9 June 2011

Welcome Delegates,

On behalf of Cambridge University Technology & Enterprise Club (CUTEC), we would like to welcome you to the 8th Annual Technology Ventures Conference (TVC).

CUTEC has hosted the TVC since 2003 to showcase start-ups and established companies using technology to create successful businesses. At these events, we aim to bring together students, investors and technology professionals so that they can form lasting business part-nerships and be inspired by new ways to take technology to market.

This year’s conference, Ideas Economy: Changing the World by Connecting Ideas, will ser-ve as a platform to explore how human progress relies on the advancement of good ideas. The future success of our nations’ economies depends critically on our ability to generate and harvest ideas that have the potential to create value for society. Transforming society into an Ideas Economy will provide its citizens the infrastructure to create and share their ideas as well as capitalise on the most important asset of all, people. We are delighted to be hosting a series of workshops this year in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline, Mozilla and Shell Springboard to provide delegates with hands-on experience in brainstorming and developing ideas. In addition, the Cambridge Diamond Exhibition and Start-up Showcase will display the latest technologies from well-established companies as well as emerging start-ups.

We would like to thank our speakers, workshop facilitators, investor panelists, and the delegates for their participation and input in shaping the conference. We are also extre-mely grateful to our sponsors and advisors, who have kindly supported us and our efforts throughout the year.

We hope you enjoy TVC 2011!

The future success of our nations economy depends critically on their ability to generate and harvest ideas that create value in the society we live in. Ideas Economy is that which we live in today, an economy capitalising around the most fundamental resource of all – people. The ability to engage the brightest minds and connect them altogether is crucial in overcoming the biggest challenges facing our nations. Invention and innovation are no longer driven by the small but exceptional few. They are the product of extensive collaboration and synergy of increasingly diverse expertise crossing company and nation borders.

Cambridge high-tech inventions are world renowned and constantly shaping the global society. However open innovation has increased with the ease of the internet allowing for increased communication and connectivity between industries and companies. Open innovation and the internet are two examples of how ‘Ideas without borders’ can be implemented. How do high-technologies and clusters fit in with this trend?

TVC2011 will address the importance of Ideas Economy, specifically the process of implementing this as well as examine the effect in high tech clusters including Cambridge. It will provide delegates the opportunity to understand the concept, its benefits and appli-cable scenarios through direct engagement, connectivity of ideas, and problem solving at a networking level. Finally, TVC 2011 will aim to provide delegates a platform to create new ideas, form new business relationships and most importantly - catalyse inspiration.

The topics addressed in the conference will be of high interest for investors, professionals, and entrepreneurial-minded students who are interested in exploring investment opportunities generated behind the concept of Ideas Economy, and the benefits of implemen-ting this to increase existing and future ventures.

Creativity Game: Design The Box

In this session we’re going to play a creativity game called ‘design the box’. This game helps bring stake-holders together to make and document important decisions about project vision without dropping into a meeting coma. This technique can be applied at all stages of the product development lifecycle to almost any product or service you can imagine (especially those that don’t actually fit into boxes!) You will learn how to play and facilitate the game for use in your own projects.

Workshops - Shell Springboard

Worksho

ps

Shell Springboard is a programme that provides a financial boost to in-novative, low carbon business ideas from across the UK. Since launch in 2005, Shell has awarded £1.92 million to 53 businesses among over 900 applications from small business owners from all over the UK.

The programme has also commissioned research that explored the at-titudes of small businesses to climate change and the business opportunity in the UK and global low carbon markets. Businesses su-pported by Shell Springboard then embark on a journey to further develop their ideas, bring new products to market, increase their profit margins but most importantly, help to reduce greenhouse gases.

Workshop

This workshop will provide the attendees with an opportunity to explore what support is required to enable small and medium sized businesses to best exploit the low carbon market in the UK. The attendees will brainstorm and discuss solutions for the problems such businesses are facing. The guest moderator of the workshop is Miss Jennifer Marsden of Shell International who manages Shell Springboard.

Jennifer will bring the Shell Springboard winners to the workshop, so the atten-dees of this workshop will have the chan-ce to meet beneficiaries of Shell Spring-board, consider realistic problems, and discuss practical solutions.

Jennifer Marsden is Social Investment Programme Manager at Shell International. She manages two UK national social inves-tment programmes as part of Shell’s voluntary contribution to the UK. Shell Livewire supports and rewards young entrepre-neurs and Shell Springboard provides no strings £40k awards to UK-based SMEs in the UK.

Workshops - GlaxoSmithKline/ceedd

Worksho

ps

In order to access the best in the world innovation, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) established a team of about 20 drug discovery scientists in 2005 - the Centre of Excellence for External Drug Discovery (ceedd - www.ceedd.com). The ceedd was the first team in GSK R&D to be truly externally focused with no internal programs to manage, working across all therapy areas, tasked to form multi-program, risk reward sharing alliances with biotech companies. We are looking for innovative scientific platforms and compounds through our collaborations and nurturing them to their full potential to provide differentiated me-dicines that will deliver significant benefits to patients.

We have nine ongoing collaborations, and in five years have successfully transitioned three assets at clinical proof of concept into GSK for further development. A ceedd alliance can include programs starting at any point in development from target to clinical proof of concept (PoC). Ideally these programs will be generated from an innovative platform technology and GSK will have an exclusive right to option these programs at clinical PoC. This is a very different approach to classical in-licensing which tends to focus on single products, which are often much later in development, and brought immediately into GSK for further development.

Our team, based in two geographical centres in the U.K. and the U.S, has extensive experience in drug discovery and development. We are experts in the fields of biology, chemistry, preclinical and clinical development, and project and alliance management. Our multidisciplinary specialists also have commercial and investment responsibility, allowing for a close working relationship scientifically and operationally with our biotech partners. We are looking for innovation, wherever it may originate!

Workshop

The workshop is designed to help us with new ways of thinking about the contractual and financial aspects of collaborations with Biotech companies, in the light of the current challenges in funding, particularly in the UK. How can we work with a young Biotech company or University Spin-Out to help them get beyond the early seed/series A funding, while delivering something of value to GSK?

Concept of Technology Showcase

Technology Showcase is an essential part of the Technology Ventures Conference. It runs in parallel to keynote speeches, lunch break (peak visibility) and workshops throughout the con-ference day. Technology Showcase provides an opportunity for young and fresh companies to demonstrate their new and ex-citing technologies to conference attendees from various back-grounds: business and technology professionals, entrepreneurs and scientists. All showcased companies are invited to compete for a prize of “The most promising start-up 2011”. The best few young com-panies are selected by conference attendees and professional investors to enter the Dragons’ Den competition at the final part of the conference. The winner is awarded a valuable monetary and/or consultancy prize. We are looking for start-ups who are at the forefront of emer-ging technology applications, be it by the invention of novel tech-nology, or by opening up a niche market with careful application of the existing or recently realised technology.

Great ideas at Cambridge Apprentice help companies to solve problems

What keeps entrepreneurs awake at night? How to identify customer needs, how to design products, how to innovate – all these aspects come into mind. Every entrepreneur is constantly faced with a large number of problems at a time.

To apply and enhance problem solving skills is what Cambridge Apprentice is all about. On 26th February, about 60 students from very diverse backgrounds came together to work in teams on challenges posed by Nokia Research, Cambridge Temperatu-re Concept, FrontlineSMS, MagicSolver, SocialBrillience and Mills&Reeve. Inspired and supported by high-calibre mentors, the teams developed their ideas within a very short period of time. A representative from Nokia Research noted: “As far as our cha-

llenge goes, we were struck by how quickly and competently the students were able to grasp the brief presented to them and henceforth formulate a coherent plan for the pitch. Their organisation and ability to work so quickly must be a testament to the skills acquired through being involved with CUTEC”. The mentors were also impressed by the quality and enthusiasm of all participants.

Cambridge Apprentice was once again an excellent opportunity to get first-hand experience of entrepreneu-rial team problem solving. Many of this year’s attendees will have a lot of great ideas on their mind when they are awake at night.

28 March 2011 14:47MedImmune bootcamp breaks the mould

A groundbreaking “experiment” in which one of the world’s fo-remost biotechs laid itself bare to teams of students as part of an open innovation competition has been hailed as an unqualified suc-cess. The MedImmune Open Innovation Event took place earlier this month, with students collaborating with senior management from the biotech to try to find innovative answers to one of eight key challenges faced by the business.

The final pitches took place on March 17, with a team of students working on ways to measure the transport of protein drugs into the brain taking the top prize of £500 in cash. Key to the success

of the event, according to organiser, Lukasz Mlodyszewski, director of innovation at Cambridge University Technology and Enterprise Club (CUTEC), was MedImmune’s willingness to participate without the need for non-disclosure agreements and also to make company directors available to mentor the teams.

MedImmune’s global VP of R&D, Bahija Jallal also took part in the event as a judge for the final pitches, along with Andy Williams, Jon Green and Jane Osbourn - all members of the leadership team for MedImmune’s Cambridge facility.“This is the first event of its kind as far as I am aware and for that reason it was a bit of an experiment,” said Mlodyszewski. “MedImmune themselves told me that an event like this would not have been possible five or ten years ago, but we are definitely the beneficiaries of that change in culture as a num-ber of close relationships were formed and we’re hopeful that the exercise will create some tangible results for both students and company.

Under and postgraduate students from Cambridge University and Anglia Ruskin University took part in the event. The majority came from a biochemistry background although students from economics, linguistics and management courses also attended.

The Future Of Running Business

On the 30th of March, a panel discussion organised by CUTEC and sponsored by GJE took place at the University of Cambridge. The event brought students and business practitioners together to discuss and un-derstand how the future of running business might look like.

High-profile entrepreneurs formed a panel and dis-cussed the most prominent challenges in running bu-sinesses and how to turn challenges into competitive advantages.

The panel included: - Stephen Haley, Partner at GJE, IT & Engineering- Philip Harris, Partner at GJE, Trademarks- Jason Pinto, Investment Manager at Amadeus Capital, IT & Engineering- Nigel Pitchford, Partner at DFJ Esprit, Life Sciences- Bobby Rao, former Vodafone’s Director of Marketing and New Business for Internet Services

The discussion focused on the changes brought by rapidly increasing connectivity, social media boom and the rise of open innovation. Experts in intellectual property, marketing and business strategy approached these topics from different angles which lead to a lively and well-balanced debate.

A networking event at Brown’s restaurant rounded off the evening. All attendees were extremely pleased to meet successful entrepreneurs from various fields, to discuss business challenges in a relaxed atmosphere and to take advantage of the networking opportunities provided.

12 May 20118th Technology Ventures Conference shows new ways of driving innovationHigh profile Cambridge conference features Virgin Galactic, Procter & Gamble, Seymour Powell and ARM

Ideas for advancing economies and growing businesses are no longer developed just within organisations. Given the rapidly changing environments in which companies operate, innovations are increasingly sourced through external networks. The forthcoming Technology Ventures Conference 2011 will demonstrate how this new “Ideas Economy” works and how it can be applied to solve a variety of problems. This year, the Technology Ventures Confe-rence will be held on 9th June in Cambridge. Confirmed Speakers include George Whitesides (CEO, Virgin Galactic), Mike Addison (Section Head R&D, Procter & Gamble and Ted Shelton (CEO, Open First). The event will be moderated by Rory Cellan-Jones (BBC) and David Rowan (WIRED magazine).

The highly interactive conference will bring together leading innovators, professionals and students to un-leash the power of connecting ideas. Workshops on a variety of topics such as Healthcare, Open Innova-tion and Cleantech are supported by high-profile conference partners: GlaxoSmithKline, Mozilla and Shell Springboard. “Cambridge is at the forefront of innovation and technology, not least because of its strength in interdisciplinary collaboration”, says Vivian Chan, President of CUTEC, the organisers of the event. “The Technology Ventures Conference is a great opportunity to learn about the future of problem solving, how any organisation can innovate through collaboration and how connecting ideas can change the world.”

In addition, this year’s event will include the Cambridge Diamond Exhibition which features well-established, Cambridge-based companies such as ARM, MedImmune, Redgate and Plastic Logic. Technology start-ups will compete in a separate session and present their ideas to a panel of investors. Finalists will win business development advice from industry experts such as BDO, Keltie and MartinBloom, among others.
