What's our problem?

The Plight of the Turtles of the

Chesapeake Bay!

Our Solution! • Raise funds

• Raise awareness

• Take action

How did we get here? • Our thought process started with us brainstorming about the different

relationships between animals and humans.

1. Domestic animals

2. Farm animals

3. Wild animals

• We came up with different ideas such as: an animal Fitbit, cat wash,

automatic fish feeders, and tracking apps.

• We started talking about different ways to interact with animals.

• We started realizing that we as minors cannot be as active in helping

animals as we want to be.

• In the end, we decided to help the turtles in the Chesapeake Bay

because we are close to it and there are many foundations that already

work towards helping the animals in the bay.

Why Are Turtles Important?

• Turtles have existed on Earth

for more than 100 million years

• Fundamental links in the

ecosystem

• Keeps the ecosystem in balance

by eating large amounts of

jellyfish

• Provide large amount of

ecotourism, especially in the

Coral Triangle

There are a lot of different turtles in the Chesapeake Bay including:

• Red-bellied Cooter

• Loggerhead

• Eastern Box

• Leatherback

• Spotted

• Diamondback Terrapin

Many turtles in the Chesapeake Bay are

either endangered or threatened. There are

many reasons to why this happens:

• Habitat loss due to development and

urbanization.

• Commercial fisheries

• Being consumed by predators

• Getting entangled in debris

• Oil spills

• Poaching by Humans

• Beach driving

• Artificial Lighting

• Eating plastics bags

• Boating

STEPS TO OUR

SOLUTION!

Step 1 Raising funds

• Selling turtle cookies

• ‘Spirit nights' at local restaurants

• Dress down day at our school

Step 2 Raise awareness

• In our school we did a coloring

contest of Myrtle the turtle (a

mascot we made)

• Myrtle flyers will be handed out to

spread word of our beach clean-ups

and fundraisers

• We self-informed by having a

curator of estuarine biology from

the Calvert Marine Museum come

speak to us.

Step 3

Take Action

• We are donating the money

we raise to the Chesapeake

Bay Foundation and Calvert

Marine Museum

• We will do beach clean-up

days to reduce the amount of

trash on the beach
