    Turkey Crazy Quilt

Crazy Quilts on an embroidery machine? Yes! The crazy quilt technique hasbeen popular with quilters for years but if you aren't a quilter you have probably nevertried this amazing technique. If you are a quilter that embroiders as well you cancombine both hobbies into this project. You create a crazy quilt by mixing differentfabrics in a patchwork style. I have seen a few different crazy quilt designs forembroidery machines but the techniques that were used required a lot of steps thatinvolved folding fabric and it took a long time to complete a block. I use a differenttechnique with these designs. You simply lay a piece of fabric down in your hoop, it istacked down with a stitch and then you trim it. You are probably asking, wouldn't thatleave a raw edge? The answer is simple, of course. When the pieces are all cut for the

block we go over all of the raw edges with a large motif stitch. The motif stitch coversthe edge and eliminates the need for any folding. You will love this technique. The bestpart about these crazy quilts is that when they are complete you have a scene with alarge icon in the center instead of just a quilt.

The following pages contain an extensive guide that will demonstrate how tochoose your fabrics, create a block and finish the quilt. I hope you enjoy the designsand look for new crazy quilt projects from Anita Goodesign soon!

This is the basic layout for the wall hanging. The base fabric for each square iswhite, you will not see any of the base fabric when the project is completed. The onlyother fabrics you will need to choose are for the border frame.

DO NOT FORGET TO ADD SEAM ALLOWANCES!

Here are the fabrics used to make the wall hanging. We chose 6 different light tanfabrics, 6 different browns, 3 different reds and 1 dark brown or black. You will need abou3/4 of a yard each for the tans, yard each for the browns and a fat quarter each for thereds. Medium and small print fabrics work well. We used Civil War reproduction prints fo

    our fabrics.

    Anita GoodesignNotes on Sizes

Each of the block designs come in 2 sizes . The sample we embroidered used the large size. Bothsizes look wonderful. Since the stitch counts don't vary that greatly between sizes, your choice of sizemay simply depend on the capability of your machine.

Designs with the letter Bat the endare the small designs for a hoop that canembroider at least 5 x 5

Designs with the letter Aat the endare the large designs. You will need ahoop capable of embroidering 6x6

    Anita GoodesignOrganizing your fabrics

All of the blocks in this collection are created using applique. Keeping your fabric organized is key tocompleting them quickly. When we are working on the crazy quilt projects we start out by choosing therequired fabrics and laying them out on a worktable with note cards that signify the number or letter ofthat particular fabric (see fabric sheet for more info) That way when the design sheet calls for fabric Awe simply reach for that pile and our fabric is all set. If you follow this technique of organizing yourfabrics you will complete the blocks very quickly.

    This tutorial originallyappeared in the

    Pumpkin Crazy Quiltcollection. The

techniques used in thesunflower are exactly

    the same.

Anita GoodesignHow the block instruction pages work.

ach of the 25 blocks for this project are created in a similar fashion as what is shown below. You will seecan of the finished block along with the corresponding fabric letters on top of it. The letters and numberemonstrate where each piece of fabric goes. This picture will show you where each piece of fabric needse placed. Follow the typed instructions carefully. You will notice that they will tell you to stitch a step andhen place fabric after it. This is very important. Another tip is to always match your tacking stitch thread cos closely as possible to your fabric color.

Anita GoodesignCreating each crazy quilt block is simple, you will simply place your fabric, tack it down and trim. Aslong as your fabrics are organized and you refer to each design sheet for the steps you will breezethrough the designs. The individual blocks are created as follows:

The first step in the design is to hoop your basefabric with a piece of tear-away stabilizer. You canuse a white cotton as your base fabric. Stitch out

step one of the block, this is your squaring stitch. All of the appliques will fit inside this squaringstitch.

Tip!No matter which placement technique you usemake sure the grain of the fabric is going up anddown when you place it. This will insure that thepatterns line up throughout the blocks.

Now you will place your first layer of fabric. Thereare two different ways to do this. I suggest startin

the first way and as you get more familiar with thtechnique move on to the second way.

The Safe WayPlace a piece of fabric down so that it completelycovers the square with about an additional inchextending all the way around.

The Fabric Saving WayPlace a smaller piece of fabric down so it is in tharea of the square for that particular part of the

design. How do you know where to place it? Thedesign sheets will designate each applique witheither a letter or number and show you where inthe box that section is. Again, be sure to leave atleast an inch extending outside the box.

When your fabric is in position stitch the next steof the design. This will tack your first piece offabric in place.

    Anita Goodesign

Now its time to trim the first piece of fabric. Cutright along the tacking line as close as you canexcept for the outside edge. If there is a portion othe fabric that extends past the squaring stitchyou will need to leave a 1 tab. This tab willactually be your seam allowance.

The picture at the left demonstrates how your tabshould look.

You will repeat this process for every applique inthe design. Follow the design sheets for the exaplacement instructions.

Tip!Match your tacking thread steps to theapplique fabric color. This way if threadshows through the seams you will notnotice it.

The photo at the left shows the block almostcomplete. If you keep your fabric organized youwill see how quickly you will be able to movethrough these designs.

This is the completed block along with the motistitches. When the block is done remove it fromthe hoop and set it aside. We will trim the blockin the following steps.

    12/40

Anita GoodesignNow we will demonstrate how to assemble all of the pieces to create the quilt. Obviously the first step isto embroider all 25 pieces. Once they are done follow these steps.

This picture shows a completed block ready totrim.

Using your quilters ruler trim the block so thatthere is a seam allowance around the wholeblock. Line the ruler up along the outer stitches.

This is how the block should look once it istrimmed. Notice how all of the applique fabrics areeven. If you used enough fabric for your tabs thisis how it should look.

This tutorial originally appeared in the Pumpkin Crazy Quilt collection. The techniques used in the sunflower are exactly the same.

  • 8/10/2019 Turkey Crazy Quilt Tutorials and Colors

    13/40

    Anita Goodesign

Now its time to join our blocks together. This is a25 block scene so we are going to make fivestrips of five blocks going left to right first and then

join the five strips together to create the finishedproject. Lay one block flat and take the block nextto it and lay it face down on top of it. Line up the

outside stitch lines so that they are right on top ofeach other. Pin them together.

Use a straight stitch on your sewing machine tosew the blocks together. Stitch just to the inside o

the lines. That way when you open the blocks yowill not see the stitches.

You will need to press the seam every time yousew a pair of blocks together. This will insure ththe blocks will be straight.

This tutorial originally appeared in the Pumpkin Crazy Quilt collection. The techniques used in the sunflower are exactly the same.

  • 8/10/2019 Turkey Crazy Quilt Tutorials and Colors

    14/40

    Anita Goodesign

Continue the same process for the next 3 blocks in the strip. The photo above demonstrates howthe strip of five will look when complete. finish the next four strips for a total of five strips of five.

Now we will join the strips together.

Lay them on top of each other in much thesame manner as the individual blocks.

This tutorial originally appeared in the Pumpkin Crazy Quilt collection. The techniques used in the sunflower are exactly the same.

  • 8/10/2019 Turkey Crazy Quilt Tutorials and Colors

    15/40

Anita GoodesignSince this is a longer strip you will need to usemore pins. Sew them together with a straightstitch in the same manner as the individualblocks.

This picture shows twostrips sewn together.

This picture shows all fivof the strips sewn togethNow all thats left is to ada border and quilt the

    project!

Tip!This project is essentially one of our tile scene designs without the ribbon added downthe seams. If you want to add ribbon down the seams you still can. The ribbon caneasily cover a mistake or an uneven seam. There is a separate tile scene tutorial in thetutorials folder of the CD-Rom that demonstrate these techniques.
