I like the opportunity to pray for others and I have also requested prayer for my loved ones.”

“This has been a valuable tool for me. It has uplifted me many times, especially when in need of prayers.”

“I enjoy every aspect of [The Table]… I enjoy the Florida Catholic, Catholic News and the Vatican News. Lots of information.”

Saint Anthony Catholic School

Each year at our school we endeavor to keep our tuition costs as low as possible, so as to make the dream of Catholic education a reality within reach for our Parish

Families. The tuition we charge represents a significant financial sacrifice for families who choose to send their children to our school, and we are grateful that they prioritize a faith-filled education for their family.

The tuition levels do not however reflect the full cost of education and like most other Catholic schools (and even public schools), we rely on ongoing fundraising support from our school families, and our parishioners.

Ways you can assist our school:

By making a generous monthly donation in the School Envelope you will find in your offertory envelope packet.

By including St. Anthony Catholic School in your Will/Estate Planning.

By sponsoring a child’s tuition for a year, or more.

By becoming involved in the School Endowment Fund Committee and help manage its growth to ensure sustained income to support tuition assistance.

By making a donation to the school in memory of a loved one.

Pictured with Fr. Val are founding Parishioners Mr. Richard and Mrs. Serena Eastling who recently renewed their Wedding Vows and received a special blessing. This couple have served Saint Anthony Parish since it was established and still serve it today by bearing witness to the Sacrament of Marriage they have offered to each other for the past 70 years. Mr. Eastling still actively serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion - remarkable for a nonagenarian! Our thanks and prayers to Mr. & Mrs. Eastling for the sacrifices they made to help build the Parish we enjoy today, and for your ongoing example of faithful stewardship. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Update

Celebrating 70 Years of Marriage

Pictured is the Prayer Shawl Ministry

Leader Dolores Earegood with some of the 18 new ministry members learning about the pattern they use, and in some cases learning how to knit. This ministry was borne out of a need that Dolores herself identified when she was homebound recently with a broken foot. The gesture of providing a prayer shawl to those who are homebound is intended to help them

feel the love of Christ directly from our parish, through the love and prayers of those who knit the shawls for them.

If you have an idea of a ministry that you think would benefit our parish, and would like to explore setting that up, take a leaf out of Dolores’ book and start inquiring about how to make that happen. Feel free to contact Ministry Coordinator Debbie André

A Stewardship Moment

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time In the reading from the letter of St. James we are urged to be “doers” of the Gospel, not just listeners. Being a “steward” of God’s Word is a matter of listening to the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into action in our day-to-day lives.

And whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel, and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and poor.

Because of your generosity our Diocese is able to support Catholic Charities of Central Florida, Hope CommUnity Center, and our schools in the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic.

Our sincere thanks to the households below who have made their commitment to the 2015 our Catholic Appeal. If you have made your commitment and do not see your name, please understand that the Diocese is processing pledges for over 90 Parishes and it may take some time for more recent pledges to show up on the reports that we receive. We will up-date this list weekly.

St. Anthony Goal for 2015 is $131, 444. To date, 449 households have made pledges in the amount of $119,882.26 with payments received to date totaling, $102,333.27. (Figures as of 8/21/2015)

We are still $31,110.73 away from reaching our Annual goal for Our Catholic Appeal.

Thank you to those of you who have paid in full, or are faithfully making your pledge payments. If you have not yet donated to this year’s appeal, we respect-fully ask that you do so now in support of our diocese and our parish.

On September 12, 2015 we will welcome Bishop John Noonan to St. Anthony as he celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation with 33 members of our Parish.

Confirmation is very closely linked to our Baptism. Just as in Baptism, these individuals will receive God’s gift of grace and will also be sealed with the Holy Spirit. They will be sent forth, strengthened, to witness their faith to the world.

As with any of us Baptized and Confirmed in the Catholic Faith, these gifts are given freely to us by God, but it is how we respond to that gift that truly marks us as Christian disciples.

All parishioners are invited to join us at 10am on Saturday September 12, as we make this a joyful community celebration.

Please also remember to pray for our Confirmandi as they complete their preparations and take this momentous step in their faith journey:

Janelle, Jordan, Leonardo, Jessica, Maritza, Rodolfo, Juan, Tomas, Abigail, Logan F., Hailey, Nicolas, Kelsey, Saren, Steve, Olivia, Janixa, Jayda, Roberto, Garth, Logan N., Denise, Isabella, Jason, Victor, Jossy, Cristina, Elaina, Tyler, Victoria, Thomas, Matteo, Ryan.

Is Your Marriage Breaking Your Heart?

Mon., Aug. 31: 1 Thess 4:13-18; Luke 4:16-30 “He has sent me … to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” On a visit home, Jesus is given the honor of proclaiming the scriptures. The “year acceptable to the Lord” about which Isaiah wrote is also a called a Jubilee Year, not unlike the Year of Mercy Pope Francis has announced, a year that will begin in just a few months on the First

Sunday of Advent. There is so much to do. We could acknowledge a Jubilee with little more than an announcement from the pulpit and a bulletin article or two. But if we make it more, if we make it a year during which we create a difference in the lives of those who need mercy, then when this year comes to a close, we can say with Jesus: Today this Y ear of Mercy is fulfilled. May it be so, Lord. Tues., Sept. 1: 1 Thess 5:1-6, 9-11; Luke 4:31-37 They were astonished at his teaching, because he spoke with authority. First Thessalonians is the oldest writing in the New Testament, and the image of Jesus returning “like a thief in the night” was already lodged in the tradition. Paul seems to find that parable a little uncomfortable: “But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for that day to overtake you like a thief; all of you are children of the day!” Jesus doesn’t care what anybody thinks — and the people love him for it. His authority is so compelling that the demons fall down and the poor rise up faster than even Luke can track. Luke, Paul’s companion, loves showing the Master at work, nonstop, just like the Apostle. Jesus, only you! Where else would I turn for the Gospel? Wed., Sept. 2: Col 1:1-8; Luke 4:38-44 We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you. Colossians is a love song to God’s goodness, as embodied in the local church community. And it’s all the more poignant if (as many believe) Paul wrote it from prison! Jesus also resists any attempts to box him in. In quick succession, he “rebukes” a fever, “rebukes” demons, cures whoever’s brought to him, sneaks off at dawn to “a deserted place” to pray, and springs forward to “the other towns” when the folks try to make him stay. Luke, thought to be the only gentile author in the New Testament, had to be impressed with a kind of hero unknown in the histories of Rome. Jesus, take me with you; I promise I won’t lag behind!

Thurs., Sept. 3: Col 1:9-14; Luke 5:1-11 Memorial of Gregory the Great, pope and doctor of the church Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch. Paul falls all over himself praising the Colossians. They are “filled,” they are “fully,” they have “all,” they know “light,” they know “glory.” It’s like the impossible catch of fish that overwhelms Peter when Jesus sends him out into “deep water” after a whole night without a nibble. “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man,” Peter says. Oh no, Peter, we’re just getting started! “They left everything and followed him.” Peter is a pretty big catch himself. Have I had a similar experience — running on empty until, without warning, a full wave of grace sweeps over me? Jesus, take me with you, for I am a sinner! Fri., Sept. 4: Col 1:15-20; Luke 5:33-39 In him all fullness was pleased to dwell. Many scholars do not include Colossians among Paul’s personal letters, but the Holy Spirit’s voice is unmistakable. No council could improve on its creed: “Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, for in him were created all things in heaven and on earth.” Jesus takes a more down-to-earth approach, with homespun parables about a bridegroom, a seamstress, and some wineskins. But the truths in these stories are no less transcendent: They tell of the total transformation of our world by God’s love. Can I see even the most ordinary reality as a window into the heart of God? Let me make a few parables of my own, from my own experiences. Whatever is handy can take me beyond the stars. Dear Lord, show me yourself here, there and everywhere I look. Sat., Sept. 5: Col 1:21-23; Luke 6:1-5 God has now reconciled you in the fleshly Body of Christ through his death. In Colossians, we have toured the cosmos — and we’re still in Chapter 1. Jesus is taking a stroll with his apostles, who absentmindedly pluck little nuggets of grain. But this is a big problem for the Pharisees because, you know, it’s the Sabbath. All absolutes are local. Jesus defends the apostles by recalling how David and his men, on a forced march, ate the showbread in the temple that only the priests may eat. Never mind that David’s situation was an emergency during war and the apostles are just enjoying a diversion; the Sabbath does not negate God’s love for us. For God, human beings can be the Holy of Holies. Jesus, feed me always with your grace and your truth.

Next Sunday: September 6, 2015 Isaiah 35:4-7A;

Psalm 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 James 2:1-5; Mark 7:31-37
