Dear family,

I was once approached by a woman after a daily Mass. Heading back to the sacristy, she made sure to

intercept me and get my attention. She looked angry and before I could get a word out, she said, “I

have a bone to pick with you.” With a smile on my face I asked about the nature of her concern. She

replied that she was angry and perplexed as to why I never mentioned hell or sin in many of my

homilies. She then opined that a possible reason for this is that I didn’t believe in sin or hell. I answered

that quickly by telling her that there was no honest way I could deny the existence of sin being that in

my own heart and in the world I saw too much selfishness, pettiness and greed. As far as concerns hell,

I told her that I rarely mention it because it is not our goal. Jesus’ whole mission had an orientation

toward reconciliation and was completely filled with His hope. Hell is a possibility and a reality only

because it makes sense that God would love us so much that He would give us free will, even if we use

that free will to reject Him. All things considered friends, I believe it is we who make the way to heaven

narrow, not that God is a sneaky designer looking to exclude and trick as many people as possible. If

anything, we must be aware of that tendency to believe that because of our good works or status of

any kind that we possess heaven. Heaven is for the humble, not the perfect, but those who offer their

imperfections to a perfect God. In His Joy,

Rev. Fr. Daniel J. Gutierrez
