FROM MY HEART TO YOURS

When I wanted to have a farewell reception for Fr. Tomy Paleli, I realized how good some of our parishioners are in

volunteering to plan for a very classy atmosphere of hospitality with delicious spread of light food, desserts and beverages. I

thank Bob and Allanna Hasselgren, Colin and Maureen McBride and all who served with them in making that evening a great

one. I appreciate your love for Fr. Tomy and your kind support of his missionary activities. That was a very special evening

as we thanked Fr. Tomy for his very loving and generous presence among us during the summer. What a great friend our par-

ish has in Fr. Tomy, the priest with a ‘contagious smile and curious eyes.’

Next weekend, (Sept 21-22) we have a missionary priest, Rev. Robert Havens, visiting us and preaching at all Masses. He is

going to make an appeal for the needs of the Diocese of Karinga, Malawi in Africa. This is arranged through the Office for

the Propagation of Faith of the Archdiocese of New York. Please pray for their intentions and support them as much as you

can.

Our Parish Council will meet on Tuesday, Sept 17. If any of our members would like to share any ideas or concerns, please

email me at [email protected]. I welcome back the Parish Council!

If you haven’t yet joined Walking With Purpose that ‘enables women to know Christ through scripture’, please call the

parish office or walk in on the first day, Tuesday, October 8th at 9.30am to 11.30am. I thank the coordinators of WWP Jo

Golden and Fiona Finnan for their dedicated leadership.

Teen Life that ‘opens young hearts and minds to Christ through worship, service projects, fun and to the love and sup-

port of our community’ will have their first gathering with a Mass for Teen Life on Sept 22, (next Sunday) at 6:00pm in our

church. The parish thanks Vera Scavone for her committed service as Teen Life coordinator for the past few years. We

gratefully thank Melissa Gordon for continuing to serve as the coordinator of Teen Life. Melissa is looking for help from

parents to join her team to assist her in this very important parish ministry.

CCD classes begin next Sunday, Sept 22

nd

. I welcome all the teachers and students back to our classrooms and wish

them a fruitful year.

After celebrating the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept 14, this Sunday (although the Lord’s Day is

given predominance) the church observes the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The principal biblical references to Mary’s sor-

rows are in Luke 2:35 and John 19:26-27. The Lucan passage is Simeon’s prediction about a sword piercing Mary’s soul; the

Johannine passage relates Jesus’ words from the cross to Mary and to the beloved disciple. Many early Church writers inter-

pret the sword as Mary’s sorrows, especially as she saw Jesus die on the cross. Thus, the two passages are brought together as

prediction and fulfillment. Saint Ambrose in particular sees Mary as a sorrowful yet powerful figure at the cross. Mary stood

fearlessly at the cross while others fled. Mary looked on her Son’s wounds with pity, but saw in them the salvation of the

world. As Jesus hung on the cross, Mary did not fear to be killed, but offered herself to her persecutors. John’s account of

Jesus’ death is highly symbolic. When Jesus gives the beloved disciple to Mary, we are invited to appreciate Mary’s role in

the Church: She symbolizes the Church; the beloved disciple represents all believers. As Mary mothered Jesus, she is now

mother to all his followers. Furthermore, as Jesus died, he handed over his Spirit. Mary and the Spirit cooperate in begetting

new children of God—almost an echo of Luke’s account of Jesus’ conception. Christians can trust that they will continue to

experience the caring presence of Mary and Jesus’ Spirit throughout their lives and throughout history.

This week’s gospel is all about the mission of Jesus who came to seek the lost sheep. The Pharisees complain that, “this man

welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Jesus told them three parables: the shepherd’s joy after he finds his lost sheep, the

woman who rejoices when she finds her lost coin, and the father’s joy when the prodigal son returns. The whole message is

summed up and well explained in St. Paul’s own testimony in the 2

nd

reading (Timothy 1: 12-17). We should all read this

again and again, replacing our names for St. Paul’s. When he affirms his foremost position among sinners and the way Christ

made him the best example of an enemy of the church who received abundant mercy and all His patience, many of us may

feel that it is the story of our own spiritual journey.

Stay tuned to the Holy Spirit!

May God bless the whole world!

DIOCESE OF KARONGA

MALAWI, SOUTH-EAST AFRICA

Father Robert from the diocese of Karonga’s School

of the Faith will talk to us about how the diocese is

training lay missionaries for its large territory.

The country of Malawi, located in the southeast of

Africa, is smaller than the State of New York with

about the same population. Most people in Malawi

live on less than one dollar a day and have a life ex-

pectancy of 58. The country has one of the highest

infant mortality rates in the world and about 10% of

the population is infected with HIV/Aids. Almost

everyone in Malawi is Christian, and 2 million of

these Christians are Catholic.

Malawi’s newest diocese is Karonga, in the extreme

north of the country bordering Tanzania and Zambia.

The diocese is about the size of Connecticut, but has

only 16 priests in the whole diocese. This is why the

training of lay catechists is so important. Many

churches are without priests for most of the month,

and there are many people who want to learn about

the Faith and be received into the Catholic Church.
