Charm Pack Quilt BlocksIf you are like me whenever you go into a fabric store you are

overwhelmed by choices, especially of a new fabric shipment just came in. Iseem to always want what's new. No matter when I fabric shop I always seemto wind up with a handful of charm packs. I use them for color ideas andinspiration. Charm packs are usually less than $10.00 and have up to 42 pieceof 5x5 fabric. The fabric swatches represent the entire fabric line by a specifi

artist or designer. Now I have created a collection to uses these charm packs. There are 15 different quilt blocks that all use the charm pack swatches.

If you have ever been frustrated by traditional piecing fear no more. All ofthe piecing for the quilt blocks in this collection is done in your embroidery hooThe quilting possibilities are endless. You simply place the fabric down, stitchfolding line, fold the fabric and stitch it in place! They are that easy to create. The tutorial will show you ways to repeat and rotate each block to create acomplete quilt with every design. We will also show you how to combine thedesigns together for even more detailed quilts.

Notes on Sizesre are 3 different ways that you can use this collection. The first way is to use only charm packs for the quilt. You will be able te a 20x20 quilt out of a 42 square charm pack. So if you want a bigger project you will need to use multiple packs. Also

ause of the variety of fabric in a charm pack the finished blocks may be tricky to arrange. The second way is by combiningrm packs with pieces of fabric. The photos below show you two different samples of this. We used a charm pack with a piece od fabric from the line so that when combined each block has a common element. The third way os to use fabric yardage for yole project forgoing the charm packs all together. By doing this you will be able to create quilts where every block is the same ay to create a patter. The tutorial shows examples of all three ways to use this collection.rm packs are all 5x5 some come with 42 squares, while some may come with 24 and so on. The amount of fabric in a line w

rmine how many blocks you will get out of a charm pack. I am sure that whatever method you use you will have wonderfullts. The following pages will show you everything you need to know to create the Charm Pack Quilt Blocks.ve Wilson

    Charm Pack Quilt Blocks

This is an example of a project that uses a single charm pack. The finished size is 20x20. Youwill notice that not many of the fabrics are repeated.

In this example we used a charm pack with a yard of corresponding fabric. You wind up with a muchlarger quilt and the corresponding fabric adds continuity to each block.

To start hoop a piece of muslin along with the NoShow Mesh Stabilizer. Stitch out step one, this is thsquaring stitch. Once the squaring stitch is completplace a piece of warm and natural batting inside thesquare. The batting should be cut to the size of thesquaring stitch. Once it is in place stitch the nextstep, this is the tacking stitch. This stitch will tackyour batting in place.

Stitch the next step in the design. This is theplacement stitch for your first piece of fabric.

Lay your first piece of fabric down(decorative side

up) so that it completely covers. The placementstitch and stitch the next step in the design. This wtack your first piece of fabric in place. The remaindof the appliques use the folded fabric techniquewhich consists of three steps. Make sure you alwaleave at least of fabric extending outside thesquaring stitch. Don't forget this is your seamallowance. Always match your thread to the colorthe fabric.

We devised a way to cut down on fabric usage. Instead of cutting a large piece of fabric as your base tooop you are going to hoop a piece of inexpensive muslin or cotton. You will then use your base fabric as applique. It is a very simple technique and it eliminates fabric wastage. You will also not need to center youesigns before cutting your blocks, this is all done in the design itself. You projects will be done in half theme!

ere is what you will need for each block to start the project.muslin and Floriani No Show Mesh cut to the size of your embroidery hoop

Warm and Natural cut to the size of your block - example 3.25 x 3.25Your base fabric cut to 1 larger than your design - example 4.5 x 4.5

Stitch the next step in the design. This is theplacement stitch, it will show you the exact shape othe applique.

Lay your next applique fabric face down so that of it extends past the top of the placementstitch. The dotted line indicates where theplacement stitch is. You can use tape or sprayadhesive to hold it in place if you need to.

Stitch the next step of the design. This is thefolding line. It will stitch across the fabric.

Fold your fabric over so that it is now face up. Thfolding line that just stitched will allow you to acha perfect fold. Again you can tape it in place if yothink its necessary.

Stitch the next step in the design. This will tack thefolded fabric in place. The dotted line to the leftindicates how this stitch will look. Always match yothread to the color of the fabric.

You will now repeat these steps for the nextapplique there are between 2 and 6 appliques ineach design. When you are finished you have a qublock that looks like you pieced it in the traditionalmanner.

Using your ruler and rotary cutter trim the blocksleaving a seam allowance around the outside.

This what each block should look like trimmed.

Before you sew the blocks together you need to linthem up along the outside stitched lines. Pin themtogether to insure accurate sewing.

Sew the blocks together in the same way you woupiece a quilt. Sew right along the squaring stitchlines in the block.

This is what two blocks will look like when pieced

You want to press your seams flat after each blockto insure accurate sewing. You would repeat thesesteps for the entire quilt.

Now it is time to add our back fabric and stitch in ditch. Since your batting was added under eachblock there is no need to add additional batting. Cyour back piece of fabric so that it extends pasthe edges of the quilt.

Stitch in the ditch between each of the blocks.

Add your binding, we used another fabric from theline, this is optional you could also use a solid. We

    used a finished binding.

The final step is to stitch in the ditch of the bindingYoure finished!!!

This tutorial originally appeared in GardeGate. The techniques used in thiscollection are exactly the same.
