Avignonesi is located in south-eastern Tuscany

surrounding the hill town of Montepulciano, home

to Italy’s first DOCG red wine, Vino Nobile di

Montepulciano.

Conceived in 1974 and named after a member of the

founding family, Avignonesi was purchased in 2009

by Virginie Saverys, who has worked tirelessly since

then to convert the entire property to organic and

biodynamic viticulture.

Her goal has been to craft distinctive, genuine wines, all

100% estate grown, that fully express the special traits

of every single vintage and the singular characteristics

of the Avignonesi terroir.

Through the support of ultramodern technology

and an International young team of winemakers

and agronomists, Avignonesi continuously renews

its commitment to excellence and quality, focusing

its efforts on producing DOCG wines made of 100%

Our Nobile has always mirrored the best of what our region offers, being the result of a pure Sangiovese sourced from all our different vineyard plots. With this project, instead, we give voice to each single identity, crafting a multifaceted palette of our most original Sangiovese expressions, listening to their own, special story.

Each wine tells its own territory. In this story the land is Tuscany and to be precise a well-defined area of hills between Siena, the Val di Chiana and Lake Trasimeno and the protagonists are the Prugnolo Gentile, as Sangiovese is renamed here, and its winemakers.

The voice is that of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano one of the oldest and most esteemed oenological expressions in Italy, an engaging and nuanced wine. Its long history is studded with awards, but in 2015 for a group of passionate, tenacious and visionary producers, the time has come to tell it in a new way.

They are Avignonesi, Boscarelli, Dei, La Braccesca, Poliziano and Salcheto. Together they created Alliance Vinum and based on their experience, they joined together to offer the world another reference Sangiovese.

Today they present a collection of new great Nobile wines created with the intention of honoring the identity of the territory and telling the exceptional peculiarities of the appellation.

Avignonesi created his Nobile Poggetto di Sopra from the heart of the historic estate on the Argiano hill from 37-year-old vines.

100% SANGIOVESE

At Avignonesi, striving for excellence goes hand in hand with experimenting with 100% Tuscan wine-making processes. The intention is to allow the habi-tat to prevail over foreign influences. For this particular wine, Avignonesi has put aside steel and oak in favour of Tuscan clay.The name Da-Di, Chinese word for “land, soil”, was chosen to underline this particularity.

Da-Di is vinified in 11 terracotta amphorae made in Tuscany - 6 were made by Artenova in Impruneta and 5 were made by the San Rocco Laboratory in Torrita di Siena using clay from Monte Amiata.

This wine is made up of one third of whole bunches and two thirds of whole berries. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeast, followed by a daily manual reassembly program.

Da-Di is blended after three months, then returned to the amphora for a further aging period of two months before bottling.

A huge white chianina bull that lived on the Avignonesi estate in the 19th century, Desiderio earned his place in history for being the largest bull at his time with an impressive weight of 1,600 kg / 3,500 lb.

For the last quarter of a century, Desiderio has adorned the label of the Avignonesi Merlot, as a testimony to this wine’s origins, and as a symbol of its powerful, yet sensuous character.

With vintage 2013 we celebrate Desiderio’s 25th anniversary, reviving an old tradition by which each vintage of Desiderio had its own special label.
