    Ultimate Turtle Brownies:

AdverbsRemember that adverbs modify (give more information) verbs, adjectives, and

other adverbs. Many adverbs end in lybut not always. Another way to spot

an adverb is to see whether or not it answers the following questions: How? (In

what manner? or Under what conditions?), Where?, When?, or To what extent?

The word not, for example is an adverb that answers the question To what extent?

Sometimes it falls between helping verbs and main verbs.

Directions: First, circle the ten adverbs in the following sentences. Second, underline the verb,

verb phrase, or adjective that the adverb modifies. Write S if the adverb modifies the entire

sentence. If the sentence contains no adverbs (2), circle the sentence number.

    1. Undeniably, caramel and chocolate have an affinity.2. Add pecans to that union and the confectionery combination is so noteworthy that it has a

    name: a turtle.

    3. This appealing confection has also inspired professional brownie bakers, and turtle browniesnow appear in bakeries and coffeehouses from coast to coast.

    4. Venture to make them at home, however, and the results are less than inspiring.5. The reason is simple enough: Most homemade turtle brownie recipes call for boxed brownie

mixes and jarred caramel sauce, yielding lackluster results.

    6. I wanted something reminiscent of a candy turtle: rich, chewy, and chocolaty, with abittersweet, toothsinking caramel and an abundance of pecans.

    7. I began by carefully choosing the type and amount of chocolate.8. Brownies made solely with cocoa had a one-dimensional flavor and a chalky texture.9. Unsweetened chocolate packed a punch, but the flavor quickly fell flat.10.Bittersweet chocolate certainly gave the brownies complexity and a nuanced flavor that

lingered, but the flavor lacked assertiveness.11. I finally decided on 4 ounces of bittersweet chocolate (for complexity) and 2 ounces of

    unsweetened chocolate (for assertiveness).

12.I now had to get the texture right by adjusting the quantities of eggs, flour, and leavener.13.The light, open texture of classic cakey brownies was easily overwhelmed by the caramel.

14.On the other hand, a dense, fudgy brownie was more confectionery than those paired with thecaramel.

15.I wanted something in between.16.Two whole eggs worked nicely to give the brownies structure without unnecessary lift.17.Three-quarters cup of all-purpose flour was simply ideal for producing a moist brownie with

    chew.

18.The leavener of choice was baking powder; a half teaspoon gave the brownies the slightestamount of lift, for a distinct crumb without too much cakiness.

19.The final additions to the brownies were a generous amount of chopped pecans andfor yetanother dimension of chocolatea handful of chocolate chips.

20.(Some tasters found the chocolate chips outright superfluous, so I made them an optionalingredient.)
