Griffin was appointed as a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Alabama Huntsville. “For me, the single overarching goal of human space flight is the human settlement of the solar system, and eventually beyond.” Griffin said. Griffin was formerly a rocket scientist at the Applied Physics Laboratory of John Hopkins University. He held a leading role in space missions at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, but describes himself as “a simple aerospace engineer from a small town.” “Landing on the moon was a symbol of America doing the impossible.” Griffin said, “40 years later and we can’t do it.” Griffin said that most other human achievements have progressed from their starting point. He cited Lewis and Clark’s expedition across America, noting that 40 years later roads were opening up across the country, whereas, the United States has no vehicle at present with which to revisit the moon. “In a couple of years the space shuttle will be retired and the only way the United States will have for going to the international space station will be on a Russia rocket.” Griffin lamented. Griffin noted that the Obama administration is studying the future mission of NASA, but that at present funding levels the manned exploration of space will be impossible. “Our mission should be to return to the moon, establish a base, learn how to use the resources there, and use them to travel to Mars.” Griffin has the vision outlined for NASA, but now the nation must seize his vision for it to happen. EDITOR’S COMMENTS...

There’s a good thing about hitting bottom. There’s no where to go but up. And that appears to be what has happened with the economy. The federal reserve has announced that the recession is over. This doesn’t mean the economy has returned to boom times, it just means it doesn’t appear to be going any lower. The “down” has being taken out. There is a group of people who have not missed a lick of income. They had jobs that never had an hour or pay cut, and they just kept on making money throughout these times as if nothing had happened. They were worried things would get bad for them, to lose their income, and they started saving for a rainy day….just in case the “thing” got to them. Now, as the economy edges up slightly, and over time, these people will stop worrying about putting aside more for a rainy day, assume the sun is returning, and they’ll start spending again. As they increase their spending they will force the hiring, or rehiring, of others in the economy. These people, pleased to have just gotten a job, and also assuming they got their job due to an expanding economy, will also spend. After a time the economy improves to where things have built up a good head of steam...and the economic woes of 2008 and 2009 will fade into history. This is how recoveries occur. I lived through the 1980 and 1981 recession as an automobile dealer. The process that I have just described about how things will return to normal is what happened way back then. It’s an economic cycle that has occurred and recurred time and time again over the history of man, and our nation. It’s not just “economics”, this occurs in nature. Feast or famine it’s called. A long drought is a recession, and a rain soaked spring is an expansion. Our nation and individuals are supposed to prepare for the period of drought in times of feast. Yet in our times of feast we, as a nation, have consumed our entire harvests, and borrowed harvest from others with a promise to pay them back. Today the average American family owes $100,000 in debt through it’s own government. Some have tried to stand up to this insanity, but most have stood idly by for the past 30+ years as this debt has been expanded. In times of drought it is not a good time to spare the plants water that you have...this has forced our government to rely on even more borrowing in this economic drought. Our government should have been using up it’s savings, rather than borrowing, to keep the system going in tough times. A lot of blame is laid upon the administration of today, and they may bear part of the responsibility. But the cold hard truth is that we all, in sum total, bear the responsibility of allowing what has happened to happen over the past many, many years. Now comes the spring, the promise of it anyway. Over the next couple of years our economy will being to grow again, and we will have, once again, the opportunity to live within our means and to get our house in order as individuals and as a nation. But, will we? We are not in revolt, but now, and coming, is a time for activism.Mike Woodard, PublisherTuscaloosa Sun

Cooking With CandyRecipes From Candy Taylor

1-2 rolls pizza doughluncheon meatcheesebutterspices (parsley, garlic salt, basil)Parmesan cheese

I was looking for something to make a late night snack for my husband and some friends one night. I through together these calzones and they were a hit. You can use whatever spices or ingredents you want, just make it yours and enjoy.

1. Cut the pizza dough into 6 or so slices.2. Melt butter, add spices and parmesan cheese to butter. Spoon/brush butter onto dough.3.Place meat and cheese on one end of dough, then roll dough from that end, pinch the seams together. 4. Spoon/brush remaining butter over top.5. Place on cookie sheet, bake about 15-20 minutes at 350.

Children’s Corner

(NU) - Perhaps more so thanmany adults, tweens worry aboutglobal warming and pollution. Now, many of these youth areready to bring change to their fam-ilies, schools and communities.

According to a recent Boys &Girls Clubs of America (BGCA)and Staples Foundation for Learn-ing (SFFL) survey of more than1,200 youths, ages 11-13, 92 per-cent of tweens said they are “veryconcerned” or “somewhat con-cerned” about the environment.Nearly half recycle or reuse theirfood and drink containers, and 40percent would watch less televi-sion and play fewer video gamesto save energy.

One example, Florida’s Edge-water Boys & Girls Club TorchClub, was named a winner of the“Be Great. Be Green” NationalProject Award for the Club’s ef-forts to educate members aboutenvironmental stewardship andsustainability of resources, whilealso motivating neighbors to takeaction. Awarded by BGCA andSFFL, the national award is de-signed to raise awareness aboutenvironmental issues and motivateyouth, educators and parents totake action.

“We all know how importantit is to protect our country’s nat-ural resources so they can be en-joyed for generations to come,”said Camille Winbush, an actressbest known for her roles on “TheSecret Life of An AmericanTeenager” and “The Bernie MacShow,” and a judge of the “BeGreat, Be Green” award. “Whenyouth are educated about envi-ronmental issues, they become in-volved in their communities andare able to make big changes.”

Along with SFFL, BGCAwants parents, educators and chil-dren to take a tiny green step bybeing on the lookout for green of-fice and school supplies through-out the year:• Recycled pencils. The goodold No. 2 isn’t going anywhereanytime soon, but now you canfind recycled pencils. Made fromsome of the billions of scrappedtires in stockpiles today, the RE-NEW Recycled Tire Pencil’s cas-ing is made from 30 percent recy-cled tires. With a No. 2 graphitecore, the pencil also contains bio-degradable latex-free erasers.• Eco-friendly pens. If you’remore of a pen person, be on thelookout for recycled andbiodegradable versions by Pilot orIndustries of the Blind.• Re-binders. No student can getthrough the school year without abinder. Recycled binders from Re-Binder are not only eco-friendly,but sturdy and cheap.

(NU) - Each year, 500,000women worldwide develop cer-vical cancer. Around 300,000women die from the disease. Andyet, cervical cancer is preventable– regular screening, along withvaccination, could prevent nearlyevery case.

To help women protect them-selves, the European CervicalCancer Association (ECCA),along with partners in the UnitedStates, recently launched the Pearlof Wisdom Campaign to PreventCervical Cancer. The campaignteaches women how to protecttheir health through regularscreening and other measures. The campaign also promotes thePearl of Wisdom as the globalsymbol for cervical cancer pre-vention.

What is cervical cancer? Can-cer can develop in any part of thebody, including the cervix – thelower, narrow part of a woman’suterus. The human papillomavirus(HPV), a common, sexually trans-mitted virus, causes cervical can-cer. Most HPV infections go awaywithout symptoms or treatment, but certain high-risk types of HPVcan cause the cervix to produceabnormal cells, which can even-tually become cancerous.

Why screening? Screeninghelps find abnormal cervical cellsbefore they become cancerous. When caught early, these abnor-mal cells can be easily removedto prevent cancer from develop-ing. Cervical cancer doesn’t havesymptoms until the disease reach-es advanced stages, so womenshould be screened regularly allthrough their life, even if they feelhealthy.

The Pap test looks for abnor-mal cervical cells. The HPV testdetects high-risk types of HPV,which can lead to abnormal cer-vical cells. In women 30 and old-er, the Pap and HPV tests togeth-er provide the best screeningprotection against cervical cancer.

Girls and young women canbe vaccinated against the twomost common cancer-causingHPV types – 16 and 18 – whichare responsible for about 70 per-cent of cervical cancers. Studieshave shown that vaccination ishighly effective at preventing cer-vical disease. However, vaccina-tion does not protect against allhigh-risk HPV types. “Evenwomen who have been vaccinat-ed must be screened to protectagainst cervical cancer caused bythe HPV types not included in thevaccines,” said Dr. Philip Davies, director of the ECCA.

By Mike Woodard [email protected] It’s back to night racing for NASCAR this Saturday at 6:30 pm when Bristol welcomes the pack for the Sharpie 500. This little half mile oval packs ‘em in tight. And hey, if you want to go, Bristol TN isn’t that far. This is a bump and grind track with the fans practically sitting on top of the track. It looks more like a large football stadium, with seating for 160,000, than a race-way. This is a brake systems worse nightmare, rev up….slow down, rev up...slow down. If you can’t make the race, sit back and enjoy it on ESPN or listen to it on PRN radio. Bristol is right near the home of running moonshine where NASCAR was born. Those backwoods boys didn’t have to make so many left turns as this...they had to dust their trackers on dirt roads, run with their lights off, and know hideaways ahead to sit and watch their pursuers race by. But there’ll be no place to hide in Bristol this time, this is an en-durance contest of the fi rst order. 500 miles on a half mile track is 1,000 times around the sun...that’s a lot of accelerating, braking, turning, and fi ghting for position. This is a grueling track

and race for the drivers. Talk about a workout! Last week the Red Bull ran, nervously, fi rst to the fi nish when Brian Vickers took the hounds tooth fl ag. (Had to throw that one in there for the Bear). But, the fact is that Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr. had just about all they could take of back pack fi nishes or DNF over the past few races...and they took 2nd and 3rd respectively. It was about time! That was enough to send Jeff Gordon back into the 2nd spot in the cup standings, with Tony Stew-art still at number one.

BAMA COUNTDOWN It seems like everyone in T-town is starting to hold their breath for the season kickoff game, Sept. 5th, against VT, in Atlanta, GA. Wish this one was a home game, but we’ll have to wait for the second game of the season against Florida International for that on Sept. 12. The reports from practice have been good, and two top re-cruiting classes in a row are hav-ing an affect. Bama should be on a rebuilding year after the stellar performances of last year, but I suspect Saban has other things on his mind. Can’t wait to hear Roll Tide pouring from Bryant Denny stadium.

WELCOME TO BRISTOL

Musings On FaithWith Tom Woodard

Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:14, KJV).” The writer of Hebrews, whose name shall forever remain unknown to us, but who was a great Messenger of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, had been speaking of the blood sacrifices of the Old Testament. Then, in verse 14 of Chapter 9, he compared the once and for all sacrifice of Christ on the cross to that Old Testament sacrifice of bulls and goats, which could never fully ‘pay the price’ for our sins. But Jesus Christ did pay that price, for us, once and forever! We need to grasp the great truth that we need to turn from “dead works” to serving “the living God”. Let all that we do be pursuant to His will, discerned through meditation and prayer. Then let us be bold, as we stand strong for our be-loved America and for our Lord and King, Jesus Christ. I believe that He is calling us to a renewal and revival of our faith, and of our service to Him and to our Country. Pray on this, and let God lead. “God bless America, land that I love; stand beside her, and guide her, through the night, with the Light from above!” Liberty is fragile and perishable. We must defend it. Yours in Christ, Tom

The government gives us statistics on the participation of hunting and fishing. The numbers that come from the federal government only include those sixteen and older while each state will refine the number down to every license sold. In 2006, those over sixteen years of age who fished or hunted (or both), totaled over 42 million. There is no doubt that this group of men and women are important to our country and our economy. Those same statistics tell us this faction spent over 76 mil-lion dollars toward their outdoor activity. A recent conversation that I had with the manager of a large hunting and fishing business told me that, so far, this year had been better than last even in the bad economy that we are presently in. Hunting and fishing are also valuable in other areas of our life. They are still one of the very, very few activities that bridge the generation gap. Are you feeling some disconnect from your son or daughter? Try a hunting or fishing trip. Without ever saying a word, more healing will take place in that time, than might have been accomplished in months. If you do this, remember to go with no agenda other than to be with your child. Don’t bring up the problems that may exist between you. Don’t look for times to “make your point.” And don’t force your hunting or fishing expertise on them. Just go and let God begin to do the work that you have been unable to do. I promise you – He will. All in all, the outdoors is a special place. It was created by God with purpose. It is not by chance that the outdoors holds so many possibilities. Again, God planned it that way. Hunters and fishermen simply enjoy it more than most. The tragedy however would be if we never recognized the Divine purpose of creation; if we kept using it without letting it speak to us about God: His nature, His power, His qualities. What a waste our outdoor experiences would be if we never looked up at Him and asked, “God, what do You want me to know? What do You want me to do?” If you’ve never done that, I invite you to. Be assured, He will speak. He has many different ways of doing that, but each will be specific to your desires and needs. He will not only work out the relationships in your life that need repairing, but He will restore your greatest one – the one you have with Him.

World Watchwith Mike Woodard

[email protected] Fear is a terrible thing. It is used by folks to turn us toward or against ideas. Take the present health care argument going on. Some groups wish to scare us into believing the new plan would result in older people dying. Other groups wish to scare us into believing that if we stay with the present situation we’ll all go bankrupt from it. Frankly, the use of fear doesn’t scare me much….does it you?I guess maybe because I’ve got a few more years under my belt, and have been fooled (yes I admit it) by some of the best hucksters in the world. They all know the use of fear works on most folks. The truth is usually somewhere in between…that’s my experience anyway. Health care costs won’t go up a dime under the demos plan….well, that ain’t true. Health care costs won’t go up a dime if we just leave things alone...well, that ain’t true either! You and your doctor (if you have one) can do whatever you want to today and the government can’t decide….well, that isn’t true for Medicare is it?, and your insurance company decides today! You and your doctor can decide whatever you want to...but that doesn’t mean your insurance company is going to pay for it! The demos plan will have the government decide if you live or die...well, is that already true with Medicare of today? That’s government run “insurance”...so if that’s true...then it’s already happening. The government will run private health care insurance out of business. Let’s see...the United States Postal System delivers mail but UPS, Fed Ex, and DHL...and a few others run along side of it just fi ne….so that hasn’t happened in that business. But, see the fear? Fear that the government is going to kill grandma, fear that the government is going to run your insurance company broke, fear that the country can’t afford it...well, maybe that’s justifi ed fear. Maybe we should fear something? Naaa, I won’t help. The bottom line is, why don’t the powers that be start working on solutions rather than trying to scare the dog out of everybody? Why do they yell instead of talk? You know why? Because nobody listens anymore. Watch the pundits on TV disrespect their visitors if they disagree with them. They’ll interrupt them and talk over them….sometimes it sounds like a cackle of chickens. They don’t want to work with each other so they don’t. It’s all about these characters re-election plans! Nobody is going to destroy America folks...anything done can be undone. The founding fathers saw to it that we change administrations time and again. Let’s let go of the fear and let common sense guide us.
