Egypt ConsidersAction Against EthiopiaCallum Wood | June 6

A o top Egyptian o-ficials has proved that a strike

on the Grand Ethiopian RenaissanceDam is a possibility. Te meeting, heldon Monday, shed light on the mindseto some o the more radical parties inEgypt in regard to Ethiopias threat tothe Nile. Apparently unbeknown tothe speakers, the meeting was beingaired on national television.

One o the most outspoken critics

o the dam was Younis Makhyoun, the leader o an ultraconservativeIslamist party. Mr. Makhyoun sug-gested direct military action as a last

resort to stop the construction o thedam. His more immediate idea wasto back rebels within Ethiopia, saying,

we can communicate with them anduse them as a bargaining chip againstthe Ethiopian government.

During the s, Egypt wasground zero or the ormation othe Eritrean Liberation Front romwhich later sprang the EritreanPeoples Liberation Front, the primaryorce behind Eritreas long war or

independence rom Ethiopia. Duringthe s and s, Egypt actively sup-ported several other terrorist groupsthat also worked to overthrow the

government in Ethiopia. When Eritreafinally gained independence in , ithad Egypt to thank.

Mr. Makhyoun suggested that moredirect involvement might be called or.

I [aiding rebels] ails, then there isno choice lef or Egypt but to play thefinal card, which is using the intelli-gence service to destroy the dam.

In a statement released shortlyafer the meeting on Monday, Mor-sis office said, Egypt wil l never

A it came to pass. Samantha Power has finally made

it into the top tier o the Obama administration.Power is reputed to be one o President Obamas closest

advisers. Until now, she was the relatively lowly director omultilateral affairs at the National Security Council.

With her reported imminent appointment as the U.S.Ambassador to the United Nations, what I predicted at thebeginning o the Obama presidency has now happened:that in a second term, he would promote to the ront rankthose who were so extreme and so dangerous to the well-being o America and the civilized world that in his firstterm, so as not to righten the horses, he would keep themin the lower ranks out o sight.

Well, we should a ll be rightened by Samantha Power.

She is the living embodiment o the way in which hu-man rights have morphed into their absolute opposite, and instead o providing a protection against tyranny havebeen turned into the anvil upon which reedom and justiceare being smashed.

A supposed expert on genocide, having argued that na-tions have a moral obligation to prevent it, she was asked in as a thought experiment what she would advise theU.S. president to do about the Israel-Palestinian problemi one party or another [starts] looking like they might bemoving toward genocide.

She responded to this already disturbingly loaded ques-

tion: what we need is a willingness to put something onthe line in helping the situation. Putting something on theline might mean alienating a domestic constituency o tre-mendous political and financial import; it may more cru-cially mean sacrificingor investing, I think, more thansacrificingbillions o dollars, not in servicing Israelsmilitary, but actually investing in the new state o Palestine,

in investing the billions o dollars it would probably take, also, to support what will have to be a mammoth protec-tion orce, not o the old Rwanda kind, but a meaningulmilitary presence. Because it seems to me at this stage (and

this is true o actual genocides as well, and not just majorhuman rights abuses, which were seen there), you have togo in as i youre serious, you have to put something onthe line. And, unortunately, it does require externalintervention .

Clearly, despite the careul nods to a (disgusting) moralequivalence, Power was not talking about invading thedisputed territories beyond Israels borders to prevent thePalestinians rom committing genocide or major humanrights abuses against Israel by wiping out the Jewishnational homelandan aim to which their leadershipremains committed in word and deed.

No, she was talking about invading Israel to prevent a

genocide, or major human rights abuses, (her languagewasnt clear, but the point is the same), against the Palestin-ianssomething which, in any rational universe, not onlycould not possibly be laid at Israels door but also held outthe possibility that Israel might commit atrocities againstpeople who themselves make Israel the victim of preciselysuch atrocities (and indeed, commit them regularly againstother Palestinians).

She also suggested that the only people who might bealienated by invading Israel would be American Jews whoexercised tremendous political and financial power overAmerican politics.

And despite her advocacy o attack or invasion toprevent threatened genocides, she has sneered at concernsabout the race to build a nuclear bomb by Iran, whichhas repeatedly threatened genocide against the Jews oIsrael, as a igment o the war-mongering Republicanimagination.

Samantha Power and the UN are thus a perect match.

His removal rom the presidentialrunning indicates that no dissentwhatsoever is being tolerated.

Khamenei also removed EsandiarRahim Mashaei, a close ally o thecurrent president, Mahmoud Ahma-

dinejad. Mashaei currently serves ashis chie o staff.

What can the would-be counter-revolutionaries offer to win over theIranian public, asks Maghen.

On uesday, Khamenei said thatoreign and domestic sources weretrying to undermine the upcomingelections. He seems to be setting thestage in case any unrest develops, making it clear that protesters wouldbe viewed as traitors.

S offered the possi-bility o a strategic deeat o Iran. Inthis scenario, Iran would be weakenedby the collapse o President Bashar alAssads regime, ehrans Arab allyand a vital link to Lebanons Hezbol-lah militia. And as Irans regionalinfluence aded, those o its rivalsU.S. allies urkey, Qatar and SaudiArabiawould expand.

Instead, events in Syria are spin-ning in Irans avor. Assads regimeis winning ground, the war has madeIran more comortable in its nuclearpursuits, and Irans gains have embar-

rassed U.S. allies that support theSyrian uprising. Whats more, Iranhas strengthened its relationship withRussia, which may prove to be themost important strategic consequenceo the Syrian conflict, should the U.S.continue to sit it out.

Syria is now a proxy war, theoutcome o which will determine theregional pecking order. In the Mid-east, aura o power decides strategicadvantage. Hezbollahs prowess in

Syria is a blow to Saudi Arabia, whichhas supported Hezbollahs politicalopponents in Lebanon. Te SyrianArmys gains are a setback to the Sau-dis, Qataris and urks, all o whomhave backed the rebels with moneyand weapons.

China Is ReapingBiggest Benefits ofIraq Oil BoomNEW YORK TIMES | June 2

S American-led invasiono , Iraq has become one o theworlds top oil producers, and China isnow its biggest customer.

T room podium in the European Unions head-quarters is usually the domain o men in conservativelycut dark suits.

Last week, however, the stage was a prousion o flowing

robes, broad-brimmed edoras, gleaming gold chains, tur-bans, ecclesiastical dog collars and a shimmering blue-greysari, as the EUs leadership sought to take the Continentsspiritual pulse at their annual meeting with religious repre-sentatives.

With its popularity battered in the midst o the econom-ic crisis, the EU was seeking some solace and support.

You the religious authorities, help us with your societaland spiritual contributions, to rediscover the enchantmento our European uture and to rebuild the strength o ourEuropean soul, pleaded Herman Van Rompuy, the devoutCatholic and ormer Belgian prime minister who presidesover EU summits.

Europes crisis goes beyond the economic, speakers atthe meeting agreed.

Disillusioned citizens are questioning the values o Eu-ropean integration that have pushed nations o the postwarContinent together or the past years, rejecting tradi-tional political parties to seeknew and sometimes scary alter-natives on the political margins.

We have al l spoken about acrisis that is much more pro-ound than what we see in mon-etary and economic terms, there

is a crisis in our society, saidMetropolitan Emmanuel Ada-makis, head o the Greek Orthodox Church in France.

Te problem or many o the spiritual leaders attendingis that Europe is a lso undergoing a crisis o religious iden-tity. In several countries, church attendance and religiousaffiliation have plummeted in recent decades. Even inthe traditionally more devout Catholic countries o south-ern Europe, aith is under pressure. A survey released in

February showed percent o Spaniards describe them-selves as Catholic, a all o almost percent in a decade.

One religion that is growing in Europe is Islam. On average Muslims make up . percent o the popu-

lation o the nations o the EU, according to figuresreleased by the Pew Research Center in December. Churches abandoned or lack o congregations have beenturned into mosques, as well as caes, rock-climbing cen-ters and private homes. Te economic crisis, which has nurtured the neo-Nazi cause, may endure or worsen, said a report rom theWorld Jewish Congress last month. We must be preparedor all eventualities.

In countries hardest hit by the crisis, rising poverty and

declining government resources have given religions anenhanced role as providers o basic needs.

Some experts are pointing out that Chinas nucleardeployments now more resemble Russias than those thatwould be associated with a no first use doctrine and min-imum deterrence as understood in the West. Tey include a

vast network o concealed underground missile complexesand command posts, the development o advanced missiletargeting technologies, space-based anti-satellite weaponryand growing cyberwarare capabilities.

Te report notes that China has deployed within imme-

diate range o aiwan more than , short-range ballisticmissiles and combat aircraf.

However, the report also finds that Chinas reach is moreinternational than in the past as its interests have becomemore global. o support the s growing range omissions and roles, in China invested in advanced

short- and medium-range conventional ballistic missiles,land-attack and anti-ship cruise missiles, counterspaceweapons and military cyberspace capabilities that appeardesigned to enable anti-access/area-denial missions

(what strategists reer to as counter-intervention op-erations).

Meanwhile, the Chinese military has greatly increased bi-lateral and multilateral military exercises in order to increaseits influence and to gain insights into the tactics and technol-ogies used by other militaries. During the five-year periodrom to the participated in joint exercises.During and the orces held joint exercises, in-cluding with Russia, Venezuela, Vietnam, Pakistan, Belarus,Mongolia, Tailand, France and the United States.

While the Pentagon report is careul to rerain romjudging or criticizing China, it is obvious that most o thes military modernization efforts are aimed at deterring

and deeating the United States. []he newly publishedestimate by the Stockholm International Peace ResearchInstitute [says] that China has about nuclear warheads. However, based on analysis o the capacity o Second Artil-lery tunnels to hide missiles, critics estimate that Chinamight have as many as , warheads.

T U States is at a crossroads, and the Americanpeople must consider careully an issue that has been

creeping up on us or two decades. For most o the past years, America enjoyed unquestioned naval global supe-riority, and we could be confident that the U.S. Navy couldestablish and sustain maritime dominance wherever andwhenever needed.

However, since the early s, Americas Navy has beenin decline, with our fleet shrinking rom almost shipsto just ships by the end o . Now in , Presi-dent Obama has announced a new deense strategy orAmerica that threatens to accelerate the continued declineo U.S. naval power.

oday, the U.S. Navy simplydoesnt have enough suraceships, aircraf carriers and sub-marines to cover the regional hotspots o a volatile world. One re-cent sign o Americas weakenedstatus is that the U.S. Navy had no aircraf carrier or evenan Amphibious Ready Group anywhere in the Mediter-ranean on September when al Qaeda-linked terroristsattacked and firebombed the U.S. Consulate in Beng-hazi, Libya. Despite it being the th anniversary o the

Sept. , , terrorist attacks and despite multiple urgentrequests or greater protection by Ambassador J. Christo-pher Stevens, the U.S. military had no orces in the entireeastern Mediterranean at the time o the attack.

Te question is: Will America wake rom its slumberand realize that our nations naval power is slipping away?We may stil l have the largest and most capable navy in theworld, but the important issue is whether our Navy canmeet the demands o deending American interests aroundthe world.

America has vital interests at stake. Over the courseo history, great military powers have come and gone, but

    as the noted historian Colin

Gray tells us no sea power, ormaritime coalition, has ever beendeeated in any o the great mili-tary struggles o modern times.

Te question beore the Amer-ican people is: Shall we willingly

surrender our global leadership by allowing our militarypower to decline in these dangerous times?

Our Navy and our military orces are in decline, and ournational interests are increasingly at risk. Its time or ourpresident and Congress to tell the truth and to lead.

U.S. leaders have talkedabout a so-called strategic shif

As ar asmeeting with ambassadors and othermilitary leaders in that area, theylike the concept, [but] they dontunderstand the concept becausewe didnt do very good messaging, said Rep. J. co-chairman o the CongressionalChina Caucus. Asian allies are wait-ing to see more U.S. assets broughtinto the region, but so ar, therehas been little additional presence,

    Forbes told Washington, D.C.-basedreporters.

While there may be an intentionto send more ships and troops to theAsia-Pacific region, Pentagon lead-ers underestimated what would beneeded in the Middle East. Continu-ing unrest there has delayed themovement o assets to the Pacific,Forbes said. I think somebody waseither misleading just a little bit interms o how they were going to

T N Security Agency is currently collectingthe telephone records o millions o U.S. customers oVerizon, one o Americas largest telecoms providers, undera top-secret court order issued in April.

Te order, a copy o which has been obtained by theGuardian, requires Verizon on an ongoing, daily basis togive the inormation on all telephone calls in its sys-tems, both within the U.S. and between the U.S. and othercountries.

Te document shows or the first time that under theObama administration the communication records o mil-lions o U.S. citizens are being collected indiscriminatelyand in bulkregardless o whether they are suspected oany wrongdoing.

Te secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ()granted the order to the on April , giving the govern-ment unlimited authority to obtain the data or a specified

three-month period ending on July .Under the terms o the blanket order, the numbers o

both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and durationo all calls. Te contents o the conversation itsel are notcovered.

Under the Bush administration, officials in securityagencies had disclosed to reporters the large-scale col-lection o call records data by the , but this is the firsttime significant and top-secret documents have revealedthe continuation o the practice on a massive scale underPresident Obama.

Te unlimited nature o the records being handed overto the is extremely unusual. Te Guardianapproached the National Security

Agency, the White House and the Department o Justiceor comment in advance o publication on Wednesday. All declined.

Te court order expressly bars Verizon rom disclosingto the public either the existence o the s request orits customers records, or the court order itsel.

It is not known whether Verizon is the only cell-phone

provider to be targeted with such an order, althoughprevious reporting has suggested the has collected cellrecords rom all major mobile networks.

Te court order appears to explain the numerous crypticpublic warnings by two U.S. senators, Ron Wyden andMark Udall, about the scope o the Obama administra-tions surveillance activities. For roughly two years, the twoDemocrats have been stridently advising the public that theU.S. government is relying on secret legal interpretationsto claim surveillance powers so broad that the Americanpublic would be stunned to learn o the kind o domesticspying being conducted.

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder last year, they

argued that there is now a significant gap between whatmost Americans thinkthe law allows and what the govern-ment secretly claimsthe law allows.

We believe, they wrote, that most Americans wouldbe stunned to learn the details o how these secret courtopinions have interpreted the business records provi-sion o the Patriot Act.

In the mid-s, Congress, or the first time, investigat-ed the surveillance activities o the U.S. government. Backthen, the mandate o the was that it would never directits surveillance apparatus domestically.

At the conclusion o that investigation, Frank Church,

the Democratic senator rom Idaho who chaired theinvestigative committee, warned: Te s capability atany time could be turned around on the American people, and no American would have any privacy lef, such is thecapability to monitor everything: telephone conversations, telegrams, it doesnt matter.

    Should U.S. Ready for

F than years, mostAmericans have thought o nuclearweapons as an all-or-nothing game.Te only way to win is not to play at all,we believed, because any use o nukeswill lead to Armageddon. Tat may nolonger be the game our opposition isplaying.

As nuclear weapons prolierate toplaces that might not share our reluc-

tance to use them in small numbers, however, the U.S. military may ace a

second nuclear age o retail Armaged-don or which it is utterly unprepared.

Outside the U.S., both establishedand emerging nuclear powers increas-ingly see nuclear weapons as weaponsthat can be usedin a controlled, lim-ited, and strategically useul ashion, said Barry Watts, an analyst with theCenter or Strategic and BudgetaryAssessments, arguably the Pentagons

T American conspiracy theorists who live uptrees with guns dont seem quite so crazy anymore. Itturns out that a secret court order has empowered theU.S. government to collect the phone records o millions

o users o Verizon, one o the most popular telephoneprovidersa massive domestic surveillance program anda shocking intrusion into the lives o others. For the firsttime in history, being an customer doesnt seem sucha bad thing afer all.

A ew observations. First, America is so conscious andproud o its history as a beacon o liberty that it ofenoverlooks the tyranny that occurs on its own shores in thename o saeguarding democracy. Te national securitystate has expanded to the point whereby it now unctionsoutside o democratic control and with clear disregard orthe Constitution. Whats especially creepy about this caseis that the state elt no legal obligation to tell citizens that it

was spying on themor at least considering it. Te result isa disturbing paradox: Its legal to collect inormation romcompanies but illegal or the companies to try to tell theircustomers about it. It seems that the law preers to take theside o the state.

Second, you get what you vote orand both Repub-licans and Democrats keep on voting or authoritarians.Teres a rustrating hypocrisy that many conservatives

applauded the accrual o state power under Bush or thesake o fighting the war on terror only to scream bluemurder about it now that its happening under Obama.Likewise, many liberals resented the domestic espionage

program o Bush but have been less vocal about opposing itunder Obama. Te journalist Martin Bashir has gone so aras to claim that the scandal is a coded attack upon thepresidents race, that is the new n word. Sometimesit eels like Obama could be discovered standing over thebody o Sarah Palin with a smoking gun in his hand andliberals would scream racist! i anyone called him a mur-derer. Teir capacity or sel-delusion knows no bounds.

Finally, totaling every scandal up, AP phone re-cords, Fox journalists being targeted, the Benghazi messthis has to be the most urtively authoritarian White Housesince Nixons. We dont yet have a smoking e-mail romObama ordering all o this, but it cant be said ofen enough

that there is a correlation between Obamas progressivedomestic agenda and the misbehavior o the other agen-cies governed by his administrationorcing people to buyhealth care even when they cant afford it, bailing out thebanks, war in Libya and the use o drone strikes to kill U.S.citizens. Tis is exactly what the tea party was ounded toexpose and oppose. All the laughter once directed at the

    JUNE 8 201312THE TRUMPET WEEKLY

Vaticans current great crusade tobring Europe back to its traditionalRoman Catholic roots, this will noteventually include the methods usedon non-Catholic Slavs under AntePavelis regime in the Nazi era.

Te problem is that nations tend to

react in habitual ways given certain stimuli under certainkinds o leadership. Te tendency o Anglo-Saxon diplo-macy to think that our traditional enemies can be changedrom demonstrating their historic warlike tendencies intowarm and uzzy democracies seems overwhelming. It ispredicated on a gross ignorance o history.

In respect o Croatia, what happened in Yugoslavia dur-ing the years to , in the satellite state o Croatiaunder the government o Croatian ascists, known as theUstashi, [was] supported by the Axis powers, as well as by theCroatian Catholic hierarchy, with the knowledge o the Vati-can (Edmond Paris, Genocide in Satellite Croatia, -).

Paris notes that , Serbs were killed in just our

years during the Nazi/Utashi era, compared with ,slaughtered in the name o the religion o Rome over the-year period o the Spanish Inquisition.

Te period that has elapsed rom the time these atroci-ties o the s were enacted and today is but a mereaverage lietime. Seventy years is but a drop in the bucketwithin the whole context o history. Te continually resur-recting Roman Empire tracks its history over almost ,years rom Justinians restoration to the present day. Tehavoc it has wreaked over that period is legend, with mosto its atrocities being committed in the name o its Romanreligion under the imperial title o the Holy Roman Empire.

He would be an ignorant person indeed who would as-sume the habits o the Holy Roman Empire, extending overa ,-year period o repetitive resurrections, will havechanged as we watch the seventh and final resurrection othat iron empire now leaping into ocus as each week goes by.

One only has to remember the ethnic cleansing thattook place during the Balkan warscatalyzed by the Ber-lin/Rome axiss recognition o Croatian independencethat took place barely years ago to know the murder-ous intent that lies just below the surace within certainextremist circles in Europe.

As previously noted, its a plainly evident act o historythat, given certain stimuli under a particular style o po-

litico/religious leadership, certain nations will revert to type.Te conditions that make or such phenomena are build-

ing right now in the wake o the eurocrisis.German Minister o Finance Wolgang Schuble warned

recently that Europe could ace revolution unless theincreasing level o unemployment on the Continent is ad-dressed.

Europe is suffering rom increasing social disruption ex-acerbated by what Germanys ex-minister o deense BaronKarl-Teodor zu Guttenberg has identified as a clear lacko leadership. Te problem is that in times o social disinte-gration, Europe has a habit o turning to extremist political

elements or leadership. Te most recent occasion endedup with two dictators calling the tune, with the Vaticanhaving concluded a concordat with the leading protagonist,Adol Hitler. Tis concordat pledged allegiance by the Ro-man Catholic priesthood to German political leadership.Multiple millions died under the influence o that unhappyalliancebarely years agoincluding , Serbsunder the religious zealotry o the Croatian Ustashi.

I we track the history o Europe since German reuni-fication in to the present day, we will see the threado the same major influences both behind the scenes andincreasingly at center stageBerlin and Rome, with a will-ing lackey o both now coming into ocus: Croatia.

Simply put, Bible prophecy predicts that what Germanyand Rome initiated by their bilateral recognition, againstall other international opinion at the time, o Croatia andSlovenia as sovereign nations separate rom the Republico Yugoslaviawar in the Balkanswill consummate ina powerul Mideast war, ultimately destroying the majorsponsor o extremist, Islamic international terror.

Tat peremptory attack on Iran is described as a whirl-wind. Our editor in chie recently described how thiswhirlwind is already being activated.

Very shortly we shall see how Germanys action inrecognizing Croatian nationalism a little less than years

ago will consummate in devastation in Iran. But that war will be but a curtain-raiser to an even widerand more aggressive conflict, all prophesied in your Bible. Its a conflict that is destined to hit the Anglo-Saxon na-tions particularly hard. Our booklet Daniel Unlocks Revela-tionwill help you understand the whole flow o this latterhistory and prophecy o the Holy Roman Empire, undergo-ing its seventh and final resurrection beore our eyes at this

very moment.Te good news in all o this is that it will introduce the

major event yet to occur in our time: the return o JesusChrist to install His Kingdom o peace on a weary and war-torn world, ultimately banishing war, terror, ethnic cleans-

ing and orced conversion to alse religionforever!o catch the vision o what is to ollow the horrors o

war just ahead, read our inspiring booklet Te WonderfulWorld omorrow. Follow Ron Fraser: Twitter
