Kakadu

Sunday, 20 October 2013

In the final episode of this epic series, monsoon torrents wash away the heat during the season the Aboriginal people of Kakadu call Gudjewg.

With the storms comes unpredictable mayhem every day: floodwaters rise, feral buffalo stalk unwary tourists, locals get washed towards crocodile-infested waters, and savage winds flatten trees - choking kilometres of access roads.

Amid the cavalcade of chaos the people of Kakadu go about life and work in this ancient wilderness.

Sam (Don Hany) is uncomfortable as he and Kang (Alaric Tay) take a delegation upriver which includes his lover Claire (Maeve Dermody) and her husband Frank (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor). By including newspaper journo 'Macca' (Tony Martin), Frank's boss Maxwell Black (Nicholas Bell) is using the trip as a PR exercise to promote the hospital his company has built in the village to provide medicine in return for commercial rights.

Claire discovers the medicines aren't working, but when she questions Maxwell, he shuts her down, and, to her humiliation, Frank doesn't support her. Sam decides to have a sample tested, and discovers the malaria medicine has been massively diluted. When Claire insists Maxwell send new drugs, he tasks her with the job, and hires the Cheng agency to find the source of the contamination.

But when Claire returns to the village to find a young boy has died, she realises that Black was never really interested in the health of the kids. So, to find and expose those involved, she goes to Macca with her story. When the ex-pat community realises she is his source, they snub her, and Maxwell demotes Frank.

Sam and Patricia (Joan Chen) figure out how the scam is working, and Kang tracks down the lab where the drugs are diluted. Sam involves the police to arrest the boat captain distributing the drugs, but when Insp. Amran (Ario Bayu) lets the captain go, Sam learns that he is being protected by Maj. Miller (Shane Briant) and Special Branch in return for information.

Autopsy On A Dream

Sunday, 20 October 2013

Autopsy On a Dream, a controversial and provocative BBC film about the building of the Sydney Opera House, directed by John Weiley in 1968 and thought to be lost for 45 years, will have its first Australian television screening on Sunday October 20 at 9.25pm ABC1.

Weiley was commissioned to direct and produce the film by the then BBC Two Controller David Attenborough. A dramatic story of the building's construction and architect Jorn Utzon's ultimate departure from the project, the film caused controversy from the outset.

The ABC tried to stop it being made and after its BBC screening in 1968, Weiley was advised the film had been destroyed on a chopping block in the BBC archive.

Miraculously for John, a mute print of the film was rediscovered in a BBC vault this year by an ABC researcher on the Sydney Opera House Project http://theoperahouseproject.com. As it turned out only the soundtrack was destroyed. Having kept the transcripts and sound, Weiley and his team have put the original film back together.

Weiley has also created a new prologue called 'The Dream of Perfection' telling the fascinating story of the lost film and bringing the story up-to-date, featuring interviews with Sir David Attenborough, Jan and Lin Utzon - the sons of Jorn Utzon, and architect Richard le Plaistrier, plus many others.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Autopsy On A Dream (90 min) is directed by John Weiley and the remastered film is produced by John Maynard for Felix Media with the support of the BBC, Screen Australian and ABC Arts.

The Art of Australia: Strangers In A Strange Land

Tuesday, 22 October 2013 New SeriesThe Art of Australia is a stunning three-part landmark series on how art and artists helped to shape Australia's national identity.

Edmund Capon, former Art Gallery of New South Wales director, uncovers the story of how art and artists played their part in this country's cultural and historical development.

The series weaves together the story of the Indigenous and European art traditions in Australia, from the colonial past to the modern day. Edmund Capon looks at the work of significant artists, both past and present, to reveal much about who Australians are and where they have come from.

The series, which is filmed around the country, explains how through colonisation, the gold rushes, industrialisation and two world wars, art helped shape Australia and continues to do so. It is a dramatic tale that shows how art helped to create a distinctive Australian identity.

Episode one, Strangers in a Strange Land (screening October 22) tells the story of how art helped European settlers come to terms with an unfamiliar land. In episode two, Coming of Age (screening October 29) Edmund explores how Australia identity evolved in the 20th century and how modern art down under struggled to emerge. In Beyond Australia, episode three (screening November 5), Edmund explores how, since the 1960s, Australia and its art went global.

Tractor Monkeys: School

Wednesday, 23 October 2013

Join host Merrick Watts and team captains Dave O'Neil and Monty Dimond as they go back through time to celebrate Australia at its best and best forgotten, during the hilarious new season of the comedy quiz show Tractor Monkeys (9 x 30').

With Merrick at the helm, Dave and Monty will heroically lead some of Australia's favourite comedians and entertainers. Stepping up to reminisce this season are Noeline Brown, Shane Jacobson, Glenn Robbins, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Marcia Hines, Hannah Gadsby, Denise Scott, Daryl Braithwaite, Sammy J, Tom Ballard and many more.

New to this season are themed episodes. From fashion, love and family to technology, sport and leisure - and of course TV - Tractor Monkeys is now much more about the personal stories that the archive gold inspires, as the teams tap into both shared experiences and their own surprising anecdotes.

Guests: Daryl Braithwaite and Celia Pacquola on Dave's team and Cal Wilson and Mikey Robins on Monty's team.

Ah, school days! If they really are the best days of our lives then why do we always look so awkward in our school photos? But in amongst all those stories of sour milk, daggy uniforms and smoking by the creek are the enduring friendships, the inspiring teachers and memories of a time when we were fit enough to play hopscotch for a whole hour.

Daryl Braithwaite talks about how you deal with decades of obsessive fans and he also talks about what it was like to be in the school choir with Olivia Newton-John! Cal Wilson relives the crippling embarrassment of uniform malfunction, whilst Celia Pacquola shows us just how good a finger painter she is. Be surprised when Mikey Robins reveals that he was a really good milk monitor and unsurprised when he tells us he was expelled. And wait till you see the knitted orange outfit that Merrick wore on his first day of school!

Redesign My Brain with Todd Sampson: Mind Over Matter

Thursday, 24 October 2013 FinalSee Australian television personality Todd Sampson put brain training to the test as he undergoes a radical brain makeover in a three-part documentary series on the revolutionary new science of brain plasticity.

The cutting edge science has found that anyone can become smarter, improve their memory and reverse mental ageing with the right brain training. It can turn an ordinary brain into a super brain in just three months.

In the final episode of his journey, non-swimmer Sampson faces his greatest fear - being chained, handcuffed and blindfolded underwater with only his radically improved brain to help him escape. In just four weeks he must learn the skills required to survive the challenge of his life.

With help from competitive free diver Ant Williams, Sampson increases his capacity to hold his breath from 30 seconds to an incredible three minutes. Escape artist and modern-day Houdini, Alexanderia the Great, trains him to relax, control his fear and resist the impulse to draw breath underwater - critical to his survival if he's to free himself from locks, handcuffs and chains.

Sampson's radical brain makeover is complete and his processing speed, attention control, co-ordination and memory are near perfect. After three months of brain training, he is mentally and physically prepared. But no one is certain he can do it.

Catalyst: Heart Of The Matter (Part 2)

For the last 40-odd years we've been told that saturated fat clogs our arteries and that high cholesterol causes heart disease. It has spawned a multi-billion dollar drug and food industry, with aggressive marketing of ‘cholesterol free’ products that promise to lower our cholesterol and decrease our risk of heart disease.

But what if it isn't true? What if you were told that it's never been proven that saturated fat causes heart disease? What if you were told that the majority of the millions of people around the world taking drugs to lower their cholesterol won't in fact live any longer?

In this special two-part edition of Catalyst, Dr Maryanne Demasi investigates the science behind the long established claims that saturated fat causes heart disease by raising cholesterol.

In this second episode, Dr Demasi uncovers the tactics used by drug companies to distort the data to make cholesterol lowering medications seem more effective than they are.
