St. Bernard Church Twenty-Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time
Sunday, September 20, 2020
September 20, 2020 2 SAINT BERNARD
“Life isn’t fair!” Have you ever heard your mom or dad say those words to you, especially when you complain that something that happened to you is unfair? We spend much of our time comparing ourselves to others and comparing our life circumstances to others as well. It’s not fair that she is so pretty, that he is so smart, that their family lives in that extremely big house. Jesus tells a parable in today’s Gospel reading that we all can relate to. We have worked diligently on a project, we have studied hard, or we have practiced often for a sports game or band performance, and so we know what it feels to work hard for something that we want to achieve. When we work hard, we want to be rewarded, and so did the laborers in the vineyard that day. They were out in the sun, working hard, so that they could earn a day’s wage. Yet those who joined their ranks later in the day also received the same pay. With all parables, Jesus is teaching us the truth about God and helping us to see God’s nature. Jesus’ story demonstrates that God is generous to every person, no matter what they have done or how hard they have worked. God’s generosity extends to all people, even to those whom we might think do not deserve it. Jesus is teaching us that it might not make sense to us or seem fair at times, but this is who God is. We cannot change the nature of God, and we cannot argue with it. God is generous and loving all the time, to all people. The notion that the last will be first, and the first will be last is an oft-quoted phrase from the Gospel. In many areas of our lives, we strive to be the best, to be first, or to win all the time. Yet Jesus teaches us an important lesson through this parable. The poor, the outcasts, those who struggle—all those who we might describe as the “last” or the “lowest,” are loved by God just as we are loved by God. They deserve the same generosity, love and care that we deserve. Even those who choose unwisely, who are mean, or who are difficult to be around, God is generous with them, just as God is generous with you. Jesus reminds us that part of living the Christian life is being humble and not drawing attention to ourselves and our accolades. This does not mean that we should not strive for excellence; we should give each task the attention it deserves and work with others to achieve goals. However, we must remember to give credit where credit is due; to God, for providing us with such gifts and talents so that we may share his love and generosity with others.

our most attended masses so unfortunately, because of limited attendance, only the catechists, academy teachers and one selected student from each class will be invited to
attend to represent all classes.

Thank you always for your generosity! It is greatly appreciated!

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process by which a person
prepares to become a member of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is one of
inquiry, evangelization, prayer, study and conversion, leading to one’s entrance into the
church through Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. RCIA welcomes the
unbaptized as well as those baptized in other Christian traditions. RCIA also welcomes those who have been baptized Catholic but who have
not completed their sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.
Anyone who is interested in participating in this program is asked to call the Rectory now and speak
to Deacon Frank.

Liturgy of the Word
Every Saturday the 9:00am Mass will be The Liturgy of the Word. It will be celebrated by either
Deacon Frank or Deacon Chris. There will be Distribution of Holy Communion
and the daily intention will be announced.
Celebration Of Mass ♦ Masks must be worn in Church. ♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet) ♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church. ♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people). ♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other. ♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctu-ary on either side of the altar and in the back of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection envelopes and offerings in any of the baskets. ♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass. ♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or concerns. ♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after weekend Masses.
Receiving Communion ♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and con-sume the Eucharist and replace their mask. ♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed. ♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observ-ing at least 6 feet of distance between them as they approach. The floor has markings on it. ♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISHIONERS RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parish-ioner receiving Holy Communion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones receiving so that the Communion minis-ters can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.
