    Currumbin > Tugun > Bilinga > Kirra > Coolangatta > Rainbow Bay

If you want an ocean-side route to the Tweed, then the coast road is for you. This drive can be done in under half a day (depending on the time you spend surfing, shopping and dining on the way).

Currumbin- Start at the Currumbin Alley, follow Pacific Pde south along the foreshore, turn left at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and head south along Golden Four Drive, through Tugun village.

On your left, about 150m from the road, are the 8km of the beaches of Currumbin, Tugun, Kirra and Coolangatta, with some of the best surf in Australia. Merge with Musgrave St and proceed through the Kirra beachfront and to Marine Parade. That will take you around the Kirra Point, Coolangatta and Point Danger. Turn right at Coolangatta and drive up Kirra Hill for a great view of the Gold Coast. To the south east, along Marine Parade, are Greenmount and Rainbow Bay beaches.

Greenmount Hill offers panoramic views. At Rainbow Bay youll find Snapper Rocks point surf break - one of the 14 wonders of a Queensland holiday experience. Up the hill to the south stands Point Danger, Queenslands most easterly point, with spectacular views to the east and south across the Tweed and the Duranbah surf beach below. Head South from Point Danger along the Qeensland/New South Wales border, down Boundary Street and left into Wharf street. You are now in the Tweed and can explore Cabarita, Murwillumbah and beyond!.

e xploring the Tweed-Byron coastline is a great days touring. There are rugged headlands, idyllic picnic spots, ledgendary fishing, a string of funky coastal villages, and no end of exciting things to see and do.

Start the day with a stroll through the rainforest to Fingal Lighthouse. Watch the whales travel past during their annual migration (June to November). Take the Coast Road to Kingscliff and enjoy a scrumptious breakfast in one of the many fabulous cafs. Join the dolphins for a surf or slap on sunscreen and bask on the pandanus fringed sands of Cabarita. Continuing along the Coast Road to Wooyung, there are dozens of coastal treasures just waiting to be discovered. Each village has its own fishing spots or unspoiled beach and there are campsites, caravan parks, apartments and resorts should you decide to stay a while. Surfers should check out Duranbah Beach, Norries Headland and Cabarita. For anglers, the beaches and estuaries of Hastings Point are excellent for tailor, whiting, bream, flathead and mud crab.

Just a short hop down the highway, take the Mullumbimby turn-off to explore this popular town and its colourful shopping centre. From Mullum, take the back road and follow the brown and white tourist signs towards Goonengerry to visit the Crystal Castle, an enchanting getaway reflective of the spirituality and element of escapism that Byron Bay is famous for. Explore magical gardens of giant crystals and sacred statues, walk the ancient labyrinth and marvel at exquisite jewellery and treasures. Enhance your spiritual connection with aura photos and tarot readings and indulge in local treats and coffee savoring the magnificent hinterland views in the Lotus Caf over breakfast or lunch. Get lost in the beauty, energy and spirit that this magical place has to offer. Only 20 minutes from Byron and 40 minutes from the Gold Coast Airport. Inspiration, tranquility and breathtaking beauty await. Enrich your Spirit!

Heading back along Coolamon Scenic Drive follow the ridgeline back to the highway. Stop at one of the regions most spectacular lookouts with panoramic views over Byron. Turn right at the highway to visit the heritage town of Bangalow. This beautiful village has excellent cafs, galleries, antique, designer homeware and clothing stores and an amazing array of local gourmet produce.

From Bangalow, continue out to the highway south and head to Macadamia Castle. Set on six acres, the kids will love this experience where children can see newborn chicks, bottle feed calves, nurse rabbits and see all kinds of native and farm animals. Theres an adventure treehouse, a flying fox, mini golf and lots of play areas for children. Free gas BBQs or use the caf facilities.

Take the back road through the rolling hills to Byron and relax with a cool refreshment in one of the many cafes and restaurants.

the timber veranda of the historic Mt Warning Hotel. Just behind the Buttery, you can stretch your legs on the riverbank walk where you may see the elusive platypus playing in the late afternoon.

Mt Warning - Mt Warning Road is a magical 6km drive through the foothills of Mt Warning to the start of the walking tracks at the Breakfast Creek Picnic Area. The 200m Lyrebird Track leads to a viewing platform in the midst of this ancient Gondwanan rainforest. If you wish to explore, extend your visit and stay at the Mt Warning Holiday Park.

Mt Warning was named by Captain Cook on his voyage of discovery as a warning to seafarers of the dangerous off shore reefs.

Return to Murwillumbah, stocking up on fresh local fruit and vegetables at roadside stalls or continue your explorations via Stokers Siding and Mooball to the Tweed.

Mt. Warning Holiday Park is at the base of the majestic Mt Warning - Wollumbin. The park is set on fifteen acres surrounded by mountain streams and rainforests with 150 powered and camping sites. Accommodation includes deluxe, ensuite and budget cabins. The park offers a range of guest facilities including swimming pool, camp kitchen, laundry facitlies, tv room, games arcade, tennis court and much more. The drinking water throughout the park is from a volcanic spring.

While you are staying at the park why not climb Mt Warning (be the first to see the sunrise on mainland Australia).

Visit the surrounding National Parks or just sit back relax and enjoy the tranquil environment.

Coolamon Cultural Centre: a Federation building with a large veranda which was originally home of the Proudfoot family. In 1986, the Doug Moran National Portrait prize was launched in the Tweed and Council converted this building into the Tweed Regional Art Gallery. It was opened in 1988 (Bicentennial year). Beach Park. Head up Leticia Road to the tip of the spit at the mouth of the Tweed.

highlights Echidna Sculpture in Fingal Beach

Park. The Aboriginal name of Fingal Headland, Pooningbah, means place

of the echidna. The name reflects the Aboriginal belief that the headland is inhabited by the spirit of a giant echidna. The formation, east of the headland, resembles an outline of an echidna.

Fingal Cemetery. Many Aboriginal and South Sea Islander people who lived at Fingal are buried here. Originally an Aboriginal burial ground, it was also used as the community cemetery. Only a portion of the original burial ground remains. Today, it is a registered Aboriginal and Islander cemetery, maintained by a Community Trust.

Original Aboriginal Settlement. Aborigines of the Cudgingburra Clan, belonging to the Bundjalung Nation, occupied this land for thousands of years. The whole area has a rich Aboriginal spiritual and cultural significance, which persists to this day.

An oral tradition among Fingal Head Aboriginal people states that between 12 and 40 aboriginals died at Fingal Head after eating food made from poisoned flour given to them by white ment.
