Turman Elementary September Newsletter

Principal News

Dear Turman Elementary Families,

We have successfully completed the first month of school and are settling in to all of our routines and working hard in all subjects. I want to thank all of you who joined us for a very successful 2nd Annual Back-to-School Barbeque. We had a great time nearly doubling last year’s turnout!

I want to also take this time to let you know how proud we are of all of our scholars and teachers for showing increases on five out of six Math and Literacy tests on the CMASS: PARCC. This test measures both the growth and achievement of our scholars. Although we are not yet where we need to be, we are committed to continue this positive trend through a continued effort of hard work and dedication!

You can help us by; ensuring your students do their homework, communicate with your child’s classroom teacher, read and question your child’s progress reports, going over their weekly folders to see what your child is learning and by sending them to our Interim sessions and most importantly ensuring they are in school every day! Our goal for our attendance is 95%! Classes will be competing for prizes for the highest attendance each month.

Below is a graph outlining our school results for last year.

We are all very proud of our upward trend and promise to continue our focus this year on:

*Balanced Literacy (Writing will be our focus this year)

* Eureka Math, small groups and intervention and enrichment opportunities

* A print rich classroom (anchor charts, graphic organizers, note-taking and journals)

* High-yield Instructional Strategies

* Data- Driven teaching and learning

Please know that our year round calendar also provides an opportunity for scholars to catch-up during our Interim dates. This time is both for intervention and enrichment. We hope you will choose to send your child to these throughout the year. Our first one will be October 16th-20th and October 23rd-27th from 8:00 am-12: 00 pm.

Assistant Principal News

My name is Jana Thomas and I have the wonderful privilege of serving Turman Elementary School in the role of Assistant Principal this year. While this is my first year at Turman, it will be my 15th year working for Harrison School District #2. During this time, I have gained classroom experience with all grades K-5 in addition to spending two years as a Literacy Coach. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with an Elementary Education Licensure from the University of Northern Colorado and my Master’s degree and Principal Licensure from Argosy University. When I am not working, I enjoy traveling, camping, attending concerts, and of course spending time with my husband and two daughters, ages 15 and 19.

I am so excited to be here at Turman and am looking forward to getting to know each of our scholars and their families. It is a pleasure to be working with such a dedicated and caring staff and I can’t wait to see what successes this year will bring. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me for any reason.

Attendance Counts:

Our attendance for August was 93.05%. Let’s keeping working toward the district goals of 94% or higher!

We are looking into going to the Pumpkin Patch in October. More information to follow.

If you haven’t registered to be a VIP volunteer yet, do so now so you can come with us!

1 st Grade News

Dear first grade families,

It’s been a great six weeks of school so far! We have been practicing rituals and routines and have been getting to know your kids! They have already grown so much. Here’s what’s going on in September.

In reading this month, we will be learning how to identify the main topic and details in the text. We are also learning how to visualize the story as it is being read. Have your child read a book to you, and be sure to pause and ask them questions about the story as you go along. You can also ask them to retell the story to you in sequential order. We will continue working on breaking down unfamiliar words using our phonemic awareness and phonics skills, so be sure to ask your child to say some of those more difficult words! Don’t forget to read with your kid every night- when their reading log is complete they will get candy and a new log!

In writing, we will continue to work on informative/explanatory writing. This includes your child reading a text, and being able to recall important information, then write down those details in a logical order with some sort of introduction and conclusion. At home, you can sit down with your child and have them write about a book you read together. Be sure to give them sentence starters, remind them of finger spaces and punctuation. Try to make your child sound out the words letter by letter as he/she writes them. This will help your child immensely!

In math, we will learn how to add and subtract within twenty. Be sure to keep up with your child’s homework, it correlates directly with the weekly lessons and is due Mondays. If you have any change, erasers, pens laying around, have your child practice grouping these items to make number sentences. Reiterate words such as “take away” meaning subtract and “more” meaning add.

In science, we are learning about solids, liquids and gasses! Ask your child to tell you the difference between these items, and perhaps show them some examples around the house.

A look ahead: We will be visiting the Pumpkin Patch in October! Specific dates and time will follow shortly. If you would like to volunteer to be a chaperone, please make sure you complete the necessary steps to be a VIP at Turman Elementary. We would love to have you!

No school September 4th- Labor Day! Parent Teacher conferences September 21st

Thanks so much!

2 nd Grade News

Second grade has been busy working on many new things!

In Reading, Writing, and Comprehension, we started the year off with a new curriculum called Wonders. The students are learning new ways to access their learning through research and writing, vocabulary and reading – all in means to match their different styles of education and learning.

As we grow this year in Science, we will cover a variety of subjects. We are studying Force and Motion right now. Our children had fun experimenting with ramps and marbles, measuring how far and fast it could travel down the ramp. Collaborative working takes place not only in Reading, but also in Science and working together is something that these students do wonderfully! Our next unit of study will be weather!

Our math unit, although tricky at first, has come along and our students along with it! Number bonds, tape diagrams, and number paths are no longer giving anyone trouble! We are moving on and working on place value, units, and two-step word problems. Using the Read, Draw, Write method is a useful tool that all second graders can find handy and will continue to use throughout the school year!

Social Studies thus far, we are learning about how to be a community, rules, and how to solve conflicts, as well as respect and bullying. Finding resolutions is always important and what authority figures to go to for help is also very important. We are all a community of family and are here to help each other out.

Welcome back to a wonderful school year! As many of you know, 5th grade is departmentalizing, Ms. Kennedy is our Reading, Writing, Social Studies teacher and Ms. Hipple is our Math and Science teacher. We are preparing our 5th grade Scholars for what’s to come in middle school, from class schedules to carrying around a binder and demonstrating their responsibility. As we finish up our first Quarter of school 5th graders are working hard! In Language arts they are working hard on reading and writing narratives, they are sounding great! In Math, 5ht graders are applying their knowledge of place value to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. In Science, we are learning all about the Human Body Systems with a fun group project to come.

A wonderful opportunity has come to 5th graders at Turman this year! We have been selected to participate in SSN (Super School News)!!! We will be selecting 2- 5th graders to pose as school news anchors as well as 2-4 additional 5th graders to serve as school news reporters. We will be attending a training in Pueblo to train in the SSN program, then given 2 months to put together and prepare our news segment, and finally we will be going to Denver to tape our new broadcast! Our news broadcast will be on PBS TV!!!!!!!!!! If your 5th grader is interested in this opportunity please have him/her speak to Ms. Hipple!
