J ULY marks the end of the academic year and welcomes in some much coveted freedom for all the hardworking students. I’ll admit I’m more than a bit jealous, there is something

rather appealing about drawing a line under each year and starting afresh, with a nice long holiday in between. Of course that would be without the meltdown inducing exams.

For those who are going to be sun seeking this summer, whilst we enjoy lounging around by the pool apparently our hair is not so happy with the rigours of being on holiday. Bradley Smith Hair and Beauty have some top tips for making sure it doesn’t mutiny, see page 6.

5 HAIR TIPS TO NOURISH YOUR HAIR IN SUMMERWith the summer months in full swing, it’s sometimes easy to forgot how damaging the sun can be on your hair. With our five top tips, you’ll not only stay beach-fabulous this season, but your tresses will thank you right up until winter.

1. It’s time to fight the FRIZZ for some of you. Put your heavy duty conditioners back in the cupboard and choose a lighter one to avoid a Lion’s mane.

2. Heat protection is essential in summer, but what’s even more of a must, is a heat protection spray with UVA an UVB filters. It’s like sun lotion for the hair!

3. People take a dip in the pool without realising how damaging chlorine can be to your hair. Choose a summer shampoo that gently washes away salt, chlorine and other pollutants.4. As much as you might be attached to your hair straighteners, it’s like a heat overload after a week’s worth of strong sunshine. Embrace your

effortless, beach waves and spritz sea salt spray into your damp locks and leave to dry naturally.5. We try not to advise people to get their hair coloured before they go on holiday as the sun can alter the colour. However, if your hair colour isn’t natural, DEFINITELY use a colour intensive protection mask. Cover your hair in the mask when sun bathing or once you’ve rinsed your hair after coming out of the pool or sea.

1. Curl hair using a curling iron.2. Once curls are set, run fingers through the curls to make a loose wave.3. Tie hair at the nape of the neck with an elastic and then place a ‘doughnut’ through the ponytail. Secure with grips. 4. Wrap the hair around the doughnut leaving excess hair hanging out. Secure with grips.5. Secure any remaining curls to the head or allow to hang freely6. Complete by giving the style extra hold with medium-hold hair spray.

2. Once the waves have set, brush hair out with your fingers.3. Take a small piece of hair from the front of your hairline and divide into 3 pieces.4. To begin, cross the right section of hair into the centre.5. Cross the left section of hair into the centre.6. Continue crossing the hair adding more hair from the base into each section.7. When you finish the plait, secure with an elastic and spritz with a shine spray like Wella’s Shimmer Delight Shine Spray.

DOUBLE BUN1. Brush and smooth hair out.2. Create 2 pony tails down the back of your head.

3. Curl the pony tail’s sections and when set, wrap small sections of the pony tail around your fingers and secure with grips around the centre of the pony tail.4. Do the same to the second ponytail.5. To finish, spray a medium-hold hairspray all over to tame any fly away hairs. We particularly love Wella’s Stay Styled Finishing Spray.

Charity in memory of Art Wood, a great

character, vocalist and artist who was brother

of Rolling Stone, Ronnie. Art was a talented

vocalist with his own band, The Artwoods, and

with Alexis Korner and the Cyril Davies All-Stars

and he was an integral part of the Eel Pie Club

in its early days where he fronted The Art Wood

All-Stars. Art died from Prostate Cancer in 2006.

His birthday would have been on 7 July so in

memory of Art, this will be a great night of

rockin’ rhythm and blues and nostalgia.

LOCAL RESIDENT Matt Bryson and his family had an unexpected visitor over for Sunday lunch

when they discovered an owl perched on their roof in Michelham Gardens.

It seems that Parsnip had absconded from the Festival of Fun Birds of Prey Exhibition at nearby Strawberry Hill House having decided he was not in the mood to perform after been bullied by a peregrine falcon.

Matt was alerted to Parsnip’s sojourn by his wife calling him outside, ‘The next thing we heard was a beeping sound coming from down the road. There was a man with a large leather glove on one hand, tassels on his boots, and a leather satchel full of dead chicks heading towards us. He had a very large tracking device in his hands and he stopped at our house - looked up and said “There you are Parsnip!”

Matt says ‘It took the handler quite a while to coax him down, and he ended up having to

tempt Parsnip back in with a dead chick! It was quite funny - apart from explaining what the owl food was to our two year old!’

ONE OF THE MOST exciting events to take place in the Borough for many

years will be the Rugby World Cup (RWC) starting in September. There is a dedicated page on the Council’s website and even if you don’t have a laptop at home you can go to your local library and read all about it there.

Every host country has to have Fanzones and we shall have one in Richmond. The Fanzone is an enclosed area away from the Stadium that must be free to enter during match screenings. The Fanzone will be in place from 18th September until the Final at Twickenham Stadium on the 31st October 2015.

The Fanzone will be in Old Deer Park in Richmond alongside the A316 so very easy to get to by train. It will have a capacity of 10,000 people and have a Fanzone hub - a 5000 people capacity tent with a big screen, seating and entertainment.There will also be an outdoor screen, a limited number of food concession pitches, a bar, high quality rides and attractions, a rugby exhibition pitch hosting matches and demonstrations and various Rugby World Cup sponsor activity areas.

If you have not been able to get tickets it is the ideal place to go! It will be open for all the England matches and for a minimum of ten games.

Please be aware that on Twickenham match days the A316 will be closed to all but Rugby coaches between the Whitton and Twickenham roundabouts. Coaches will be parked along the entire length in the slow lanes but will use the outer lane to enter and leave. There will also be park and ride at Kempton Race course.

England Rugby 2015 will be providing volunteers known as ‘The Pack’ who will be based throughout the borough and will provide many functions including directing spectators to town centres, Fanzone or Stadium, helping manage queues and exit from the area, ensure local

community movements and act as a visible deterrent to anti-social behaviour.

Another rather startling thing is that the Sir Christopher Wren church Tower on the A316 will be scaffolded and completely enclosed in an advertising wrap. The money the advertising will bring in will not only pay for essential and expensive repair of the Tower but will enable this work to take place behind the wrap and using the scaffolding. It will be removed by November 2nd. Planning permission was granted at the Planning Committee of 10th June and again you can read about this in the planning section of the Council’s website.
