Welcome to the year-end issue of TV Technology Europe. I’m sure many of you will have been made aware that this magazine’s long-serving editor, Mark Hallinger, has moved on to pastures new between the close of the last issue and the production of this. His management and instruction has played no small part in the continued development of the publication, and I’m sure you will join me in thanking him for his service to TV Technology, and to the industry, and in wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

This issue marks the end of a chapter in the life of this magazine, and from edition one 2015 onwards, you will see a refined content structure and printing cycle that will offer greater editorial coverage around the key points on the industry calendar. We will be moving to a quarterly cycle, based around the key tradeshows of BVE, CABSAT, NAB, Broadcast Asia, and IBC, with two additional supplements offering event-specific round ups post-NAB, and post-IBC.

Our content will expand to include feature interviews, commentaries and technical articles from the leading exponents in the product, technology and engineering sectors, alongside product reviews, user reports and buyers’ guides that will bring you the latest insight into the equipment, accessories and software at the forefront of the affordable, mid-range and high-end markets.

It is a new focus driven by the desire to meet the needs of the modern broadcast media professional, and we sincerely hope that you will share our excitement for what we have in store for 2015. As part of this revamp, we have also built our own standalone website (at last!), which will provide a natural expansion for our unique content, and host a wealth of new reviews, views and analysis. This is scheduled for launch in January, so watch this space for further announcements.

Issue one in 2015 will be published in February in time for BVE, so if you would like to be considered for any editorial coverage or would like to suggest any ideas for content, then please feel free to contact me directly.

So, off into the New Year we go. Have a great festive break everyone, and I’ll see you in 2015.

Just as the elements of the

word ‘transcode’ suggest,

transcoding is the process of

converting a piece of audio

or video media from one

type of encode (compression scheme)

to another. This process has come

to play a critical role in several key

areas of the media delivery workflow.

Within media facilities such as

broadcast stations and post houses,

the ability to transcode file-based

content enables users to assure the

interoperability of media with editing,

storage, processing, and playout

systems across the production and

delivery workflow.

Enabling content producers and

providers to ensure that content meets

the specific format requirements of

different distribution outlets and

target displays, transcoding is also

critical to the delivery of content

across multiple platforms to the

broad array of mobile viewing

devices used today.

With the rise of multi-platform

media delivery has come greater

regulation of the content provided

through such outlets and services.

Many of the quality expectations

applied to traditional television

for years now also apply to multi-

platform viewing. Official standards

and regulatory requirements that

must be met touch on aspects such as

loudness and closed captioning.

At the same time, the exchange

of content among media companies

and service providers is increasingly

being governed by specific guidelines

for numerous parameters defining

content, metadata, and how the two

are packaged together. To meet the

expectations of distribution partners

and target audiences, broadcasters

and other media companies now

require significant additional human

and technical resources. However,

the impact of audience and revenue

fragmentation has been to further

constrain the resources typically

available for multi-platform content

provision. This issue is magnified

by the growing volume of content

produced and delivered across

multiple platforms.

A SIGN OF INTELLIGENCEGiven the scarcity of resources in

relation to programming, technology

manufacturers have moved to provide

more ‘intelligent’ solutions capable of

bringing greater value both

to operations and the business

as a whole. This is how the

concept and practice of media

‘transformation’, much more than

simple transcoding, came to be.

Going beyond the conversion

of one format to another, media

transformation solutions extract,

index, and leverage intelligence to

automate key media management

and processing steps across the

workflow. In so doing, they allow

users to assure — very simply,

quickly, and affordably — that the

audio and video content they ingest,

transcode, edit, and otherwise

transform for distribution retains

its quality and integrity, or even

improves through the application

of appropriate processing. The end

result is an optimised media pipeline

through which the content producer

can maximise the quality of its

assets and outputs.

In practice, the media

transformation workflow can be

used to achieve a wide variety of

outcomes, or even multiple outcomes

simultaneously. Content is typically

stored within a single system or

repository, with a pool of CPU/

GPU resources providing scalable

processing power. Processing

algorithms may be implemented

natively on the media transformation

platform, or they may be best-of-

breed solutions from third-party

vendors specialising in a particular

area of audio and/or video processing.

In either case, these processes

run on a single system, allowing

the user to maximise the value of

commodity IT resources while

minimising investment, integration,

and maintenance costs of discrete

processing systems.

Using the intelligence gathered

on each piece of content, the

media transformation platform

can automate and accelerate the

processing required to hit the target

output parameters. Processing

resources can be applied to multiple

processes at once, with different

‘slices’ of content being

processed simultaneously to

realise a faster-than-real-time

output of content.

In one such scenario, the

solution might normalise the

audio structure, adjust video to

meet broadcast gamut colour

requirements, and ensure that

closed caption data is properly

displayed. Presented with any

set of desired results, the media

transformation solution draws

upon the right combination of

resources to meet the chosen

objective or goal, and is trusted

with a high degree of accuracy.

Henrix’s credits include

a host of smaller budget independent

movies. His television work is equally

impressive, with productions such

as Game of Thrones, Generation Kill

and Black Sails among his long list

of achievements.

Based at Boom Post in the heart

of London’s Soho, he has worked with

iZotope’s RX audio repair system

for many years and regards it as his

‘go to’ software for a wide range of

applications, from dialogue editing

to audio effects.

“I’ve been using RX for around

five years and I would say that it is

tremendously well received: most

dialogue editors that I know in the

film and TV industries are using it,”

explains Henrix. He was first attracted

to RX because of its Spectral Repair

capabilities. “One of the first projects

I used it on had a scene where there

was Dolly noise. It sounded like a zip

wire. In RX, you could see the sound

pattern and visually edit it out. The

director was literally gob-smacked:

he couldn’t believe what I did or the

speed with which I did it.”

BLACK SAILS RECEIVES THE RX TREATMENTMost recently, Henrix has completed

a six-month project working as the

ADR supervisor on hit US TV

series, Black Sails. His role was to

listen to the original eight-track

multi-channel recording and assess

it for ADR requirements. ADR was

recorded worldwide: USA, UK,

South Africa, Australia, and finally

mixed in Los Angeles.

“This is an intensive role,

requiring me to listen to the boom

mic and each actor’s radio mic, which

are conformed as separate channels

on the soundtrack,” says Henrix .

“In one scene in episode two, there

was a lot of background noise and

normally this would have been a

strong candidate for ADR. However,

with RX, I was able to go to that

particular track and manipulate

the audio to clear away all of the

background noise.”

ADR is a costly process requiring

the actors to go back into a studio

and re-record their dialogue. This

happens after the shoot and often

the cast will have moved on to their

next project so it can involve a lot of

scheduling and international travel.

“On Black Sails, RX has saved so

much time and cost. A lot of content

that would normally have gone to

ADR has been repaired in no time

and at a fraction of the cost – these

are two critical factors on any project

irrespective of budgets.”

Looking forward to RX 4,

Henrix was among the first wave of

European RX users to upgrade to

RX 4 Advanced this September and

he is looking forward to some of the

new and unique facilities that it will

offer. “EQ Matching will be another

facility that can save massively on

time and cost,” he says. “Occasionally,

you will have one or two lines of ADR

that need to be re-inserted into the

middle of a scene within the original

soundtrack. This can be very

difficult and time consuming. This

will be a fantastic tool – not just for

the dialogue editor but also for the

re-recording mixer.”

Henrix is also interested in

working with RX 4’s new Ambience

Match module. “In the past,

ambience matching has been a matter

of looping background noise from

one section and using it to fill in

behind another. It’s tedious work,

and the concept of automatically

matching and filling-in to provide a

uniform background noise to mask

the edits is interesting.

“And the focus on ease of use is

music to my ears. Optimising the use

of my time is great and that is what

RX is all about – having a push-pull

fader and a two-bar Denoiser where

you can instantly hear what it is doing

is just so simple and so powerful.

“iZotope’s RX audio repair

system is a fantastic piece of software

that everybody I know raves about.

Why? Because it makes our lives

easier, it saves time and it saves cost,”

concludes Henrix.

According to Ericsson, IBC2014 is

the first time the industry sees the

the company builds on its TV and

broadcast offering with the addition

of recently acquired Azuki Systems,

Microsoft Mediaroom and Red

Bee Media.

At its booth, Ericsson is

demonstrating how it is at the

centre of the convergence of media

and telecoms, which is driving

fundamental industry change.

Ericsson says that it will show

delivery through its capability to

make every network video-centric

and enable TV service providers,

broadcasters and content

how the Mediaroom integration is

How long have you been a

cameraman?

Since I was a child I have been really

passionate about images and sound.

Unfortunately, I had no opportunity

to realise my wishes until later.

At the end of the eighties, the

Spanish TV scene changed

completely. In a few years,

we moved from only two

public TV channels to a set

of more than ten.

New private TV channels and

regional TV stations arrived,

changing the television industry.

It was in 1992 that I had the

opportunity to start work as a news

correspondent and cameraman for

Canal 9, the Comunidad Valenciana

public TV station, that had started its

transmissions in 1989.

How much work do you do in the

UK and Spain, and where else does

your work take you?

The Spanish economic situation

has deeply affected the media in

general and especially newspapers

and TV channels. Many local TV

stations have closed and journalists,

producers and technicians have lost

their jobs. At Canal 9, more than

1,600 professionals were affected

by the closure of the Comunidad

Valenciana public channel.

I was working for years from

Spain with some European TV

production companies, a few of

them based in London. At the

beginning of 2008, I had the

opportunity to start shooting with

Trans World Sport, which for more

than 27 years has been the top global

weekly sports show.

Working there unleashed my

passion for travelling and filming

abroad. Peru, Cambodia, Tanzania,

Iceland, USA, Colombia are some

of the countries I have worked in, as

well as remote places like Ushuaia,

Zanzibar and the Mekong river.

What education and specialist

training have you had?

Basically, I’m self taught, learning

through daily work with passion

and the desire to capture the best

interview, the best shot. Learning to

recognise and then handle ‘light’ is

part of the many different challenges

you face every single day.

If you ask me if I would have

liked to learn more theory and

educational training to improve

my knowledge, the answer

is a definite yes. That’s why I

recommend new generations of

cameramen to learn as much as

they possibly can about this

exciting profession.

What do you think of the current

activity in 4K TV?

When I started my camera career,

Betacam was the broadcast

standard. After a few years, the first

offline models arrived and in a

few more years, the new digital

cameras altered the workflow and

changed our thinking from analogue

to digital. That was really the

big change.

Since then, new cameras with

new standards have been arriving.

Devices with more definition,

more luminosity, which are easier

to use. But essentially, nothing

has changed: if you have a good

camera, good lenses and a good head

on your shoulders, even with a little

phone camera you can capture a

good shot.

I’m sure that the arrival of

the new Blackmagic 4K in its

different versions will be a

revolution due to the image quality,

versatility and price, but the key

will still be the lenses, sound and

the rest of the accessories.

It concerns me that many

production companies have

changed their workflow by using

equipment that’s easier to handle,

leading to a lot of filming by non

professional operators.

This is understandably much

cheaper but can result in a loss

of overall production quality.

Video technology has advanced

dramatically in recent years and the

picture quality is outstanding these

days. However, much as I embrace

all the new equipment on the market

and enjoy using some of the smaller

and lighter cameras, as professional

camera operators we need to

ensure that our work continues

to be appreciated.

What have been your most

interesting assignments?

Recently, I shot in the USA and

many European countries, but in

my opinion the most interesting

trip was to Mexico.

Among other stories, we worked

with the Tarahumaras, a native tribe

in Sierra Madre (Chihuahua State)

with the rare ability to run long

distances, usually more than 100km.

The legendary 50 miles Caballo

Blanco Ultra-Marathon, takes place

every year in the city of Urique,

Chihuahua. Long distance runners

from around the world take part but

the local Tarahumara runners always

come out on top.

I was also selected to work

on the 2014 Brazil World Cup,

as part of the FIFA production

teams, (producer and cameraman)

following the different national

teams during the event.

What camera equipment do you

use most often?

Generally, I use the Sony PDW 700

XDCAM EX as principal camcorder

for features, but it’s not the only one.

I often use the Canon 5D or C-300

as a second camera for interviews,

promos and a light camera kit in

special situations, plus the Go Pro

for filming extreme sports, etc.

What other equipment do

you have access to?

I’m mad for the sliders, mini jibs and

all the other new gadgets to make my

work easier and more creative.

Any gear you wish would be created?

As a Go Pro user, I wish there

was a better system available to

fix the camera easily.

Perhaps something like

an idle arm with a simple click

that allowed me to set the camera

in multiple positions. That would

certianly be a help.

In addition, it would be great

to to see a wireless monitor to

set the frame.

What is the best thing about

your job?

Above all, my profession allows me

to handle the light with a camera,

one of the most fascinating devices

ever invented. Thanks to my job I

can write stories with images: a

really new language.

Plus, I can travel around the world

and get to know interesting people in

their own environment.

What is the worst thing about

your job?

I really miss my family and

friends when I’m abroad.

I enjoy staying at home. Even

when I’m only staying for a

few days, I always tend to settle

into the home routine, which

makes me feel happier.

Dullest and scariest assignments?

Some assignments, like filming

in the Peruvian Andes or in the

centre of Mexico City right in the

middle of an illegal strike, can be

scary at times and this makes

other shoots seem almost a bit

dull. But my work is a way of

understanding life.

What country do you most

like to shoot in?

Every country you go to you

always find something interesting

and surprising, however, I have

a weakness for two of them: Peru

and Iceland. Two really different

countries with extremely different

and interesting cultures but both

with a fascinating nature and

environment. Peru is the old Inca

Empire’s essence in the Andes.

Iceland is the impossible mix of

ice and fire, dominated only by the

northern people’s spirit.

Favourite food?

I must give a special mention to

Peruvian cuisine: Ceviche for any

occasion! The most delicious

dish – pollo con mole negro – is

from Mexico.

Your taste in music?

In general I like traditional music,

especially Spanish. Folk, songwriters,

Flamenco and latin music, I love

hearing and dancing Cuban salsa.

Does any TV company have a trip to

Cuba? I’m available!
