In Central Ohio and around the U.S., the need for affordable housing is growing. At the same time a growing population of empty nesters has spare rooms, could benefit from help with household chores -and extra income. Enter a group of MIT students who saw an opportunity, developed a technology platform, and in 2017 launched a startup in Boston Massachusetts, called “Nesterly”. Researching public data, the students found an estimated 50 million bedrooms sit empty every night in the United States.

To tap into this hidden source of affordable housing, the students devised a digital marketplace that safely connects empty nesters with young adults seeking rents

they can afford. But Nesterly goes a step further. It provides a platform where older adults can receive help with household tasks in exchange for reduced rent. Nesterly makes the entire process of renting a space easy and flexible. Homesharing agreements can be customized, rent payments are automated. And now, Nesterly has launched in Central Ohio as a collaboration between Age Friendly Columbus and Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA). For more information call Frances Krumholtz the local homeshare coordinator with COAAA at 614-645-3646.
