OLPH History, Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Core Values
Matthew 28:18-20: The Commissioning of the Disciples
Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go,
therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always,
until the end of the age.”
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish has a rich, black cultural history. From its formation in 1920, the Black
Catholics of Anacostia contributed to its development and growth through their sacrifices of time, talent, skills and funds to provide a parish plant of their own. Thus, the
uniqueness of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish places it in a leadership position to interact with other Black and non-
black parishes in utilizing the gifts of Black spirituality through music, dance, education, and special action.
MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, therefore, acknowledge that our Pastoral Mission is to proclaim Christ and teach the “Good News”, to worship and bear witness in the community, to love and serve as Jesus commanded, and to preserve and share our rich Black heritage.
VISION STATEMENT: “A Roman Catholic church that is actively visible in the Community, shares its spirituality through fellowship, and is committed to serving God.”
CORE VALUES BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: We will always speak the truth, respect the opinions and roles of all parishioners, and value each person, always maintaining Christian charity in all of our actions.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH: We will seek to increase the understanding of our Catholic faith and expand our spiritual growth by participating in and supporting charitable and spiritual activities, in addition to attending Mass.
STEWARDSHIP: We will become involved in church activities and commit our time, talent and treasures.
INCLUSION: We will be open and inviting by extending ourselves to all by sharing in our parish life; thereby, reaffirming our vision of being actively visible in the community.
LEGACY: We will preserve our rich Black cultural history by respecting the past, continuing in service and faith in the present, and committing to the future of OLPH.
Quote for the Week
"Few of us use our minds to the maximum. We may be physically
strong and active but mentally lazy."

Grandparents are a delightful blend of laughter, caring deeds, wonderful stories, and love! Heavenly Father, may Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of your Son, Jesus, be an everlasting model for grandparents. Your Wisdom and Word are eternal, meant for all generations. Help grandparents, we pray, as they pass on the rich traditions of the faith to their beloved family members, especially their grandchildren. We are all your children. Help us to know you better each day, ultimately leading us, with our family members, into eternal life with you.
Monday, September 14th:
Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
God our Father, in obedience to You, Your only Son accepted death on the Cross for the salvation of mankind. We acknowledge the mystery of the Cross on earth. May we receive the gift of redemption in heaven. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Through the mystery of Your Cross and Your Resurrection, save us O Lord!. Amen. Tuesday, September 15th:
The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the seven great sorrows which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospels or through Tradition. On this feast day, we are invited to reflect on Mary’s deep suffering: flight of the Holy Family into Egypt; the loss and finding of the child Jesus in the Temple; Mary's meeting of Jesus on His way to Calvary; Mary's standing at the foot of the cross when our Lord was crucified; her holding of Jesus when He was taken down from the cross; and then our Lord's burial.
Wednesday, September 16th: Feast of St. Cornelius, Pope, Martyr and St. Cyprian, Bishop, Martyr Thursday, September 17th: Memorial of Saint Robert Bellarmine was an Italian Jesuit and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was canonized a saint in 1930 and named Doctor of the Church, one of only 36. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation.
10:30 am LOC Food Pantry – 3P Saturday, September 19th: Memorial of St. Januarius, Bishop and Martyr. He is the patron saint of Naples, where the faithful gather three times a year in Naples Cathedral to witness the liquefaction of what is claimed to be a sample of his blood kept in a sealed glass ampoule.
Sunday, September 20th: 10:00 am Mass

Monday-Friday 8:00 am A Prayer That Can Be Offered At Communion:
“My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I
desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be
separated from you. Amen.”
The greatest gifts we can give to each other,
is to pray for one another. 8:00 am Weekday Masses are available for you to offer
prayers for your family, friends and yourself. Contact the Rectory for available dates. If you previously
requested a date on Saturday or Sunday, your date will be moved to the closest day.

Children learn to trust God's mercy and forgiveness
when they experience forgiveness from those closest to them. We hope that we model God's love and
forgiveness within our family life. Today's Gospel reminds us that forgiveness is measured by its quality more than its quantity. Invite your family to consider some recent times when family members sought the
forgiveness of another. Ask if there were any statements made that put conditions on our forgiveness such as “I will play this game with you if you apologize
for knocking over my blocks” or “I will accept your apology after you clean up your room.” Do we
sometimes “keep count” or put conditions on our forgiveness of one another? This is something we may
be doing without realizing it. Read together today's Gospel, Matthew 18:21-35. Ask if we sometimes find ourselves sounding like Peter, concerning ourselves
with quantity of forgiveness rather than offering forgiveness abundantly and unconditionally. Reflect
upon the parable that Jesus tells. What does the servant do that makes the king so angry? He refuses
to forgive his fellow servant the debt that he owes. Because we have all received God's forgiveness, God
expects that we will also be forgiving toward others. Jesus' answer to Peter's question is found at the end of the parable. The number of times that we forgive one another is less important than the depth of our forgiveness. We must forgive one another from the
heart. Conclude in prayer together that God's love and forgiveness is evident in your family life. Pray together
today's psalm, Psalm 103, or the Lord's Prayer.
Jesus, help us discover what it means to follow you. Help us trust in your healing, grow in our faith, and act in your Spirit. Thank you for all the people in our lives
who guide us to you. Amen.

PARISHIONER TIDBITS
What is intercessory prayer? Intercessory prayer is where we make requests to God on behalf of other people.
Who should we pray for? The bible exhorts us to intercede for all types of groups and people: church leaders, those in authority (managers, politicians, and anyone in a position of power in society); those who are ill; family and friends; enemies and those who mistreat or persecute us; all people should be prayed for.
ENTERING THE HOSPITAL? Parishioners planning to enter the hospital are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the Sick prior to admission. Because of privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify parishes of a parishioner’s stay. Please notify the Rectory of the name of person, hospital and room number, also when the person returns home.

Dear Church Family, On behalf of myself and family, we sincerely thank you and want you to know that we deeply appreciate your sympathy and kindness during our darkest moments. The outpouring of prayers, sympathy cards, telephone calls, and other expressions of condolence for the loss of our dear other were a blessing to us. Knowing that our mother is resting in her heavenly home brings our family great peace. May the peace and the spirit of the Lord be with you all.
Sincerely, Marilyn V. Wimbish & family

Catholic Church demonstrates our missionary discipleship through our circle of Angel Friends. OLPH-
