To withhold anbiocs from a person who has every chance of recovering and living a full life if given the medicaon would be morally wrong. But there are mes when we must accept that our death is inevitable and that addional medical treatment will place an excessive burden on us and our caretakers, with lile benefit. To refuse such treatment is not a form of suicide; rather it’s a decision to allow the dying process to take its natural course. The key words here are excessive burden and lile benefit. When is using a venlator too burdensome to bear and able to be withdrawn? When is the natural care of nutrion and hydraon failing to do what it should? Such life-sustaining treatment or care may be too burdensome for some but not for others. A young person aſter a car accident may be leſt a quadriplegic and unable to breathe without a venlator. He might consider the venlator an extraordinary means of preserving life and want to disconnue its use. Any determinaon that disregards the value of this person’s life—by the paent himself or anyone else—must be avoided. Dear Padre September 22, 2019

Is withholding or withdrawing life support a form of euthanasia?

While it’s always morally wrong to kill an innocent person, it can sometimes be morally right to allow someone to die. This implies that it is sometimes morally wrong to allow a person to die. To withhold antibiotics from a person who has every chance of recovering and living a full life if given the medication would be morally wrong. But there are times when we must accept that our death is inevitable and that additional medical treatment will place an excessive burden on us and our caretakers, with little benefit. To refuse such treatment is not a form of suicide; rather it’s a decision to allow the dying process to take its natural course. The key words here are excessive burden and little benefit. When is using a ventilator too burdensome to bear and able to be withdrawn? When is the natural care of nutrition and hydration failing to do what it should? Such life-sustaining treatment or care may be too burdensome for some but not for others. A young person after a car accident may be left a quadriplegic and unable to breathe without a ventilator. He might consider the ventilator an extraordinary means of preserving life and want to discontinue its use. Any determination that disregards the value of this person’s life—by the patient himself or anyone else—must be avoided. Ultimately, such judgments shouldn’t be made without a careful review of Catholic moral teaching, medical and spiritual consultation, and a well-formed conscience. —[email protected] From Life, Death, and Catholic Medical Choices, Frs. Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2019

Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher, once told about a make-believe country where only ducks lived. On Sunday morning all the ducks came into Church, waddled down the aisle, waddled into their pews and squatted. Then the duck minister came in, took his place behind the pulpit, opened the Duck Bible and read, “Ducks! You have wings, and with wings you can fly like eagles. You can soar into the skies! Ducks! You have wings!” All the ducks yelled, “Amen!” and then they all waddled home. No one flew or even tried. Don’t you think there is a great deal of truth in that little fable? Using the parable of a rascal manager in today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us to see that it is time for the children of light to quit waddling. It’s time for us to soar by wisely using our God-given talents and blessings for the welfare of others, thus glorifying God and becoming eligible for our eternal reward. May we be the people that Jesus praises because we saw something that needed to be done and we did it.

In Him we have new life,
