DOCUMENTARY

Amma & Appa Franziska from Bavaria loves Jay from India. While for many mothers and fathers this would be a happy situation, the relationship is a mild catastrophe for both sets of parents. For Amma and Appa – Tamil for “mother and father” – from southern India, a marriage is something that’s always been arranged. “If you marry for love, then we’ve lost everything,” they say to their son Jay. For Franziska’s parents from Bavaria too, their daughter’s Indian boyfriend at least takes some getting used to. For a year, Amma and Appa ignore Franziska in the hope that their son will see sense and marry an Indian girl. Only then is Franziska allowed to visit them in India. But Amma and Appa remain skeptical. Maybe they should simply meet a couple who’ve been happy together for decades “despite” marrying for love, thinks Franziska. And so her parents take the brave step of visiting their son-in-law’s coun-try for the first time. DW broadcasts the two-part documentary Amma & Appa – An Indo-Bavarian Love Story.

IN GOOD SHAPE

COPD – A Deadly Cough Few people are aware of COPD. This despite World Health Organization claims that the seri-ous lung disease affects some 64 million people worldwide. The WHO predicts that the ill-ness will become the third leading cause of death by the year 2030. The abbreviation COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In sufferers, the lungs age more quickly because airways are inflamed and gradually become permanently constricted. The main cause in industrial nations is smoking, while elsewhere other risk factors include air pol-lution or cooking over open fires. There is no cure for COPD, but the progression of the ill-ness can be delayed. And the quality of life of those afflicted can be significantly improved – using some astonishingly simple methods. Dr. Carsten Lekutat explains what these are on In Good Shape.

DOCUMENTARY

Maidan Dreaming The pro-European Maidan Revolution in Ukraine swept away the pro-Russian re-gime of Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. Today, many of the revolutionaries are disillu-sioned. Corruption is still rife, the old oli-garchs are still pulling the new strings. But a creative scene in civil society and culture continues to fuel the spirit of the Maidan movement, which looks to the West for ideas and inspiration.

EUROMAXX

The Radical Eye As a pop star with snazzy outfits and big hits – that’s how most of us know Sir Elton John. But few people know that the musi-cian is also an art collector who owns some key photographic pieces. Sir Elton’s collec-tion will be put on public show this fall, at London’s Tate Modern. The exhibition

“The Radical Eye” comprises some 150 pho-tos from the 1920s to the 1950s, including works by Man Ray, André Kertész and Alexander Rodtschenko. Euromaxx pres-ents the highlights of the exhibition.
