systemwasthereasonwhyTurnerEngine
toreplacecompletegovernorsystem,
speedcontrol,loadsharing,synchronizationsystemandfinallythePLC’sthatarecontrolling
thedieselenginehasbeenreplacedasaturnkeyproject.
ThePLCwasinstalledindrawablecabinets.Allfieldwiringconnectionswasmadeby
connectorswhichmadeitverydifficultandtimeconsumingfortroubleshooting.
UPGRADE OF ALL ELECTRIC ACTUATORS, SPEED CONTROLS, SYNCHRONISATION, LOAD SHARING AND DIESEL PLC MODULES.

Introduction Thisvesselisequippedwithfivedieselgenerators.Eachdieselgeneratoris2.5MWandhas
a6.6kVgenerator.The6.6kVswitchgearsystemconsistsoftwosections,starboardand
portside.Bothbusbarsectionscanbecoupledbyabus-tiebreakerwhichisnormallyclosed
underDPoperation.
Inbrief,theupgradeconsistedofengineering,deliverofhardware,installationofhardware
andcommissioningofthecompletesystemdescribedbelowincludingFMEA-classification
meetingsandDPtrials.
Oneofthechallengesduringtheexecutionofthisprojectwaslimitedtimeandavailability
ofworkingspacetofinishthejobontime.Theinstallationworkwaspreventedbythefact
thatthedieselengineswereoverhauledsimultaneouswiththecontrolupgrade.
Besidesthisduringtheupgradeitappearedthattheexistingelectricaldrawingswerenot
100%correct.
ActuatorTheobsoleteBarberColmenactuators,typeDYNC16001-002-0-024havebeenreplaced
byaWoodwardProactdigitalmodelIIIactuator.
TheProactactuatorhasanintegrateddriverboardandhasastatusfailureoutputcontact.
ThisoutputcontactisfedbacktotheAtlasSCcontrolsystemforsupervisionandalarming.
Whenthehealthystatusoutputsignalfromtheactuatorisde-energisedtheATLASSCwill
activatethestartnextdiesel”relayandatthesametimetheATLASSCwillactivatethefuel
solenoidvalveinordertostopthedieselengineandpullthefuelracktozero.

overspeedtripsetpointbymeansofa
potentiometer.

pointtotesttheoverspeedtripcircuit.
Byswitchingthelocal/remotetoremote
switch,thespeed/loadoftheenginecan
beincreasedordecreaseddmanually.

Diesel PLC TheobsoleteNEBBStartomatPLC’shadbeeninstalledindrawers.Overtimetheconnectors
havebeendamagedwhichresultedinunexpectedshutdowns.
AllfunctionalityprovidedbytheStartomatPLChasbeenprogrammedintheATLASSC
control.AstheoperatorswantedtomaintainthesameoperationanHMIandaplatewith
start,stopandresetswitchesincludindlampshavebeeninstalled.
