CATHOLICISM AND

PROTESTANTISM: WHERE ARE WE NOW?

The end of October 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the traditional date marking the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. After half a

millennium, where do Catholics and Protestants today stand on many of the issues that were central to the Reformation and what is its lasting legacy? How do we see one another today? Does our continued separation matter?

Find out on Sunday, October 29th, 2017! Michael Schmitz will be giving a talk at 6:30pm, and we will end with Evening Prayer, praying for Christian unity.

Father Peter Mactutis / Padre Pedro Mactutis

Dear parishioners, .

Here is a great quote from St. Ambrose, on prayer: "The Lord Jesus, in his divine wisdom, taught you about the goodness of the

Father, who knows how to give good things, so that you might ask for the things that are good from Goodness itself. He urges you

to pray earnestly and frequently, not offering long and wearisome prayers, but praying often, and with perseverance. Lengthy

prayers are usually filled with empty words, while neglect of prayer results in indifference to prayer. .

Again, Christ urges you, when you ask forgiveness for yourself, to be especially generous to others, so that your actions may

commend your prayer. The Apostle, too, teaches you how to pray; you must avoid anger and contentiousness, so that your prayer

may be serene and wholesome. He tells you also that every place is a place of prayer, though our Savior says: Go into your room. .

But by “room” you must understand, not a room enclosed by walls that imprison your body, but the room that is within you, the

room where you hide your thoughts, where you keep your affections. This room of prayer is always with you, wherever you are,

and it is always a secret room, where only God can see you. .

You are told to pray especially for the people, that is, for the whole body, for all its members, the family of your mother the

Church; the badge of membership in this body is love for each other. If you pray only for yourself, you pray for yourself alone. If

each one prays for himself, he received less from God’s goodness than the one who prays on behalf of others. But as it is,

because each prays for all, all are in fact praying for each one. .

To conclude, if you pray only for yourself, you will be praying, as we said, for yourself alone. But if you pray for all, all will pray

for you, for you are included in all. In this way there is a great recompense; through the prayers of each individual, the

intercession of the whole people is gained for each individual. There is here no pride, but an increase of humility and a richer

harvest from prayer." .

Blessings, .

Fr. Peter

Queridos Parroquianos, .

Bendiciones,

Padre Pedro

All Souls day Memorial Candles/ Velas Conmemorativas para el Dia del Alma Beginning today we will have All Soul's Day Memorial candles available in the Parish Hall. These candles will be blessed and lit prior to the All Soul's Day Mass and will be left burning in the Church for approximately 6 days. These candles are a way to remember your loved ones no longer with you. Donation for each candle is $10.00. Proceeds from the candles will once again benefit the perpetual care of our cemetery. St Mary does not accept credit cards so have your cash or check book with you.

Candles will be available after the Masses on Oct. 15th, Oct. 22 and Oct. 29th until sold out. They will only be available from members of the Cemetery committee after Sunday Masses (not in the office). Candles will also be available at St. Anne from Colleen Thomas.

Thank you!

With heartfelt gratitude the Knights of Columbus offer our deep appreciation for the continued support for our annual "Coats-for-Kids" campaign here at St. Mary Parish. Through the generosity of our parishioners, we raised enough funds to purchase 10 cases of warm winter jackets for children in need of a coat. This equates to over 100 coats for needy children in our community. Together with the 10 cases of coats we are able to purchase, we will also be requesting an additional 5 cases through the Knights of Columbus Black Friday program. Again, thank you one and all for your support and generosity."

God bless, Willie Cardona Grand Knight

From St. Mary & St. Anne's Conference of St. Vincent de Paul:

A big thank-you to Father Peter and all parish members who donated, participated or assisted in any way in our 2nd annual Walk for the Poor, on September 30th.

We really do appreciate your prayers and generous sup-port. Our walk raised $3200 for our conference and will allow us to continue our work with the less-fortunate in our community. Thank-Your So Very Much! If you would like to explore what we do in our St. Vincent de Paul Conference, you are welcome to drop in at one of our meetings. We meet in the parish hall the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:30 PM and the 4th Sunday of the month between the 8 & 10 AM masses.

Adult Formation and Discipleship

We continue our series on prayer by looking at the practice of intentional living for God. While time spent just in prayer is indispensable for growth in the spiritual life, we have to recognize that we can’t pray like that all the time. Yet, St. Paul tells us in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, that we should “pray without ceasing” (5:17). How can we do that, when we have so many responsibilities in our lives? The key is through referring everything we do to God. Every single thing. If you feel like you can’t offer a certain thing to God, perhaps that is a sign you should-n’t be doing it! This spiritual practice has taken many forms, from the “practice of the presence of God” by Brother Lawrence, to the Little Way of St. Therese, to the lay spirituality of St. Josemaria Escriva. For St. Therese, we are called to do little things with great love. Not everyone can be John Paul II and Mother Theresa. But we can fill the humble actions of doing the dishes with the love of God. For St. Josemaria, our duties in life are part of the pro-cess through which God is sanctifying us. We have the opportunity throughout the day to do these things for God, and through the practice of virtue, by God’s grace, we come to greater holiness. If we believe that God is present everywhere, then our lives should take that into account. There is an old adage that “the law of prayer is the law of belief”. In other words, the way we pray expresses what we real-ly believe. It can be instructive to reflect on our pray-er lives to see what they say about what we believe our relationship with God is like.

Quotes of the Week

Learning and Practicing the Faith

Sanctifying one’s work is no fantastic dream, but the mission of every Christian — yours and mine. —That is what that lathe-worker had discov-ered, when he said: “I am overwhelmed with happiness when I think how true it is that while I am working at the lathe and singing — sing-ing all the time, on the outside and on the in-side — I can become a saint. How good God is!”

-St. Josemaria Escriva

“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” -St. Therese of Lisieux
