He determines to remain silent, but he cannot because the desire to speak the Lord’s name is “like a fire burning in my heart.” Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2 Paul tells the Christians to make sacrifices to avoid the trappings of the times, and to do God’s will. Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus tries to make his disciples realize that by following him, they will endure suffering, degradation, and death. He tells them that they must deny themselves and take up the cross in order to be his disciples. Hurricane Relief Thanks to a grant received from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, The Diocese of Trenton continues to operate its “Diocesan Hurricane Relief Fund” from which assistance is distributed through our Catholic Social Services agencies, and in particular our St. Vincent De Paul Society, to assist individuals and families directly affected by Superstorm Sandy. If you are a Union Beach resident in need of assistance and were affected by Superstorm Sandy, please phone our SVDP Society at 732-264-8132 and leave a message including your name, address, and phone number. We will contact you to setup an appointment to discuss how we might be able to assist you. COME AND JOIN THE HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society is committed to helping its members grow in holiness through devotion to the most Holy Name of Jesus. Members of this fraternity are called to be leaders, to cleanse themselves in the sacrament of penance, strengthen themselves with the most Holy Eucharist, nourish their souls on Sacred Scripture, increase their desire for divine love through prayer, and lead their families, friends, and coworkers to Christ Jesus by their acts of charity and piety. If you are a Catholic over the age of 18, please consider joining the Holy Name Society and join us at our re-organizational meeting on Thursday Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall – join your prayers with others so that the Most Holy Name of Jesus can be venerated – our prayers will be heard!
