The uniform at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School has more than a century of history that dates back to the School’s roots in the founding schools of Tweedsmuir: An Academic School for Girls, St. Hilda’s School and Strathcona School for Boys. In some respects, wearing the uniform both honours the traditions that are a part of STS’s history and pays homage to our School’s roots. The uniform is an integral part of life at STS and, in addition to the values associated with tradition and history, the uniform has a myriad of important benefits.

The STS uniform ensures students are neatly and appropriately dressed, competition and extremes of fashion prevented, and an “esprit de corps” is maintained.

TWEEDS AND MORE Tweeds and More is a uniform store located in the School (room 80) and operated by the Parents’ Organization of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (POSTS) and parent volunteers. Tweeds and More offers gently used uniform items for sale as well as some new items. They accept clean, pressed, good condition uniform pieces on consignment or as donation. All proceeds earned are re-invested back into the School.

In addition to consignment, new athletics wear, physical education uniform (gym strip) and summer uniform polo shirts are only available for purchase at Tweeds and More.

UNIFORM GUIDELINES

RULES FOR PERSONAL APPEARANCE AT STS

STS students are expected expected to maintain a high standard for personal appearance. All employees will work to maintain these standards and parents are expected to support them. Students who repeatedly violate these rules will be referred to the Division Principal under the Student Code of Conduct. The Division Principal is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement of these rules in consultation with members of the Academic Leadership Team. Exceptions to these rules will be made by the Division Principal for religious reasons.

1. Students are expected to wear STS’ uniform properly and to abide by uniform rules.

2. Uniforms must be clean and in good condition. 3. Hair must be well kept and of naturally-occurring hair

colour. 4. Students must be clean-shaven. 5. Facial piercings are not permitted. 6. Small earrings may be worn. 7. Exessive jewelry is not permitted. 8. Nails should be neat and clean and of reasonable

length. 9. Visible tattoos are not pemitted. 10. Styles that conflict with the spirit and/or tradition of

well-groomed students at STS are not permitted.

The non-formal uniform for girls must consist of these staple items:

• White button-down Oxford shirt tucked in at all times (long or short-sleeved).

• One of the following bottom options: • Black Watch tunic - Elementary School girls

only (with modesty shorts recommended) • Black Watch kilt and kilt pin - Middle and

Senior School girls only (with modesty shorts recommended). Important note: kilts must be worn at least two inches below the bottom of fingertips when standing straight and extending arms down.

Wearing the STS uniform both honours the traditions that are a part of STS history and pays homage to our School’s roots. The STS School ties are the unique identifiers between all three divisions.

Ties must be tied so that the knot covers the button at the throat. The knot must be of reasonable size and the tie must not be frayed or in poor repair. The top button and collar buttons of the shirt must be done up when wearing a tie.

The namesakes of these houses are rooted in the his-tory of the School and Canada. House ties are to be worn only on Fridays during non-formal uniform days.

COVID-19 UNIFORM ADDENDUM

• Upper body covering: a clean shirt such as a but-ton-up shirt, summer uniform polo shirt, PE shirt, or any other STS branded shirts or hoodies;

• Lower body covering: dress pants (grey for boys, navy for girls), summer uniform shorts or skort, STS branded PE shorts or sweatpants for daily PE;

• Footwear: students may wear their indoor PE runners if wearing athletic kit, otherwise should wear black dress shoes;

• Athletic wear: Elementary School students will not have access to the gym locker room; thus, gym clothing may be worn during the day or they may wear their summer uniform during PE classes. If students would like to wear their regular uniform (e.g. dress shirt and pants or tunic)they should have their PE clothes on underneath in order to participate in physical activity.

Hygiene and clean clothes are to be prioritized to lower transmission rates of COVID-19. Students must wear clean clothes and masks (Grades 4+) every day. • Footwear: students may wear their indoor PE runners if wearing athletic kit, otherwise should wear black dress shoes;

• Athletic wear: PE staff will communicate with students and families a schedule of days when specific cohorts of students need to wear PE clothing to school. Students should wear STS uniform on all other days. Change rooms and lockers may not be available to all students atall times.
